    Well, calling masteries attunement is like calling leveling attunement. The difference here is that masteries aren't just gotten purely to do the raids and they aren't done as a specific quest. They are done along with the rest of the content

    • @woofwoofmeow0
      @woofwoofmeow0 Před 9 lety +3

      And some masteries (eg gliding) will be actual mechanics you can use in the middle of combat. So it's not that masteries are a requirement to DO the raid, they're requirements for actually beating it.

    • @Alesthes
      @Alesthes Před 9 lety

      +Eddie Yi Exactly. Moreover, as I think they even openly said in one comment, it can easily be that on the first boss of the wing all the mastery you need is to have gliding unlocked (which may come immediately after you start the expansion) while the last boss will require some characters (not the full raid) to be deep in some mastery line.
      It's not difficult to immagine how it can be indeed quite accessible at first and becoming more a requirement down the line, unlike the horrible attunement mechanics.
      Seriously, WP, I think on this you are being too harsh on them and not open enough to think how it may work...

    • @goat1373
      @goat1373 Před 9 lety

      +Eddie Yi really the only difference is that they are gates to beating the content as opposed to gates to entering the content

    • @AruthaSilverthorn
      @AruthaSilverthorn Před 9 lety

      I think the annoying thing is they envisioned it as you can choose which mastery to choose, but learning lore first is not going to help with raiding so choice goes away. Hopefully what they said is true, it would be interesting if there were roles eg, you need 3 gliders, 3 mushroom people, 3 lore people etc.
      Again this is stemming from the fact that I envisioned masteries as taking almost as long as PvP rank took at launch 0.o

    • @torreyrg42
      @torreyrg42 Před 9 lety

      +AruthaSilverthorn however masteries train and unlock much faster than pvp ranks currently do, also the article gave examples of the "movement" masteries, but it never said lore masteries "are not included". the article also mentioned raid specific masteries that will be released alongside the raid wings.
      Another aspect of the mastery system that many people seem to forget is that in order to unlock masteries, players will need to earn mastery points by completing content. It's easy to earn XP in GW2 but players will have to make sure they have enough points to "buy/unlock" the next level of mastery they want. This means they will have to do well in the adventures, go do open world mini dungeons and jumping puzzles, fight hard to find world bosses complete achievements, and finish the story content and live releases.

  • @Auesis
    @Auesis Před 9 lety +22

    Oh dear god, please do NOT compare attunement to Masteries.
    Attunements are a hideous piece of shit list of arbitrary tasks that nobody cares about to complete before you even have the privilege of entering a raid.
    Masteries are a central system to the expansion which you will be progressing to acquire no matter what you're doing.
    Coming from someone who went for WIldstar raids and their AWFUL attunement process, this isn't even a gate.
    Also RE: Enrage. Enrages are mandatory - to stop you taking 40 years to grind a boss to death without proper execution of mechanics. Almost every raid in existence has had enrage mechanics. It does not necessarily enforce anything related to a berserker meta - it simply can mean that you need to execute a fight's mechanics properly to get the right DPS windows. Even DESTINY, an FPS, executes this mechanic properly.

    • @gamingmarcus
      @gamingmarcus Před 9 lety +3

      It's simply the fact that anet says you can instantly go into the raid and everything is open, yet you won't be able to finish it until you've maxed like 2/3 of all mysteries.
      That is kind of lying.
      But I think it's only for the casual players so they don't say "oh but I don't wanna spend 200 hours until I can fulfil the requirements to do the raid"
      Just marketing. But it seems a bit unfair

    regarding the no attunement thing, think of it this way: you're going to get the masteries anyway, because you need them for everything, including the open world, and you get them by doing anything you want. so it's like leveling. orr is "gated" by lv80. that's how raids will be gated as well.
    if they went for attunements though, imagine that if you wanted to play in orr, not only did you have to get to lv80, but you needed to get like 80% world completion, or some other arbitrary rule that has nothing to do with what you want to do in orr itself, and you may or may not have started working towards, but most likely are nowhere close to completing.

    The way I understood that is you'll need SOMEONE in the Raid with the masteries, but not necessarily everyone. So since there's no attunement, someone new the to game can join a raid without having to jump through a lot of hoops, since their raid will already have the mastery parts covered. (But them also having some masteries would likely help).

    Interesting that you bring up the whole concept of attack that go through evasion and such, since Daredevil's Pulmonary Impact will do just that. They have said the only way to dodge the damage from that will be invulns, damage inversion(defiant stance, etc) or mass damage mitigation. So the tech seems to be there as a timed effect. Will be cool to see if they can carry this concept into regular boss attacks as well.

    WP, I have a different take on those Mordrem events. I think it's metrics- and retention-driven: they know they have a lot of new players and want to keep them around. By putting in a big world event at a level they can access, you're 1) showing them the fun of the Living World system without having to build a full patch 2) showing them that world events are a thing as many of them might not even know about world bosses etc and 3) driving them (as you said) into guilds which will help with retention.
    It's no good to have your game go free to play, bring in thousands of people, and then have them leave because they never find a reason to stick.
    I wouldn't be surprised if there's more of these events in level 40-50 zones in 1-2 weeks.

    i really wish they would re-tune the combat system to get away from this speed clear mentality, but, if they do, they need to change the rewards accordingly i feel. We made GW2 into a society that gravitates to the easy money, and if you up the time to complete (and not necessarily the challenge) its a change set out for disaster i think. Like i said, i DO want longer dungeons and encounters in general, it just gets you more entertainment in the long run honestly.

    The whole 'enraged' idea is pretty interesting to me and is almost the same mechanic that we had in the Domain of Anguish in gw1. Enemies would do 50% more damage when below 70% health and another 50% damage when below 30%. I don't really know how perfectly it can be implemented in gw2, but I think it's nice that they are looking back to the endgame content in gw1.

    +WoodenPotatoes You keep talking about the raids like there can only be 1 difficulty mode and they can either be true hardcore content or half assed (in order to include more ppl) but there can be multiple difficulty modes. In WoW there are; players that care only about the story/feeling like they've completed the raid can run it in easy/story mode while veterans/players interested in awesome loot/achievements can run the hardcore difficulty.

    have to agree with the comment about bosses using more mechanics in longer fights. Me and a guildie needed fractal daily the other day, but no one else was on, so we duoed a level 6. Not a big deal to some, but the least people we had ever done was 4 manning a 40. We saw mechanics we hadnt before and used builds we hadnt looked at before. It was really quite fun even though it took alot longer.

  • @ANoBaka
    @ANoBaka Před 9 lety

    Well.. What ANet is saying is that there's nothing stopping you from going into the raid at any time.
    However if you don't have the masteries, you'll be crushed.
    As such, what they're saying is that it's a soft wall rather than a hard wall.
    What this then does is that you can go in there, explore it and gather information about what you need to complete the raid, or at least get further into it. But then you have to go out and prepare those things before you can go further.
    This is of course redundant when the raid has been thoroughly explored and documented on the wiki, but before that, nobody knows how it works and it has to be explored. Unless of course you're running with people that don't want to wiki it and then you get the exploration experience yourself as well.
    As such, there's no attunement, but you can't complete it if you don't have the proper masteries and it does have a point.
    Good idea or bad idea? I don't know. But that's what I get from their statements.

    I'm quite content with the idea of raids. I played GW1 for ~6000 hours but quit GW2 after about 200 was because after you beat the game, there was nothing there. I'm not okay with grinding for hundreds to thousands of hours just for a legendary weapon. I remember spending hundreds of hours wiping in the Underworld because it was so hard but at least that was more fun than grinding mindlessly.

      +Dan Le I will commend Anet for making some of the elite items hard to get, but my biggest disappointment is that everything is Mforged, or crafted.. both are incredibly boring. I play this game after coming home from a hard day of work, I want the elite items and I want to work hard to get them.. I just don't want my end game experience to be alt-tabbing between crafting guides and the game... That said, love the game to death, and I hope HoT provides alternatives that are more exciting to claim elite gear!

  • @Gunnar-Peterson
    @Gunnar-Peterson Před 9 lety

    You are right about their approach to raids and masteries, don't say there are no requirements to do raids and then turn around and say oh but you need this to actually complete it. Raids are supposed to be endgame content and as such they should have requirements otherwise you just go right back to square one and end up with what we have now.
    Arenanet can't go round and round in circles forever, eventually they have to break the cycle of casuals.

    so I not only won't ever get one but have also never really tried but I still LOVE the concept of 1st completer titles. it's not even just the things you mentioned like wanting one for yourself. there's also the celebrity factor where it's cool just to have talked to the person and whatnot that I feel shouldn't be dismissed. it's big enough irl that there's whole shows and magazines dedicated to celebs and a signature can be worth more money than I even want to think about. sure the title wouldn't be on that level, but boy would it still carry some weight.
    also, now that I think about it... is there a good way to petition for this I wonder?

      yeah thank you! those titles take the concept of standing around in hub cities to show off your new armour to the next level. they are the ultimate goal and getting world first should give you something asthetic to show others you are among the wlite playing this game.

    The idea of multiple armor sets being required for raids shouldn't come as a surprise. In GW1, which had zero raid content, I had armor for all my Necro attributes except Soul Reaping, 55 farming, high HP, and high energy. Being able to rise to any occasion in PvE is something you have to get a handle on once you get to max level because while the people who run the typical meta gear will succeed at first they will not be ready for new challenges that come their way. I'm actually working on getting bigger bags and storage because I'm still determining what sets I need with me and what I can pull out at need. Right now I carry Rampager's(this is my standard PvE armor b/c PvE is easy) and Nomad's armor and I want some Zerk gear but have no room for it.

    my only complaint about the weekly rewards is this, what if on the day your guild decides to hold raid night, you always have to work. You will never be able to make it, unless they run another one another time to fit your schedule. And what incentive would those people who could make it the first time have to do it again if they won't get a reward out of it because the weekly counter hasn't reset yet. It excludes people based on scheduling issues. Even in the largest guilds there might not be enough hardcore players on at enough opportunities to make it possible for everyone who wants to raid to be able to; with only a weekly reward.

    Yeah right. Legendary armor, no more of that.
    That is what I was afraid of, and it's happening. I'll just hope that it won't be everyone who ends up having legendary armor.
    I like the idea of bosses going enraged. It makes it so you can't just all equip Ventari gear and just hit the boss with wet noodle damage. It has to also force you to have enough damage, support and some controle to kill it.
    And yes, they have to understand how strong dodge, block and all the other skills are. Have a boss get unblockable for a few seconds. Make it use boon-remove, make it use attacks while evading (Pistol Whip).
    And I also liked the idea of nerfing PS warrior, its just a bit to good, 3 targets would be fine. And please don't make abilitys hit up to 10 targets. Keep it at 5, and then people will have to think about group setups and their position on the field.
    We have very little info, but I am pretty confident they can make it challenging, just afraid the number tuning will be to easy. We will see!

    I think the effectiveness of defensive skills should scale with defensive stats. Even if it's about damage, like an automatic riposte after a parry (actually it would be cool if that kind of skill had different ratios affected by different stats). Right now you can defend yourself (and your party) too efficiently while being on a full damage stat set. And the obligation to have a healing skill that's efficient enough without investing in healing power is not good either.

    I agree with WP that its a shame that world first types of awards are not available to the elite end of the player spectrum, as these are the kinds of rewards that encourage good play without warping the game further down.
    In fact I think Anet are missing a huge trick by not having both fixed and rolling recognition of this kind of achievement.
    Say you had an event like Teq, that was Guild based (and only guild based). You could score its success by time or some other metric. Then you could rank that score and each guild could appear ranked on a list, maybe quite a long list to facilitate better inclusion. You could also have each player in that success appear in a different list by name. You could remove duplicate entries for both guild and players to prevent spamming and let more people onto the list.
    Then you could refresh the list monthly, amalgamate successes over the year(s) and do tons of other stuff with the data to allow folks to remain engaged even if they are not at the top of the list. Look at the NFL or baseball for Chrissakes.
    So much fun to be had, so much wasted opportunity....

    But you're right in being so, because we've never been proven wrong in that regard.
    I do think we should be careful of shouting our concerns (mainly on reddit) before we've seen or heard anything. The comment of the dev you referred to was in a Necro QQ thread where people took the examples of the blog and said: "well, the current Necro can't do this so we're useless."
    I let my imagination run wild and actually thought that the Necro would have a decent place in raids! Specifically the Blood Magic trait, which is a fantastic supporting traitline. How about a tank necro with party-wide lifesteal, while the adds of the boss aggro on you, having the highest vitality, and the necro keeping them away and stealing life like a champ. Necro's excell (only) in survivability and I think that's where their strength lies.
    A necro with Transfusion is also and excellent fail-safe, being able to teleport downed people out of AoE, for example.
    I just love Blood Magic.

    I don't think Titles should be used at all for world first. But like in Rift there was a game wide announcement when someone or a group got world first and the related achievement, that was pretty cool. And I feel like world first is something the community keeps track of not the game. I think titles would be better for really hard challenges within the raid, i.e. like triggering a hard mode in Ulduar back in WoW and then downing the boss. Meaning you could kill the boss the regular way, but getting the achieve, or in this case a title, for doing something extra special would be even better IMO

    WP, this is not even remotely related to GW2 but I have a question. Have you ever considered just picking up and moving across the country/world? I am currently very strongly considering it but the rational part of my brain is holding me back.

    Talking about the number cap changes on skills. You can't just see it in terms of raids.
    Everything that changes numbers cap is very very dangerous for wvw. A might skill with a 10 man cap would be completely broken for example.

    The only gate i think raiding should have beyond masteries is players have to either complete or reach a certian chapter of the heart of thorns storyline content, given arenanet said raids will be set after HoT content this would make sense.

    it's nice that they're adding some content after such a long time (since Jan) it is a shame that it - apparently - took the addition of F2P for them to do so.

    I really like the idea of having a variety of max people for aoes but what about this. I would like to see a large aoe the only does a certain amount of damage regardless of the number of people in it. Such an ability could be used as a massive spike on a single target but can be counter played by someone moving into the aoe and sharing the damage.

    i just hope they won't give in to the inevitable backlash they're gonna get once people run into actual problems with finishing the raid. if they seriously start nerfing they obliterate the entire point of the raiding system. this has to be difficult and stay that way for the rest of the game, this is how they market it. this is the biggest challenge the pve has to offer in the game, so not everyone should be able to do it, that's just the way it is. it's not about splitting your playerbase, it's about giving everybody something to work towards, something to strive to. This is why i really hope this still has importancy in the story, cause it just ups the stakes for it if you make it more climactic in a story based sense

    Mini's as reward is a good sign.. so maybe they will go more B2P as Mike suggested and such rewards will go ingame instead being in a gem-store.
    Guild-decorations would not at all make sense to be in the gem-store anyway.. Who is then supposed to buy it, the leaders? And if a member buys it and he leaved the guild what does then happen? No, guild-stuff like that would make no sense in the gem-store.. But mini's are a good sign

    Did you know the Font of Rhand is actually bugged though? And people regularly ask for a mesmer portal.
    It's a shame, really. I think it's an incredibly fun mini-dungeon as well, but none of the new players will get to experience it properly.

  • @ReiSilver
    @ReiSilver Před 9 lety

    hey WP I remember you weren't too impressed with the mastery path that was mainly focused on helping new players/low level characters. With harder content coming out how would you incentivize more experienced players to reach out to new ones in order to help them become ready to take on harder challenges? I usually find someone helping me through a new dungeon or what have you a lot better then passively watching a guide video.

    Hey WP,
    Love your videos; I think it was your lore series that got me into your channel but since then I've been watching regularly, and I love hearing your take on GW2 news, etc, and all the interesting little things you do like tyria 3D and the pirate specialization competition and such.
    I did have one question for you: would it be possible for you to not always assume players are always male when you speak in hypotheticals? For instance, you talked about exclusive titles and how "the guy" who got one would be seen by other players and how "he" would have an impact on the community that way. As a female player who's been with GW2 since launch, I'd just like to point out that the player who ends up winning such a title--should one exist at some point--could always be female, or--for that matter--someone of nonbinary gender. Gender neutral language is always useful to avoid undue assumptions. =)
