Fishman island is pretty underrated, probably because it's when the anime started getting really bad. The manga versions a lot stronger, and this video does a good job showing why it's much better than people give it credit for
Funny how that works. For a lot of people, what they think is "good" is almost entirely depended on whether or not the animation looks awesome.

@@redx589 I dont think its the animation, i think its the filler stuff and the overall problems with bad pacing and bad directing. Those things can make o brake a story, even a story like one piece.

This is the best arc when it comes to tackling a theme. Oda goes a layer deeper here. The "nothing" scene with Hody is a very powerful one. His hatred for humans has no personal basis. Unlike Arlong who lost Fisher Tiger and had been exposed to discrimination, he has nothing. Just blind hatred. Passed down from the previous generation

I've always loved the thematic depth and symbolism of this arc, and the fishman-human conflict, in my opinion, is one of the most beautifully written conflicts I've read in fiction. Thanks for shedding light on an underrated part of One Piece, as always your videos never miss
Damn, its amazing how great your understanding of Odas writing is, his symbolism and how he implements themes. This video made me really emotional and even though I already understood most of what Oda is conveying in this arc there were still so many things I missed. You really deserve much more attention in this vast sea of growing ignorance of this fandom that thinks powerscaling and powerlevels are everything.

I always found it interesting how fish man believed that they were so much more powerful than surface dwellers in their arc when the audience knew that the SHP’s were more than enough to destroy them. It’s a sad irony for this crew. I see all of fishman island as victims really, including the NFP’s.
Hody jones is an underrated villian
he one of those villains/characters that serve his purpose well but its doesn't allow for the character to stand out that much. He needs to represent the problems of the fishman but cant have unique situation like say doffy or big mom. At least that why i dont rate him too highly.
It's sad that people don't appreciate that villians like hody (wapol/spandam) are purposefully made weak by Oda becos they're ideals/philosophy are surface level and they're determination/will is fundamentally weak compared to the top tier combative villains. They're not worthy of the spotlight, instead further showing how incredible those who aren't held down by the same thinking are, like vivi and shirahoshi.
@@ajdoku865 not to mention that as distressing as it is, hody is unfortunately one of the most realistic of one piece villains, as I have seen MANY people like him, as those who will violently rally against a system that is yet to (or may never) show them any injustice, leading harm to befall those around them
Hody is the perfect example of the modern Victimhood mentality you see these days. He'd rather perpetually remain a Victim than actually bettering himself. He remained pathetic, weak, and lazy. So powerless he needed to resort to the fake power of the pills that just left him more broken than when he started.
You're quicky becoming one of my favourite One piece/ media analysis channels. Fishman Island was honestly an arc so densely packed and slept on, I'm really grateful you covered it. Thank you.
This is an amazing analysis of the Fishman Island arc. A long-running series like One Piece with a lot of great story arcs, it's understandable why Fishman island might be overlooked. Unfortunately, this is often, rather ignorantly, conflated with poor quality. This video succinctly reflects the effort and creativity the writer dedicated to crafting this story arc and the characters therein.
Beyond crafting a deeply moving and through-provoking story arc, I was mostly impressed by how Oda managed to handle the complex subject and themes in this arc. Often where an allegorical story tackles the subjects of race, racial discrimination, racial injustices, oppression, and the consequences thereof, nuance is abandoned in favor of simplicity and narrative efficiency. However, Oda doesn't shy away from the complexity and messiness of such realities, particularly on an individual and psychological level. There is this myth often seen in some Shonen stories and other similar media, or even worse, real-life; of 'hard-cut solutions'. Where oppressive systems and/or discriminatory laws and those who may have perpetrated/enforced them are abolished or amended, there is often this expectation that all will be well, that the victims should all shut up and be grateful, and the perpetrators usually absolved. We see this through the constant reference to the end of slavery and the Jim Crow era in America, colonialism in Africa and parts of Asia, or Apartheid in South Africa. Those who point out the residual effects of these oppressive systems are often gaslit and accused of being lazy or feigning victimhood.
I love that Oda makes a point to emphasize that despite oppressive systems being officially abolished, like slavery was in One Piece, the perpetrators, or at least those who stood to gain from such systems, to begin with, will always find a way to uphold those systems or similar systems after the fact. This is because changing systems on paper does not change people. The Celestial Dragons still practice slave trade in One Piece. Racism and systemic racism still exist in the real world. Mass incarceration, for-profit prisons, and prison labor still exist in America. Economic Apartheid still exists in South Africa, etc. Even more than that, Oda explores the lasting consequences of oppressive systems on the victims. Arlong and his crew developed a warped worldview borne of their anger and hatred. Likewise, Jimbei and many of the Sun Pirates bore this burden for most of their lives. Additionally were the rest of the Fishman, particularly those of Fishman District like Hody Jones.
This is probably the only point where I would disagree with the assessment of the author of the video analysis with regards to the character of Hody Jones. There is a common misconception that the descendants of victims of oppressive systems do not suffer from these systems once they are abolished. The reality is very much the opposite. Factors such as generational trauma as seen in studies done on the descendants of Holocaust survivors and other groups reflect the lingering psychological distress inherited from the direct victims of these systems. Among other things, more often than not, the legacy of these oppressive systems often give rise to socioeconomic, psychosocial, and socio-political disadvantages that trickle down to subsequent generations. This can often have a worse psychological impact on them than it did on their predecessors. The Fishmen in the Fishmen District, who lives in this callous and harsh environment mired in violent crime and poverty among other things, a result of the Fishmen being driven to the bottom of the ocean by the humans. Arguably, these fishmen were on the brunt end of the oppressive human systems, seeing as how most of the Fishmen seen to have been slaves on Mariejois were from that district. Undoubtedly, all these conditions combined have a detrimental psychological impact on the individual Fishmen in this district. Fueling their hatred and anger and compounding on the callous and harsh environment in a vicious cycle. While Fishmen like Jimbei, Arlong, and Tiger bore anger and hatred, they were fully aware of its source and as such had a level of self and situational awareness that could allow them to curb or control this anger. Hody and his crew on the other hand grew up in the callous and harsh Fishmen District where the worst consequences of the human's oppression on the Fishmen trickled down and were felt the most. They grew up knowing suffering, fear, and anguish, something that can easily turn into anger and mental distress. However, unlike the Fishmen who were directly enslaved, and could identify the source of their anger and distress, the children of the Fishmen district could not. Their anger was nebulous and for the most part, confusing. This made it uncontrollable and chaotic. It made it nearly impossible to "move past it," because they didn't know where it came from, to begin with, so they couldn't properly rationalize or deal with it. More importantly, it made them vulnerable to negative influences. Since their anger and psychological distress were ungrounded and abstract, it only took the right person with the right words to give it direction, to gourd it into hatred...to manipulate it.
Hence I disagree with the assessment of Hody Jones's motivation or the supposed lack thereof. To say Hody had not suffered or that his hatred for humans was hollow, is to some extent, disingenuous.

Using the same long line of reasoning on justifying Hody Jones actions could apply to Eustass Kid and his crew though because nobody in his crew had people like Rayleigh, Jinbe, and Shanks to set him on a neutral or good path like Luffy, and he had to experience poverty, no family or nakama of any kind, and him being a Pirate longer than Luffy first hand experienced the prejudices, bigotry, etc etc longer than Luffy and his Pirate Crew have, so honestly if I uploaded a CZcams video using the same line of reasoning to justify Hody Jones actions I could apply the same type of reasoning to say why Eustass Kid is justified in his actions too, so I think that’s why CraftsWorld didn’t use type of reasoning on discussing Hody Jones actions because the justifications that you used to justify Hody Jones actions can also apply to Eustass Kid and his Pirate Crew.

As you said she represented the flower that ALL the Fishman needed to see. Whiel amny gave in to hatred otu of fear, defensiveness and teh past she embraced forgivness, will and bravery. Peopel say she was a cyrbaby but a try crybaby would not shelter a burden and refuse to let it spread. She was stronger then ANY Fishman seen. And by seeing that and seeing who Hody really was Fishman began to truly see within themselevs.
Also Luffys words to Fukaboshi, that they were friends was also all Fishman needed to hear. For to them there had not been a moment when someone so casually and so nicely would simply say that. Whitbeard and Neptune apperenty had but Luffys sheer selflessness showed, that the world of Humans was not an every growing Darkness. But rather a world were Light also can exist
Facing the past, overcoming the hatred and seeing more then just the madness was the true start
where Fishman Island could go toward the Sun.

Damn, the treatment of Fishmen is a lot closer to black people than I thought. Your wording hit that sharply. Some of the conclusions of the arc and the fact Fishfolk are actually genetically stronger than humans doesn't lend to that reading, but the things that are 1 to 1 are 1 to 1 in loud fashion.
I think while fishman island explores many themes such as cycle of hatred, racism, forgiveness, unity etc. I find the dark inherited will to be the most interesting as throughout the series inherited will has always been about following your dreams and achieving your own freedom. its always been seen as something good, but fishman focuses on the darker aspect of it. what is someone inherited a will that wanted nothing but chaos and destruction? what if someone inherited a will that would cause hate? thats the case with hody jones he inherited a darker will.

Your analysis on the new fishman pirates themselves alone was mind-blowing. I always understood their collective goals and empty “ideals”, but you were somehow able to conceive actual foils between them as individuals and the strawhats they faced. Another amazing vid. Wish people would put more respect on this arc. Its pretty much perfect. It's positioning after the whole summit war saga, having a lighter tone at first with some of the funniest jokes in the series, as well as beeing a full on adventure in the spirit of sky Island. Its themes the most mature and hard hitting in the series this far, and the most pronounced as well.
Made me tear up 3 times throughout the vid ... great analysis as always, literally not a single miss.

One piece is just that good
This arc is not about pondering to the shonen tropes. Its a genuine telling of a story about one of the recurring themes in the story. This is actually the best arc when it comes to tackling a theme. People love One Piece because its more than just a shounen series. And people seems to always forget that

As much as I love Craftsdwarfs views on the series its exhausting to listen to it. No pauses in his delivery nor change in the tone of his voice makes it hard to stay ingaged. Please make your thoughts more digestible. Pause from time to time to let listeners catch their breath.
Or link your script. I like your thoughts but right now I would rather read them than listen to you. Because damn you make it hard.
Edit: Like I really would like to read it man. Its nothing personal. You clearly put alot of thought into it. I just wish you would give the delivery more polish. You deliver it in a very monotone rhythm. Nothing to break up the flow. Maybe use questions. Let my brain ingage with your thoughts on the matter. Use a clearly visible structure with bulletpoints you can go further into. Giving an overview in the beginning helps.
And again. That comes not from a place of hate. You have something good to say. But please work on how you say it.

Edit 3: Ok. . . reading it, it becomes clear that some of your sentences are just to long. For example:
"Whether none decided to enter those ranks, or none was ever allowed to, along with the rarity of Fishman Island's representation at the Reverie, occurring only once around when they were first recognized as people, and again during the story itself, it all paints a telling picture of the place Fishfolk have in the world around and above them."
You have to break that one up. There is to much information in one sentence. Its hard to digest. You want your information to get to your listener. Not overwhelm them. You dont use sentences like this in speeches or videos for that matter. You have to do some really good flowing voicedelivery to bring that sentence home. Keep it simpler. Not dumb simple. . . but simpler.
The blacks in America today are literally bunch of Hordy jones. Expect for me who acutely came from Africa 😂
The way you coldly analyze One Piece makes me think the series would be better this way than the way it is now, geared for kids and overly emotional, all this analysis gets lost in how it's framed and it's really too bad
