I absolutely love the classical music here. I think I heard Satie on another video and whatever piece is played here, it is amazing.

    Great videos Daisuke.
I have the Late Mizoguchi box set, but as yet have only seen Ugetsu, which I found very moving, so I must watch Sansho,
    Some films I found moving:
    The Remains Of The Day
The Browning Version ( Redgrave version )
Far From The Madding Crowd ( Alan Bates/Julie Christie )
The Wind That Shakes The Barley
    An Angel At My Table
    The Elephant Man
The Caretaker ( Robert Shaw's performance)
The Mission ( brilliant Ennio Morricone score)
    My Left Foot
    The Children Are Watching Us
    Walkabout

I too find Only Yesterday very moving. It brought me to tears. Others that come to mind are:

    Never Let Me Go
    Children of Men
    The Shawshank Redemption
    Interstellar
    The Color Purple
    Pan's Labyrinth

Your reaction at the end of your thoughts regarding Only Yesterday was so moving. Obviously that film means so much to yourself and your reaction to it stirred emotions in me that have forced me to order the bluray, thanks for being so honest and baring your soul a little. Not an easy task for most people nowadays and a great quality to have.
Keep up the great work Daisuke.

@@DaisukeBeppu The movie that gets to me the most is 'Night and fog' not for any personal reasons but just the horror of it all. The thing that affects me the most is when the narrator reminds us that we are not much different from
the humans that perpetrated these horrors and if we ever forget them they can indeed happen again. (paraphrasing)
I also find myself in tears everytime I watch Ridley Scott's Gladiator, the ending shots of Maximus going to be with his family again with that uber emotional Hans Zimmer soundtrack, always reminds me of mortality and how losing others close to us is tougher than facing death yourself.
Dont you just love it when cinema stikes right to your core and makes you feel trully alive?
      Thanks again my friend.

Really enjoyed your list and I have added a few to my watchlist as some I haven’t even heard of! I love Sansho the Bailiff and the whole journey of the siblings and the mother who only appears in the beginning and end is so haunting. I’m going to do a video like this too because this is such a great topic but some off my head that I don’t own (will only do those I own for my video as I can show them off) are A Silent Voice, Gladiator, Fisher King, Kwaidan, 12 Angry Men and Y Tu Mama Tambien. Great videos as always and hope your cinematic journey is going superbly!

Apocalypto (At the end I feel like i was dragged along on the journey with the main character. So underappreciated). The Naked Prey is much the same.
Aguire the Wrath of God (its like i as the viewer I feel the slogging through the jungle these people are on)
The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford (the score and photography, mood set by the direction, the narrator's voice...i feel every second of the slow burning melancholy...in a great way)

Great video daisuke. You mentioned a few of my favourite films. When a woman ascends the stairs is a masterpiece I agree it's a very moving experience. Also only yesterday is my favourite studio ghibli film. It's so nostalgic and moving I shed floods of tears when taeko makes her decision at the end of the film. I'm in the UK and a man but I related to her story so much it reminded me of certain things Ive gone through and still going through in my life but obviously not quite the same things. It also felt like a Yasujiro Ozu film to me the way the story was told and the way it looks I'm sure that wasn't an accident. Did you notice that? I'd love you to do an analysis of this film sometime similar to what you did with kikis delivery service. But if its too difficult for you to talk about in great detail I totally understand.

Thank you Daisuke for sharing these and why they move you. Sansho is one I have been wanting to see. Three moving films that come to mind for me are, they may sound a little odd. Divine Secrets of the Ya Yas. This film has got to me where I won't watch it now. Moves me cause of how well it mirrors my childhood. Another is Christine can relate to the character Arnie very much when I think about my middle school years. To me it's a tragic story. Last is Say Anything, its like they followed my Wife and I around when we were dating. It's one we both like to watch from time to time.

Oh yes, one day if you get a chance to see Sansho the Bailiff, please let me know! I know that you have been watching a lot of Japanese films lately, such as the films of Kurosawa, and so perhaps you will find Sansho the Bailiff to be a very interesting watch indeed. I look forward to hearing what you think about it.
And great choices regarding your own "moving" films. I have never heard anyone mention Christine as a moving film, but now that I think about it, you are totally right, and especially when we think about the relationship between Arnie and Christine. It's really beautiful and touching and very sad. Thank you for reminding me of how touching this film is!

One movie that moved me nearly to tears when I first saw it is an Italian film with Cate Blanchett called Heaven. She plays a desperate woman wanting to kill a crime boss, but accidentally kills a cleaning woman. As she's being interrogated by the police, a young translator on the force falls in love with her, and helps plan her escape. What nearly moved me to tears was the Italian countryside and how gorgeously it was captured. And of course this desperate and impossible love the two share - and the ending! Think I'll watch it again tonight. :-)

I have a question Daisuke. Is there any ‘type’ of film you feel most drawn to? For instance, are you drawn to emotionally moving films more or thrilling, suspenseful ones or fun, adventure stories etc. Or is it more dependent on mood or circumstance?

As for your question, what a great question. And thank you for expressing an interest in what I might have to say on a given topic. So, for me, I think it totally depends on mood and circumstance. Also, it is a kind of balance between films that I have seen versus films that are new for me.

@@DaisukeBeppu Sorry for my late reply Daisuke. I would probably agree that it depends on my mood at the given time. Although, I do like to feel challenged, whether that be intellectually, politically, spiritually, emotionally etc. things that I have to wrestle with is something I greatly appreciate in a film. Not to say there isn’t a place for more ‘comforting’ films! But these are just what I’m more naturally drawn to. 😊

  • @Jared_Wignall

Great and very interesting conclusion to this list Daisuke. Very moving stuff. Another film I’ve thought about that moves me is Manchester by the Sea. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but it’s a truly heart wrenching and heartbreaking film. It handles the grieving process of losing a loved on so well that if I say anymore about that particular topic I may spoil a pivotal moment in the film that’s truly shocking and devastating if you haven’t seen it. Casey Affleck plays the lead character to a T. He is the only person I can see in that role and does a stellar job like he usually does and Michelle Williams is incredible as always. I don’t have a lot of words for Williams, but she delivers an incredible performance that complements Affleck’s performance. Everybody is fantastic really, but those two in particular really stand out to me. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend you see it at some point, but be prepared that it’s a very sad film and there is a sense of hopefulness by the end of it, but the journey to get there is so real and sad, yet that sense of hopefulness is a great way to end the film. It’s a film that moves me in a way that I’ve never been moved before and I’m glad it won the Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay Academy Awards it received. I only wish it picked up another Oscar or two, particularly for Michelle Williams. She’s one of those actresses that deserves an Oscar, but there are so many actors and actress that should have an Oscar and don’t that it’s mind blowing to see how many people have never won an Oscar.

Another very interesting video Daisuke, you have an intriguing view on what is moving. I enjoyed hearing you talk about a Bond film as I completely disagree as I personally can't stand Bond films, but I think it is fun to hear a completely different opinion on things as it can give many different insights and make me think differently although I know that my opinion on Bond films will never change. The Devils was one of the best first time watches of last year for me, and as you might remember I watched it because I heard about the film from you, I remember we had a quick discussion on it on Facebook. For me the film was more fun than moving as it had a very interesting dark humor that I tend to love.
