White Guys Surprise Locals with Rare Chinese Dialect, They are Stunned

- Me and my Chinese-speaking white friends went to Brooklyn Chinatown to practice our Mandarin, Cantonese, and the rare dialect of Fuzhounese (also known as Fuzhou dialect or Hokchew / Hock Chew), which people speak in this part of Brooklyn. We got lots of smiles and laughs and funny reactions and it turned into a really fun day! It’s always nice to make connections with people using language skills. An inspiring video for people looking to learn languages, I hope!

@@alexliu5806 No...it's less about broadening your horizons and more about respect, especially with google translations getting better. This is a lesson to everyone learning a second language: don't be afraid to make mistakes. Most people will appreciate that you're trying to learn by speaking to them in their language.
Except the French
Americans get offended and act like jerks for the most part if they notice you attempting to speak their language. It happened a lot to me that I got a little discouraged to be honest.
@@Chris00792 I have to agree. English speakers and the French seem to be the biggest assholes when it comes to trying to practice with them.
Depends where you are in France. Cities and tourist places, yeah, they tend to be very snobby, but if you go off the beaten path, people tend to be much better about it.

Night Hawk thanks for the tip buddy
Learning Chinese can be fun if you are really game for it. Living in SE Asia makes most non-Chinese being able to speak a smattering of Southern dialects like Guandonghua (Cantonese - spoken in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur) and Fujianhua (Fukienese - spoken in Manila, Singapore and Medan). But nowadays, many can even sing in Putonghua (Mandarin - thanks to videos and karaoke). Best regards.
You guys make me want to slap some body

learn abt radicals, tones, pinyin and stroke order and it becomes REALLY fun to learn/ kind of easier

Seeing the sheer joy on the people's faces you touched really moved me. You are truly goodwill ambassadors for the US. Just watching this video made my day, in some small measure giving me hope for the future.
i agree
“The younger generation only want to speak English” so sad but true for so many cultures. I think all people who migrate to different countries really risk loosing their mother tongue down the line... nothing we can do
In amerika so many people don't speak English, that absolutely ridiculous.
As someone who is half Filipino I wish I had been taught Tagalog. Maybe in the future when I can pay someone to teach me to speak it fluently. No one in my family speaks it. I also attempted Korean for 6 years but no one to practice the language.
It was the same for us when we immigrated from Germany but you regain your interest in your mother tongue as you get older. Its the job of the parents to keep speaking to the kids in the mother tongue.
seventhseance I can teach you haha. It’s common for Filipino parents to not teach their children Tagalog once they migrate. I got lucky since my parents taught me
Maureen-Paul Barnes-von Kulmiz you’re 100% right it’s the parents responsibility
If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.
Nelson Mandela
Milton Holley it would be nice if you followed up your an opinion with some sort of facts to substantiate a claim. I don’t know a whole lot about Nelson Mandela but to empathize with your point I have found mother Theresa to be quite a disgusting human being after reading several of her novels. So I don’t assume he is an entirely good person. The message is what I was sharing. Not an opinion on what I thought about his character. Mother Theresa had a lot of wise sayings but I don’t think much of her as a person. Hopefully this doesn’t sound like an ego thing on my part. But if you don’t understand the message just ask for clarification next time and I’m sure plenty of people would be happy to help you understand the message.
Milton Holley I appreciate you bringing to my attention what type of person he is. But on the other hand that’s not what this discussion is about. It’s simply about connecting with humans. And investing your own time to learn their native tongue and employ it shows a huge sign of respect and in turn they are very gracious to acknowledge that. So I do appreciate you showing me my ignorance. I just just didn’t want to go down this road in the first place. My use of his words had nothing to do with Nelson Mandela but about humans in general. If I can’t get this through than I don’t know what to tell you. But I appreciate your reply.
Yeah... No one cares..
@Milton Holley -Never apologize for telling the truth. Especially when it shows a monster in their true form.

Wh-
Chinese is much more complex than English, to understand this, you need to know mandarin.
@@56588 is it really? English seems so difficult because of the arbitrary laws. Tough thought thorough rough, all have different pronunciations
@@realeyesrealisereallies97 Well, I would claim that those arbitrary laws aren't too hard to learn. I know how to pronounce tough, thought etc. without ever actively trying to learn it. I just watched movies and videos in english and "accidentally" picked it up.
Mandarin on the other hand has a completely different way of saying things (syntax), difficult pronounciation and intonation that could easily lead to misunderstanding and possibly the most complex writing system there is.
Though, you could argue that mandarin might be easier than english if your native language is already a language "close" to mandarin.
So what do I know.
@@d5555 Different languages are harder to learn due to what the person has learned already. For example, a person that speaks Mandarin will think that English is the hardest language to learn due to arbitrary laws, but a person that speaks English will believe that Mandarin is the hardest because of their "bizarre" writing structure and pronunciation.
@@realeyesrealisereallies97 English is the easiest language to learn, that's why it's so popular. It's not even my first language... and here we are.

Motivation and dedication is probably the biggest issues people have when learning a language.
1. It's far from easy and is going to be very challenging.
2. You are going to want to give up at times or get distracted by other things
3. Practice makes perfect.
I recommend books, free videos, and then when you become comfortable with the basics, invest in a more adept program that usually cost money
