    I think another important moment to be noted is Doffy's betrayal of Monet. Monet died for him because she truly believed that he was the man who would become King of the Pirates. But as Doflamingo said to Bellamy, Doffy never cared about being a pirate at all. He was only what he was so that he could destroy what he viewed as lesser. The blind devotion to the fake ideal of Doffy is just another way he manipulated his subordinates.

    • @papaaeon7210
      @papaaeon7210 Před 5 lety +44

      Another moment would be when Doffy was called by Trebol the "Champion of Evil". Trebol is responsible more then anyone else for the man Doflamingo is. We see that it is possible for men to change in Dressrossa and in Reverie, but Doffy was never given the chance to change. He was sent into the world by a naive father, and raised by Trebol who wanted his captain to be a King, not a man. So in a way, I think Corazon was wrong. Doffy was not born evil, he was made evil by the people around him. And I think even Cora acknowledged this at the end, with his refusal to pull the trigger.

      @@papaaeon7210 Doflamingo has been evil since the start, even before his father renounced from their royalty, but at that point his evil side was nothing more than just a little seed, one seed which Trebol purposefully feed, maybe if Doflamingo had a mentor more like Corazon, he would've ended up different, but something that sets Doflamingo apart from Law, is that his evilness was always with him since birth

    I think the bit with Giolla only reinforces the master-toy dynamic Mingo had with his crew. They are the only ones who indulge his delusions of godhood. So they're precious to him as they shore up his ego. Someone like Bellamy, who wanted to be a partner that shared in greatness rather than a suicidal sycophant, had no chance of making it in his crew. And people like Law and Luffy who just outright dismiss him trigger him something fierce.

    • @RoronoaZoro-ur6hr
      @RoronoaZoro-ur6hr Před 2 lety +7

      Bellamy not playing into the delusions of grandeur is why he joined the Strawhat Grandfleet instead of dying a puppet working for Doflamgino, and since the D clan are enemies of the gods themselves it’s only fitting that Bellamy joined up with Luffy instead of Doflamgino.

    Another interesting thing I’ve noticed is that Doflamingo only used guns, the Celestial Dragon’s weapon of choice, on people who he felt betrayed by while Corazon used the gun as a way of talking with Doffy on even ground, he had the chance to kill his “naturally evil” brother but showed him mercy in the end.

    Amazing analysis of my favorite antagonist in the series and one of my favorite as a whole.
    I really do think it's an overlooked aspect of the Donquixote Family that his main officers all were selected by Doflamingo because of how they were all cast aside by the world in one way or another. Which is why Bellamy ultimately meant nothing to Doflamingo in the end, since he came from a fortunate upbringing and followed Doflamingo out of a false misunderstanding of his motivations. Duffy's ability to judge one's character is a really underrated aspect of his overall characterization.

    I always felt conflicted about Doffy. I believed he was the greatest villain to come out of One Piece. But something felt a bit off. I soon realized it was because Doffy was almost fodder compared to villain characters like Kaido who called him "weak". I fell under this delusion that strength was an important, key factor, especially in a shonen. Look at Meruem, for instance. I wondered how Doffy can be the greatest villain when there are others more powerful than him like even Katakuri. How wrong it was of me to equate great villainy with strength. There's so much to Doffy's character and role in the story that I cannot but be finally convinced that he is still the greatest villain in OP. He's the kind of character that changes the atmosphere whenever he enters the room. I hope someone breaks him out of jail in the nearest future so he can take part in this New Age he's been talking about for the longest time.

      The idea that a villain can only be good if they are ridiculously strong is a sadly common one. Don't get me wrong, their is nothing wrong with liking a strong villain and some of my all time favorite villains (Griffith, Freeza, Shia Pouf, Togoro etc...) are all powerful in their own way. But, not all villains are brutally strong. Take people like the Joker. He is not particularly strong (except when he can take a beating). He can't run at sub sonic speeds, he can't lift buildings or throw them, he can't even fly. Yet, his presence and role as a villain is nearly unmatched by most other comic villains. He uses freaky gadgets, mind tricks, and zany techniques to beat people like Batman or any other DC hero and forces the point that being clever is just as important as being strong. Not to mention the atmosphere whenever he appears as he immediately steals the show and this is coupled with his perfect role as a foil to Batman (A homicidal, sadomasochistic, happy-go-lucky clown hellbent on causing chaos and having a good laugh vs a dark, brooding, menacing dude who dresses as a bat to save people). Strength is a pretty minor trait in the long run as what mostly matters is how he affects both world and the characters in said world.

      @@binkssake7282 I can kinda see the idea of humanity/inhumanity in wano. Sorry for the late response here but I think that things like loyalty can often combine with humanity. We start off in a barren area with an extreme culture and class divide which shows off the lower-class as people who just want to live. They're crying that the water is poisoned, their children are dying because those are very human things to be upset about. We delve into this theme deeper with the SMILEs in wano and people who are sad but show happiness. I think Udon is symbolic of humanity being broken, "how much does it take to make someone a slave?"-type stuff is dealt with here. I can see it as a theme in wano very much so, but it definitely collides with loyalty etc

      We must be careful with this. Because love sometimes comes in the form of hate. Hate becomes a tool or a mean to reach love and the right solution to something. Many people sadly think nowadays that the act of love always comes in a pleasing manner, which is not truth. See Garp's violence towards Luffy as a means of turning him stronger and more resilient. Not only did they rip the rug out from under his feet, they did no preparation to make sure they would be safe. Then they had no ability to protect or comfort their own children, when everything went bad. They left him in the position of taking care of everyone and everything, including saving himself and his family during the crucifixion. They may not have wanted to do it, but they laid all the blocks it took to create that situation.

    But, yes, you are in turn infinitely below whatever is one step closer to Donquixote. Any value you have would be meaningless if you conflict with something he cares about more. And, of course, there is nothing he values more than himself.

    Amazing Analysis. While I still believe Blackbeard is the best OP villain, Doflamingo is still a great villain and this video reveals so many facets of his character that I didn't even consider.
    He was never born evil,just raised in an environment where he was treated like a god. In his mind, everyone else is beneath him and as a god, he is beneath everything. He did not want to be human, because by embracing humanity, he would be forced to accept his own flaws. A god had no flaws. In the end, he rejected humanity and ultimately faced defeat.

      That would also make more sense than many other villains in any case. I think if he ever does escape Impel Down, which he might, his primary goal would likely be to take down the Celestial Dragons. We all know how Oda treats Doflamingo’s speeches, and his Throne Wars speech should apply, “Tell the Celestial Dragons in the Holyland of Mariejois that they will be brought down.” That will likely become a prominent and central plot-point in the future, and it almost makes too much sense to have Doflamingo involved with that in some way or another. He is a very important figure in the One Piece world as it is, add to it that he’s an escapist Celestial Dragon.. I’d personally love to see that play into things in the future. I really don’t think it’s over for Doflamingo in One Piece. I could be wrong though 😅

    If feel like you right about Doffy needing some semblance of control in his life I think your missing the point that he needs some semblance of family too he does care about his crew at least more than you make it sound his biggest failing is that he puts himself on the same level as his top executives there was no Zoro to stop the captain and to keep the hierarchy like in the strawhats, Doffy was raised in pride not only by the Dragons but by the Doflimingo family and personal has that hierarchy but in the crew doesn't it's shown by how he doesn't stop Trebol from attacking Law but sits there passively yelling and doing nothing and how he would protect each of his family members honor and feeling but not there bodies, also adding to this in his upbringing it wasn't the world bending for him but his family bending the world for him instating that feeling that the family lives for him and the world is his but also that he could not live without the family people in power are raised in pride and the feeling that the world is theres and if they live in high places alowing them to maximizing how much they can take, also another nother note Doffy's family is one of non blood and loves eachother but doesn't have an hierarchy as a crew and has one as nakama while the strawhat's are non blood and loves eachother but has a hierarchy as a crew but not one as nakama and Big Mom's crew has non of this related in blood but a hierarchy in all that surves the strong and perfect and all surve Big Mom

    I would love to hear your opinion about Skypeia (aside from the worldbuilding). I always wondered why the arc seems to have so little consequence to the universe at large but also to the straw crew. I‘d also be interested in a thematic analysis (especially since that is not my strong suit)

    • @thornray1025
      @thornray1025 Před 5 lety

      Skypiea is so freaking good. Storywise I'd say it's the best written saga so far in the series, though I might be biased.
      Thematically it's about progress and tradition; different cultures and their coexistance; beliefs (dreams) and logic; and bunch of references to religions like names, imagenary and characters (Wiper is reference to Lucifer, Enel and Gan fall lack wings despite being native sky-people since they are gods and therefore above angels. They represent old and new testament gods.)
      + There's of course your basic One piece theme of oppressor ruling over others (God Enel).
      I may have missed some, these came just from the top of my head.

    • @daemonspade8316
      @daemonspade8316 Před 4 lety
