  • The Ukrainian Air Force is using iPads, or similar tablets in the cockpits of its Soviet-era jets to enable rapid integration of modern Western air-to-ground weapons.
    #Ukraine #War #Weapons
This has been confirmed by Undersecretary of Defence for Acquisition and Sustainment Dr. William LaPlante.
While many questions remain about the tablet and how it exactly works, there’s now footage showing it fitted in cockpits during combat (or at least live-fire training) missions.

For anyone wondering, in the footage, it looks like they’re using Foreflight, an IPad App mainly used by almost every pilot for flight planning and navigation.
In General Aviation in USA, almost every pilot I know uses Foreflight (or Garmin for android. They both function practically the same), and I believe it would be the same outside of the US. In terms of aviation as a whole, this is still relatively new tech but that’s because all of aviation is just so old school that it took years for the FAA to recognize the normal usage of IPads in the cockpit.
I don’t know how they’re using it to control their weapon systems, but this isn’t a new or uncommon thing. It also isn’t “old school” or making use of resources, they’re just doing something the rest of the world already has been doing. What’s weird is that they’re using it for fighter aircraft but I’m not a fighter pilot so idk. A reason I can think of is that using an iPad is better and more cost effective than installing GPS into these fighters.
