    Just paused the video to prematurely comment about how happy I am to see another fan in LIVE LIKE A COP, DIE LIKE A MAN. Where to even start. It might be the most ridiculous film ever made in how completely devoid of morality & logic it is, but that's what makes it so damn great, haha. There is not one second that passes where your attention isn't held by something happening. That motorcycle chase at the very beginning is honestly an achievement that I am devastated doesn't get more attention (I put it right up there with the chases in THE FRENCH CONNECTION & THE GENERAL)

I had no idea about this line or these titles, and I'm now even more excited to delve into the best of the Giallo (as well as some of the other suggestions in this video. I think most of the 88 Films titles are worth buying even if you haven't seen the film before. There are some great giallos here as well, and some standard ones. I would dare say that if you had a collection of giallo films that consisted of some titles from Arrow, some from 88 Films, some from Shameless or other places, then you would potentially have a stellar giallo collection right there.

    Yes, please make another video about the side movies from 88 Films including the slasher and martial art movies. This was a great video. There are a lot of good Italian titles in this series. I have some of these movies but from other Blu-ray companies. A Blade in the dark is a classic. I'm not so much a fan of the cannibal movies mainly because of the "animal abuse" scenes. However, most of the other movies in this collection are most likely good or great depending on who you ask. Aenigma is a descent Fulci movie but not one of his best. It has a few laughable scenes in it such as the snails that kill the woman in bed. I think that movie is more for the die hard Fulci fans than the general public. Anyways, again great video. Cheers. Matt

    i am trying to understand why you like horror films....but i am understanding it through my way of looking at them, let me explain why i watch them:
    "you see i am a hardcore art film lover...so i guess horror films teach us that the real world is less scary/brutal than the horror world, so we should be happy that our lives are less haunting."
    so, Daisuke can you tell me exactly why do you like horror films? what is that element present in them that attracts you the most?
    I just finished watching The Vanishing (1988)... and it really haunted me(you know why if you have seen it)... i like such horror elements.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you very much, and I suppose I can say that (1) my like of the genre does not necessarily mean that I think that everyone must like the genre; and (2) yes, I think there is something to be said about how the "thrill" or "scare" aspect is like a substitute or a distraction from other things. I think that for me there is more I could say, but in general, that is maybe how I could describe it. However, at the same time, I never want to suggest that the genre is for everyone or should be for everyone, and I think also that cinema is vast enough that one can like many different genres at the same time.

  • @BaileeWalsh
    @BaileeWalsh Před 5 lety +1

    I'm so glad you say that having a high-brow taste in film and low-brow taste in film can co-exist; they are not mutually exclusive! Sometimes when I'm talking about significant films and throw in something that can be seen as lesser, I think people are going to come at me with comments about that thing not being good. But I enjoy it and can see it as good to an extent. It's not a masterpiece, not everything has to be brilliant and metaphorical and existential and all these adjectives that are used when discussing deeper, significant films. That's not necessarily in a video, it could be something I'm saying in a comment or a post on social media. And I'm not even limiting it to films. I love reading, and as much as classics and adult fiction and nonfiction are a part of my reading life, I love teen/YA fantasy that can be seen as cheesy and not written well, and that can be totally looked down on by over-prejudiced people. Which, to me is fine, those people can express their opinion, AS LONG AS they are being respectful about it. I've also noticed, specifically with books geared towards a teen/young adult audience, the people judging those books based on purely its audience says more about that judgment than the meaning that can and does exist in those books. It may be seen as a stretch or as reaching, but especially with discussion, so much can be said about and found in those books once you get past the surface level of the characters and plot. I also think it does a bit of a disservice to authors who are trying to write something that can be something important for their audience, even if it's just an escape. I feel like I'm going on a bit of a rant, here, and I know I can get wordy, but as a lover of a variety of books and films, it's something I've encountered a lot, whether I've actually been a part of conversations or just observed them. Oh, one more point: I definitely think something can be enjoyed and liked even if there are problems within it or with it, as long as the problems are recognized and understood. You can be a fan and be critical at the same time.
    ANYWAY, I think my brother would really be interested in some of these films. He's a big fan of Italian horror. I am as well, but he has a substantial collection so far with some Arrow and other UK/Region B releases.
    Thanks for sharing!

      Dear Bailee, thank you so much for all of your great comments lately. It has been a real pleasure to read your comments and watch your videos on your channel.
      Yes, I am firmly of the belief that interests may be varied, and therefore the same is true for one's tastes in cinema. That is not to say that I think that all people must feel the same way of course, but for me these interests in various types of films can mutually co-exist in my mind. But again, to each his or her own, and if another person feels differently about his or her own film watching, then that is also perfectly fine with me as well.
      I sense here though that you and I have the same view regarding how we each view our own film watching experiences, and so your comment is very encouraging for me to read.
      Yes, if you or your brother have any recommendations regarding any Italian horror films, please let me know!
      Best regards.

    • @BaileeWalsh
      @BaileeWalsh Před 5 lety +1

      You're welcome! And thank you for replying! I think it's easier for me sometimes to write comments because I am more able to articulate and thoroughly think about what it is I'm exactly trying to say. As well as, when I'm prompted with something, when there's something I'm responding to, I feel like I sometimes have more to say.
      You've probably seen, or are at least aware of, the Italian horror films that are our favorites. I'm a fan of Mario Bava. Black Sunday being a favorite, as well as The Girl Who Knew Too Much (aka The Evil Eye). Barbara Steele in Black Sunday is so memorable to me!
      My brother likes Dario Argento more. He would prefer Argento to Bava, though we each like both. And I also remember us both particularly liking The Beyond from Lucio Fulci.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 5 lety

      What a fantastic combination! You cover the Mario Bava ground (with some excellent choices by the way, and I am such a huge fan of BLACK SUNDAY and THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH), and your brother covers the Argento ground. And you both like THE BEYOND! What a remarkable combination. I continue to be very impressed.
      I wonder what your brother's favorite Argento films may be.

    I've only started coming to 88 Films' releases this year but I've appreciated every single release I've watched so far. 'Alice Sweet Alice' is surprisingly dramatic and meaningful (and an interesting, Paterson, NJ perspective on independent cinema). '2019: After the Fall of New York' is somehow even more enjoyable than 'Escape from New York'. 'The Mighty Peking Man' is the most fun I've had with a film this year. Some of their releases can be light on supplements but that isn't really an issue when the films are so entertaining. I avoided 88 Films for a while because they seemed pretty 'low' and exploitation - but that isn't entirely the case. Definitely need to delve deeper into their Italian Collection, Shaw Brothers titles, and specific films like 'Street Trash' and 'Beyond the Darkness' - plus they're coming out with Wes Craven's 'Swamp Thing' soon too!

    Hello dear friend. A great video as always. I love your videos. And I must admit I'm a drop in your ocean. I'm fond of Italian cinema but not a fan of horror movies because several of those I've watched are very cliched, with bad acting and dialogues but I agree that lowbrow films and highbrow films are not mutually exclusive. I just like the film to be worthy of my time. I like the kind of horror in Suspiria and Requiem for a Dream, for example. I don't know any of the films in your collection. I expected to see Suspiria or A Cannibal Holocaust. I have lots of films that I want to watch but since I'm doing my PhD in English literature, I have little time.
