White Guys Prank Chinese People with Perfect Mandarin

  • We did a fun social experiment / prank where me and two of my white American friends who also speak fluent Mandarin Chinese and some Cantonese (and Spanish!) pretended not to be able to speak English with people in NYC’s Brooklyn Chinatown - and then switched over to perfect Chinese! It was a really fun day and we made lots of awesome connections with people, had lots of great Chinese food, and of course got plenty of funny reactions. Hopefully this can inspire some of you to try and learn other languages!
Make sure to subscribe and come back for Part 2 in this language learning / prank series next time!

@@claradreams1923 It is in the US. Most people only speak English and many speak only Spanish. Globally, yeah, many people speak 2 or more languages, but let's not pretend everyone does.
For example, my husband is fluent in English, German, and French, and can speak conversational Russian and Spanish. He's currently learning to speak Mandarin.
I, on the other hand, have a really difficult time learning other languages. I took Spanish in high school and dated a Mexican American man for 2 years. Some of his family barely spoke any English, so they were always trying to hold a conversation with me in Spanish, but my brain just couldn't absorb it, for some reason.
I also have tried to learn Norwegian on and off, as it's my grandma's native tongue. I understand a few phrases here and there, but I...just suck.

I think it's really cool to speak many languages, but it's not really being super intelligent or super "cultured". Anyone can do it. Today, almost everyone who is not english/american has to learn english. So it's already 2 langages, + the third language we have to learn at school (in France it's german, spanish or italian most of the time). + a lots of people in France have at least 1 parent who speaks another language and they learn it at home... I don't think anyone is "bad" at learning new languages. If you take the time to practice, you get better. If you really want to learn spanish you can, it just takes many years to get reaaally good. I feel like some people think it's very rare so they feel like they can't do it, but it's sad, because it's not true ! Anyone can😊

Find an immigrant community by you. Talking to people really helps as much as if not more than school. I think you'll also find that you don't need to be that good to start using it in public. At first, you're kind of playing this game of charades with others but your brain quickly notices the patterns and you can at least develop a very basic understanding of what's being said. Then, some sort of formal training (even as simply as Duolingo) will push you to be more conversational. It's a very big commitment but is SO worth it in my opinion.

TheTaterTotP80 yeah but we should not be pretending it were the same thing to learn English or to learn Chinese. Chinese even for people with a talent for languages is HARDER than English. The different vowels and sounds take a lot of effort and talent to perfect.

But no, not everything is just spanish and Filipino words, what makes Tagalog interesting is that it has mixes of Chinese, Bahasa Indonesia, and other countries that are enclose in South East Asia.
