Adaptations, Watch Orders, and Finding the Best Experience
More of a rumination on some topics I've been considering for a while: what good are 'inferior' versions of the media or ways to go through it?

Addendum: Literally yesterday the JoBros scan group uploaded a release of Phantom Blood that changes the names of the Viz release, and they're planning to do more: nyaa.si/view/1853015
Regarding Monogatari’s Watch Order, while poking around I did find this explanation of some issues that could arise when watching it in release order (spoilers of course). But I also want to point out that the currently ongoing Monster & Off Season is not going in LN order either! The title cards do specify ‘Broadcast Order’, which implies Shaft might put the BDs out in LN order like they did Seacond Season but that remains to be seen. And obviously it’s not finished and I haven’t read the source material so I have no personal comment, which is why I didn’t say much on that front to begin with.

This video enlightened me. Before I was unable to see certain themes and aspects of C;C. I took it to much at face value. But after watching this video I feel like I was able to see the truth of C;C
please get dudebros out of one piece, they cant read or understand what a theme is. wano is so good
I enjoyed the video until you got to the part about fate. I didn't enjoy it because, you didn't seem well read in the philosophical concept in which you are dealing with. When discussing the reactions of people from different cultures of fate in media, you shouldn't only pull up media which feature it, but the philosophical structures which in form the societies which we exist in now. Determinism vs Free Will, and, if you wanna talk about the bourgeois christian conceptions and reactions to it, you would need to talk about the historical arguments Christian theologians have had about fate and determinism, and, its roots in Plato. You would then need to talk about eastern conceptions of fate: Shintoism and Daoism specifically. And, you would need to finally talk about the modern scientific and philosophical debates around fate. Of Nature vs Nurture,. of humans born of our material conditions, unaccountable for our actions, as people who are rational actors, or not, and, the nature of the Gheist. The will of history, and the realization of man. I just felt that part of the video was very shallow, but, then again, asking for a wide ranging discussion of philosophy in a One Piece video is quite the tall order. Thank you for making what you made, its good as it is!

FUCK THE RULES
Danganronpa 3 would be better if it was a visual novel like it was originally intended to be and if the writers didn't waste their time with V3. Especially if it wasn't filled with retcons.
Really like this video because I thought that some of these themes also apply to other JRPGs. For example, how you're able to face off against Monsters (representing nature) as a human by learning from experiences (EXP) and using tools. Also the Shinto Ideal of humanity and nature living in harmony by human efforts is very clearly visible in Pokémon (especially Ruby/Sapphire & Black/White)
A lot of comments below claiming along the lines of “your videos vocalized why I disliked Fairy Tail” are missing the point. Craft is going back to his earlier videos where he was early into his analysis days and finds that years of experience expose to him the fallacies, half-truths and flat out misinformation he perpetrated. No one has to agree with him but these videos advocate to be more open minded and to be less Nostalgia Critic-y.
Fantastic video. As a LuPat enjoyer myself, I tend to notice that the trend is people getting so caught up on what the season *could've* been that they either fail to or refuse to see what's actually there.
Yeah. I think the personal experience is more valuable than the consensus one especially with large franchises. At some point, I just end up going "fuck it" and starting somewhere because I really want to get into it, I will get into it. Even a sub-optimal experience is still an experience and can still be worth having.
I personally try to take risks. I've recently gotten into Sonic's IDW run despite having not played the games in a good while. I was able to catch onto how it takes place after Sonic Forces and is a story about a post war planet trying to recover in the face of Eggman's lingering prescene. Hell, I got into the comic run after picking up the "Tangle & Whisper" trade. Appealing character designs, a buddy-cop sort of story of the reckless hyper one helping the sullen veteran with their old demons, just... Whisper The Wolf in general. That sold me on the self-contained narrative and led me to the wider series.
Luffy telling vivi people die because vivi are so naive for wanting no casuality at all while Luffy broke so hard when Ace die because he knows exactly how many casuality for saving Ace. from "sacrificing" Bon Chan, letting criminals go, Luffy know all the consequences and still choose to save Ace, the only thing that he want are saving Ace and he failed. as goofy as Luffy is he never naive, he know exactly what he want and what the consequences of his action

I think that alot of people forget that the celestial spirit's magic power is the summoners power. Lucy supplies her spirits with magic power to both fight and for them to pass through the gate. For example, in the tartoros arc, after she cast urano metria, she didn't have enough power to keep the celestial spirt king there. Pointed out by the king and mard geer. In a way she is sort of like a battery pack for her spirits.
I really dread having to graduate and having to enter "real" society. Your videos, especially on Danganronpa, have helped me cope with and work on those feelings. Thank you for making videos.
It needs it
dont read the tsukihime manga in place of the game trust me bro, ruined my life
Lucy my forever fav #1 goat 😍😍😍
My Heartphilia baby 🥺💝
Does Urashima know Okiku is a..uh... nvm
This ties a lot into a discussion you see often about pixel art in video games, some nerds will tell you that pixel art was made to look good and rounded in CRTs so modern games that use pixel art are actually reproducing a fake nostalgia of a perception of pixel art that wasn't a thing in the 90s But then when you consider that probably most people even back then experienced these games through emulators in pc monitors that's how pixel art was in fact experienced even if it wasn't intended by the authors it's still just as valid
wasnt expecting to see you snorting cereal today but here we are
I like the stream of consciousness style this video has. It works well for a topic like this where it’s easy to get bogged down in the nuance of any one viewpoint.
Originally the video was more focused on Karakuri Circus, but as I thought more about the topic it broadened to the point where I had to either go into the exact kind of absurd amounts of consumption this video expresses the fears of having to do, or just do what I did, so I'm glad you enjoyed that method!
Sorry but being reminded mid-video that people watch anime on 2x speed just makes me recoil
Then you would get along HORRIBLY with my brother.
The level of salt in the veins of the author of Gantz and Inuyashiki is unreal.
He's such a dedicated hater you gotta love it.
In late 2020, I randomly decided to watch the anime adaptation of Fate/Apocrypha during COVID lockdown and I was going through a major identity crisis The show was able to get me up to speed with how the Grail War worked and what the rules of the world were without any pre-conceived notions And I was able to follow the story just fine, able to find comfort and solace in its characters during one of the darkest parts of my life Now I'm beginning to get into Fate properly through the FSN visual novel
its strange how you might develop very strong feelings on how to approach a media property, but if you think back how you stumbled on to it and still enjoyed it so much. really makes you wonder if it really even matters all that much. also being forced to engage with a piece of media by someone else through a method you wouldnt choose yourself can lead to finding your favourites you wouldnt have otherwise. like how when youre young your mom or grandma or whoever will buy something for you
My primary way of playing games is with my switch, I don’t have PC, only a laptop. However, when I wanted to get Persona 3, I wanted to decide, should I wait until I get a powerful enough PC and get Persona 3 reloaded or get Persona 3 potable on switch? I ended up going with portable, because I felt I am not missing out on a completely different experience and I am experiencing in a way that lot of people have experienced and enjoyed it, they enjoyed the game before reloaded came out, so it's probably a great experience on it's own.
my first ever experience with P3 was playing P3P on my Vita, as I didn't have access to FES and this was years before Reload. I won't deny that P3P is definitely a different experience from the PS2 versions of P3, but it is definitely a valid way to experience the game, if its alternate presentation and mechanics gel with you
cool
Yes.
Maybe not 100% in line with what you’re talking about but another thing that complicates this for video games is that gameplay often shifts over time. If you wanted to get into a series like resident evil just bring told to start at the beginning might put you off if you’re uncomfortable with tank controls. But if you start with something like RE4, you may end up disappointed by how different the earlier entries are. Also, your interest in a game can come from just seeing some gameplay of it and thinking it’s interesting and maybe you don’t wanna play multiple other games just to play that one. A lot of games avoid this by not having the narratives of each game actually tie into each other. So if you don’t like turn based combat but you think a certain final fantasy game looks interesting, you have the option to start with those later entries and maybe if you get really into those you might be invested enough in trying out the older ones.
Glad to see a new video from you!
I adore how you used the characters themes given by Kubo in this. Awesome touch.
You reminded my of how much I want to reread Ashita no Joe. (Though not for a while. Currently watching Hajime no Ippo for the first time. Been pretty fun. Always want to lift weights and shadow box while watching it.)
lol. Neji did due to bad writing. There was no purpose or significance. It's crazy how delusional fans try to rationalize that.
"More content no one asked for" My man... I wanted this for YEARS!
The reason "energy" is pronounced like that in Japanese is because it's borrowing the pronunciation from German, lol. It also doesn't exactly mean the same thing it does in English, because wasei-eigo.
Great analysis. Your note on magical girl stories having a nurturing, conciliatory tone reminds me a lot of _Steven Universe_. Despite being a boy raised by aliens, Steven very much has the personality of a magical girl who takes after his moms.
A lot of people that try to argue that Naruto is lacking seem to want to argue that because not all the problems were solved in the series missed the point. Naruto wasn't going to solve all the problems, but what he will do is help push the world forward to a better future. Madara/Kaguya's defeat wasn't the solution it was the first step towards peace. It was about enduring the pain while seeking a solution.
You guys think this game would work well with persona 5/3reload animations?
I missed this one, but just to confirm, Phoenix grade-school flashback hasn't happened yet, right?
Not yet, no.
Bleach has so many well written characters. The females are great, the suppoorting characters are all awesome in many ways. 👍

I watched the first ep. of YLIA and i couldn't shake off the fact that i didn't like how much of a pushover the main character is (and this video just explains it and i didn't even get past the first ep.) I'm glad i skipped it and gave MCILAL instead.
21:33 stg I thought he was gonna say seperate but equal
Sad I missed this! I just started replaying the games in Japanese and have a lot to say. Some notes from this VOD, apologies if these have been addressed in the next one: 1. I believe the exact reason for why the first two cases reveal the murderer is because Shu Takumi was inspired by Columbo, and wanted to put emphasis on the the thrill of cornering the culprit rather than figuring out whodunit. Generally speaking (as I'm sure you've noticed) the AA games are far more focused on howdunits than whodunits as a whole, even in the cases where the culprit's identity is kept secret. 2. Redd White isn't actually American in Japanese-his name is Masaru Konaka. Rather, he's a Japanese businessman who *spent* a lot of time in America, so he pretends to speak mostly English, except a lot of the English he uses is intentionally broken and incorrect. He's essentially LARPing as an American business tycoon. That's why in the localization, he uses a lot of made up words in English, like Cogniferous, and uses other high vocabulary wrong. 3. Maya's "burgers" are "ramen" originally. The idea in localization is that ramen is cheap, somewhat unhealthy but tasty treat, and burgers can be considered similar from an American perspective. 4. Shu Takumi actually went to a few trials in order to study up for making the first Ace Attorney, though he ended up thinking they were really boring, which I think is funny. On that note, though, while the courtroom in Ace Attorney is definitely very whacky, it is very much based on the Japanese legal system and acts more as a satire, exaggerating all of its parts for entertainment value and to say something about it.
Among the many great anime I've seen, "Aikatsu!" remains the pinnacle of my entertainment experiences and has left a lasting impression on me. It delivers a healing effect like the Iyashikei sub-genre. An English-friendly Blu-ray release would be great if it ever got licensed in the US.
Aikatsu is Love wins in english ❤❤❤ I think
It’s up to the writer… but if there’s anyone get arroused by that, they need to get their brain check.
