- In this video I asked Russians to tell me the reason why they often stare at Black people and also sometimes asks for pictures.
Every black person in Russian has at some point been approached by strangers for pictures or stare at for a long time and in this video we will have a better understanding why Russians do this.

Imagine if you're a provincial Russian happen to be in Moscow and saw an African for the first time in your life. Of course you will stare out of curiosity. Same as when a white person goes to a remote African or Asian village. It's all about curiosity not racism.

ofc people are dumb and see only "the message" that is dumped out of the West such as "racism"... you ppl see it everywhere. So what a fck?! I would also stare and don't give a shit about what others think. And yes, I also took a picture of a black guy on a beach. And yes, he WAS an attraction for me. And yes, I eat meat, and yes, I feel bad seeing two gays kissing each other.
I think this is not the only question. For Russia, seeing black people is, in principle, not a common thing. Yes, you're right, this is not about racism, but about curiosity. I will never say anything bad about a neighbor just because he is black. But the fact is that we call black people the N-word, which is prohibited in the West. But when we say that, we don’t even have any racist overtones in our thoughts, it’s just that in Russia they are used to calling everything by their proper names. For us, this word is nothing more than the name of a race. But when we meet black people, we try not to use this word so as not to offend the person.
And yes, when I see a black guy or girl, I always look around, because I’m interested, but I don’t think badly about this person, simply because I don’t see such people every day. In the USA, meeting a black person is common, in Russia it’s like meeting a white person in an African village.
@@daniiltkachenko13 You don't have to change vocabulary just because it's offensive in the west. That's on them, not you. Besides I think the word "black" in Russian language refers to the people from the Caucasus, where as the "n word" simply refers to the race.
Моя мама однажды привезла в Москву свою сестру - деревенскую женщину из Кемеровской области... И когда та увидела в метро темнокожего парня, она не могла сдержать восторга, тыкала мою маму в бок, кивала на парня и всё повторяла "смотри! смотри!" и глупо хихикала :) Для неё это, похоже, было как встретить кого-то из телека :))
Помню, знакомая рассказывала смешную историю, как зимой на остановке лет 10 назад застала прекрасную сцену в Брянске.
Стоит чернокожий парень в пальто и шапке ушанке, а рядом кучка пацанов-подростков. Парни на него зыркают, пальцем тычат, смеются, всячески глупо шутят-оскорбляют.
Негр не выдерживает, подходит к ним, нависает (а он под 2 метра был), и на чистом русском без акцента выдаёт что-то вроде "Пацаны, а вы не охренели? Вам чего надо? По шее?"
Те прифигели, начали мямлить, извиняться, кто-то сказал "Простите, мы думали, что вы не местный..."
А чернокожий товарищ им выдаёт "А я и есть неместный! Я из Челябинска!" 😂

I think so too. I think any racism you see from Russians they most likely picked up from white westerners. Black people have no history with Russians for them to want to dislike us!

Absolutely the same thing happens when Russians go to Africa or Asia, especially in monoethnic places: people staring, asking to make photos, touching hair and skin... I think it's normal for human beings
Sure, I remember being a kid in Africa maybe about 4-5 years old the first time i saw a white person, it was definitely unusual but you get over it.
It kinda reminds me when me and my parents visited Turkey when I was 5. I has super white skin and white tight curls back then, and local people often stopped by to touch my hair out of curiosity.
I have been in a small city in Kenya, there it is even a matter of safety to be white, cuz there you are seen not only as something unusual but as a pocket of money
Correct! My Australia white wife constantly gets approached by people snd especially children whenever we visit Nigeria.
Russia isn't monoethnic, but all its peoples belong only to European and Asian race or this two mixed

Бабушка облегчённо:"Так ты русский! ". Вежливость в момент слетела. И делее повелительно:"Сумку с прохода убери!".
UPD: Почитал комментарии и хочу кое-что пояснить. Думая, что парень иностранец, бабушка говорила с ним как с гостем. К гостям у нас отношение бережное, почтительное.
Когда же парень оказался по её мнению русским, она обратилась к нему как к своему.
Фраза "Вежливость в момент слетела" не означет, что она стала хамить. Просто на правах старшего сделала строгое замечание. Как своему, без церемоний.
Сумка действительно стояла не у места.
Наши бабули кому угодно дадут прокашляться :)))

Реакция на черного человека в России точно такая же как реакция на белого человека в Африке или Азии. Моя дочь работала в Индии пол года и не могла спокойно пойти в магазин, на рынок или погулять, ей даже поесть в кафе спокойно не давали, все глазели и выстраивались в очередь за фотографиями. Я живу в небольшом северном городе. К нам как-то в офис зашел чернокожий клиент. Мы как могли старались сдерживаться и "следить за нашими лицами", что бы он не чувствовал дискомфорта. Но как только он ушел - все как один "расплылись" в улыбках и стали восхищаться какой он необычный, какой красивый оттенок кожи, какой он умница - как старался говорить по русски (а он был черный-черный, чернее наверное не бывает). В менталитете русского человека есть такая черта как любопытство, мы все любопытные, нам всегда интересно что-то новое, необычное. А еще у русских сильно развито чувство сострадания и взаимопомощи, мы понимаем, что иностранец в нашей стране уязвим из-за плохого знания языка и общественных правил, от этого подсознательно возникает желание подойти и поговорить, убедится, что все в порядке.

For the most part, we can start to get nervous and worried because we think that the difference in cultures is great and we can somehow offend a black person, so it may seem that we are cold and detached, but this is not the case. And, by the way, the word "Negr" is not an offensive or swear word in Russia, it's just the name of a certain type of appearance (dark skin, wavy, thin, black and curly hair, wide nose, plump lips, etc.), like "Caucasian" = "white" (people with fair skin, straight and thicker hair, light eyes, thin lips, etc.)
it's funny that the word "Caucasian" ("европеоид"="europeoid") in Russian is consonant with the word "Caucasians" ("кавказцы", people living in the Caucasus, part of which is located in Russia)

Был в 2019 году в Непале, в местечке Люмбини, по моему на границе с Индией - целый день гулял там один по храмовым комплексам и чувствовал себя, как та обезьянка в Сочи, с которой хотят все сфотографироваться, кто-то культурно интересовался и просил разрешения, а некоторые просто вынимали телефон, подходили и фоткались.))

When I lived in St. Petersburg It was very rare that I was stared at. people didn't care. But during the winter season when it snows, we are more noticeable; but stare at no I didn't experience any of that the 6 years I lived there.
In smaller cities yeah that would be expected but in St. Petersburg, and Moscow, and other big cities it's not an issue. I miss Russia very much I consider Russia to be my 2nd home I hope to return again.

As an African from Zimbabwe ..Russia played a huge role in our liberation struggle against colonialist .. We do not view Russians the same way as colonising Europeans at all.. We are Doing as well as can be expected with former colonist still intefering and slapping us with 23 years of illegal sanctions because we took back 87% of our farmland and economy that was in the hands of 4500 white Farmers n others.. the kith n keen of the British, the whole western world was like a Wolf pack ganging up against little Zimbabwe because they wanted us to buy back our stolen land from the colonist.. The same as slave masters getting compensated for losing their slaves not the enslaved getting reparations .. right up to the late 70s..colonialist were still flooding in displacing us and taking our land by force.. The same west was trying to buy lithum from Zim via the backdoor trying to break their own Illegal sanctions..I wonder if thats the reason they have lifted some of the sanctions for our natural resources?
Yes things are tough and a struggle, we could probably do better with younger less corrupt leaders just like America could do without Biden.. We need leaders that care about their country n people..our old one foot in the grave fossils.. unfortunately looked up so much to their colonial masters and wanted to be monsters and rule just like them..
On the bright side.. Some of our black farmers back on their land now are doing quite well farming of course it will take time..farming and Rural land is free for citizens now.. With the illegal sanctions western banks companies took flight to punish us.. So all those farming, their equipment, housing, infrastructure, vehicles, livestock and more.. They actually own everything outright, zero mortgage or hire purchase they are all paid off assets. On a slow but sure pay as you go system..
Home ownership in Zimbabwe? .. I don"t know one Zimbabwean, family, friends, young or old that have a mortgage car higher purchase .. We own our homes outright, cars, funiture, clothes etc.. Zero debt! .. Thanks to the West and their illegal weapon of choice sanctions! Sometimes they do backfire like in the Russian case.. Today Zimbabweans are debt free... Maybe a few might have mortgages now.. but the overwhelming majority own their homes 100% on a pays as you go system.. Or build on pay as you go... Business premises you name it.. those are assets bought Paid off in full! .. I wonder how many people in the west can say the same? .. Most have lost and will lose their homes with the greedflation and living crisis going on.. or rather the banks will take back their homes on loan to those that can't make payments. .. Who knows the Zimbabwe situation might just make a good case study and a model for many to follow in the future ..
That is where we are in Zimbabwe..93% plus unemployment some scattered all over the world.. Zimbabweans we are hustlers and don't sit around feeling sorry for ourselves.. When the going gets though the tough get going.. That is us in a nutshell!!..

When i see a foreigner (not only specifically african or asian) somewhere in my city, i always think to myself "this person left his country thousands miles away, sometimes he faces problems and difficulties, but still he wants to stay here, study and have family. from that side this person can be counted as russian more, than many of russians "
i’m Russian and the very first time i met black people here was in the 1980s - I was a peanut and met a completely black girl in the Moscow hospital, as 2 patients we were playing together and when i got back home i named my black doll after her. (yes even then we had black dolls in Russia, as you remember we had Olympic Games in 1980 and the overall atmosphere of international friendship was in the air). Also living in Moscow since birth, we had a family of 4 people as neighbors : a tall black man Michael very kind and always smiling , his Russian wife and their two mixed-race daughters, so we loved him tremendously (i mean all kids of the block) and called him “Uncle Michael” with love and respect . It was back in the 80s. GOOD PEOPLE ARE WELCOME in all times. ❤

I had a black doll in Russia in the 70s. Loved her a lot, she was my favourite.
I was about 5 years old when I saw the African. He was our new neighbor. Young, handsome, in traditional African clothing. I was very glad that we had such a neighbor.

у меня была почти похожая история, мне было 4 года, Москва, автобус, я сижу на коленях мамы и смотрю в окно, затем поворачиваю глову и замечаю на ручке сиденья, темную руку, поднимаюсь глазами по руке и в ужасе ору на весь автобус: "Мама, смотри, горелый!!!" 😅

А у меня в детстве (еще при СССР) был какой-то детский журнал или книга про жителей Африки. И люди там были раскрашены прямо совсем черной краской. Я спросила отца, почему они черным раскрашены. Он объяснил, что есть континент, там люди все с черной кожей. А потом увидела у него виниловую пластинку с фото чернокожего исполнителя. Отец мне сказал, что вот африканец, это чернокожий человек. А я поверить не могла, спорила, что у него кожа не черная😂. В общем, для меня он оказался не вполне чёрным.
У меня много родственников с азиатскими корнями. А солнце в той местности жарит очень хорошо. И все загорают так сильно, что не отличишь по цвету от мулата. Но вообще темнокожие ребята, конечно, бросаются в глаза. Особенно зимой. Впрочем, как и рыжие, например.
I saw a black person for the first time when I was studying in St. Petersburg, I was 20 at the time. I just went to have a lunch in the cafe near my university and saw a white and a black girls sitting at the next table and conversing in English. Man, that was hard, but I made myself not stare at her, because I know how unpleasant it is to be stared at. I think the most captivating thing for me is the way light is reflected against black skin and the difference in bone structure of the face. (I hope it doesn’t sound too creepy 😅)

The main reason why people STARE is the INTEREST . Like in the animal world , people stare to understand the INTENTIONS of a stranger who arrived to their homeland . And if they see that intentions are GOOD, they calm down and want to communicate and be FRIENDS. If they see AGGRESSION, they want a stranger to LEAVE . As simple as that 😊 Stay cool stay friendly 🤙🏽

No African during that period could have traveled from Africa to Russia. He was indigenous to Russia. In fact most of Europe was swarthy. I can literally make a video and provide sources. I have no issue with pale complexion europeans, but you need to tell the truth. You derive from the caucus mountains.

Я из Иркутской области. В живую впервые увидела чернокожего лет в 13. Я тогда на него засмотрелась, но мама меня одёрнула и сказала, что нельзя так пялиться на людей, ведь им может быть неприятно. Потом переехала в город покрупнее, где побольше чернокожих, и меня они перестали удивлять. А относилась всегда ко всем расам нормально и не разделяла людей по этому признаку.
Человек никогда не видел чернокожего. Я тоже пялилась, когда в 7 лет впервые увидела такого человека. Что тут такого? @@Nikita_Miami

You can't go wrong with Moscow or St. Petersburg. But a lot of people saying to check out rural areas, I haven't been in such places so can't advise where to go.

If other Slavs count, I live in Serbia and only in the last 10 or so years in Belgrade can we more often see people of different skin color. If I saw someone of different skin color when I was younger (be it black or Asian or Indian or even Native American) it sparked interest. For example, there was a Peruan street band approx. 20 years ago. Hundreds of people knew them personally, because we were all interested in their culture. To top that, they even played traditional Peruan music. How could it not be interesting? I would not come up to a random person now, but I always smile when I see somone of a different skin color - you simply know they are not from this country in 99% of the cases and the smile and a quick look are instinctive because I want to them to feel comfortable here. It's like when someone comes to your home and you want to make sure they have everything they need. Also, looking at something you are not overly familiar with is instinctive. You sort of have to, whether you want to or not. :) It only means that we are not accustomed to seeing many non-white people in our country, not even in the capital. Overall, you're welcome to come and I sure hope you feel as comfortable as you seem to be in Russia or even more, if possible. :)

I want to show respect to my Russian friends and be able to speak it fluently someday. Since you mentioned the airport, I am a pilot and really considering getting some additional ratings to finally get into a flying career that I was supposed to do 20 years ago. Moving to Russia may be idea to finding that job. Many places to fly around the country of Russia.

У нас в маленьком городе много-много лет назад появилась семья Он был из Африки , врач - гинеколог Очень хороший врач Спас много женщин , работал в роддоме , оперировал , позже преподавал в медицинском училище Я лежала в блоке интенсивной терапии после кесарево Его пригласили для консультации к сложной пациентке После консультации он подошел и ко мне, спросил как я себя чувствую, спросил насчёт меня и у медсестры , Его очень уважали Когда он умер, онкология , на прощании с ним было много людей, очень много Сейчас его дочь работает в больнице детским хирургом Хороший специалист , делала небольшую операцию моему сыну , очень приветливая, внимательная Если честно, к ней так привыкли, что никто и не обращает внимания на цвет её кожи Она здесь выросла В городе её уважают, как уважали её отца

It was funny story in one village around Kampala in Uganda. When a crowd of kids have seen me and my colleague they started to shout "Muzungu, muzungu!"

When I lived in South Korea, I was stared at all the time. Sometimes peopled asked to take a photo with me. And it wasn't a provincial city, it was Seoul! I think it's normal and I didn't mind.

It's really rare to meet dark-skinned people in Russia, especially in the outback. It is unusual and causes different emotions: curiosity, interest, delight, confusion, embarrassment, etc. People stare only because many Russians have never seen black people in person. I am Russian. To answer the last question in your video when I see a person of black skin I feel warmth and safety. I of course realize that skin doesn't decide anything when it comes to personality so I don't judge ahead.
But I just had this experience simialr to a girk feom the video when i was small. We were with my grandma in the bus and when going out I saw this tall black man with black hair in a very nice neat white and black suit and with a business leather suitcase. And I was a small kid seeing someone different for the 1st time so I just shouted "wow, grandma, look, a black man!!"
I lived in a small city and I had no phone back then so I didn't even know people of dark skin exist. So it was like seeing a mermaid or a fairy. Very handsome, too.
And this man heard it, turned around and flashed a bright and gentle smile at me. I remember his teeth being so white and his smile full of endearement. I was so happy as a small 8 year old girl!
When I see someone with dark skin I kinda experience this good first impression on the introduction to this culture.
And also I had a really cool maths teacher later when I studied in France. But it was in an age when I already knew well about different cultures so the skin color wasn't such a memorable thing to me.
This first experience as a kid really marked my way of getting to know people different from me.

Я из Москвы. Рядом с моим домом большой международный университет, и очень много чернокожих студентов живут в моем районе. Слышал, они говорят между собой и по-английски, и по-французски, и по-испански. Местные настолько привыкли, что удивляются только дети, наверное. Ни разу не видел, чтобы русские просили этих студентов сфотографироваться или как-то странно на них смотрели. Хотя в Москве, как мне кажется, людям просто вообще всё равно, кто и где тут ходит, лишь бы их самих не трогал никто 😂

И все эти люди прекрасно выполняют свою работу, их тут не только знают, но и любят. В нашей истории не было вражды со странами с темнокожим населением, не было рабства, поэтому нет никаких плохих ассоциаций и негатива, только удивление. Я живу в Ростове-на-Дону и у меня был только хороший опыт общения с темнокожими ребятами, все очень культурно и вежливо себя вели и очень позитивные. К нам обычно приезжают учиться в медицинском вузе, многие играют в футбол, поют, танцуют тут. Я познакомилась через друзей танцоров и впечатления очень хорошие.

Особенно зимой очень удивительно видеть темнокожих людей. Они светятся солнышком, как будто носят его в кармане. Очень приятно смотреть, и греться.😊

I assume because most Russians don't encounter black people often. I was stared as a white woman in both Sri Lanka and China. It's not racism but curiosity, the fascination of the unusual.
Guys, let me share with u something 😅 Actually, sometimes I stare at some people (but I try to be undetected)... firstly I find people with untipical for my country appearance so beautiful 😍 in particular some African girls. Omg that's amazing skin. But I'm pale 😒 and of course I don't want to disturb them asking for pics with me, I guess it's incorrect 🙃
Secondly for me that's really interesting to know about people's culture, their motherland, etc. Our diversity is wonderful ❤️
But I met some people from China being abroad or even here in Russia, lots of them asked me to make selfi with them , just because they found Russian girls really beautiful. Yeap we're all different and we're all beautiful for each other ❤

When I first time saw a black person in my small hometown I really tried not to stare. She was so well-dressed in a beautiful bright colours and her whole appearance just looked stylish and unique(?). I really try not to stare, but I’m so interested in foreigners behaviour and really happy that they have the opportunity to study or live here🥹🥹🥹Like, really, I’m always ready to help or just for a small talk even though my English is terrible😭😭😭🥹🥹🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Тут пару моментов не упомянули. Чаще всего мы темнокожих встречаем в общественном транспорте. Когда мы в дороге, нам тупо скучно, и все, что выбивается из общего фона, привлекает внимание. Второе - прошитое в нашей культуре отношение к "гостю дорогому". Я, например, иногда вижу необычно выглядящего, очевидно, приезжего человека, и катаю в голове мысль, не нужно ли ему чем помочь?

Встречаю в основном иностранцев в транспорте и почему-то первые мои мысли в голове "Хорошо ли он здесь живёт? Нужна ли ему помощь? Он работает?Учится?"
Агрессии нет никогда к ним.
Вроде бы с детства видишь разных людей по телевизору, но когда впервые встречаешь вживую, всё равно какой-то легкий шок есть, что они и вправду существуют. Это как при встрече с известным человеком.
Тот случай, когда я действительно позволил себе разглядывать чернокожего человека - мы ехали в автобусе, была давка и я с дичайшим любопытством довольно близко рассматривал пигментацию на его руке, где переход от светлой кожи ладони к темной. Просто очень интересно, как это у других людей устроено))

Первый раз африканца я увидела в 1979 году (мне было 5 лет) из окна своей квартиры в Костроме, довольно далеко: он шёл по тротуару с противоположной стороны от нашего дома. И мы с братом не поверили своим глазам! Потом видела африканцев в Москве
I don't stare but keep an eye for few secs with interest and a smile. I traveled a lot around the world and used to meet people of different races. So I stopped paying attention to skin colors. In 2011 I had been to Nigeria on business trip and stayed at some location deep in country side. So I felt myself there the same as guys feel in Russia. I assume I was the first white skin female they saw in the area. But even though i got used to skin color around what astonished me there and what I couldn't resist to stare at - facial scars that represented belonging to that or another local tribe. As I have never seen it before - it was unexpected but so intriguing that I asked my local colleagues for an explanation of those scars origin. We learn as long as we live :)

I'm a Black woman who've traveled to Mexico, Canada, and to many Asian and Middle Eastern countries back in the 80's and thru the early 2000's.

I've always been the type to learn about the people and culture of an area I'm going to. I feel that not only is it important to learn new perspectives in life, but I also felt the dual burdens of not only representing America, but Black people in general....
Funny thing is most of the people I met thought I was from S.E. Asia, or Guam, lol! 🤦♀️ 😭
Anyway, I got lots of stares from people which made me very uncomfortable at first - my having blue eyes didn't help either! But then I began trying to put myself into their shoes (not literally of course, that would be awkward 😏) to understand. This wasn't easy because I grew up in a multi-ethnic city. Once I understood, this helped me to open up, relax and enjoy everything and everyone around me.
But I also have this weird ability to really fit in wherever I am. My - at the time - Filipino friends though I a Filipina. A Japanese woman swore up and down that I was Japanese even though I obviously don't look like one; it's only because my mannerisms and behavior became Japanese! 🤣
