In this video, we will ask five Cape Verdean women what they think about black Americans and Africans. This is a fun video, don't take anything to seriously (no crybabies, please).
00:00 -- Introduction
01:45 -- What do you think about black Americans?
05:56 -- What are the cultural differences?
13:39 -- Are Cape Verdians black or white?
19:10 -- Is there discrimination in Cape Verde?
24:00 -- Would you date a foreigner?
31:03 -- Bonus content
Carla is not speaking about her personal feelings. She is describing what she has seen in the society. Please watch the entire video before rushing to judgement.
They are us.
There's nothing to be outraged about. They enjoy what they are, they like black phenotype, they are suspicious and feel detatched by other African countries or general African identity. This is absolutely the norm. The Africaness comes from the colonizers gaze, an outside perspective. Actually the less brainwashed Africans are the ones that don't see themselves just like their western conquerors saw them , "just black"
When Carla talk like that, she needs to be clear. She is a group of them. Even Caboverdiano coming from outside are complaining about those people. After our independencia in 1975 , from Portugues colony we were 5 countries.4 of us started getting more envolved with another African country flags, dresses, pictures. Started teaching at school things from Africa. Cabo verde was not doing it. Or if they did it was very few. We can see now the result those people are very confused they do not know what they are , they do not know theAfrican geography too .Even those are dark skin ,they get a lot of descimination from light skin. They have lot of problem about skin color. It is terrible. I like Cabo Verde Government they are working very well to compare with another 4 countries.
Fungo pin that long comment so all them them trolls and they confused creatures can read what I said they out here to hate and troll the hate is real.....
@@zezinhamendes2502 I’m sorry I’m confused, what four countries are you talking about?
This is a true Definition of self hate. Period
All they have to do is to look in to the mirror to get a definitive answer about their identity.
Self hate? I can guarantee that Cape Verdeans are 100% one of the least « self hating » African people
You mean wisdom. What is Civiliter Mortuus?
I don't think they hate themselves. They are more exposed to "rich" (they assume tourists are rich) African Americans and they have also witnessed the lifestyle of "poor " ( immigrants) Africans. As partying islands, they will choose a lavish lifestyle as they see from the tourists all year round.

@@blackmagic6 I believe that the reason for the few those that may not consider themselves as Africans is because CV is left out a lot when people talk about Africa. Sometimes in maps CV is not even shown. If it wasn’t for AFCON the soccer tournament, CV wouldn’t be known as it is now. A lot of CV’s don’t even know their own history. I just went to a CV museum in Rhode Island, & i found out that CV was the first Africans to land in the USA. Many people including myself didn’t know this. As you've pointed out there needs to be a campaign to educate the youth in CV about your history to counter act this mental drift and delusion. The common mistake that we make in Africa is we let the coloniser's account of our history define us. There is an African proverb which says, “Until the lion tells the story, the hunter will always be the hero.” It is our responsibility to share stories about Black History.
Let me also say this, in Nigeria, where I'm from we are also delusional. Not about being black or African but we show love especially to the Europeans who have a document track record of atrocities to us. Trust and believe on many levels we Nigerians are asleep and gullible. SMDH.
Bro, you said in 1977 you were on your way to the States. What a coincidence because in 1977, after being born in the Uk my family returned to Nigeria. We couldn't afford to fly so we took a cargo vessel that was a month at sea and stopped off at the Island of Las Palmas ...... I will never forget it. I remember my short stay in Las Palmas as being a beautiful island.

PETER TOSH: "No matter where you come from as long as you are a black man/woman you are an AFRICAN"
A black person should not be determined by the colour of the skin but by the true knowledge of his or her black history. Throughout history to date black people have made this mistake of associating blackness to skin colour and it has cost them dearly. It's through true history(not the compromised one we are taught everywhere) that a black person truly and unapologetically claim to be black. That's where the, Identity, self-esteem and belief in themselves come.
@@kevinmax25 ok but if you know your culture you claim your culture, not your skin tone as a identity. There's no such thing as colour as ONE culture. No "white" no "Yellow" no "black". These are western colonialism boxes and expired soon . Even colonizers had to deal with wholly different identities and histories among same skin tone. Same thing of other continents, what a surprise 🙄

Most black Americans are from West Africa, and The Brazilians are from Angola and the southern Africa . ignorance is a disease of the infected by the colonial powers.
To be "from somewhere" you have to be directly connected to the area, tribal culture, languages, and food from BIRTH. We are our own group, descended from parts of africa that were renamed and rearranged 🥱 after we were sold. 🇺🇲ethnogenesis happened in 🇺🇲, and we all know how important tribe and ethnicity is to a west african aka LET IT GO

@@AfricanMaverick Black Dominicans exist. That’s like saying that Black-Americans don’t exist just because there are also White-Americans. The continent of North America which includes all Caribbean island countries like the Dominican Republic, are melting pots of different races. Being Dominicano is about nationality, not ethnicity or “race”… Majority of Dominicans are as physically Black in color, facial features, and hair texture as your average Cape Verdean person.
@@HuesoAmarilloAfricana Okay, I never knew there were Africans in the Dominican Republic. Either way, it seems like the average Black Dominican doesn't have the same facial features as Black Cape Verdeans, but maybe the hair texture and the black skin colour. Also, Cape Verdean is not an ethnicity too. They are two main ethnic groups, the badiu and the sampajudo.
@@AfricanMaverick I believe that the faces of many African descendants in the diaspora look the same. People from Cape Verde, remind me of people in Dominican Republic, Angola, and Brazil, especially. I have done a lot of traveling and once you see people in person, you realize how limiting the media is when it comes to accurate portrayals of entire regions. People in Jamaica remind me of people of Cameroon and Nigerians (especially Igbo people). Our Black-African ancestors genes are the strongest.

I am a West African that has lived in the West for over three decades and I always challenge people of different cultures/ethnicities who immigrate to the West and complain about racism. I do not deny that rascism exist in the West. But we of other cultures also need to look closely at our prejudice towards even ourselves before we accuse others. Because you cannot expect someone who is sooo different from you to accept you entirely when you can’t even accept your neighbour who is close to you in many ways.

Thx a lot
We P.O.C have to unleash/ unlearn this brainwashed mind from our roots, otherwise we will restore it to the upcoming generations, like ever since happening
This is very pedestrian to say the least. Comparing common human vagaries to a structured system of hate that has eliminated millions in the world is really disheartening and a total lack of understanding of the meaning of racism.
It shows the little you really know. There will always be wranglings within humans but a structured system of hate that regarded others as semi - humans shouldn't be compared with normal human squabbles, because they are not. In all the cultural and ethnic differences, the only race that came up with a structured system of hate was the white race. And that's what we are still suffering from today. The residue of hate they left behind during slavery that mopped into colonialism is still hurting everybody today.

Black America 🇺🇸 stand up ✊🏾
The media's portrayal of Africa as a poor or desolate continent mirrors their depiction of black Americans in the media. This representation is not only unimpressive but also contributes to a state of denial among black individuals, shaped by the system designed by Europeans. It's absurd that someone can print papers as a currency in exchange for raw natural minerals like gold or diamonds from other countries. This is the core of the problem! They live in Africa and yet see themselves as better than others on the same continent because the Europeans decided to entrap them in a different mindset. Turning brothers against each other is a problem for us as a people.

Cape Verdeans are considered Creole people due to the unique historical and cultural processes that shaped our identity. The term "Creole" refers to a group of people who emerged from the mixing of different ethnic and cultural groups, primarily during the colonial period. Over time, there was significant intermarriage and cultural blending between the Portuguese settlers and the African slaves. This mixing of European and African ancestry is a key characteristic of Creole identity.
• Language: Cape Verdean Creole, a Portuguese-based creole language, emerged as the lingua franca of the islands. It combines elements of Portuguese with African languages, reflecting the mixed heritage of the population.
• Traditions and Practices: Cape Verdean culture incorporates aspects of both Portuguese and African traditions, evident in music, dance, cuisine, and religious practices. For instance, the morna music genre blends African rhythms with Portuguese melodies.
Creole Identity: Cape Verdeans identify ourselves as a distinct Creole people, recognizing our mixed ancestry and unique cultural heritage. This identity is celebrated and maintained through language, traditions, and community practices
• Colonial Influence: During colonial rule, the Portuguese often classified mixed-race populations as "Creole," distinguishing them from both the European settlers and the African slaves. This classification influenced how we viewed ourselves and our place in society.
• Post-Independence: Since gaining independence from Portugal in 1975, Cape Verde has embraced its Creole identity as a symbol of national unity and cultural pride.
• Diaspora: The Cape Verdean diaspora, spread across various countries, continues to embrace and promote our Creole identity, further reinforcing the notion of being a Creole people.
WE ARE PROUD CAPE VERDEANS/CREOLE, WE LOVE THE ISLAND, THE PEOPLE , THE LANGUAGE, THE CULTURE.
Thanks for the outline of CV history, culture, and identity. You state it’s a distinct Creole nation, but I wonder if we’ll see the same colourist hierarchy that we see in other Creole communities around the world, where white is alright and the darks have to stay back?
@@airmat9What about people mind there business and respect how racially ambiguous people who are mixed. The one drop rule is mostly being forced upon mixed people by mostly blacks. Do you have anything to say about that ?
@@Renzee-ct4wz looking racially ambiguous is perhaps someone’s own business, but it’s possibly another’s business when a racially ambiguous person fills the space designated for black. Where do you see mostly blacks pushing the ‘one drop rule’? You know who created it right?
Look. It doesn't even matter..okay. Whatever you are or think you are, just live well.
@@Renzee-ct4wzNo. That one-drop rule is from the whites who considered their race superior. Black people only accepted because what will anyone do? That created a solidarity of all the 'black' people. If a drop of your ancestry is black then the white folk consider you wholly black. That is Europe and America.
South African society considers mixed people as another category they call coloureds.
During Apartheid the whites viewed them as slightly higher but lower than them nevertheless.
Go to other regions of Africa like East Africa where these concepts almost don't exist at all. Nobody cares about race...unless if you are mzungu from Europe because there's bad history about that.
And you will have many people much lighter than you are. All shades.
The understanding today is a black person is one whose skin has melanin. Can be to whatever degree

Glad to see this documentary. It’s an interesting topic of how colonialism destroys race and culture. I never consider mixed race ppl as one race, it’s disrespectful to all parties. I once asked a light skin mixed race Cape Verdean woman at work back in the early 00’s “Are there Black ppl in Cape Verde”? I was generally curious because here in New England at that time, I only seen mixed race/lighter skinned Cape Verdeans who don’t consider themselves Black, and avoid mixing with Blacks/dark skinned ppl. Most of them look at their lighter skin as a badge of honor and date/marry White or lighter in order to continue Whitewashing their culture (much like the Creoles in the southern U.S.). She then responded in disgust stating “What do you mean, we’re African”. I then responded with “Yes, but not all Africans are Black, look at Charlize Theron”. She then turned away and never spoke to me again and seemed to talk trash at work with others about me from then on. It’s sad. I was trying to educate myself by having a realistic conversation with someone of the Cape Verdean culture only to be confronted with ignorance. Cape Verdeans are truly a divided culture when it comes to race just like many other Blacks who suffer from colorism. It all stems from European colonization, insecurity, and ignorance. SMH

Im a black American male, i had a long healthy relationship with Cape Verdian woman. When i met her she educated me on her African heritage.
Where she from?
I hope u educated her and her family aswell

So sad because the colorism from the colonizers destroyed their mindset
It’s not colonialism at this point, it’s personal ignorance!
It’s what they see on tv and social media from black people
Thanks god the colonialism made Cabo Verde a really Democretic country in AFRICA .
It's nothing compared to how messed up it is in the USA

Hahaha wtf is this shit🤣We as Cape Verdeans are proud Africans and we also recognize that. I think it is a shame that this brother asks such questions to young women who are influenced by social media. Why don't you ask the same question to the old generation? I am deeply ashamed of this interview🤦🏽 for the people who don't know, Cape Verde consists of 10 islands and not everyone is and thinks the same!

Listen, I’m a Gen X who was brought up in a (San Vicente)Cape Verdean household. Let me tell you, growing up in Senegal W Africa, every body
I knew despised “mainland Africans” and liked to call themselves Portuguese. You have to realize, Cape Verde was one of the last African countries to gain its independence (in 1975, not too long ago in retrospect). And Cape Verde until not too long ago, had a flag that affiliated w/the African colors. But then, they decided that they would rather ally w/the European colors. So that tells you everything.
My family vehemently forbade us girls to date “those black ppl”. There is a strong push to “whiten” the race. And anybody in this thread who tells you otherwise is lying.
Cape Verdeans are sell outs. Period!
Yep! What’s the matter? Can’t handle the truth!? 😂
I am a Jamaican and I like how those young ladies articulate themselves. I think i find it somewhat refreshing the way they answered those questions there culture means a lot to them I think so i wouldn't come down hard on any of them. I would say they handled themselves quite well.🇯🇲🇯🇲
This second young lady speaks intelligently. ❤
All I can say to that is I'm totally amazed at this type of thinking.
It is surprising to hear some of them not identifying as blacks and Africans but you have to understand the historical background of colonialism and the psychological damage it did to them. Proper and right Education would free up their mindset and heal this psychological self hating and toxic colonial mindset. However, unfortunately like other parts of African continent there is no political will to do cultural revolution in order to offset and change these types of Eurocentric mentality and colonial legacy
Cape verdeans all black people are from Africa in case you all did not know,Do you think white people see you all as white no they don't
40% of their genes come from europe
who cares about how white people sees us, we careless about others, only cape verdean opinion matters. no cape verdean identify as white. we identify as creole.

One of my favorite singers is from Cape Verde, Cesaria Evora.
Remember the Cape Verdean rhythm and blues group Tavares. They were very good and sounded just like a traditional Black American group. They were hot in the 1980s.
Evora is the best..
Good to know that a lot of people appreciate her work. I remember listening a lot of her songs while living in China about a decade ago... Sweet memories
First of all thank you for highlighting Cape Verde and their mindset when it comes to social interactions and views ..... especially with people of African descent. listening to their point of view, I find it extremely sad that they are conflicted and in some ways delusional about who they are. The ones you interviewed are clearly African. I found it ironic that one woman referred to Africans as being "black" but she was darker than Willie. I'm hearing parallels with the Cape Verdean mindset to that of many Brazilians, who were also enslaved and colonised by the Portuguese, and the way they feel about themselves. When it comes to slavery, colonisation, exploitation and racism, the Portuguese have a lot to answer for. SMDH.
You can find the same f'd up mindset america.among some black people here .And yeah it's sad.
cape verdean mindset = no shithole cities so good mindset
Our sistars from Cape Verde recognize we are the same people at the "Black Root." ⚫️ They also know deep down inside the Black ⚫️ Man is a "God."!!!!!

I find it difficult to understand dark skin people who dislike other dark skin people who are both of African descent. You will never find every person in any group to have the same mindset.
Well when will you understand that black people are like diamonds in the rough. You don’t appreciate it at first sight. Would you rather paint on a white canvas or a black one? White of course, but black is just a unique canvas.
Bingo.
It’s not the color, it’s the culture.
Babylon blood is a disaster.😢
They are uneducated
I love these ppl. They seem very truthful. More than some of your other interviews. I notice a lot of the other interviews you did with other Africans they were totally ignorant. These ppl seem more open minded. ❤
Ignorant of what ? Please say it unless I’ll just take it as hate from your side .
my wife is half Cape Verdean, she does not have negative views about black Americans or black people in general. ignorance is common in all ethnic groups so I take this as just a sample of views from different individuals.
@14:14 if you travel to any Latin country (French, Spanish, Portuguese…) it’s the same dynamic.
There is something inhuman about the French, Portuguese and the Spanish that whenever they are. the black people can not succeed.
yes & it's crazy in Latin America, they worship white skin
Great job, Willie! These women are truly beautiful. While living in Florida, I had the opportunity to meet a Cape Verdean woman. Unfortunately, she held an unfavorable attitude towards Black individuals, which was quite off-putting. Thank you for clarifying things.
It's the media portrayal of us in these other countries
LOL as "Amigo" thing makes sense to me as a South African because we call the Somalians here... "My Friend"
Slavery did a lot of evil things to our forefathers and mothers who were forcefully removed from Africa long ago.

No matter where you come from
As long you have black skin
You are an African
No matter your nationality
You have got the identity of an Africa

😂😂😂😂 I want to know what movies they are watching because it seems like most of the people you interview say they get their impression of us from the same sources
It’s the same 15 movies going back to the 90’s. Boys n the Hood…FRIDAY… Menace 2 Society… Poetic Justice… etc.
@@SaulTeeBalls 😂😂😂😂😂 that’s sounds about right

I had always planned to visit Cape Verde. But I think that will wait for about the next 50 yrs
The mind was captured and destroyed 😢 may God help our race.
Cape verdeans are not your race, they are mixed race and as mixed race have the right to choose between one of the sides (Europe, Africa) or even both. And this choice is none of your business, the people from Capeverde choose for themselves. That is what is called freedom
@michaelmatisse2808 not all cape verdeans are mixed race. We Badiu are not mixed race. We are Black African. So yeah he's right. It's his race.

Black Americans, Cape Verde love you ❤
Yep both renegate their black ancestry

Exactly my thoughts. They reject their blackness for the colonizer
Cape Verdeans are more like Brazilians I wouldn’t say Dominicans.
I truly think that there is a economic dynamic that was not brought up in your video which can help bring some context. In Cabo Verde, there a lot of foreigners that come from different countries to live in the country. They primarily end up selling knock off goods in the country and drive local merchants out of business. Since it is a small island, the local sellers cannot compete. There is resentment that does build up from the locals against foreigners because their means of living are taking away.
😂😂 talking about they work work work. Idk what her family does, but they need to go outside, cause we be outside ALL SUMMER round here
Shout out to Cape Verde. As a black American its all love.💪💪💪
I can't lie they showed a lot of love to Black Americans and show a lot of understanding then what to what i seen towards lot of the videos reference to Black Americans
Cape Verdeans are diaspora Africans themselves they really need help to understand just like many Africans big up #Morocco: king.. they don’t even know what they are. black people unite. What the Cape Verdean people seem to be saying is the African culture is different. They say black and white but it actually refers to cultural differences, not race. Race is a European invention. People of color should not be concerned about race. Leave it to the folks that invented it.

100% correct but as Africans we have been brainwashed and bought into racial identity even amongst ourselves as Africans, light skinned is considered not African enough by some and considered more of beauty than dark skin by some, dark skin people are mainly to be treated with contempt and to be discriminated across the globe .🇿🇦🇿🇦
