Great video! We adore Floating Weeds so much. We are looking forward to going back to A Story of Floating Weeds.
After watching Tokyo-Ga by Wim Wenders, I have wondered if Yasujirō Ozu sharing parts of himself with the character Komajuro, the great master who gathered with his troupe to drink and socialize ...in the same way Ozu famously did with his crew... We watched these movies in rapid succession and those parallels stuck with me.
Great work as always, my partner and I love your analyses. 💜

Sophisticated discussions of Ozu are always appreciated; thank you. Believe it or not, I actually like A Story of Floating Weeds more than the 1959 color re-make. I think it has mostly to do with what I perceive as better pacing, which the comparative run times may reflect. However, what could have made this particular video even better would be if the entire discussion was done with only Japanese title cards, along with English subtitles. But, maybe that's too time-consuming.

Thanks for the informative comments. I think Floating Weeds is very underrated but it is so different from the other late color films by Ozu,in that it is set far from Tokyo and tbe usual plot of a father trying to marry off his daughter is entirely absent. There is no part for Setsuko Hara and Chishu Ryu has only a minor role. There is,for Ozu,some quite strong language and two scenes of violent behavior towards women which is quite unusual. But Ganjiro Nakamura is excellent in the lead role,as he would be in The End of Summer the following year. And I agree that the cinematography is stunning,in particular the use of reds.
