    I would say one component I severely underestimated was the importance of the Hard Drive - if you have insane components with a HDD instead of an SSD, you will suffer big time on some games when it comes to LOD and textures popping in super late. Took me ages to solve that mystery when playing Kingdom Come Deliverance and an SSD fixed it immediately. Speedy storage actually does matter but again, I'm sure there's an art to spending appropriate vs ridiculous in the same vein as a motherboard.

    • @NuclearHeadshot
      @NuclearHeadshot Před rokem +6

      @@BrucePain-_- bulk storage? SSDs are still bad value for money when you need absolute volume, although far less so than it used to be. As for who'd need that much storage, audio/video recordings take up huge space. Let's calculate because I've got nothing better to do.
      A 10 minute audio recording at 48kHz sample rate and 24 bit depth is over 86MB in mono, multiplied by amount of tracks you record which for drums is 10-20 microphones depending on size of kit and setup. A 10 minute recording project of drums is 860MB-1.6GB. If you also add a normal band setup with 2 guitars (each guitar doubled per industry standard), bass, and two vocals (usually also doubled), you're sitting at 19-30 tracks, at so 1.6-2-4GB per 10 minutes of recording.
      4k60fps video recordings are also HUGE in size, at around 750MB per minute. A music video project for said 10 minute song in 4k60fps is at least 7.5GB in size. Usually it's at least double because of the recorded material that doesn't make the final cut.
      Both cases disregard retakes which usually aren't deleted beforehand if at all either, and we're still talking minimum of 16.6GB in total for 10 minutes of finished product.

Yes I recognized I'm a filthy casual, finally price for the same ram drop significantly and got a 2nd 16gb last year. I planned my build with future upgrades in mind. That allowed me to enjoy it a lot sooner.

I'm now looking to upgrade about half of them this upcoming summer and the more research I do, the more my estimated cost goes down (still meeting my standards, of course)
    P.S. If any of you watching this video are debating wether to build your first PC or buy one pre built, 100% build your own. It is a bit intimidating, but it took me an afternoon to figure out all the basics. I bought mine as an impulse buy on black friday. I got my money's worth, but I didn't get all of what I wanted, which is the best that you can expect from a prebuilt imo.

      Hey can one of you answer a really easy question
      I want to build my own but one thing im confused about is what do i do about the OS?

      But if i build my own from the ground up how do i get windows on there without having to buy it separately?

    • @JM-hj3sm
      @JM-hj3sm Před rokem

      @Gorilla Pimp I already had a license key that came with my prebuilt. I know there are ways that you can get Windows license key pretty cheap. Just be careful where you get it from.
      I have a USB boot drive, which is just a USB flash drive that has the OS on it that I can use to upload it onto a computer if I have to, but I'd still need the product key. There are guides online on how to do this, it's pretty simple. I'm just not that good at explaining things. I think you can use a product key from an old computer you don't use, even if it's not Windows 10 or 11. Just make sure it's deactivated on your old computer.
      If you're only option is to buy a new product key, consider using Linux OS instead. It's a perfectly good OS. It is a bit daunting to download and use at first, but there are flavors of it that are quite easy to learn and a ton of guides on how to install and use many different flavors of Linux. Many people prefer Linux. I have used many different versions of it at work and school and am constantly debating wether or not I should switch over to Linux or have it duel booted on my computer.
      TL;DGAS You can download Windows onto a USB and install it that way. There are places where you can get a cheap product key, or you can use a key from an old laptop or something. If you're considering spending over 100 bucks on a product key, Linux OS is a free alternative to Windows OS. You can find guides on how to do any of this online, including here on CZcams.
      I hope I pointed you in the right direction. Goodluck.

      I was thinking the exact same thing. I actually stream, record (running a 16 channel digital studio mixer), play music, Discord and game all at the same time on two monitors. In which case a person needs much more RAM than 16 GB. HOWEVER, if you are not one of these people- 16-32GB is more than adequate. And if all you do is surf the web and watch CZcams videos (like most Apple fans lol), you don't even need 16GB of RAM.

    It's actually really hard not to over spend, but then it technically isn't really overspending if you're getting what you need. At least in my case. A few points you made make a lot of sense, but then I look at what I have and the reasons I needed an upgrade. A couple games I play(ed) had issues maxing out CPU AND RAM, so a faster CPU with maybe more cores so background don't choke game (going from gen 3 intel to gen 10!). And more than 16 gigs so RAM isn't maxed, but speed isn't so much an issue, so slower is ok. Then, for a few to few dozen % more overclocking seems to be a no brainer, but isn't crucial. And then looking at price difference on CPU's, might as well go for faster for a bit more. But, some to most lower end mobo's don't have enough usb (if too low end) and/or sata for all the drives. Not having a CD drive anymore fixes 1 spot only, so down to 5. More capacity could fix lack of drive space, but then your spending a lot more on all new drives to replace the ones you have that still work. Although in my case this is redundant since all my drives are full anyways so had to replace all of them with bigger anyways. So now down to 3 drives but almost doubled capacity (1, 2, and 4 TB up from 1, 1, 1, 2TB, and a 512GB). One of the new drives is also nvme so now sata limit isn't an issue, but now I have unused drives too, which is a waste to me. Not to mention back-up drive will eventually move external. One thing I know I overspent was the cooler. I live in SoCal so it does get hot, and always had issues with PC getting hot. So I got an AIO instead of using an air cooler, or even the stock cooler. Benefit is it will be much quieter since PC sits right next to me. Plus it looks nicer. I know a CPU can rock on at 70C+ for years even, but I only upgrade every 5 years or so and don't like to see over 60C, even when it's 85F-90F (~30C-32C) in the house at times. Then there's the case. You usually would only build in it once so build ease isn't much a factor. But it sits next to me, so I want it to look nice and have good air flow. It's just too easy to over spend.

      ...but he didn't talk about it being 'bad' at all. At its price, the value isn't great when boards between probably $100-$175 can do everything that the "average consumer" needs a motherboard to do. That doesn't make more expensive boards "bad".

    I've always been wondering why there is such a big difference between the mobo prices, and to be fair, there isnt a huge difference. All you have to do is what Jay says in the video, look for your requirements and make sure the mobo has what you are looking for. a mobo dont need to be pricy, it just has to have what you require

      I’m new to PC, I haven’t enabled xmp profile. Purely because I don’t know what I’m doing. Is it as simple as enabling it? You don’t have to mess around with any other settings? Timings etc? I’ve watched videos including an old one from jay. But I’m not confident in changing anything.

    Cooler and case are pretty important for a good airflow, you are not gonna get a good experience when the graphics card overheats and throttle giving you stutters.

    I operate CAD software for my job. I used Solidworks for the first 4 years using 3D modeling, and I now use Autodesk Inventor. It is almost like playing a game, where you get to invent things. Most CAD software can design almost anything. Probably most of the gaming hardware, especially things like cases, fans, even the electronics are easier to design with 3D modeling. Fusion 360 seems to be the hobbyist choice for CAD, for a cost of $500 a year. I saw your video with the ASUS ProArt Z490 motherboard. It would be nice to see how you configured the system it went into, and while probably a gaming machine, how it performs with Fusion 360.

    I actually think blind taste tests would be informative for a lot of builders. Essentially have like half a dozen builds of different configurations under cloaks and have people try all the systems with various tasks to rank them and see what people actually like, dislike, notice, don't notice, etc.

    I think Jay should make a short 5-10 minute video listing all the good brands of each of these parts and why that's the case as well as listing the ones that aren't worth the price or are just bad.
    And make it every 6 months to a year.
    edit: 5-10, not 50-10, haha
