    This is a wonderful resource when it comes to figuring out OOP titles for Criterion. I have several of these OOP titles already but I am trying to get more. One recent Criterion that went OOP that I discovered during the Barnes & Noble Criterion sale was The Confession (Spine #759) by Costa-Gavras. By pure chance I found the DVD version of it hiding among the piles of Criterions in the sale. I know it isn't the Blu-Ray but I consider myself lucky to have found it.

      Thank you, Stealthborn. Oh yes, THE CONFESSION! That was a very recent piece of news, and it came as a bit of a surprise and shock to me.
      Yes, you are indeed lucky to have gotten that DVD when you did! I am happy for you! I think the price of the title is quite high on eBay, etc. So congratulations!

    I remember seeing Alexander Nevsky as a child on tv one Saturday night with my dad. It made an amazing impression on me. I never forgot that film and was so happy to get it when it first was released by Criterion. It, along with the rest of the Eisenstein box is one of my most treasured Criterions and even though I own the dvd box I would be there on day one to buy a blu ray release! Thanks for another great informative video.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 6 lety

      I love this comment, because it reminds me just how both wonderful and forceful these Eisenstein sound films are , and why he is such a historically important filmmaker. Alexander Nevsky is a real gem, and you are right to laud it as such. The CC box release is lovely, especially considering that this was still in the early days of the CC DVD collection, relatively speaking. Now you are so totally making me curious about what your favorite films are! Thank you for your wonderful comment, my friend, K S. Best regards.

    Hi daisuke. Letting u know I watch your videos all the time about criterions. Like I said I have about 150. Not as many as u. Hope someday. Some titles just allude me. But I have got real lucky lately. At a goodwill thrift store. I picked up for $1.99 each. I got hamlet, w c fields 6 short films, the original release of naked lunch, the original release of notorious by hitchcock, the best one was spellbound by Hitchcock. Then the best deal. The next day went to a yard sale. And guy had a table of dvds. He wanted one dollar each. I got the lady eve. Seven samurai with restoration demonstration. Robocop. Sullivan's travels the original. And a couple others. But the best one that I screamed about. Was for one dollar and it was real. It was hard boiled. Was shocked when I seen it. So that made my week. Especially getting spellbound and hard boiled for basically $1.50 each and the other oop titles as well and also got the keno release of birth of a nation.

      So, yes, thank you for this. This is an old video now, and I think I need to make an updated one because I have made a few more adjustments to my OOPs, including the Chasing Amy release with the booklet. As for your comment, yes, it is funny indeed. Yet there are others like The Third Man or Last Year at Marienbad or The Man Who Fell To Earth that are available elsewhere but that still command high prices on the used market.

    You're providing a wonderful service by highlighting the OOP titles. I own a good many of them, thankfully, though I'm very surprised by several of the titles. The Chasing Amy disc must have JUST gone OOP because I saw a copy of it last night at Barnes and Noble. I'd be lying if I said I were sorry to see the Eric Rohmer box set go, however. His films are so frustrating to me that I honestly cannot stand any of his work. Gene Hackman once said in Night Moves that watching a Rohmer film is tantamount to watching paint dry. I think he was being far too generous in his estimation. I rarely highlight my disdain for a particular movie or director because, oftentimes, I can understand how someone else might think differently. Not so with Rohmer. Apologies for the mini-rant, but seeing the box set dredged up some bad memories haha! BUT... your dedication to the Collection is remarkable and you're doing a service to collectors everywhere on CZcams! Thank you!!

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 6 lety +1

      According to the Criterion Collection website that I have just now checked just in case, CHASING AMY is indicated as "Out of Print". Therefore, if you find it in the wild like that and you are into getting your hands on an OOP title, I recommend getting it, especially because I don't think it is so expensive, especially if you find it at a B&N!
      As for the Rohmer box set, I admit that when I first saw the films I found them to be rather dull if I am brutally honest. But I put them to the side and about a year later I revisited them, and it was amazing. It is really funny how films can change just with the passage of time, is it not? But, I am very fine with your rant, because it makes me try to think how I really feel about the works. So, if you need to rant some more, you just let me know, my friend.

      @stevevincentfurness4537 Před 6 lety

      Thanks, buddy! And you're correct: time will often affect how I see and judge a film. But just between you and me, I'm going to allow about 20 more years to elapse before I attempt to watch a Rohmer film again! I may pick up the Chasing Amy DVD when I invariably go back for more 50% off goodness. I own the DVD but maybe I can flip the new copy on ebay. :)

    Nice collection! Just to point out your Chasing Amy is missing the booklet. But thanks so much for displaying them all as you did. I have most as well, but Nights Of Cabria and Tokyo Olympiad are really elusive for me still. My boon was snagging them when Filmstruck was announced, and so many in Toronto unloaded their collections. Now Filmstruck is ending, and you and I are very lucky! Also the 3rd Man Blu-ray I see being sold for $200cdn still, and the unopened Two Of Us DVD is $100. And with reissues, it's always a gamble. Keep up the great work and collection!

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 5 lety +1

      Oh gosh, I love this comment so much! And you are so sharp to notice that no-booklet issue with CHASING AMY! Well done!
      You know it is interesting. I didn't realize it until after I uploaded the video, but in the video I show the version that was made with a Canadian rating on the back. So the layout is slightly different than the US release of the film, and also there is no booklet. I have since acquired a US release copy (with the booklet), and so one day, if I ever do an updated video, I should be sure to use such copy. But you are so brilliant for catching that detail!!
      As for your other comments, you know, yes, the OOP market is a rough one sometimes, and so it is a gamble too regarding the possibility of reissues. You know also that the issue of bootlegs is still a major problem, and this is an issue that makes me so mad sometimes. So we really have to be very careful when dealing with OOP titles. But still, if one can be found at a good price, then it is worth the gamble sometimes. If ever you want to talk more about OOPs, please let me know. I am far from being an expert, but I have gone through my share of successes and failures and so I am happy to share my experiences to the extent I am able.
      Best of luck to you!

    • @DungeonStudio
      @DungeonStudio Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks Daisuke, and glad you got a better copy now. Another thing I should point out to you and others here is be careful with sites like Amazon. I noticed with Nights Of Cabria they'll show a expensive copy. A 2nd hand seller may have it cheaper, but then their shipping fee is enormous! One even comes up for $8, but it's cover is not even Criterion. I much rather buy where I can inspect them before purchase. Thank goodness for credit cards, as I always have the least money on me when I find the best deal. LOL All the best! :-)

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 5 lety +1

      @@DungeonStudio, you know, this is such a great point. I too have had to be careful in the past with Amazon third party sellers. I always contact a seller beforehand and ask for specific pictures of the item and the back of the disc and numbers, etc. And yes, there can be some odd issues regarding expensive shipping fees for items that shouldn't necessarily generate such fees ordinarily. But at the same time, I have also had many great and successful transactions on Amazon's third party marketplace. I suppose it really depends on the trustworthiness of the seller.

    • @DungeonStudio
      @DungeonStudio Před 5 lety +1

      Another thing I recently discovered, and you may already know - criterionforum.org Much to my heartbreak, they claim MGM and Handmade Film titles will be getting reissued soon. Such as RoboCop, Spinal Tap, How Get Ahead In Advertising, etc. I was thinking my great finds were from people cleaning house for the Film Struck channel. But the contention seems to be Criterion will be doing Blu-ray reissues soon of many of them. Nice in one way for the movie and Blu-ray fans. But for collectors like ourselves, dang it! LOL Me personally, I like DVDs the best still. Great picture, easy to navigate, and just feel more worthy to have two or more discs incl. Blu-ray looks odd and cheap in my collection, and that they cost more with little difference really gets me. Anyhow, keep on the hunt my friend! :-)

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 5 lety

      @@DungeonStudio I think this news (if it comes true) won't necessarily be bad for collectors like you and me, though. I am not sure as to your specific approach, but I am a collector that tries to get the old DVD releases as well. So if, say, Robocop is released in a new blu, I will still hold on to my DVD (and laserdiscs too for that matter). The same is true for the other titles you referred to.
      And yes, many people feel the same way you do about DVDs! Heck, many people have that feeling towards the laserdiscs! So in all it is still a prime time to be a collector, even with all these reissues that are happening or are rumored to happen.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 6 lety +1

      I hope so too, regarding the Eisenstein box. Criterion forums and online discussions tend to point to a general possibility that the reason why this fell OOP is because CC is planning a rerelease. 10:00 That cut-out indicates that the case is from a later printing of the title. It was used by the industry (I'm guessing) in the late 2000s to indicate its support for recycling, that is, using less plastic to make the case. Even though the cut-out could be confused for Criterion's revolving "wacky C", it's the recycling logo. (You're likely already aware of this, Daisuke, and it was intended for your viewers.)

(Today is March 17, 2021, and just now I checked the Criterion website. According to it, the title is listed as "Currently Unavailable". This might mean that it could later fall OOP, but also we have to remember that there have been instances in the past where a title was described as being "Currently Unavailable" only to later become available. But then again, if it falls officially OOP, then the site would likely indicate "Out of Print" status. Ultimately I am not sure so if you have heard anything in terms of specific news, please let me know. Anyway, thank you very much for bringing this to my attention.) Cheers.

      Dear Grock93 Grock, thank you very much for your reply!
      So, generally speaking, Criterion first tried to release their blu rays in digipack form that were ultimately criticized for being not sturdy enough I think. So then Criterion went with the plastic cases, but still used sturdier digipacks for some releases going forward, which is the current situation now. As for which is rarer, it depends on the title. for instance, last time I checked, I think the digipack of Chungking Express blu ray was a little harder to find than the plastic case version, though I could be wrong about that as I have not checked in a long time.

    Hello Daisuke,
    A question, why do you have so many unopened double copies. These films aren't cheap. I just brought 5 criterion blu rays and it cost me £120 in UK. I can see two copies of straw dogs in the back. Do you run from a video distribution store or shop?

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 3 lety

      That is a good question. A number of copies were acquired over time (either people gave some to me or I bought them again). I don’t usually have doubles of all titles though. So I don’t do it to keep backups in principle. Also if I recall a number of these were bought during times where the prices were not high or they were still in print.

    What a trip down memory lane for me, as I owned many of these titles upon first release and sold most of them when I purged my DVD collection many years ago. Particularly miss Grand Illusion, The Long Good Friday, Le Cercle Rouge and The Man Who Fell To Earth DVDs. Had to repurchase Diary Of A Country Priest recently, as it sticks with me to this day. Did Dreyer's box set go OOP after this video?

      Hello and thank you!
      So, this video I made was some time back, and at that time the DVD was still in print I think. As for now, it looks like it is "CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE" on the Criterion website, and it does not appear to be available at the moment on amazon, etc. So this sometimes (but not always) means "OOP". If a title is OOP, then it will usually say so on the Criterion website. Still, this COULD mean it is OOP, but I am not sure.

    With all due respect, at 12:42, by coincidence? how does this happen, anyways? Possible options:
    (1) You forget that you already purchased the film, and accidentally repurchase it?
    (2) Someone sends you an additional copy. of The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie by mistake? It is a great cover design, by the way.
    (3) Maybe your wife finds a cheap, used copy somewhere NOT knowing that you already own a copy?
    (4) A friend forgets his/her copy at your house and never requests the film back?
    (5) By some synchronistic, divine intervention, you are forced to possess whatever Criterion release you encounter regardless of prior ownership.
    (6) Compulsivity?
    (7) Or the somewhat speculative but nonetheless, obvious hypothesis, that you have an insatiable desire to possess as many Criterion releases as humanly possible regardless of duplicate titles......
    (8) Collector frenzy
    (9) Obsession
    (10) Logically, buying multiple copies to reserve for future use and/or backup.
    (11) Financial investment

      birddogfreemann yes. And no need to be snappy. I think it is your style of writing but sometime I admit it sounds like you are being a bit too over critical. Still, it is my pleasure to talk to you, but I just ask for a small addition of courtesy in your comments, otherwise it will be difficult for me to reply to you in the future. Let me add that I have been nothing but patient and courteous to your comments thus far, but please understand that it is very difficult for me to engage in conversation if I sense snark in any comments from viewers because my time is unfortunately much too limited to engage in such conversation. I do not have any hate for your comments though, and so please feel free to post comments if you like, but once again I will not engage if I sense it to be something that I do not feel like engaging with. Your understand would be greatly appreciated.
      Best regards my friend, and I hope you are well.

      If you don't want to answer a genuine question regarding collecting, please don't. And what is wrong with being critical, anyways? If you want to maintain a superficial, polite, dignified relationship, that is your choice. I understand your time is limited, and if it hasn't become too difficult to respond to all comments already, it will. So, I do not expect you to respond to my comments nor is it necessary. I know there are limitations.
      I noticed (what I thought to be) an interesting aspect of your collecting, and I thought I would inquire about such coincidences. There is no need to get defensive. In this case, I do not believe in coincidence. And I think the topic would be interesting to explore.
      After watching your The Room video, you expressed laughter, a new dimension to your public personality and image. After noticing the comment about collecting duplicates (as coincidence), I thought I would offer an interpretive understanding while giving you an opportunity to expand on your conclusion. Yes, there was humor involved, this is part of human nature.
      Yes, you have been patient and courteous. I have devoted much time to supporting your video performance, watching your videos, supplying thoughtful comments. I don't think you have expressed publicly your motivation behind these videos, but along with some humorous moments, my aim is to help you indirectly, improve your format while expressing some personal viewpoints. If I am critical, please take it constructively. I understand how difficult your work is, how serious you take it. I apologize if you do not like being challenged.
      Snappy and snark falsely characterize who I am as a viewer of your channel. Please know if you regard me as a friend, I intend to support you in all your creative endeavors in the way that I am. Maybe at some point, you might elucidate your actual motivations for creating a youtube channel.
      And lastly, I sincerely apologize if I offended you in any way. With you, this is not my intention.

      birddogfreemann no problem at all. I sense your absolute genuineness here. Thank you very much. And I think sometimes what can happen here is that the written word may seem less “human” than was actually intended.
      And you are right: there is nothing at all wrong with criticism. But I am never above it, so please criticize away. But if you critique with a hand extended out, I will gladly shake it and converse.
      So let us bury the hatchet and be well my friend.
      Please note that yes it is coincidental and not part of any grand scheme on my part. I am honestly forgetful sometimes with my ordering and so sometimes I order something that I have ordered previously. This is primarily also because orders take many weeks sometimes and I have also lost track in my mind in the past about orders. So i am not at all compulsively trying to collect every single copy ever created. I don’t also compulsively collect pristine copies or the like. As I mentioned before I don’t handle my copies with white gloves or anything. I am happy even when boxes are dented or creased. It is fine with me . Cheers and thank you for your sincere follow up.
      Let me extend to you my virtual hand for a warm hand shake.

      Also, I don't want to delegitimize your observations. I think they are valid. If, in an attempt to be humorous and critical at the same time, and I make a sardonic comment, it is an effort to lessen the tension an individual may feel self-reflectively. I enjoy laughing at myself, and I want others to do the same, as therapy.
      I am seeking to change the negative attributes of my character. I think I can grow psychologically and intellectually as well. I just hope others are also receptive to such ideas. I need to be more conscious of others and their sensitivity levels. I think if we can interject humor into our self-analysis, we can develop a more full appreciation of our human nature.
