    I'll tend to start watching movies at around 12am or 1am and the other night I put on Stalker and was absolutely glued to my screen for the whole time but didn't know how long that movie was. Needless to say, it wasn't easy falling asleep after the amazing journey it took me on, I didn't get till sleep till 6am, I was in bed with the haunting and beautiful imagery stuck in my head. I'm very excited to dive into Tarkovsky's filmography, I heard Solaris and Andrei Rublev are both masterpieces also.

    I'm a very casual viewer. Film is my passion, it's what I truly adore in life but I feel one should be able to enjoy a film however they would like to. Whether that is on their phone or in chunks or maybe they don't give their fullest attention. Films should be enjoyed however one wants to enjoy a film! Very insightful video and some very funny anecdotes squeezed in as well so thank you for cheering me up here!

    Absolutely loved that story about the titanic theater experience, I was laughing a lot because I was in the same situation with Avatar by James Cameron so we have similar experiences with his films it seems XD. For my viewing habits that aren't related to videos I will be doing (that's when I use my phone to take notes), I like to have all the lights off as it's really hard to see the screen because of the glare from the window so I also try to watch at night too. If I have work the next day I don't really start a movie after 10pm as I try to get up at 7am so I can get ready and then do my hour commute. And I try to go one rewatch then a new movie that way I am continually becoming more of an appreciator of the films in my collection plus it helps me to keep my collection low and the quality high. I have been upgrading too with all the recent 4K Arrows coming so rewatching new restorations and the special features has really been a lot of fun. I haven't been to the theater since Rise of Skywalker but sometime this week I plan on going although I have no idea which movie I'll see. I like to eat after a movie as I get worried about length and bathroom breaks because if it's a first watch (theater or not) I hate having to pause or leave while it's playing as I have no idea what I will miss. Great video as always and I hope you're well.

    This is a great topic for discussion. While listening to your experience during Titanic with all of the flowing water......I had to run upstairs and use the bathroom real quick. Now I'm back, so here are my home video rituals. I never watch a film at home during the daytime, but usually wait until after 7 PM or even later. My TV room, where I keep all of my DVD/Blu-ray collection, is upstairs (a spare bedroom). I have a 40 inch TV and no added sound system. I usually sit in a dark room unless my eyes feel tired and then I turn on a dim ceiling light. Sometimes I watch two movies in one evening. Sometimes, depending on how late it is, I start falling asleep, no matter what the film is. As soon as a film is over I come downstairs to my computer room to record it on my Letterboxd page. I almost never watch any prime time television. On nights when I don't feel like watching a movie I just sit quietly and read. I love being alone in a quiet house!

    I reallly like to engage with a film, so I have to be in the mood to watch a certain movie. I generally rip the DVD to my laptop and watch the film on there. I keep the film on my laptop for some time before deleting, so I can revisit favourite scenes or the movie as a whole. Also using the pause function and moving through the film's fields/frames one at a time, I've found out a few secrets about certain movies. For example at the begining of The Matrix (1999), Neo gives someting to a man who knocks on his door. After carefull scrutiny I found out the item is a DAT casette. I don't have many Bluray discs in my collection, or the facility to rip them to my laptop, so I generally I watch these on my TV via my BluRay player.
    I've only recently dicovered your CZcams channel and started watching your videos Daisuke. I find them interesting, informative and very relaxing to watch, your enthusiasm for films is infectious. Please keep up the great work.

    Pretty amazing how you work your movies in with such a tight schedule between work and family. And funny how you pick movies based on length. Me, I tend to pick movies based on mood. Either matching mine IE; I'm feeling happy - happy movie. I'm feeling sad or angry - moody or action movie. Or to juxtapose my mood, to uplift me, or take the giddiness away, etc. Agree with the distractions, so I tend to watch my movies LATE at night where no one is awake to bother me in any way. But I'm the same like you with my TV's. 26" flat screen in the living room, 14" monitor in my bedroom. Living room movies I watch intently. Bedroom movies are light and hobby oriented. IE; Cartoons, Comedy Shows, Railroad videos. And I'm in the bad habit of falling asleep with them on. LOL

      The day you can sit down with the kids and show them Pink Flamingos... LOL And what are your kids gravitating towards? Action, fantasy, adventure, drama, etc. My young niece likes Harry Potter, which I've never seen any of. But she has made this Hogwarts Express Train model she's all excited to show me as she knows I like trains. I think that's pretty sweet. Hopefully your kids will be able to bond with you like that in the future. You may not like them getting into Super Sexy Sentai - but there's a scene inspired by Vertigo they want you to see. Those are the moments to cherish.

      And if I watch a film late at night, I will not usually be hungry and so I won't usually eat anything.
      When I go to the movie theater, not always, but once in a while, I'll get a small portion of popcorn.

    I'm the same way when it comes to watching films or listening to albums, I don't like to have distractions as much as possible. I prefer to listen to new albums, or ones I've not heard before for the first time on my sennheiser hd 600s and lay down with my eyes closed. Living situatuons have prevented me from listening to the music on a stereo system the way I'd prefer, so most often these days, (and as I've gotten older that's not as frequent) I listen on my headphones. They certainly were a good investment for me, as I also use them for watching films.

    Every time me and wife go to the cinema we never leave and we always wait until the credits have finished before we walk out. As far as watching movies at home, it’s just whenever we want and what we’re in the mood for. Sometimes we watch together and sometimes we’ll watch movies in separate rooms or if either one of us are here alone we’ll just pick whatever 👍

You know, here in Japan as well, or at least in the movie theaters that I sometimes go to here in Tokyo, the majority of people will all stay until the credits end, and everyone will remain silent and won't make any noise until the lights go up. So this is what I am used to whenever I go to a movie theater here in Tokyo. So your comment is really very interesting! By the way, I hope you and your wife are doing well my friend. Cheers.

    Unfortunately my attention span and indeed resistance to calls of nature are not what they were. So that, along with mobility issues, makes cinema attendance extremely problematic. Still I do watch a lot of films at home. As to how that rolls it largely depends on the film. New films (to me) and sub-titled releases will require absolute attention - which means I may have to take a break during the viewing but I sometimes treat myself to a snack during a repeat viewing, especially if I know the dialogue really, really well. But I absolutely won't be leaping up to answer the phone in my study during a viewing (and my elderly mobile is basically only used to summon taxis anyway). As to time - being retired that could be any time day or night though I tend to keep the really outre hours to listening to CZcams videos and meet-ups on headphones.

    Hi Daisuke hope you are well. I don't know how you can function on only a few hours sleep! I get up for work at 5am & I am usually asleep by 10pm the night before. I usually try to watch at least 1 movie a day in the evening after work, sometimes more on the weekend. I prefer to watch movies on my own so I can concentrate properly. Even when I go to the cinema, I try to go early in the day when hopefully the screening room will be empty. At home I watch the majority of films on my 49 inch HDTV but i also have a separate area with a HD Projector & a 106 inch screen which I save for special viewings of my favourite films on blu ray or films that lend themselves to watching on a larger screen (Westerns, David Lean Epics, 2001, Barry Lyndon!). I'm really looking forward to watching the Criterion release of War & Peace on my projector when it is released as I've never seen it.

  • @BaileeWalsh
    @BaileeWalsh Před 5 lety +1

    I rarely go to the theater now, but I'm someone who goes to the bathroom before the movie starts and tries not to have to go during the movie. Usually I'll be seeing an early showing, so I might not drink a lot beforehand to prevent really having to go during the movie. I don't get popcorn or anything from the concession most of the time.
    When I'm at home I actually have the habit of going to the bathroom still before starting the movie, even though I know I can pause it. I tend to watch films at night, too. It depends on what other things I have to do that day for when I will start a movie. I get a lot of schoolwork done at night, so I may be working on stuff late and then start a movie at 1 AM... or it could be 10 PM when I start a movie. I'm also a night owl, so I realize starting a movie at or past 1 AM can sound crazy. There are days though that if I don't have anything to do in particular, I'll just get up and feel like watching movies all day. Watching movies at home I may have snacks or make popcorn, but I don't have a specific routine. And for where I watch movies, usually it's just me so I'll be in my room. Or if I have a friend over we'll probably watch stuff in my room. But if I'm watching something with another person, (and if my brother is not on it,) we might watch it downstairs on the big screen- we have a projector. If I'm watching something with my younger brother, we'll definitely watch it on the big screen! That's also where the region free player is hooked up, though, so if I want to watch a film that I have a non-region A/1 release of, that's where I'll watch it.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 5 lety +1

      My dear friend Bailee, I love your comments as always! And I am very very jealous that your house has a projector set up as well! That is fantastic! I wonder if there are any special films that you like to watch in particular on a projector rather than on a TV screen?

    • @BaileeWalsh
      @BaileeWalsh Před 5 lety +1

      I used to prefer watching stuff on the projector, but I actually prefer using the TV in my room. I like the seclusion and privacy, and I don't have to worry about the volume being too loud if I'm watching something when it's late and my parents are asleep.
      There are times when I'll want to watching something on the big screen. What I can think of are the more immersive films- ones that have a setting that's very much a part of the story. Those of the fantasy genre come to mind. And some shows and movies I almost associate with the big screen because maybe when I watched them for the first time, I was there and not in my room- with this the show Penny Dreadful comes to mind. Most recently what I've wanted to watch specifically using the projector are a couple EXO concert DVDs, lol!! In case you need a reminder- you probably don't- EXO is my favorite kpop group :)
      Yeah, but when I was younger I preferred the projector. It also helped that the houses I've lived in before this one, the room the projector was in was more off to the side of the house, or like in a smaller space. Whereas now, it's in one of the main rooms of the house, and it's an open area. Like, it's not really a room, it's an area.

    I don't have that many rituals, the time of the day doesn't matter to me that much, I never watch anything in the morning, but that's because I've a weird sleeping schedule. Of course my mood affects, what kind of film I want to watch, if I have lots of assignments at the university, I don't wanna watch anything too serious or long. The length in general matters for example, if I've bought a film on blu-ray, and the film is over 3 hours long, it might take a while for me to watch it. I've had the Human Condition trilogy for 4 months now, but I still haven't watched it. When it comes to the movie theater, I never leave my seat, I wanna see the whole film from start to finish, because I paid for it, and in general I can concentrate much better when I see a film at a movie theater than at home, and due to that I've noticed that my memory is much better on films that I've seen in the cinema than with the films that I see at home even if the film is tediously boring. I never use my phone at a movie theater as I find it very disrespectful, and it's annoying if I see other people doing so, and I'm also always punctual, I hate when people come late, and it happens in London every time. I love going to the movie theater as much as I can, if I had more money I would go every week probably, today I saw Koreeda's After Life, and on Saturday I'll see A Clockwork Orange, which is just amazing. I see new releases too quite often in the cinemas, I try to watch most of the critically acclaimed films at the movie theater. Lastly, I can sympathise with you about not having the best setup, I don't have a TV at all, I watch films with my laptop(this is the worst thing that can happen to a cinephile haha), but I'm planning to get a big TV after I graduate, and in Finland I had a decent TV, but can't afford it now as a student and I don't have space either so...

      Thank you!!! Yes, I didn't mention it in the video, but I don't stay up late every night! I think that would be bad for my body. But I usually try to sleep for longer hours on the following weeknight or the like, which is good. You are really right.
      As for weekends, I think that while I would love to have a movie marathon, realistically it is difficult because I spend much of the waking hours with the family and my kids.
      As for your approach, your approach is wonderful. I love it! "let the movie sink into your blood." YES!!!! Lovely!!

    Well when I was younger and unemployed, I devoted my time to cinema as a means of being creatively productive. It was a way to push myself to learn and understand the world at a much deeper level, in the process managing to find meaning in the various elements of my life. At the start of this, I watched about 4-5 films a day (and finding time to write reviews on them). Ever since I started working, that number has dropped down to just maybe 1 a day, or if I am lucky maybe 2, and still write a review on it. Sometimes, due to the nature of my work, I find it difficult to watch a film and not find myself nodding off due to the physically draining nature of my job. I wish I still had the energy that I used to have, but knowing that I have other responsibilities now, I know I had to sacrifice some of that time.

      Dear Brett, I really want to thank you for such a lovely and thoughtful comment. This is something that I can relate to. Your love for cinema is great, and in particular I love how you identify here one of the great things about cinema--namely, the way in which it can help us to find meaning in our own lives. And I totally understand your comment about not having as much time now as you once did. Still, I think that there is no rush with cinema and so even if it one film in a week or in a month, it still gives us time to think and ponder and wonder about the film and what it means to us. Your comment has helped me to remember this, and so I really want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for reminding me of this important thing. You have done me a big favor here. Cheers to you from Tokyo.
      By the way, may I ask, during your time when you were watching 4 or 5 films a day, what would you say was your most intense viewing day in terms of the films that you saw?

      Daisuke Beppu according to my Letterboxd diary, November 2014 I watched Scanners, Videodrome, Blow Out, and Eraserhead
      Definitely an intense day
      Or on the 12th of December in 2014 I watched Jarhead, The Gold Rush, Funny Face, The Wolf of Wall Street, and The Purge

    Hi Daisuke! I love your videos and will always watch whenever a new one comes out. I actually saw a very interesting film earlier today and I’m curious to know if you’ve seen it or not. It’s called symbiopsychotaxiplasm, it’s a very interesting experimental film, and it has a Criterion release as well.

      AND, OH YES... SYMBIOPSYCHOTAXIPLASM!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THIS!!!!!!! The Criterion DVD is great because it has the original, and the "sequel"!!!! Take One and Take 2 1/2. You know, last year, I did a series called "5XCriterion", and in one of those videos, I spoke about Symbiopsychotaxiplasm. It is one of those really interesting films, very experimental and much deeper than meets the eye I dare say. Oh my gosh, I am so happy that you mention this film!!!!!!!!! William Greaves is so well spoken and really engaging as a speaker, and he is so fascinating as a filmmaker.
      OH MY GOODNESS, you have certainly made my day!!!!! Thank you!!!!!

    Hello my friend, how are you doing?
    I work at night, so I usually only watch movies on my days off, like yourself I usually watch them late at night, and so, I have to wear headphones, I would prefer not to wear them, but that way I can have it nice and loud, which tends to be more immersive.
    Take care.

    Can relate to what you said about only watching later in the day, I tend to think of movies as a night time activity, watching a movie during the day just isn't the same! During the week I have school so I tend to mostly watch movies on fridays and saturdays, so during the week I'll plan ahead what movies I'll watch, usually creating a mini film festival of three or so films based on a genre, director, actor, etc. I also take a nap on fridays so I can stay up late, I tend to get extremely distracted and annoyed by noise when I'm watching a movie so I like to wait until everyone in the house is asleep! I was kind of wondering if you have any special snack or drink that you always must have whenever you watch movies? Here in Sweden we have a certain bag of candy that I always get on fridays and I've considered tea to be the best beverage to watch a movie with! (Beer tends to go well with b-movies and exploitation movies...)

    Hi Daisuke. Do you have a `system` regarding what movies you choose to watch? Do you have like a `Criterion night` or a horror night? Or do you make your choices depending on mood? I try to cover a wide range of genres when watching films so I have horror night on Fridays, foreign films on Mondays, TV Series on Tuesdays, opera night on Sundays... By the way, do you like to watch TV Series, do you have any favorites? Do you like opera or collect opera on bluray?

    A few questions I'd like to ask, and forgive me if someone has already asked, what are your thoughts on 4k blu-rays and the new 4k tvs? I've been thinking of getting a nicer tv. Recently a friend of mine bouht an oled hd tv and has had nothing but praise. But I noticed that The Criterion Collection has not offered any releases in 4k. Do you have any opinions on this or the re-release of 4k films, or 4k in general? If this is somehing you'd like to discuss in a video (if you haven't already) that would be great!

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 4 lety

      I was actually thinking about purchasing a new 4K tv, before this whole world crisis hit. At the moment my family is not making any large purchases but instead for now we are trying to save money (just in case we need considering the potential economic impact of this crisis). But if things settle down then perhaps we might one day purchase a new TV. And yes, at the moment, I am not too much a collector of UHD releases, and so I cannot say. However, if this is the trend of the market, then I can see other labels like Criterion following. But then again it is difficult for me to predict.

    Dear Daisuke, thank you for this very interesting video about your ritual habits. I’m impressed you can sleep so little! I’m like you, beginning watching my Criterion films after my kid went to sleep, sometimes around 11. I don’t have a 4K TV, neither big sound set up, but i enjoy watching the films with my Bose headset, so I can fully immerse myself into the film, without playing on the sound volume because of the neighbors! I tend to watch 2 films/week, the other days are for the extra features. I have a question about your job. Maybe you answered it already, so in this case, I’m sorry. I just wanted to know if you’re in the movie business, or movie critics, and if you watch so many films because of your job, or just for pleasure? Thank you!

      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello again and thank you so much. Oh and I will have a video uploaded later today that by coincidence I think addresses your question. But to answer briefly here, no, I am not at all associated with the film industry, and I am not a professional film critic or reviewer at all. I have been watching films since I was young, though.

  • @trach1
    @trach1 Před 3 lety

    If it's the first time watching a movie then it will be at night. Lights off so I can focus on the film. During the day it will only be films I've seen many times since I can be easily distracted.
    Going to a theater then popcorn is a must! When I was young I had to have a Sprite with it. In the rare occasion I went with chocolate it was usually Goobers, Raisinets or Sno-Caps and in that case I always had a Coke. It was always a very calculated decision! For quieter films it was usually chocolate since it was less noisy. Now I just want the popcorn!

      Hello mauricio v, and great question. So, yes, sometimes (not always though) I do take notes with a paper and pencil. Usually it might be something like a line of dialogue or a character name, or maybe something that comes up that I am not aware of and so I will note it down so that I can research it later. And other things like that. How about you?
