Have to agree with you guys. The new Phantoms have more amenities, but cannot match the looks & class of the pre 1967 Clouds & Phantoms.

The days when a Rolls Royce Phantom was a thing of taste and refinement. Not a great lump of metal filled with electronic gadgets and silly things like the starlight roof. Fine for people who like that sort of thing, but that won't include traditional Rolls Royce buyers.

You are ofcourse correct but Rolls-Royce has always had its fair share of tasteless owners. Even back in the 1920s and '30s Rolls-Royce was often considered a bit showy and 'nouveau riche' for some members of the British aristocracy who preferred the more reserved Daimler limousines of the time. In fact, the Royal family also used Daimlers - they didn't own Rolls-Royces until after WW2. Once, Rolls-Royce was quintessentially British (or more specifically, English) - nothing was a greater symbol of the English ruling class. The new Rolls-Royces are aimed at a very different clientele. Today's vehicles are conceived for a Global market of celebrities, oligarchs, and self-made tycoons; the self-conscious and shamelessly promoted pretensions of "tradition" and "class" are little more than marketing abstractions. The modern cars are certainly excellent and very well built - but there is always a nagging feeling about the lack of authenticity. The new cars have captured the attention of a whole new generation of admirers who never cared about Rolls-Royce before BMW took over. But those of us who really love the marque and its history, are all too aware that the vehicles from Goodwood, as good as they may be, are Rolls-Royces in name only.
