I remember when $500 would buy you the top of the line card, period.
I understand the problem with price increase due to shortage but saying things like 'I remember when things were so cheap' is misleading as hell. Because those graphics cards then could not run games at 4k, or even 1440p high refresh rate, even though monitors existed.
So basically what you saying is you remember when the high end were cheap but also couldn't actually keep up with the display hardware anyway.
@@jyotshak What? high end cards have always been able to keep up with the display hardware of the time. You are the type of person marketing departments love. Seeing no problem with a higher price point because the tech is more powerful than previous generations. Thankfully not every one feels that way and manufactures generally need to keep prices relatively down to stay competitive even as tech improves. But you will always have some consumers willing to pay outrageous prices for the newest and best top end tech so you will always have a tech top with diminishing returns when it comes to the price vs more powerful tech .

Things did not change in just 2 years. Even in 2020, VRAM matters more than people (reviewers) thought. Games like Cyberpunk, Control, and some others already have problems with 8GB VRAM, things like fps drops, lowres textures, stutter, etc. However, reviewers did not realize this problem, because they typically only play games for a brief moment for benchmark and that's it. These memory issues only appear later on, after a prolonged play session as the memory pool gets more and more saturated.
BINGO
And people still defend 4080 with *16 GB of VRAM is good enough*. Yes, is enough today, we don't know next year , when you pay fucking over 1000$ for a card, you don't want to get bottlenecked by VRAM for at least 5 years. I don't use softwares requiring nvidia, I don't use RT and I don't need DLSS at 1440p. Meh, 1 generation behind current has been my motto for the past 15 years. It's stupid to pay 2-3x for a measly 30% improvement, and that's even without the scalpers tripling the price again. Dummies can pay $2000-$3000 for a 4000-series from a scalper if they want. I'll be slapping a waterblock on a used 3080 I'll prob get for $600-700 and only lose maybe 20-30% performance (not noticable without benchmarks = good enough) over a 4080 (die shrinks are getting less effective and less often in case anyone hasn't noticed).

Totally agree, I hate when it's only a written on screen addendum.
I've been playing on a console all my life. I just built my first PC, wanted to do it for a long time. I spent a lot of money on the specs hoping I don't have to upgrade it in a long time. I managed to buy the new RX 6800 xt with 16gb Vram. Hopefully it lasts me at least 5 years haha. So far loving it and the PC experience. Everything Is so much smoother.
As far as video memory goes you should be good for a long time.
holy fucking mackerel
If you don't mind turning down a few settings later down the line (much later, you'll breeze through max settings for probably a minimum of 2 years of new games, if not more) it should easily make it to the 5-year mark if my aging GTX 980ti (released in 2015) is any indicator. I can still run games that just came out (except Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, though they are still playable at low/medium settings) at a mixture of high and medium settings just fine at 1080p, and I'm sure it'd do fine at 1440p too if I turned down a few more settings. I'm sure you'll love being on PC. I switched back during the PS3 era when the PS4 was being announced because I refused to pay a subscription to play online. That was definitely one of the best decisions I've made, I haven't looked back and probably never will.
I mean gddr6 has been out for over 3 years now. In another year and a half we’re gonna hopefully have another new generation of faster memory. By the time the new cards come out your memory is already 5+ years old and if games keep getting more visually intensive. Doubt your card will last you 5 years. The extra memory is a marketing gimmick for amd since they are using last gen memory.

The Vram is good to keep in mind, but for some titles, the 3D Graphic ussage is relevant too. Take for example Warhammer 3. I have a GTX 1660 Ti whit 6G of Vram. I lowered all the settings to about 4 point under optimal in Geforce Experience and reduced the frame rates to 28 from Nvidia Control Pannel. The end result was that the 3D was about 90% which was under 100%. On the other hand, with the same sistem, Warhammer 2, the prevoius title, was using all the 6G of Vram on the default Ultra graphics setting and it looked like it was not enough, reaching 70 fps on its default game benchmark. If I am to run Warhammer 3 on ultra, I do not think 6G of Vram will cut it, I do not remember it, yet I remember the GPU reaching temperatures of 90 degrees which were definitely above 85 degrees. I am curious how demanding will Warhammer 3 be when the Immortal Empire cames out, I doubt 8G of Vram will be enough, the cooling archotecture must be over the top and the 3D Graphics will probabily push the temperature over the 85 degrees as well. My GPU usually sits at 60 degrees and when not used, at under or aroumd 40. Those 3D Graphics are killing it.
I just bought a SH 1060 Ti and I am more than happy with it.

Yea, Ultra isn't a recommended setting. That's an easy way to cripple things with diminishing returns from the high setting. I got the 3060ti 8gb and WH3 is no problemo and running at a normal temp. The memory bus is also 256 bit which is damn good. You could have an airflow issue with case like not enough exhaust. Also the 1660ti may not be enough for the recommended GPU with that title anyway. I'd probably double check system specs for WH3 first.

The way borderlands works is that they have whole zones you load into so if you to test memory usage you would have to load into a whole new area such as a town. Or fast travel somewhere.
I recently upgraded to an RTX 2060 with 6gb VRAM and I’ve noticed Dishonored 2 is quite the VRAM hog, to the point where after playing through a level, I sometimes start experiencing the bad stutter and then a crash to desktop. Thing is, the game runs beautifully for a time, but it seems as I explore a level, VRAM slowly climbs, and it doesn’t garbage collect. All that said, I have textures on ‘Ultra’ in-game, so I’m going to fiddle with lowering a few settings and keep monitoring VRAM. Thanks for this video!
I think what you describe is a memory leak.
@@cuthalionbeleg1267 Indeed very possibly. Lowering the textures from the 'Ultra' setting seemed to fix for me; I didn't have any problems after changing that at least.
I've already run into a few games that need more than 8gb vram at 1440p. If you max GR Breakpoint at 1440p you'll eventually run into stuttering on an RTX 3070 due to vram being maxed.
Iv seen games using over 20gb lol. And any game where you super sample the resolution, it uses a shit ton of memory.
@Tjokkaflens I can somewhat understand it if you want to counteract the blurring that poor TAA implementations can have on particular games (like RDR2 used to suffer from), but in general, yeah, there's no need to supersample
@@4gbmeans4gb61 no game uses 20gb vram, they eat all the vram you have no mather how much, it doesn't mean you need the 20gbvram it just means the game is poorly optimized. COD warzone is an example, it will eat all 24gb vram
“People upgrade every 4-5 years” 12GB may not be important now, but what about over the next 4-5 years?
"How much Nvidia is going to fuck this 12GB up in next 4-5 years?"
probably not at all
remember, all hardware made two gens ago can run almost any game at medium at 1080p
thats by design since no one with a brain wants to leave money on the table. and devving for high end hardware and leaving 80% of the market not even capable of running your game is doing just that
12GB? That's plenty. Even for 4k. 8GB? That's not enough. You literally got that amount 5 years ago and is one reason why pascal has aged well. The 10gb of VRAM on the 3080 was a difficult choice for Nvidia to make. Since there are no 1.5gb modules, it was either 10 or 20gb. That's about an extra $150. Is it worth it? Difficult to say as Nvidia will correct that issue with a 3080ti at some point in the future.
yeah not really happy about losing a GB uppgrading from a 1080ti to a 3080... Now its fine. But I Normally skip a gen. Atleast im at 1440p. its something.
Yeah I sure was happy about getting a 390 instead of a 970 because of the vram but after my 390 died at 3 years old I got a 1070. They both have 8 gigs and now after having the 1070 for two years vram still has not been an issue. My guess is that 12 gigs will do fine in 5 years. 10 might not.
I have an RTX 2060 that I got in November of 2019. I’m already starting to see the effects of not enough VRAM on 1080p. I can’t play some of my games on max settings because it runs out of VRAM too fast. I actually had a stutter that was literally 3 minutes long before it let me play again, but then it kept stuttering really bad so I quit. When I upgrade my GPU, I’m definitely going for a high VRAM amount to future proof it more as well since I also plan on getting some 1440p monitors.
As always, great video with great info. Keep it up Jay!
I'm considering getting a 2060 super (8gb) .... If not I'll get 2060 .... What do you think is it a good card for 1080p ?
Buying a 6gb gpu (rx 5600 xt) back in November 2020 for about 280€ feels like the best choice I made in my life...at the time I almost backed out from buying it, thinking I should wait some months so that I can buy a more high end gpu... glad I didn't
same here, only concern i had was about vram limitations, but its gddr6, and i havent ran into any issues because of the low amount of vram. absolutely love the card, espically coming from a damaged 5500 xt out of box
4:20 3:40 2:00 Jay's brain voltage is too high, his clock speeds aren't stable.
All of it ends in 0
Yeah he needs to overclock his brain!
A little surprised to see the RE remakes took a massive chunk of V ram on the higher shadow settings.
I had to hit the sub and like button not only because the great info received… but I see tires in the background and heard you say that’s what I must sound like when the car passed….. which maked me think you’re into cars and computers !!!! That means you’re a great person lol.
Great video, I recently got this 3060 with 12gigs and well... it's a little late but did you factor in multi monitor setups VRAM requirements? And there's also 3d rendering etc which you know..
Helpful to know, I game on a 1440p and just got a rx 6800 xt, 16 gb did seem a bit overkill. One thing no body talks about is that it's not just new but all gpu's that are crazy expensive. I paid $1400 for the 6800xt, but only because I traded a 5700 challenger I paid $350 for new. For a Vega 56 and a 8 gb 580. I sold them for $800 and $550 respectively... So I upgraded for $50 out of pocket. That's been my best upgrade for the least amount of cost. Not bad...
Had a 3060ti FE traded for a 3070FE Then traded that to some miner for a brand new EVGA 3070ti FTW3. This market really has us out here being creative lol.
Color me jealous. 😉😁
Actually, you paid 1400 - 1350 reselling price of both cards + (original Vega price + original 580 price). The reselling isn't just "clean" money, you got to subtract what you bought them for.

Literally watching a number go slightly higher lmao. I love this guy.
Yeah it's far from a test review. It's like reviewing GPU's 3.0.
Half his problem is that he never restarted the games after altering all those settings. It's going to use the same old stuff regardless of what he changed. Some games won't load new resources until textures/etc. are optimized.
As long as it has pretty colourful lights, it doesn't matter.
