  • Thank you very much to all who participated! I received 178 submissions overall.
Here is the initial video video from back in early October where I talk about the results of the viewer poll ( • Question to Viewers: W... ).
Please note that this is actually a "top 49 list of 58 titles", because of certain titles being tied for the same spot. So, the overall total of films is 58, but the list itself is broken down into top 49. For purposes of ease of titling this video, please note I have titled it "Top 50".
Also, the complete list will be made available in future videos, and so please stay tuned to this channel for more updates on that, if you are interested.
Thank you so much again. Please accept my apologies if there are any mistakes or errors. Please note though that I did my very best with this and I hope you enjoy the results.
Also, please note that I fully understand that this is not necessarily a "scientific" or "definitive" list, and that lists change depending on the number of participants and who is participating, etc. Therefore, if I were to conduct another poll like this in the future, I think the possibility exists that it could change. In any case, my friends, please feel free to participate next time, as I hope to make this open to as many people as possible.
The time breakdown is set forth immediately below in a "non spoiler" form, in case you want to enjoy the video and not be spoiled.
(However, the "top 50" list will be provided at the very end of this description box, so please scroll down further below for the actual written list.)

@@DaisukeBeppu That is great to hear Daisuke! And yes i am very good too thank you. I am still digesting the Irishman. I watched it on Sunday and was BLOWN AWAY. It really is one of the most pleasing releases of the century. With a decade of many disappointments, the Irishman stands tall as one that was as good as i hoped it to be.

Hello Daisuke, thank you for creating and presenting this poll. These are all great works of cinema, and I recall struggling when I put mine together for submission. However, I have been collecting Criterion Collection dvd's and blu rays since 1999, and in my mind, never ever throughout all these years has a film been more associated with the label than Seven Samurai. When someone mentions Criterion films, it is always the first one that comes to my mind. Anyways, as always, thank you for another great video my friend!

Thank you Daisuke for creating and curating this very interesting poll!
As a UK viewer, many of the titles don't specifically relate to their Criterion Collection edition, but a lot do have their counterparts in the UK, via labels like MoC and Arrow! It's always good to have a list to refer to, to see which film I should watch in my collection, as I work through it!
And of course, I'm very pleased that Stalker got as high as it did, as it's my favourite film (at the moment) - The lack of Antonioni feels a little disappointing too!

I’m so glad that Barry Lyndon made it so high on the list. I honestly feel that this masterpiece doesn’t receive as much recognition and love as it deserves, and it is my favourite Kubrick film (and this statement isn’t easy to make especially when you look at his filmography).

Daisuke Beppu I could not have said it better myself. It is an extremely powerful experience. It is a trip to the past, yet it showcases a social milieu that ultimately mirrors our own, be it in its division of society into different classes and in the sadly unjust and certainly unequal distribution of power. Not to mention that it is a beautiful portrait of our flawed nature. I could go on forever about this film, as it ranks very high on my list of favourites, but, anyway, I hope you are staying safe and doing great. Thanks for your amazing content, which is of great help during those hard times.

There’s also a lot I feel are missing from here that I’m surprised by. There’s nothing by Bunuel, for example. There’s also a lot of my favorites not on here, with Female Trouble, The Piano Teacher, Rushmore, The Squid and the Whale, Antichrist, and Salo. The last two I understand missing as they’re ones that elicit strong opinions and that I can understand people not liking, but the complete lack of Wes Anderson makes me sad since he’s one of my favorites. I also don’t know how Do the Right Thing is missing from the list, it’s probably my favorite Criterion release overall, and one of my favorite films easily. The ending is fantastic.

It was great talking to you live; I hope I wasn't too bothersome, with the exception of my grammar mistakes. My only problem with livestreams is that I don't know how often I should write in order not be annoying or hijacking the conversation. Regarding the poll, the one release I was expecting to be in the top 50( I didn't vote it for that reason) was The Apu Trilogy. The only film that I cannot stand from this top 50 is Tree of Life (Days of Heaven is about thousand times better). I find it pretty interesting that there no westerns or films directed by women on the list, don't you think? Finally, are you planning on buying the Ozu Box set from Carlotta Films; I am tempted although my French are pretty rusty.

  • @Stealthborn

Lots of great choices! I can see that 7 of the 10 I voted for made it in the top 50:
    49. Princess Bride
    33. M
    33. Wages of Fear
    24. Pan's Labyrinth (had chosen the trilogy but this TECHNICALLY counts)
    8. The Third Man
    7. Paris, Texas
    1. Seven Samurai
The other 3 I chose (Umberto D., The Virgin Spring and Mona Lisa) are certainly films that are a little out of popular opinion (though The Virgin Spring could be consider a part of the Bergman Box Set at #6 so very loosely I chose an 8th one).
I can say that some time has passed since I voted and although I accept my choices I have a few regrets about films I didn't choose like 12 Angry Men, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters and especially Picnic at Hanging Rock. But that;s the thing with a top 10 list. You have to leave certain things off though if I were to do another poll like this again things would be slightly different. But it was a fun poll!

Thank you very much. I think that it has been rumored for some time that Wong Kar-wai films will emerge in physical media releases in the Criterion Collection, including the possible return of Chungking Express. If these rumors are true, then hopefully this film will return to the collection again as a nice blu ray. Let us keep our fingers crossed! I hope you are well.

All 4 David Lynch films that are on Criterion are here. Wow, we love some David Lynch!
I'm very curious as to how many titles were chosen ultimately because of your videos. It's not like I'll be able to determine an actual answer, but I'm sure there are a number of people who watched films for the first time because of your film club or your videos in general, which was very likely to influence how enjoyable or good a film is for people.

My friend, I too noticed that about the Lynch films! It's amazing. Yes, in terms of filmmakers represented as well, there are four Kurosawa films here. And I suppose that if we count the Bergman box set, in a way all of his films that are in the Criterion Collection made it into the top 10, from a certain way of looking at things.

Late to party so please let me throw in my number one pick, not just for Criterion, but my personal all time movie, period, and it happens to be in Criterion I see. The Graduate, 1967. IMO it is the best movie I have ever seen. It has everything: Great acting, great screenplay, great music, it's a great comedy and at same time a great drama. It has the best beginning, best middle, best ending. It's just the greatest:) And btw, this is a great list, thank you and thanks to all submitters, I have copied and will definitely use.

Many picks are what I expected, but there are surprises there as well like A Brighter Summer Day. Only film I don't like on the list is Dazed & Confused, but other than that I love most of the films here. I'm so glad that Harakiri made it! And DAVID LYNCH, don't drink all the Coke, Daisuke!

The only one that made it from my list is Persona. I think it's a top 50 with a lot of great films. Many of the films tied for number 33 were dark films haha. I'm surprised there weren't a lot of French films. La Haine, Wages of Fear and The Passion of Joan of Arc. Not a French New Wave film in sight. Some of my favorite directors didn't appear (my favorite is Godard) like Tati or Altman. But for my taste and as a representation of The Criterion Collection I think the list is really nice. I'm happy Seven Samurai is number one. I think it is a film that everyone can get behind.
