- The other day we went out to get a haircut in NYC’s Chinatown at one of its amazing barber shops. We totally shocked the entire barber shop with our Mandarin and Cantonese! A very funny prank and social experiment but also just a great time in general. Wishing everybody luck in their journey to learn languages, whether that’s Chinese, Korean, Hindi, Spanish, or whatever!

The great Fluency aside, Xiao Ma’s selling point is also his good social skills. He’s very natural around strangers, and is able to get people to open up and warm up to him, and that is actually the more difficult skill to learn IMO
It's funny because he seems way more awkward when speaking English than when he's speaking Mandarin

I liked the poker-faced barber. He never flinched when they changed to Mandarin. He should definitively be a pro poker player.

That lady in purple saying that guy has a mindset of someone who will never improve is awesome
American Born ok??? Lmfao
American Born Sure, that’s true...but then rather than make excuses (“well, they’re only good because they just hang around Chinatown all day, but I have a job”), he should just say he doesn’t want to learn. Instead, he wants to act like it’s everything else’s fault instead of his. That’s the mindset of someone who will never improve. In order to improve, you have to (1) want to improve, (2) take ownership of your improvement and (3) don’t let inconveniences stand in your way.
lunelilyonrunescape 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Well said!
Your hair is perfect
that guys is the typical of "cannot swim then blame on his underwear was wet"
At 5:52, the man cutting his hair suggests that he go to Guangzhou to "look to eat." In Cantonese, "looking to eat," doesn't necessarily mean food literally, it's often an expression for looking for work, or looking for a source of income. So he might have been suggesting that they find a job in Guangzhou with their language skills.
Ah,搵食,right?
I got the impression that he meant something else when he said they could "have a good time" in southern China. I'm guessing he meant to impress some local ladies there closer to their own age, although I don't think these two handsome fellas have any interest in that.
@@ParadigmUnkn0wn The guy getting the haircut is straight and married to a Chinese woman. The other guy is as gay as a San Francisco bath house.
It means "make a living". Other Asian languages use the same expression like Vietnamese which is "lam ang" (lam means make and ang means eat). Hell, even ebonics has a similar expression "make some bread".
@@themanwhosoldtheworld5350 "Made some bread" isn't ebonics. Bread was used as a word to mean money by beatniks back in the fifties.
I love the back & forth between the older lady and the second barber. It was hilarious seeing them throw friendly jabs at each other. ""You have no shame. This is why you'll never improve. (both smile & laugh)"
Bet when the Barber realized they could speak Chinese, I bet he was thinking... Thank God I didn't talk any smack about these guys yet.
yet.........hahahaha
i was wondering if at first he might've been thinking, either: "am i just imagining this..." or, "wow, i really have become pretty good at picking-up on even the most 'nuanced' English..." ({; D ...!
😁
LOLOL
😂
I like how the barber didn't even react when they started speaking lol
I think it took a while to connect they even changed languages becasue he speaks both languages and his brain took a while to catch up lol
He was also focused on blending the sides.
Maybe he has seen their other videos & knew he was being pranked. I notice a lot of people they meet have seen the vids but somehow didn't recognize them.
Thats how you know its a good barber when they focus on the blending over a conversation.
He was probably confused lol.
At 5:52 the barber was actually complimenting you for the fact that you can speak Cantonese.
We he said “get some food” I think he actually meant “you are successful now” or “you’ve found a way to make a good living”.
lol he meant he can score and get laid my dude. If you didn't figure that out, you still need to learn the ropes ^^

@@Demonhunte yo, Chinese here, originally from GuangDong ZhongShan and I have a Cantonese lesson for you.

Sunshine Soul Tarot On me
It's kind of stupid . There are some poor Chinese who never learn Mandarin slash Beijing dialect very well, so it is not too crazy that they speak official Mandarin better
The guy cutting his hair was straight up not fazed when they started speaking Chinese. He just kept on buzzing with the clippers and didn’t miss a beat. He’s a straight up boss 🤣 but that roast from the guy that “has a job” stole the show 👍

@Atheist Biologist thanks, I've worked with many different cultures and their conversation seemed very native in tone and structure, but if I move to new york for a year and then back to oregon people will be looking for the snakes I'm supposed to be handling to go with the words comin outta my mouth...but I was just going to say that if they had accepted those compliments and handled that one conversation any other way his haircut would have only been half done and an even stonier face from the barber demanding full payment and the face also says gtfo and don't come back, ever. But you also have to be willing to have your pants pulled down while everyone laughs and be cool about it if you want to hang, which they also did and participated in (blew my mind, some of that I wouldn't have got away with, even knowing the language). There are a few cultures that are MASTERS of hazing for social groupings lol and China is def one of them

@Tech Guru413 It was just a play on words, you said dog meat festival, "Best in show" is a term in dog shows, chow is a breed of dog..also a term for eating.. get it?
Great haircut! I prefer to watch your CZcams Channel to anything else on CZcams, TV, Cable, Community Theater, Movies, Standup, Voices in my head, etc. Keep up the great work!
That cute moment at the end where Gavin goes to hold his hand 😩😩 he blushed so hard after he pulled away... CUTE
for some reason, i think the barber meant something else when he said “fun in southern china” 😏
For sure lol
These two american are gays
MoveOn lol , yeah but we can guess which of these two spend more time in the poo poo platter 🤣
"Yeah, you'd get some good dim sum..."
He definitely did but realised there was a minor sitting in the other chair lol
She called them “foreigners” and they’re in NYC 🤣 loved that. Edit-thanks for so many likes! ❤️
LoL Just thought about that... "You Foreigners speak better chinese than we do" hahhahahah
In Asia, "foreigners" has a different context. Basically it means "not Asian" or the equivalent of "westerners". It's not tied to current geographic location.
They made her feel like home
Michael
Yeah that’s on point at least at south east asian countries
Bloody gaijin
I want that plaid shirt the guy was wearing when he was cutting your hair. That was a great plaid color! LOL!! And that guy definitely rocked your haircut! It’s a perfect cut for your head shape. The back and forth between the others breaking stones about not knowing enough English was hilarious. Dragging you guys into the mix was perfect, lol.
Bro look at you with your own commercial!!!!! Congratulations on your success Xiaoma!!! Love your video's!!! Keep up the good work!!!!
When the hairdresser said "finding stuff to eat" pretty sure he meant "to earn a living" it's a saying we have in Hong Kong lol
Tiger_vii lol
Nah dude, he meant get pussy. I don't need to know Chinese to understand what he meant.
How you didn't get that is beyond me
@@EikottXD you mean I don't get to eat that??? Hahahaha
@@EikottXD Hold on.... it does mean to earn a living. Its a phrase in cantonese. Its just that most of us are rushing to pay for crazy flat prices and stuff we have no time to even bother abt eating *****.

Oh man, "we rely on our hands for a living, no need to be suprt chatty"
That makes me think they really enjoy having a conversation with anybody, it makes them feel alive in a foreing country
This is why i like watching your videos, i like watching people smile
"we rely on our hands for a living" makes me think they give a lot of happy endings
I enjoy watching your vids, new subscriber as of today, I love the way you make people smile when you speak their language

Haircut looks great.
I have watched your videos for awhile now, and finally know what your Chinese name means and where it came from!!!
Good stuff! I'm hungry now!
