  • Hydroforming and inflating steel puffer coat armour, in collaboration with artist Hannah Clarkson from the Royal College of Art. It took many hours of welding and metalwork to create each segment of the coat, so this video is a collection of highlights from different stages of the project. I love armour so I had to try it on myself, with assistance from the artist and her friend, when they came to visit and collect the piece.

    Safety note on Aeroforming: Using compressed air at low pressures to inflate metal is safe, wearing protective gloves and a face shield is a good precaution. At low pressure, if a weld cracks it usually lets out a small hiss and the workpiece deflates slowly. This happened multiple times when I made this inflated steel mirror: www.connorholland.com/sculpture/inflated-mirror

    I think you should've made legs like you did the arms. The way you have those tabs you could bend up to lock the pieces together but make the suit be able to fully articulate on that joint.

    Damn, my weird knowledge has dug up a card; a term for this style of armour would be a 'panoply,' and there's some pretty wild bronze ones from the early age of human warfare.

    the air forming you did at the beginning is dangerous, unlike water, air is elastic and therefore, if a weld fails, it will explode!

    • @ConnorHolland
      @ConnorHolland  Před rokem +2

      Aeroforming with compressed air at low pressure is acceptable, using gloves and a face shield. Hydroforming is used for higher pressure

    • @1312iYo
      @1312iYo Před rokem +1

      @@ConnorHolland I had the same concern and was wondering if the pressure was low enough to be safe. I felt uneasy until I read your answer, some other might too. I'd welcome a pinned comment explaining the safety limits of aeroforming.
      edit : now that I have seen the rest of the I must say liked the goofyness of the first fitment tries :)

      @@ConnorHolland the danger increases with volume even at low pressure. And this build was large. 100 PSI wouldnt be too scary on 0.5liter/ 0.13 gallon (but definitely will make a nasty bang). But 50 PSI is definitely scary on a 10 gallon build like yours. U can see what happens when truck tires explode, the person gets thrown several meters away
