    I had no idea that the Pact unleashed a searing on Orr, that's pretty mind-blowing. Interesting that the cauldron could (potentially) tap into the power of an elder dragon right in the heart of one of its rivals' territory.
    Also yes, I would LOVE for the focus to return to the orders, leaving the Pact as a sort of UN to allow the orders to co-operate directly again should the need arise.

    the thing i like most about this series, so far, is that it helps me see gw2's lore in a different light. i've always enjoyed the story in gw2 but always felt like i was missing something, when i think that gw2 has nearly 10years of writing/story telling. this fills a bit of that missing something that i've always wanted in-game. Some ideas for future random lore:
    - Kuunavang related to the DSD
    - Snaff backing up his mind inside Kralkatorrik
    - The origin of Glint's egg, and who gave it to the zephyrites. It sounded like large and male, was it a dragon champion, was it a giant dwarf?
    - The origin of communism within Dredge society.
    - Owl spirit and the exodus of the Norn.
    - Ventari's refuge's big tree and the last arising of Mordremoth.
    - Lyvia, Anise, Minister Caudecus, the Mursaat, the eye of Janthir and the illuminati.
    - Palawa Joko, Turai Ossa and the founding of the order of whispers.
    - Trahearne and his early years in Orr, his alliance with the largos.
    - Abaddon's intentions with Nightfall. Was it really about vengeance or was it about the dragons?
    I hope some of this topics help you. Cheers :)

    Why does Althea look SO much like Anise?
    Can we focus just for a second on this? They both speak in a similar manner. Althea is a flower, same as Anise and the latter's strange fixation on Canach (calling him "blossom"), makes me a bit ... curious. Even though we see Althea's ghost in GW1, why is it purple and why does it look like a phantasm? The ascended trinket in GW2 called "Althea's Ashes" are purple too and tbh, I've never seen purple ashes myself.
    Just a small thought, don't pay it too much mind :)

      @willherzog7796 Před 8 lety +1

      +Sephard Banks Also, they are both mesmers, and what color is commonly associated with mesmer magic?
      Doesn't explain how she could be alive 250 years later, however Livia is confirmed to have lived almost that long, as her death was never confirmed after Sea of Sorrows. But then Livia was a necromancer and there were rumors floating around of using her magic to siphon youth from others. Interesting theory!
      EDIT: Althea uses the same skin as Koro Sagewind, another mesmer, and this mesmer has had no death in the storyline whatsoever. She is confirmed to still be alive at the end of GW1.

    @thereaIitsybitsyspider Před 8 lety +1

    Here's a Q&A question, or maybe just some mental food:
    Are dragons "super effective" against each other?
    1. Caladbolg was made by the pale tree, a minion of Mordremoth. It was the only weapon that could slay a certain lich.
    2. The Searing Cauldron was potentially using Kralkatorik's power. It was very good against the undead.
    3. The orb that prevents Zhaitan's corruption was found in bubbles' domain. Maybe it is bubble-powered?
    The last point leads me to another question:
    Are the dragons corruptions of the human gods?
    If you considered Zhaitan to a corruption of Grenth and acknowledged the orb was powered by bubbles, you could conclude bubbles is the corruption of Dwayna. This makes some sense with the descriptions of how bubbles brought the water to life. The other dragons are also easy to assign gods to: Kralkatorik is Lyssa, Primordus is Balthazar, Mordremoth is Melandru, and Jormag is Abbadon/Kormir. The dragons never actually awoke in GW1, so the gods were always present, but after Primordus awoke, the human gods disappeared.

    • @valgrian
      @valgrian Před 8 lety +1

      +Theitsybitsyspider That almost works to some extent, but the issue arises that all the human gods, and some of the dragons too, are actually assigned two or more themes. When these other themes get involved, it gets really hard to line up. Balthazar & Primordus seem pretty straightforward, but the others are a little more complex...
      Grenth is the god of death/justice (justice being one of my favorite aspects to think of regarding Grenth) and *ice*.
      Dwayna is the goddess of life and *air*.
      Melandru is the goddess of nature and earth.
      Lyssa is the goddess(es?) of the mind and beauty.
      Abaddormir is the god(dess) of secrets/truth and *water*.
      So the sort of issue is this: Grenth's themes are split between Zhaitan--of course--but also Jormag. We could possibly attribute life to Bubbles, like Dwayna, but Bubbles is also water, which is Abaddormir's turf. Mordremoth has been described as the dragon of the jungle and the *mind*, which means it actually bears themes of both Melandru and Lyssa. I've heard Kralkatorrik referred to as the dragon of the air, so although it's very aesthetically similar to Lyssa with all the purple crystal jazz, it would also bear a theme of Dwayna. I kind of wonder if also an argument could be made that Primordus is a dragon of secrets (Abbadon) as well as fire, being sort of "hidden" underground, and the mysteries surrounding the Tome of the Rubicon... but that's just my own speculation.

    And not only the artifacts, but think about Orr! I've always thought about who will claim Orr after it has been fully cleansed, and the Pact is the only reasonable answer, otherwise the human and the charr would fight again for it. But if the Pact gets destroyed, what will happen to Orr? Which order will claim ownership of it? The three have great, valid reasons to want it (even though, as science guy, I'd vote for the Priory), and the human and the charr might not accept the now broken pact to have it.
    But in truth, I don't think the orders will break apart and become so opposed to one another. The Pact proved what they could do together, and any specific order was at fault at the failure of the attack. It might be tricky to find a new leader if Trahearne does get corrupted and eventually killed, but I really can't see them breaking appart.

    • @gamingmarcus
      @gamingmarcus Před 8 lety

      I'm not really a fanboy of any order but I'd say that the order of whisper would easily dominate any conflict between the pacts. They would (or rather already have) just infiltrate the other pacts and kill all their leaders if they have to.

    I really like the lore discussions and theories! I had never much thought about the impact of the pact on the gameplay, but I do agree that more needs to be done to highlight the three orders.
    It was such a good idea, having the three orders, that were meant to work together, but also tend to be quite antagonistic towards each other. I would have liked far more order things to do in the personal story, or at least for the pact stuff to be heavily influenced by your order. Like if you were from the Order of Whispers, there would be a far greater wealth of options for doing things that way, rather than the brute force of the vigil etc.
    If the pact was destroyed or disbanded back into the three orders, I would really love to see you going out to rebuild the strength of your order, both in terms of people but also in terms of the goals of the order you joined. Each order has its strengths, and if the pact was defeated or disbanded through circumstance, then each order would need to regroup and refocus. I would still want them working together, but refocused on giving a far better showing of their personal strengths. It would be a way for GW2 to really bring the orders depth and meaning in the expansion and beyond.

    @valgrian Před 8 lety +3

    When you started talking about Althea, I actually thought maybe you were building up to a change in speculation, wherein Rytlock channels *her* rather than Rurik to cleanse the Foefire. She was, as you mentioned, a blood heir to the Ascalonian throne, while Rurik was only heir by Adelbern's election. So is the Foefire cleansed by the heir to the one who committed it, or by the heir of the true royal line? That is the question. If the Foefire can be activated by any shmuck who wields the sword, but still only cleansed by a true royal heir, then it seems in fact we're not looking for Rurik, but for... Althea.
    Good thing I still have a load of her ashes I never managed to sell off in Piken Square. xD

    • @Fearghus
      @Fearghus Před 8 lety

      +Valgrian Pretty sure they are both of Doric's bloodline. So Rurik could definitely be considered "the rightful king". Also in all truth, there is nothing to my knowledge that states that the "rightful king" has to be of Doric's line. Could be wrong though.

    • @valgrian
      @valgrian Před 8 lety

      +ShinyFearghus Yeah, you're right on that--just looked it up again. Though Barradin was technically the next in line for the throne, Adelbern was also descended from Doric. Though technically, the possibility remains that perhaps Althea could also be able to lift the curse.
      As for whether or not it really has to be someone of Doric's line, I guess that might have to do with the nature of the magic behind it... Was it somehow bound to the Ascalonian king's line when the swords were gifted to him? Or is it broader than that, perhaps even to consider a *Charr* ruler to be the "rightful king" since it was formerly Charr land?
      If it's the former, then the question of Rurik's eligibility actually rises again; at what point did the line of Doric split between Barradin's family and Adelbern's? If they're simply cousins, then perhaps the swords were gifted and "bound" to a common ancestor--grandfather or great-grandfather. But if their lines diverged beforehand, then perhaps the magic would be bound to Barradin's line and not Adelbern's, even though they're both of Doric's line. Or did the magic simply bind to Doric's line in general, as Queen Jennah, a Krytan, is suspected to be able to lift the curse?
      Otherwise, the Charr better get their act together and figure out their Khan-Ur situation.
      But really, I'm not sure I know enough about the complexities of the situation (been leaning on the wiki for a lot of this); it's all ultimately speculation on my part.

    Two small mistakes. Near the end of the video you said that we know of a cauldron that was used to bring down the Foefire - of course you meant the Searing. More imporantly though, since you already mentioned this yesterday on the stream a few times: I don't remember Rytlock ever getting Magdaer. He attempted the cleansing ritual with Sohothin while wearing Adelbern's crown, and he jumped after the sword specifically because Sohothin was to his knowledge (with Magdaer being destroyed) the only sword capable of cleansing Ascalon.

    I liked the discussion about the character creation models, I hope you touch on the Ritualist/Paragon/Dervish(?), as they're all rather generic models as far as I can remember. The assassin was Nika, and I assumed the Mesmer was a random character, I was surprised it was Althea.

    You know Rurik might not be the actual heir though. Sure he is a person I can see becoming a revenant legend, but he was not of that blood. That's why he was going to marry Althea. So perhaps Rytlock will try to get Rurik to lift the Foefire and Rurik will say he can't do it. This begs the question, who then? Perhaps it could be a charr after all (not a fan of this one), perhaps something else on Althea, or perhaps we might try to capture and control the ghost of Duke Barradin, or maybe there is another heir.

    Whether the Pact stays or goes doesn't really matter - it's hard to feel invested in any of the Orders owing to the accelerated nature of our promotions and the Pact creation. What I think would be interesting storywise is if the player character had his/her ranks stripped (not only from the Pact but the initial Orders) that way we could reboot our ties. We would have to start from scratch and work our way back in. Then, I think that seeing as they are adding Mastery lines there should be Order specific lines - tracks that can only be fulfilled through Order specific missions - and once we pick our Order again, we are stuck with it. The progress along the line could start with really basic gathering missions and progressively get harder. What's important though is that we'd actually feel like we earned our rank. Give us a displayable title, maybe something cosmetic (like new armour sets based on rank), maybe some kind of buff if we have players of the same Order in our group - something that sets us apart.
    This is premised on a darker storyline for HoT: perhaps a secretly corrupted Traherne in charge of the Pact or (paralleling the original Destiny's Edge - having a decision result in the death of one of the original group or 2.0. Something that puts the player character in a position where we have to earn respect again. This series has so much potential, I wish there was a way that the community could help create content.

    I think that a good way to bring the orders back to the forefront (and solve a major problem with the game right now) is to remove servers from WvW and make guild ally with the orders. This would mean that WvW becomes more a training ground for friendly combat between the orders of tyria while creating a solution to the coverage/population issues with WvW. It would work similar to the alliance system from GW1. The biggest issue I would see is that in GW2 we can multi-guild. This would create some significant issues with such a model which they would have to address.

    Great vid WP, but I had an observation actually, so in the latest BWE didn't Rytlock actually say that he was searching for Destiny's Edge, mainly Logan, Eir, Zojja, but couldn't find them? If that's true then Rytlock was possibly in the jungle before that story step in which we enter and he just teleported to us... maybe :D Also WP this new series is really good and I saw a post on twitter about needing a name! Couldn't think of anything then, but I think I have something to propose now: Hearth of Lore!

    We don't really know where Rytlock reappeared from the mists though, do we? I'm pretty sure that I recall him saying in the beta that he had already been out looking for Destiny's Edge when we met him, so he must have returned earlier when we didn't witness it :P

    Oooo also WP. I'll throw this out: rurik isn't technically a true king. That would have been barradin, and then jennah of course is a queen, but isn't the duke of ebonhawk also a descendent of Doric? Maybe he will wield the swords. Also maybe the wedding there isn't for Marjory and kasmeer, but possibly for the rulers of DR and ebonhawk...?

    Hold on, Wooden Potatoes. Addledburn might recognize Rurik as his rightful heir, but why would you be so certain the magic cares about what the user thinks? Isn't it more likely a rightful heir means a descendent of Dorik, which as you just said Rurik was not? The foefire could still feasibly be ended in the future, but isn't it more likely to involve Queen Jennah or whoever winds up showing in that locket? Again, a relic of the line of Doric, I doubt its magic is actually tied to a specific human kingdom.

    How cool would it be for Anet to pull a Harvey Dent (Batman: The Dark Knight) with Traehern. All hope seems lost, Traehern turns and the Pact is destroyed but only the player character finds out about Traehern's betrayal and having succumb to Mordremoth. So in being given a choice, the player can choose to spread a "white lie" about Traehern's noble sacrifice.

    something which have been bothering me for a while now is that there are 6 elder dragons... and not 7, which is a magical numbers in most western story-telling.
    what is however fitting is that each dragons so far is related to a specific playable race;
    zhaitan = human
    primordius = asuran
    jormag = norn
    Kralkatorrik = charr
    mordremoth = sylvari
    deep sea dragon = tengu
    yes, tengu isn't a playable race yet but everything points towards it, however I think we might be able to play them once the deep sea dragon is revealed.
    soo, maybe in the far far future we might get a 7th dragon, to complete the set, this could either be a future playable race or more interestingly ( i think) it could be the ultimate dragon which all races has to truly face together. and could be the final to the elder dragon story.

    Well, there IS a bit of Racial banter between players in GW2 from time to time. I usually like to call out a Race and say Asura are superior (which they are, can't argue with facts) and the responses are pretty hilarious. It's funny to see how quickly people go from casually talking about stuff while waiting for a Boss to spawn to defending the honour of their preferred race and actually getting into character.
