The song that plays on repeat (P.I.M.P. by 50 Cent on steel drums) was absolutely jarring in the theater and would be difficult to replicate at home, in my opinion. Great movie, though - can’t wait to watch it again.
Keep up the outstanding work, Daisuke! My favorite channel on youtube by far.
Hello Daisuke! Great review as always. I’m always struck by your depth of insight into these films, you are able to make me realize things I hadn’t thought of in the days and weeks after my first viewing of this film. I would say the biggest thing that stuck in my mind after seeing this movie was the quote from David Lynch’s “Lost Highway” when Fred tell the detectives “I like to remember things my own way. How I remembered them, not necessarily the way they happened.” I think this can be applied when thinking of the nature of truth and memory within the context of this film, especially with regards to how Sandra perceives her relationship dynamics with Vincent. This also relates to your ideas of perception and how we perceive an event and the potential break between reality and what we think happened (although this begs the question of what “reality” truly is and whether there exists a reality outside of our own perception). Thanks for the video as always and take care Daisuke!
I’ve not seen this film, but I’ve heard quite a bit about it and it’s nice to hear your thoughts about this film and the Criterion release of it. I hope you’re doing well Daisuke, please have a great day and take care!
The version of the film I downloaded has English subtitles hardcoded over the English-language dialogue (plus the French and German dialogue). Was the film released this way?
thanks. i thought it was a very smart and well-executed film, though it didn't resonate for me and stick with me the way it seems to have for you. i wonder if you have ever covered anatomy of a murder, my favorite courtroom film.
The cover of this one wasn't very well received by criterion fans. I can kind of see why, but I also understand the "meaning" behind it.
Overall though, I think it could have had a more mysterious/engaging cover.
A very overrated film this one. Daisuke's reviews are great, as always.
Thank you so much and yours is the first comment!
