    I think another huge benefit to signing Onana is that it would almost single-handedly allow Jaden Sancho to put in elite performances on the left wing. It might sound a little strange, but I think it makes sense. It's a bit of a wall of text though, so you'll have to bear with me.
    Sancho has struggled on the left with a fullback like Shaw behind him. He works really well when surrounded by players he can link up with, which on the left wing means that he benefits hugely from an overlapping fullback, and that's just not Shaw. Ten Hag has tried to 'solve' this by playing him as a 10 and Bruno Fernandes out wide, but this seems like a bit like a game of musical chairs where nobody plays where they'd really prefer.
    Malacia is a bit more of an attacking fullback than Shaw, but there are two issues. First off, he's not putting in the same level of performances as Shaw. This means less playing time, but even then, you might expect the pairing of Malacia and Sancho to work when rotating Shaw, and United could even improve significantly here by selling Maguire and signing an elite attacking fullback like Alphonso Davies. Easy, right? Except there's another issue. If Malacia looks for the overlap, what happens to the space this leaves behind?
    The obvious solution is for the left-sided midfielder to drift wide when the fullback overlaps, but if that midfielder is Eriksen, then there's a problem. Eriksen is really intelligent positionally, and this makes him a really good presser, and good at denying passing lanes. It's not easy to keep someone like Salah or Saka or Silva/Mahrez quiet like that, but Eriksen could do an okay job, at least when it comes to preventing the direct pass. But if the opposition plays a long ball down the line, then Eriksen is going to lose that footrace. I love Eriksen, but it's the truth. The alternative is for Eriksen to stay 'southside' of the winger; not trying to prevent the direct pass, but having a head start on the footrace. If the opponent beats the press, however, and plays the direct pass, then the main defender between the likes of Salah and a chance at goal is Christian Eriksen, and that really doesn't play to Eriksen's strengths.
    This could of course be solved by playing Mount (or someone like Mohamed Camara if they can't get Mount for a a reasonable price) as the 8, either on the left or the right. This would allow for two defensively solid midfielders in Casemiro and Mount/Camara, which would allow for whoever plays on the left to much more easily drift out wide to protect the area the fullback leaves behind. This sounds perfect.... but there's another catch.
    This whole setup, each change requiring a change elsewhere, would leave United in an extremely restricted position. For Sancho to play well out left, you would need to both play an attacking fullback behind him *and* your new 8 at the same time. If Mount comes off for Eriksen, the whole thing becomes a bust, and everyone starts playing worse. You've practically back to square one, where you're either not giving your players the tools to succeed (Malacia/Davies not being able to overlap makes them *and* Sancho worse) or you have to make big compromises elsewhere. It's a solution on paper, but not over the course of a 38 game season + cups ´+ European football.
    But Onana, I believe, is the solution here. He pushes out much further than the likes of Diogo Costa or David Raya. This allows the centerbacks to split much wider, which is the key to this whole thing working. Now, a long ball down the line basically means playing it to the feet of the left-sided centerback, be it Martinez or Shaw. Eriksen might still not have an *easy* time restricting the direct pass to a world-class winger, but it's playing much more to his strengths than trying to tackle the ball away from them. This allows for the left fullback to overlap much more easily, whether that is Malacia or a new signing like the aforementioned Davies, which means Sancho would have the tools to succeed on the left much more readily.
    As a knock-on benefit, this would mean that Rashford can play up front with less of a cost to the rest of the team. You have another left winger you would expect elite performances from, meaning you can play Fernandes as a 10, Antony on the right, and have a really strong squad. Does this mean that United shouldn't sign a striker? No, they absolutely should. But they're less desperate. This means that someone like Højlund is a more sensible signing, as he would be able to rotate with Rashford semi-regularly, rather than having the main alternative be Martial. If Rashford up front has as high a cost as it did last season (making both the rest of the team worse, which in turn gave him less to work with as a striker), United might feel forced into paying over the odds for a star striker like Kane or Osimhen. Less so with Onana.
    There you have it - Onana would make Sancho much better on the left wing and improve the striker position at the same time. If you read this whole block of text, you're an awesome nerd, and I appreciate you. Please correct any mistakes you can see in my analysis - I'm here to learn as well :)

    • @786Demigod
      @786Demigod Před 10 měsíci +1

      I did read it all and largely agree with your point. If we only get Højlund as a 9 and have to play with Rashford as the main striker next season, it’ll be interesting to see if your hypothesis works.
      As amazing a season Rashford had, he isn’t a 9 out and out so I feel we will still see inconsistencies in front of goal (how long till Højiund gets used to the physicality of the prem?). Our wingers will have to show up big time.
      Good read tho

    • @79AlienFinger79
      @79AlienFinger79 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@786Demigod Thank you :) After looking through statistical analysis of dozens of fullbacks, though, I have to amend my analysis a bit.
      I'd like to try and avoid the trap of treating players like objects or commodities. Talking about a player's statistical performance can often feel like talking about the features of a car or the technical specs of a new phone. How well does it's four-wheel drive function? Does its OS have backwards compatibility issues? I don't want to give the impression that this is how I see players, but it can often come off that way.
      As for the actual analysis, based on where Malacia takes his touches and the data available to me, it's clear that he is more interested in going forward than Shaw, but his productivity in the final third doesn't compare all that favourably with fullbacks across the top divisions. Conversely, his pass completion rates and tackling numbers are through the roof. It seems to me like a very interesting contradiction.
      I don't know if his lack of impact in the final third is a structural issue, if it can be massively improved if, say, he could have an easier time going forward, knowing that the space behind him is covered. It could also be the case of a man whose dreams and ambitions don't align with his existing skill set, and if you'll allow me the indulgence... I kind of find that inspiring, if it is the case.
      Since I don't know, however, I'm tempted to point to an elite attacking left-back as something that I think might be necessary as an addition to a keeper like Onana, if United are to really address the structural issues in the final third. This would mean Shaw oscillating between left-back and left-sided centerback, and it would make sense to sell Maguire to offset the cost.
      There are a number of really good options out there, but Alphonso Davies really is the gold standard, and with his contract negotiations breaking down at Bayern, this could be the most available he's going to be for years. There are other really good options, though, some even linked with United. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

      I honestly think that with Pavard available for £26m and able to play as a right-back, and some really exciting up-and-comers on the market, it would largely depend on which sales are possible, and which players can pull double-duty elsewhere.
      Maybe it would be a bridge too far, maybe it could get done with the right decisions. Mehdi Taremi + Højlund/Orban as strikers, a modest fee for Martial, someone on the cheap end to shore up the number 6 position, selling Henderson and shipping off Greenwood somewhere far off... I think it could get done. But if United decides to sign someone like Tchouaméni, I think you're right. It just becomes too tight.

  • @Henry-sd7vd
    @Henry-sd7vd Před 10 měsíci

    People don't realise how important the modern GK role is. It's the foundation from which our possession football will be based on. The team isn't going to be able to pass around in midfield forever. Once the opposition pressures us and hounds the ball, it's passed back to the GK to recycle possession and reset the positions. This is even more crucial against high pressing teams. DDG was not able to pass under pressure and would often launch it into the air, often losing us possession of the ball. To dominate and maintain possession against elite teams that press high like City, Pool, Sevilla etc we need our GK to be able play around that press and maintain possession with accurate passes and turns. DDG is the better shot stopper no doubt but Onana's better at everything else. And that's without the astronomical wages we pay DDG too.

He has the best distribution I have ever seen from a goalkeeper but if he is an 'iffy' shot stopper (his show reels are one of the weakest I have ever seen in this regard) then he is going to be heavily targeted in that area in the Premiership. This is a very risky purchase at £50 M in my opinion.

    Unbelievable. What Pep Guadiola has wrought upon the football world. Pep becomes THE MAN amongst Managers and plays with a "ball playing" Gk and now EVERYBODY plays that way, or tries. But no one has been able to out play the Master. Mr Treble winning Manager himself. So folks loses their minds about having to have a GK who's got great feet, all the while losing site that the primary job of the GK is to STOP THE FREAKING BALL from going in the Net. Our host spends most of the time talking about Onana like an outfield player. The problem as I see it is that United finished 8th in the league in scoring, scored 3 more goals than Fullham in 10th and finished 36 goals behind City, 30 behind Arsenal and even 10 behind that prolific goal scoring team......Newcastle. Yet, Onana with his ball playing will be a big part of making up all those goals. Guess we are to believe Onana will be the highest scoring GK in football history. And by the way, the Guy they let go, allowed the 3 fewest goals in the league and had 17 Clean Sheets which was almost the half the games they played. Yes, all things being equal the addition of Onana will make United a more feared scoring team. Meanwhile , Kane sits at Spurs. Oh by the way, even Spurs outscored United by 12 goals. Of the 70 they scored Kane had 30. Let that sink in. But hey, United will have a ball playing GK playing out from the back with a team that isn't equipped to play high possession ball control. Maybe Ten Hag is going to get Fernandes and Rashford and Casemiro to be better dribblers so that when Onana plays out from the back they can attack with ball skills.......you know......like PEP. Wonder if you gave United fans a choice which would they prefer, spending a lot on Kane and landed no one else , or getting Mount and a Ballplaying Goalkeeper.

Shot stopping will always be important for goalie no matter how good you are with your feet as a goalie u are the last line of defense for your team and your team depends on u to bail them out of difficult situations game after game. De gea gave us that security for years. You could count on de gea to make that save when needed. I don't want that level of security compromised ever for more ball playing skills.
