    I'm not committing hyperbole when I write, I'm on the edge of my seat watching these videos. Holy cow, I've never even HEARD of some of these titles. Once again, props for your collection, and your determination to make it complete. There's so much I want to comment and say, but it's late and my words are starting to fail me. I'm going to make Daisuke t-shirts because I'm such a fan of your videos! My family knows your name well by now!!

      The spine number titles before 500 are mainly occupied by DVD only titles, though the number of DVD-only titles is slowly going down. there are some great ones here, my friend. You have a region free/DVD zone free player, right?

    • @VulgarianTroglodyte
      @VulgarianTroglodyte Před 6 lety +1

      Actually I don't have a region free player(I only have region b player), that's why I complained on an earlier comment about the fact that there are so few region b criterions.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 6 lety +1

      I see... got it... And so that is why you were speaking about the UK Criterion releases. Now I understand! I am sorry for not realizing that and thank you for your clarification. So, I am not up to speed about the UK Criterion releases, but I understand that there are not so many. Right? Would you ever consider getting a region free player?

    • @VulgarianTroglodyte
      @VulgarianTroglodyte Před 6 lety +1

      There are 68 UK Criterions at the moment(including the ones that have been announced), they usually release 2 every month. I'm still grateful that we even get some Criterions here, and many Criterion titles can be found on Masters of Cinema, Artificial Eye, Studiocanal, Arrow and even on standard blu-rays. My next blu-ray player will definitely be region free, let's say my player broke today, then I would buy a region free player immediately.

      Yes, given your wide-ranging tastes in cinema, and also given that you are a collector, it might be a good idea! But as you say, the discs and labels that are available in your neck of the woods are really impressive.

  • @douglasfreer
    @douglasfreer Před 4 lety +9

    You know it annoys me that on some of the boxes they waste a number that’s just for the box itself. Now when they include something additional like a book or a supplement disc it doesn’t annoy as much.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 4 lety +1

      Hello Douglas and thank you so much for your comment. Oh yes, I too have similar feelings about the use of numbering for a box itself, but it is something that I have gotten used to I think.

    • @douglasfreer
      @douglasfreer Před 4 lety

      Daisuke Beppu yeah, I also find it weird how some multi film sets are numbered as well. There would be double features and one could have a number for both but another would have only one. Same with the boxes where one could have one number for the entire set, like the Godzilla Showa set, but then you have others where everything has its own number.
      I haven’t even gotten a Criterion but I just finished looking through all 1000 spines to see which ones I’d do and that was something I noticed immediately. The worst part about some of the sets is there might’ve been 1 or 2 titles that sounded up my alley but I didn’t want to buy a 6 film set just for 1 of them. Some do offer solo releases but not all of them do so I had to go ahead and leave those films off my list because I made it a rule that I would only pick a set if I liked a majority of the titles in it, using Godzilla as an example I’m not that interested in the US cuts but I enjoy Gojira so the original Japanese versions won it for me.
      Already got a top 10 of which films I want to do first that are a good combination of domestic, foreign and sets along with a healthy dose of Japanese features since I love Japanese cinema.

      @@DaisukeBeppu I live in a country where Criterion does not ship to/have a store. So, when I bought it, I gave one of my family member’s address (who lives in the US). So I am yet to receive my Tati box set. I am so very eager to receive it.
      I don’t have any other Criterion titles (other than The Irishman - UK import). But there are few criterion titles that I have downloaded which love and cherish - 8 1/2, Wild Strawberries, Vittorio de Sica’s Umberto D. and Bicycle Thieves, Orson Welles’ Othello, Cleo from 5 to 7 and few more.
      The Non-Criterion titles I love are - Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, Children of Heaven, King of Comedy, The Band’s Visit and many more.

    I've heard very good things about The Spirit Of The Beehive. There appears to be a Spanish Blu-ray of it. Worth tracking down!
    Its unfortunate the Blu-ray of Vampyr is almost identical to the DVD in terms of picture quality. The restoration is so old, and existing materials so degraded that not much can be done with it. A sharp reminder of how delicate film can be.
    Been sitting on the Arrow Blu-ray of The Human Condition for two years now. One day I need to just dive in. Hopefully Criterion can bring it to Blu-ray for region A, I know its a high on peoples wish lists.

    • @DaisukeBeppu

      I love THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE. I should make a video about that. It is a Criterion DVD now, and so if there is a good and better blu out there, then yes indeed it might be worth checking out.
      Oh, I have the Arrow release of THE HUMAN CONDITION. It is stunning. What a stunning presentation. However, the nature of the film is such that it is difficult for me to revisit it often. Hopefully Criterion can bring it to blu as you say. That would be great. Have you seen it?

    Could you kindly tell me if there is any difference between the dvd and blu ray dazed and confused. I already own the dvd

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 4 lety +1

      I understand that the transfers are the same. And the supplements are all the same. (The DVD is a 2 disc release, with the film and commentary and deleted scenes and trailer I think on disc 1, and then the supplements such as the documentary and the audition and the Beer Bust at the Moon Tower supplements are on disc 2. On the blu ray, they are all on one single blu ray disc.)
      Also, in general, the booklet and the poster are the same.
      And the packaging is the same.
      Except that, the size of the packaging is of course different between DVD and blu ray. Also, the DVD says "30th anniversary edition" on the back while the blu ray says "35th anniversary edition".
      Also, there are very very minor changes made in some parts of the text of the booklet.
      Also, the screen menus are different, even though the supplements are the same.
      So in terms of contents, my understanding is that they are the same, and there are few differences in appearance only as described above.

    Hi Daisuke, just discovered your channel. It’s interesting that you’re based in Japan. I love Japan not in a very weaboo kind of way, mostly I watch western vloggers living there. Anyway what’s your take on Japanese blu-ray equivalent of these Criterion releases? So far I had a couple released by IVC Tokyo and Books Kinokuniya.

      Greetings and thank you so much! As for your question, while I am not sure if there are any Japanese labels that, say, do things like spine numbering, etc., there are a lot of releases that have a great collectible factor as well. Recently I have been into TC (which released some of the Cronenberg early films with some interesting slip covers). Also, I think that King Records have been releasing a lot of ATG films on disc which is really great.
