White Guys Bargain in Perfect Mandarin at Chinese Market, Amaze Vendors

- My friend Evan and I, two white guys who speak extremely good Mandarin, some Cantonese, and a little bit of Fuzhounese, went bargain hunting and haggling at the dry goods and vegetable markets of NYC Chinatown. A veritable market spree! We walked up to various Chinese vendors, started speaking with them in English, and then switched over mid-conversation to Mandarin and Cantonese (and Fuzhounese once or twice!). Their reactions were hilarious! Hope you enjoy this day in our lives! And hopefully this is helpful to you guys in your language learning journeys!

It must be really sad living in a country where you can economically prosper, but your scope of who you can communicate with is so limited. When they hear them speaking, it instantly opens up that scope and is an absolute breath of fresh air, as many of them feel trapped socially.

I love this! When I was younger, I used to go to Tokyo with some friends and we'd do something similar. I've been to China and it's a very hard language to learn. The intonation is very different and difficult. You all did great and it was a joy to see you speak. You're nice folks and help bridge the foreigner gap. BTW, the way to bargain in China is find out the price, offer half, and walk out. Most shops sell the same thing. If one vendor doesn't meet your price, walk out and go to the next. Most times they will follow you out and offer a reduced price. You'll get an idea of how much they can sell something for and can adjust your offer accordingly. I got tired of negotiating so I'd offer a price, then walk out. Much faster and easier than all the bickering. My husband, who works in China tells the store employee how great it is to see them again, and glad that they remember him. Then he says he wants the same thing again for the same price. No employee will admit they don't know or remember him so they will say yes. Then hubby buys the item with very little negotiation. He does have a general idea of what things go for though, so he's not low balling them. He's just getting a regular price offered to locals (they will quote higher for foreigners).

“Extremely, insufferably warm” might be one of the funniest unintentional Bomb ever
I love how people light up when you speak their dialect. Love the vids!
It's so heartwarming to see the happy reactions of the locals when you guys start speaking Chinese, I can only imagine how difficult it must be for them to get by with broken English so I'm sure they appreciate someone that's able to speak their native language with them 😆
When asked if you speak Chinese always reply "I'm sorry I don't speak Chinese..." In Chinese.
I can do that in French. They say my accent sounds like native French person but I can only say a few things lol
Try that in Spanish and they will immediately start in on the most backwoods rancho Spanish going a mile a minute as if you were just being modest. (in southern California)
@@shane8037 - Confirmed, i'm from soCal lol
well I can do that in Russian lmao
But that's just what you do when you legit can't speak the language...
You just memorise a few key things like the equivalent of: "yes", "no", "no english", "thank you".
When they speak English: 🙂
When they go fluent Chinese: 🥳

Going somewhere as a stranger and talking to people with their local language will make a closer connected relationship..i can feel the excitement of the native people in video when they heard the stranger spoke with their language
It's great to see people from different cultures get on like old friends ❤
When she says take a seat he still stands like give me more compliment
