Technically Uber is not a taxi service.
Thing is even if it is private hire a taxi is transport for the public to use
@@Booka3141 i would say uber is more of a private hire, a proper taxi is more like public transport
Uber is 100% a loss. It's private hire, not public transport. Public Transport unreliability and missed connections means a loss in my book.
Is it available to the public? Yes. That counts.
19:43 “Ethan is quite good at the public transport thing though” - “This isn’t looking good Ethan” 😂

I read that in Clarkson voice on my head 😅
It would be funny to hear the odd homage to TG within these challenge’s, everyone agrees that these three are the spiritual successor to the Grandads of the car show. 👍
Brilliant!
I heard Clarkson's voice
Can I just say that in a world of CZcamsrs buying exotics, this is so so so refreshing. I love buying a cheap car and seeing how far you can go or how long till it dies.
I agree. The only downside was seeing how bad Alex' lane discipline was on the motorway. Virtually every shot showed him lane-hogging with nothing to the left of him!
Alex for the win. If you miss the train and bus. You have to get the next one not get an Uber boys!
But hey great episode as always!
Uber definitely doesn't count as public transport - it's private transport because only you or your friends are in the car, it isn't shared with the public for your journey. Great video, memories of old Top Gear!

And Ethan needs to replace the rear shock and give it a full service
Ethan with a spring compresser ?? 😲
Definite win for the car. To be honest I think the lads missed a trick by sitting on a train for 2 hours and not researching a backup plan
The bus *was* the backup plan, but it turns out their research differed from what they found when they arrived at the actual bus stop.
I would love to see this Passat get a full interior and extrerior detail, these B5.5 are really nice to drive especially with that 1.9TDi engine.
Maybe try to sell it for a profit to someone who will himself take care of it.
Its on 265,000 miles. Realistically its not even worth what they paid for it even in better condition.
Inky blue is a lovely colour
@@ceirwan depends how complete the service history is, some cars wear miles like that fairly well.
@@justkomodo I'm sure they do, or it can. But its a hard figure to look past as a buyer. I don't see it ever being worth much more than what it is now.
Once they get to this age, everything is starting to wear out, suspension parts, rusty brake & fuel lines, the engine itself, steering components, power steering hoses, interior parts etc.
@@ceirwan true, second hand prices are fairly crazy atm for medium sized cars though. I’d say anything with decent service history and a new MOT should be going for £1000 minimum, otherwise I want to know what’s seriously wrong with the car. The shock absorber on this one explains the price: you couldn’t say it’s in reasonable drivable condition until that’s replaced, but £1000-1500 is what you have to pay for a “reliable” cheap car these days rather than £500-1000
Great episode! Nice to see my neck of the woods on such a good channel, too. The whole drive from Sheffield through Snake Pass and down into Glossop (fun stops right there) is a great experience every time.
I would definitely be interested in seeing this same challenge, but with the roles reversed. Watching Alex try to do public transit could be pretty funny.
It would be like when they made The Stig take the train 😂
The maths at the end perfectly demonstrates why public transport in Britain is a joke. That a family of 4 can buy a car to travel from London to the Peak District and it cost the same as a train is absurd. And those Passats are great.
Also could sell the car when they got back. Probably for more.
Just a shame the insurance would be 3x the value of the car

Absolutely brilliant 👏 Well done boys. Can we have more of these challenges, it's just like the old Top Gear but better.
Using an uber for the last stretch would be not much different from Alex just renting a car for the day to do the trip. I would definitely say this was a victory for Alex.
renting is not buying,
uber is a public transport just like taxi, uber was not excluded before race
You can just rent a helicopter, becasue anyone can, so is that also a public transport?
The difference being you have to have a driving license to rent a car but you don't need one to get an uber
@@vampirwrr What is the main benefit and point of using a public transport? I'd say it is a price, because it comes much cheaply than a car. But Uber is not cheap, it is basically a taxi.. Thus I would definitely say the win goes to Alex.
@@vampirwrr So they could also hire a limo to just take them the whole way there. The whole argument is silly, this is meant to be public transport vs car, if you start including the car in the public transport, then the challenge completely falls apart. The public transport literally failed those two, so they had to resort to using a car.
This is hilarious 😂 think Alex won tho. Uber doesn’t count

Love a B5.5 Passat, nearly 20 years on from being discontinued and they're still one of the best cars you can buy bang for buck. Comfortable, loads of room, handle "well enough", plenty of cars came equipped with multifunction steering wheels and cruise control, loads of torque from the PD which run for miles and can run on cooking oil...
Edit: an Uber isn't public transport, being available to the public and being transport does not public transport make. Public transport follows designated routes for set fees.
The B5/.5 handles like an Audi since it has multilink - not like a quattro but an Audi nonetheless! (Unless your bushings are done which they often are with older cars)
Not sure the PD engineers can handle cooking oil...
Percy should be a trade up car now, keep flipping them and see what you can get up to by the end of the year
Great video. Looking forward to seeing the next video. I'm a massive fan of the passat, especially with 1.9 tdi. 👍
Brilliant episode. That Passat deserves some love, it's a survivor that could last many more miles.
Yeah! It is a good episode. Really like these TDI engines
This car (which won via disqualification) sounds like an ideal basis for another trading up video.
It's clearly a quality car, just needs professionally cleaned and that damper issue sorted. It can be Miles's adopted cousin.

Technically Alex won. He was already in the place when the other two were just approaching the location from the other direction.
It just his stupidity which cost him the victory.
If on the last lap lewis pits and approaches the line but max overtakes him just before the line and crosses it first who wins?
That's no different to when a cyclist or marathon runner celebrates too soon before the line and gets overtaken right at the end they still lost

An uber is not "public transport", as you're not sharing your transport with "the public". So that's a win for Alex in my books.
uber was not excluded before race
You can share taxis with other people... seen it before at bus stops when they're late and in Town when people are off home (that don't know eachother)...
@@vampirwrr doesn't matter we all know what was meant by public transport it's definitely a win for alex
So they could just do ride share or whatever it is and it'd be classed as public transport by that logic
@@Interknetz Fair enough, kinda depends on your definition of "the public" of course. If you consider 1 or 2 strangers as sharing with "the public" then yes by that logic a ride share would be classified as public transport. However if you see "the public" as a larger group of people to share your transport with then no...
But still, in this case they didn't share their ride with anyone, so my logic still makes sense regardless in this particular case 😅
