    I have been a collector of Criterions since 1998 (though not a completist) and I have searched for a channel like yours for years and am thrilled to have found it. I really appreciate the fact that you have actually seen most if not all the films you talk about. Most collectors on youtube never watch the films (some never even open them) and end up giving reviews simply by reading the back of the Criterion case, then put them back on the shelf to collect dust. This is very frustrating as I am picky as to which I choose to buy, and I look for strong recommendations. Now, with your channel, I have finally found THE place to get the information I need on potential future purchases! This is now my favourite channel... thank you so much for your videos.

      Dear K S, hello again!
      Thank you so much for this very kind and considerate comment that you made. I am so thrilled, especially because you are obviously a Criterion collector and expert. It really means a lot.
      I apologize for my lack of organization with my channel at the moment, because I have only just been active for the past couple months... I am only now beginning to find "my style" so to speak. I will try not to let you and other fellow Criterion fans down.
      By the way, may I ask, what are some of your favorite films, Criterion or otherwise? I would love to know.
      (Also, if you are on Facebook, please feel free to connect with me there as well.)
      I should say to that I have seen most of the CC films, but I am far from being able to talk about all of them, but that is what is so great about Criterion... one can watch and then learn so much more.... Keep watching great cinema.
      Best regards. --Daisuke

    The Eclispe series is a really great way to get a lot of films for very cheap. But I cant help but feeling that many will get Blu-ray releases in the coming years. Film restoration technology has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 10 years that films thought to be un-salvageable then, could now be seen in a new light. Especially stuff from Bergman, Kurosawa, Ozu, Kobayashi, etc. Whether its by Criterion themselves, Eureka, BFI, Kino, Toho, etc... Only time will tell
    Great video, thank you!

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 6 lety +4

      It may be blu ray, or, perhaps, they will all be made available on streaming services. I don't have FilmStruck, but I gather that many of the Eclipse films are already available there, and there are even more films made available as well....

    • @RareDivers
      @RareDivers Před 6 lety +1

      Interesting, i've heard about good things about that site, but I am not much of a streamer. I prefer physical versions, but it is a cheap way to tray different films without dropping $30 or so on a disc.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 6 lety +2

      Yes, you and I seem to be of the same mindset. I have always been a physical media guy myself. However, if streaming becomes more prevalent here in Japan (which it already is), then I might have to "take the plunge". However, FilmStruck is not officially available in Japan, and so I use that as my reason not to pursue getting any streaming service subscription.
      But the FilmStruck streaming service appears to be extremely worth it, not least of which because of the great wealth of films that are available (much more so than the number of titles available on Criterion physical media, as well as a number of titles that are not available at all in physical medium form.)

      Thank you very much, Bruce Wayne. That is a fabulous idea. Let me figure out some review materials. Please forgive me if it takes me a while.
      To answer your question now, though, just in case you are able to access the Barnes & Noble sale, those sets are really very different and each is really fascinating. I love all of them, but if I had to pick only one... I would give the slight edge to the Nikkatsu Noir set. But that is my opinion and I am sure others will disagree with me.

    Thanks for this great video which I`ve just very belatedly come across. I agree that Eclipse was an excellent label which has sadly disappeared,probably for economic reasons. I have a few but want to buy more now. I note that many of the releases featured the the great Japanese directors especially Ozu from his silent films to the late color films.I wish the more neglected Naruse had more titles available although my favorite is the set by Shimizu,in particular Mr. Arigato ,a very early example of the road movie eighty years before Drive My Car!

    I'd be really interested in hearing your thoughts on Aki Kaurismäki, because I'm Finnish and I always enjoy hearing people's opinions on Finnish films as there are not too many that have got international success. By the way it's pretty interesting how Japanese and Finnish people pronounce words really similarly like you pronounced Kaurismäki's name almost like a Finn and when you pronounce Japanese words, I would pronounce them fairly similarly if I were to say/read them.

      I adore Aki Kaurismaki's work, at least that which I have seen, which are those titles that are available through the Criterion Collection.
      Are there any films in particular by Kaurismaki that you think are especially worth of praise?

      If you want to know how to pronounce his name correctly you could watch this video, where he talks about Ozu czcams.com/video/7ZPpnd4hTVw/video.html. Maybe I'll do a video about him sometime. I have only seen 6 of his films: Shadows in Paradise, Ariel, The Match Factory Girl, Le Havre, The Other Side of Hope and I Hired a Contract Killer. My favorites so far have to be Shadows in Paradise, Ariel and The Other Side of Hope. Those 3 that I mentioned are the funniest, I really enjoy Kaurismäki's dry humor.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 6 lety +2

      Thank you for your comment! Oh my, it is one of the best sets Criterion ever put out, not to mention the fact that it is perhaps in the top 3 best ever Eclipse sets. I admit to not being expert in Czech cinema, but I knew of Daisies. so I bought the set for Daisies. however, it became clear to me that the set is Daisies, and then the other films are just as compelling. So for me, it was a case of "Come for Daisies, and stay for the Joke and Capricious Summer, Etc." These are brilliant and deep. Pearls of the Deep, my goodness... and Report on the Party and Guests, so biting... and Return of the Prodigal Son, so full of impact, Capricious Summer being so delightful ,and the Joke--a masterpiece. And then there is Daisies... the great, funny, sly, sexy, satirical, and oh so bold and shocking, one of the great marvels.
      So, in a nutshell, yes, I love the set. It is SOOOOOO worth it.
      Thank you Nicholas. If you have a moment, I would love to hear what other film favorites or recommendations you have! Best regards.
