- The Aperture Science Sentry Turrets are a staple of the company and the whole Portal series. From their iconic laser beams, to their dangerous but calming demeanor, their song, and even the Prima Donna Turret, these machines truly left their mark and influence in the world.
Were the Turrets sentient? How dangerous were they, and what impact did they have on Aperture? In this video, I explore the lore and story behind Aperture Science's Sentry Turrets in Portal.
How do you feel about the Portal with RTX update coming this November?

How do you feel about the "Portal with RTX" update coming in November?
wait what?
i think it seems pretty cool
Seems like valve doing the bare minimum to keep the dickri- I mean fans happy so they don’t realize valve is actually an F tier company now
@@gruzi. This. Valve doesn't care to maintain their titles or actually produce them. The Steam store was the death of Valve when they realized they could sit around and make money without making/maintaining games.
I just watched a video by Ossy Flawol and he talks about a lot of the negative things about it. Some of the helpful lighting features have disappeared and there is no longer an animation when you shoot a portal, amongst other things I don't like. This isn't actually a remaster but just a tech demo for the new Nvidia RTX Remix software that people can use to add RTX to older games. I will still try it out tho lol

Ah, the sentry turret. 65% more bullet per bullet.
Classic Cave
The whole bullet, as God intended to be shot
it’s quite literally the reason that chell can survive being shot
and we use rhe whole bullet! thats 65% bullet per bullet!
scares the hell outta them
I love the turrets just :
"I don't blame you."
"I don't hate you."
"No hard feelings."
Actually make me feel bad...
Same, I always try to avoid hurting them. They are my favourites out of all of the aperture robots
@@aidanjamespiggott3377 same
Same.
i love them but also hate them
They have the sentience to feel guilt for hurting you but there is programming seemingly just overriding that. Aperture and everything they did is just perfectly morbid, hilarious, and awesome. I hope the movie doesn't suck (if it ever gets made) and that Half-Life 3 still acts like a Portal 3 + Half-Life 3 like the original iteration (pre-hl:alyx). I think they realize that involving aperture is a must, even if it isn't the Borealis.
The turrets are unnecessearily adorable, even while filling you with holes
So adorable
yes
literally and figuratively
thats sus but they are adorable and cute
What I find funny is that if Glados is aware of the combine invasion they could crush them easily. Aperture has the construction capabilities of an infinite multiverse. An entire facility that can be moved and shaped at will into anything. Aperture vs The Combine would be insane
i never even thought about it like that. my god.
Yeah, I thought that too. They would have beaten the shit out of the Combine. GLaDOS would have tactically overpowered them with ease.
That’s probably why the Combine is so concerned about the Borealis. From all the Multiverse travel they probably encountered the Combine or some other equally powerful foe.
That would be amazing just imagine this a combine Soldier being tested
She is though, she prefers to stay hidden from them
Imagine if we get to see the turrets used against the combine like on a mission to defend the borealis or maybe if Gordon goes to aperture
I do think its possible in someway... The Borealis gotta have some sort of protection, and I bet it was complete before it got teleported out of Aperture. So maybe turrets are doing all the guarding on the ship itself? Definitely not the usual turrets Gordon saw at Aperture and eventually what was used by the Combine against him... I think it would be really cool if they would add Aperture more into the lore of upcoming Half Life games.
they put them in the new half life 2 mod entropy zero thats pretty popular right now
this is a thing in entropy zero 2 the rebels even designed the turrets to have lambdas on them it’s really cool
Still so many possibilities for additional games in the series. We just have to hope that Valve will continue
@@royliber3824 well I haven't played parts one and two yet but I have watched these amazing lore stories so I'm thinking that with the addition of the borealis that we will more than likely see more aperture science innovations in the upcoming games. The creation of half Life Alyx makes me believe that there actually may be a 3rd half life or atleast an episode 3 sometime in the near future.
i couldn’t believe when the turret said “it’s shootin time” and shot the crap out of Chell. Portal is one of the duologies ever created.
That's my favourite moment haha

I prefer to watch jethild. He is (as far as I've seen) the most successful CZcamsr that's covering command and conquer lore. But for portal lore, come to you skyrionn.
I like to think they made the turret utterly indestructible but forgot that tipping it over was a option
Classic Aperture fashion
Seems like something Aperture would do. They make this hyper advanced futuristic tech but it has one major downside. Like a gun that can create wormholes between places, but it can only do so if the walls have moon rocks on them.
“The turrets were given a copy off the rules of robotics(to share)”
Is it wrong that I want to hug one? I know that will probably kill me, but they're just so adorable!
well it won't kill you if it won't see you, so you could try but it could still end badly

It's what I do Cody. Everything has a story and I will tell it haha.

@@SkyrionnI REALLY love your Lore videos. Your presentation is so good that I often find myself thinking on how much I’d probably enjoy it if you did videos on my favorite games ( Xenoblade, as an example), despite the fact I don’t play shooters anymore, and can’t guarantee we share identical tastes in video games.
Gotta max out that video time

7:00 the work put into this at that time is actually brilliant.
Chell is not caroline's daughter. Chell is the daughter of a male scientist at aperture. I suppose it's possible that both her parents worked there, but her potato experiment from bring your daughter to work day stated she added something from "daddy's work". If her mother pretty much ran the company it would be mommy's work, or mommy and daddys work...calling her daughter in the song is most likely a metaphor as glados and the turrets were essentially protecting her from the outside world like a child (even if they aren't really aware of what has happened on the surface, glados as concluded that it must be pretty terrible)
Chell could be Cave and Caroline's daughter. That would then allow the "daddies work" quote to work. Plus, you think Cave would let his daughter lose a science fair? Hell no!
@@mrmxypltk the big boss's daughter is just so cliche and played out...I give valve the benefit of the doubt on this one. I think they can do better than that.
@@lostnumbr they can't count to 3. I'd say it's completely plausible.
Its possible that she was Cave's and Caroline's daughter, then given up for adoption and subsequently adopted by an aperture science employee
@GsmackJoeypads I mean the game isnt new the cliche was less played out in 2007
So the turrets based on Aperture Desk Job were made by that one guy (forgot his name but he's the blueish core in Desk Job) but then improved on by the rest of Aperture.
Probably the cutest killing machines in gaming. "Are you still there?"
I heard that in their voices. I always felt so bad for knocking them down
@@Skyrionn Have you seen Harry101UK's channel, if you like the turrets you'll probably love this
I'm surprised none of the test subjects realized that the turrets tend to aim center mass. Thus, when 'armed' with a cube, they could use it as a shield against the hail of fire that was very predictably aimed at them, and even gently ram the cube into the turret to tip it over.
Then again, before I played portal, I played Call of Duty, so instead of trying to drop a cube on top of a turret, I instead used it like a riot shield. ;p
turret at your right: *GOTCHA!*
@@imdliamdragonlucha6827 Obviously that strategy wouldn't work for 2 or more turrets, especially facing opposing directions.
Just like the CoD shield. Borderline useless against smart players, but basically unstoppable vs AI turrets, who can neither move to flank you, nor do things like aim for the exposed toes.
@@nerdicusdorkum2923 still, i just wanted to make a meme
I would honestly love to see content about the combine struggling to capture aperture. The whole facility is a sealed off vault of super advanced tech that they have most likely never encountered before. I woner how they'd react to all the weird quirks of the place while trying to take control
Im glad you’re still making videos of portal.
The videos are so dam good, iv probably rewatched your portal videos like over a hundred times.
That means a lot. Thanks for the continued support :D
Hey, good video. Very informative, but it seems like you forgot to mention the Turret King. He can be seen in the same scene as the primadonna turret, just faintly in the background, wearing a giant crown.
animal king*
I did mention him when I talked about the other universes - I did have a little part about him in that script but didn't want to draw it out too much :D
4:34 Behind the fancy wording, the turrets are actually less lethal than standard firearms. They are spring-fired, with much slower projectiles that carry less kinetic energy to their target. Chell can take a good couple seconds of constant fire from them and survive handily, and that's with basically no protection.
Wonderful! Made me think of the possibilities if a portal 3 was made with an escaped Chell would be like... remnants of warring earth against a woman with a Portal gun... how amazing of a future we'll likely never see. Great job putting together an informative video that restarted my love for an awesome franchise
Thanks for watching! It's a shame we never got an additional game but there's always hope!
@@Skyrionn I've been thinking about the voice drops between each personality core in portal 1 being removed from GLaDOS. Do they have energy sustainers inside as an alternative? It explains how they link to GLaDOS untill incinerated , GLaDOS is the main power source but not the only one. The voice drop is because power is also sent to GLaDOS maybe and she lowers the voice to sustain herself and repurpose the energy where needed most. When all the cores were removed the energy was no more and she couldn't keep her reactor stable which made such a powerful chemical reaction it made an emergency portal which if known about could of became bombs. The turrets are perfect as they still link without directly linking to GLaDOS.
0:23 ah, yes, the most important breakthrough in science, companion cubes.
Cave Johnson:
So we _could_ use standard projectiles that are more efficient, have better aerodynamics, reach higher speeds and have casings that can be reloaded or we _could_ just shoot the entire casing.
Genius!
classic Cave!
I really appreciate your hard work on HL videos.Look I,m waiting from a long time for a such type of Portal or HL2 video, but we never mentioned the most common thing between all most popular Valve games. The person responsible for game art and concept during HL and Portal is HIM -Viktor Antonov.I,ve been personally met him in Bulgaria and it's a long story when he tell me that the most things added in the game are the socialistic period in Bulgaria from his childhood. You can make a special video for that. Just search about Viktor Antonov and places in HL2 taken from Sofia(Bulgaria's capital). Also 2 monuments are taken from this city for recreation after that in HL:Alix.
I'll absolutely look into it! That must have been so cool meeting him! Thanks for the continued support too!

Thanks for all the Portal lore man, it really do be scratching that itch in my brain
The Portal series has amazing lore and I'm so glad that I can just tell their stories
Recently I replayed Portal 1, and decided to put as many as I could into "timeout" just like you did.
The challenge version of Chamber 16 was a great challenge; instead of knocking them over, it forced me to try new ways to get around or block them. Super satisfying to complete.
A good in depth stuff that even I found out some new lore surrounding the turrets love the vids man.
Brilliant. I have done my job well then haha
Hard to put into words how much I enjoyed this video!
Amazing explaination, soothing to hear and understand.
Thank you for the marvelous content. It's so often a pleasant companion in my day.
In both Portal 1 & 2, there are several references to the Bring Your Daughter to Work Day, and we even get to see Chell's name on the gigantic potato plant Science Project. There's no real way of telling how much time had passed between the Caroline's transfer into GlaDos and the Bring Your Daughter to Work Day event, but if wasn't more than a few years then it could still be possible for Chell to have been Caroline's daughter. On the day of the event, Chell could have been put into one of the stasis pods (thus saving her from the neurotoxin), which Rattman discovered sometime later. In Portal 1, it's possible that GlaDos didn't recognize Chell as her daughter due to the neuron-dampening spheres that were still attached to her. In Portal 2, Chell had been in suspended "relaxation" (and suspended aging) for possible centuries, and the rebooted GlaDos was simply unaware of Caroline's memory files that were stored in her system...until they were activated upon hearing Caroline's recorded voice and viewing Caroline in the portrait with Cave Johnson. As for Chell herself, she exhibits many similar genetic traits as Caroline (and some of Cave Johnson). Chell could be a genetically modified clone of Caroline mixed with some of the preserved DNA of the late Cave Johnson, but...we'll never truly know (for now). GlaDos does show some "motherly instincts" during one of the cut-scenes after fully completing the Co-Op portion of Portal 2, so... the possibility IS there.
Love your videos! Thank you for keep making them :)
Thanks Caspar! I have so many more topics to go and I appreciate the continued support!
i love your videos so much, im so happy to see valves community still thriving!

according to developer commentary, these turrets are actually sent to an unboxing machine, and then uses the as the turrets inside the facility
The combine vs GLaDOS is something I never knew I needed to see
Since the defective turrets in Portal 2 will sometimes say "Ahh not again!" before exploding, I like to think that turret AI has a sort of "cloud save" feature (similar to the one GLaDOS says she has) and their AI just gets put back into a new body in the turret factory assembly line whenever they're destroyed. This would also explain why the grinder for when a turret is marked as defective is called "redemption". This makes me feel less guilty about having to destroy the little guys.
All three orange box games have some form of sentry and i love it
Man I love your videos because I got more information to talk with my friends that like portal and half life too.
I'm glad I can help you and your employers
That was a really good video, I agree, they're definitely an iconic part of portal
That's very kind! Thank you :D They truly are.

in the room where you get out of a drain and there are lots of turrets scattered around in "nests" i managed to turn every single one around without hurting them and proceeded to listen to radio for several minutes, great experience
Epic vid. Missed out on the sideways built turret and the rocket turret though.
I wonder, are the sideways turrets strictly design flaws, or are they potential improvements
i like how alot of people are saying "i feel bad for them after killing them" well for me it's the opposite
i remember being a kid playing "portal: still alive" on my family's xbox 360, i was playing chamber 16, ran through it killing all of them, and afterwards emancipating all of them as my dad watched from over my shoulder (the xbox was in the living room) and commenting on how cruel it was, i was sadistic
love the vids and their quality props : )
Thank you :D Thats very kind!
I'll reluctantly confess - this is the first video I actually watched since your opposing force one. I already mentioned it on that one, but it was just fatiguing, although I myself am partially to blame for that, seeing how I reserved all of my free time until I was done with it, not stopping for anything else.
Great video as per usual. Nothing to really add or remove, although I refuse to believe that the turrets that happen to have a completely different and cases are just manufacturing defects, and there might be more going on.
I also love the idea of taking the ending scene of Portal 2 literally and Chell being confused because she doesn't speak Italian.
BTW, here's 3kliksphilip talking about how to make props not pop in when you do scenes like the one at 19:50 : czcams.com/video/3g80m8INEYs/video.html I recommend just always using it as a precaution. Maybe even put it in your config.cfg files.
If aperture was a main competitor Mesa, then I’m quite surprised we never saw combine having to deal with some of their bullshit
Turrets being built with an empathy processor chip and empathy represser chip makes me wheeze thinking they genuinely feel bad for gunning you down
Every time you make video on half-life or portal l learn something New even when l have played the to death and l like it you make them feel fresh and new.

Breh, you drop "... and so..." a good dozen times in nearly every video of yours that I've subjected myself to.
"And so" - was used 5 times in this video after checking the script. It was also used only 2 times in the Civil Protection video before it. Thanks for subjecting yourself to them anyway!
@@Skyrionn lol
I love your content bro
Since valve doesn't care about their own games' cannon, neither do I.
My personal story is that Chell IS the daughter of the Big CJ and Caroline, and was adopted by a scientist at ApLabs, and when Carol-DoS saw her at Bring Your Daughter to Work Day (not cat, I choose to ignore that like valve ignores the number 3) that was when she decided to act, whether she found out about Chell being adopted beforehand and planned it out, or she didn't know and the memories came to her when she saw Chell on the cameras, end result is the same.
Neurotoxin the adults save the children, then glados takes over again and begins testing on everyone, but Chell is always protected by the usually dormant Caroline, and Caroline's last act before being deleted was to force glados to release her, and put a hidden subroutine into the opera turrets to give her a sendoff as she left.
Is that rational and logical? Nah. Does it make sense even within the two games own lore? Meh. Close enough for me. Do I still choose to believe it? Heck yeah
Good video skyrionn.
Thanks Hyperion
I love the turrets haha, you also get one as a companion in the mod Entropy Zero 2 :)
another good episode
Thanks A random guy. There are so many more to come too!
What about the toilet turret shown on the last portal based game?
If I'm gonna be honest, I also pick them up and point them at a wall. I have really gone deep into portal lore lately and since I found out in this video that they are truly sentient and have real feelings, I feel bad to knock them over for to be shut down. In my opinion I always thought that them saying something like "shutting down..." was like them accepting that they are about to die. I've never knocked one over ever since watching this video right after it's release.
Watching this waiting for Bonelab to install that its making it hard to focus on the video 🤣. Good video as always man.

are you sure they had synthesizers for music? I always thought it was their motors making the music since they move there arms in and out as they do it.
If we credit the ending, we see chell entering a field of wheat with no combine in sight. If this is 50k years in the future, maybe this proves humanity fought off the combine?
well, that's pretty much the plot of Alyx - beating the combine
I always did my best to face turrets into the corners. Though sometimes I accidentally knocked them over
Cute sentient centry with adorable voice and voice lines that's gonna shoot you at the spot is Valve dark humor in nutshell.
The turrets are easily my favorite characters in the game, they're just so cute!
20:13 Why does everyone say that Aperture Desk Job is in a different universe? The steam page literally says that it takes place in the same universe as the main story.
The Turret canonically originated from a malfunctioning Toilet-Bidet hybrid, nothing multiverse.
It's not even too far fetched as far as Aperture's "RnD" goes. There's nothing more Aperture than accidentally pouring bullets into a toilet and calling it an invention.
Erik Wolfpaw has stated that Desk Job is not canon so it exists outside of the universe we played in. I wanted it to be in the video so that why I put it at the end ☺
@@Skyrionn He made a somewhat vague statement which basically said "The spinoffs in general aren't canon until they are". I also wanna mention that the half life writers have a history of making contradictory statements. Then, there's still the statement from the Steampage which clearly says "yep, same universe". If this was a multiverse thing, this wouldn't have been mentioned.
We have two contradicting statements here and when I have to choose whether to believe a private E-Mail saying "Don't think so RN not but maybe" or the official market page saying "Yes", I'll choose to believe the latter.
Tho in the end, we'll find out what's true once (or if) a new game drops. Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong, but until there's an official lore cleanup, I will stick to what I interpret from the information we get.
Technically speaking, you could hug the turret so tight, it -cant- won't shoot you
Man, I thought I was the only one who faced the turrets at the wall when they were younger.
Combine: “oh cool, free stuff, oh wow! A portal gun! We needed that!”
*Glados:*
Glados got owned by an overweight orphan doubt the combine would struggle with turrets
I still firmyl believe that objectively speaking, Aperture had the better scientists and would in theory (if given the same budget and time as Black Mesa had) quickly surpass Black Mesa as the de facto science company. I mean think about it, even when at the edge of bankruptcy, Aperture was able to invent the portal gun, mobility gels, etc. Black Mesa's greatest technology was teleportation, and that only was made in the late 90s, about a decade after Aperture's famous inventions.
True.
11:54 this absolutely had to lead to countless cases of “my son was murdered by our home defence system after sneaking back from getting laid or something”
13:33 like that absolutely killed somebody I’m their house after they just stubbed their toe and it fell. BOOM, human Swiss cheese
Since you said that the combine could break in I’m just thinking like a random shot gunner walking in and then getting shot to hell by like 10 turrets+combine turret on aperture turret combat
Oh awesome! Cheers
Thanks Luis
I feel like you probably could design a bullet to fire the casing out of the barrel with the bullet to help stabilize it and not use a conventional primer, similar to, but distinct from, caseless ammunition.
The fact that Aperture had portal technology for over FIFTY YEARS before anyone else even got close, and just kept it on the back burner for all that time instead of becoming ungodly rich off it really shows how braindead Cave Johnson was.
I wish you talked about the animal King more :(
Idea:
Halflife:Spearhead
You play as a combine human unit of some kind. Your team and yourself manage to get into Aperture, and get separated. The game is you trying to link back up.
The incinerator seems like a big waste of materials. Imagine if you are making a car and a seat belt isn't working. Instead of replacing the broken part or using the good parts on making a new car they just melted all of it down
Well to be honest, when you run a self sustaining facility that no one knows exists, material waste is the least of your probkems
"Why don't you go far away?
Far away from science?
Dear, oh my dear baby girl?"
i never understood why, despite making the portal gun, aperture didnt realize that firing bullets using springs are in no way deadly.
The Sentry Turrets are the most haunting robots by Aperture Science.
I also did that with those turrets only in portal 2
The most likely way that Android Hell is real is via the torment that GLaDOS planned to give Wheatley after regaining control of her body.
Don't take this the wrong way but when you said "complex" instead of "facility" at 9:57 I was in complete shock and disbelief.
I feel comforted that im not the only one who spares those cute sentries.
"Could you come over... here?"
I would have loved to see a old model of the turret
I used to pile all the turrets at the end of the chamber and throw them into the grill lmao
AYE AY AYA AY AYAA aha, loved that sound.
Personal HC that the Turrets encountered in Half Life 2 are the Aperture ones, but were stripped of their AI personality and core, and if all the Turrets have a hive mind, like the Vortiguants, they probably fear the Combine as much as every creature under the Combine’s control. Being a mindless slave for such powerful forces would keep them in line given GLaDOS’s awareness and possible cooperation with the Combine.
She could threaten them with being sold to the Combine and they’d obey.
And the possible conversion into the Combine Turrets would be their equivalent of Humans being made into Stalkers, and damn right it’d be agonizing
