Last month my Indonesian friend Abe challenged me to learn Indonesian in three weeks and then go to NYC’s very own Indonesian Food Bazaar market for me to practice my Indonesian. I took him up on this challenge and it was an epic social experiment! We also went around ordering in Indonesian restaurants in Elmhurst, Queens which has a large Indonesian population in New York City. I definitely do not actually speak fluently but I’m able to have a real conversation in Indonesian after just 15 hours of studying, which is pretty cool!

    For anyone who is an English speaker, I think that Indonesian is one of the easier languages to learn.
    The grammar is very straightforward. . There are no tenses (past/present/future) that complicate words.
    It uses the 'English' letters to write. . . So it's easy to read (unlike, say Chinese or Thai for example)
    The plural of a word is . . say it twice. . . One child = "anak". . . More than one child ("Children") = anak-anak.
    To stress a word. . again, say it twice.. . . "fast"= "Chapat". . . "VERY fast"= "Chapat-chapat"
    Morning= "Pagi". . . Early in the morning = "Pagi-pagi"
    The pronounciation rules, once you learn them, are VERY simple . . . VERY simple. . .
    And it doesn't take long to get used to the 'reversal' of adjective/noun. . . For example, in English we say the adjective first and then the noun e.g. RED car
    In Indonesian, that is reversed. . . CAR red ("MOBIL merah"). . . "ORANG gemuk" = MAN fat (ORANG means man and Gemuk means fat)
    If you get a chance, try to learn Indonesian. .

    • @kneticnrg
      @kneticnrg Před 2 lety +30

      Fast is actually Cepat not chapat. We dont have multiple sounds for letters in Indonesia. C will always be a ch sound, never a k sound so there is not a single Indonesian word that is spelled with ch.

      In general, if you are comparing with American fast food, yes Indonesian food can be considered healthier, in the sense that it is real food and not junk food.
      But there is also a famous specialty group of food called Nasi Padang/ Makanan Padang. Those Padang foods contain a lot of fats but it's freakingly delicious (those that are not healthy tends to be delicious 🙃).
      In addition of being healthy in terms of nutrition, it should serve as a disclaimer for foreigner.. the food especially food street (anything other than renowed restaurant), tend to be not as hygienic as foods served in US. Thus a lot of newcomers tend to have stomachache because of hygiene issue. But for locals it rarely happened because our stomach just already accustomed to it

    • @dispiedark8682
      @dispiedark8682 Před 3 lety +5

      Most food is better than American food, better said western food, because the US is not the only one with big industrie fucking up there food by putting sugar/concentrated sugar in everything and to much Salt. Its sugar that makes people FAT. if you look at the amount of sugar consumption a year and how that went from just 2-4 kilo a year p.p. ca 50-60 years ago to 30-50 kilo a year p.p. in 2018 for western people the US is one of the worse countries in that aspect. And when you put the overweight/diabetes charts next to that you see the same line progression. Most people already consume 4 kilo of sugar per year, just by drinking cola these days.
      The fat is bad myth, has been busted for 15 years now, as being total bullshit: But the industrie still tries and make you think fat is worse than sugar.
      There bad fats but the way padang is slow cooked and mostly fat that is released for the meat itself and the herbs, makes it a very healthy way to eat fats, there almost no added fat or oils.
      But here the down side most Padang dishes your right about that there really nice, So you always overeat and we western people never really eat it in traditional way. so we pick the worse things and eat a lot of it instead of small portions off different dishes like they do themselves.
      That a good disclaimer, it's not just there hygiene, or that it's literally on the street. It's mostly there drinking water sources, never ever drink water from a tap in Asia or any non western country and even in EU you can't drink tap everywhere without getting the fast shits. So yeah if you plan on eating street food in other countries be prepared to have issues and take stomach and diarrhea medications with you.

    Wow! That was really great for 15 hours of learning. A little tips to talk like local: be careful of using "kamu (you)" sometimes it can be rude in the first met, especially when you talk to someone who are older than you. You can use "kamu" when you talk to someone at your age, or younger. FYI, Indonesian has some kind stages of language in terms of manners. There are 3 type of saying "you"; kamu, Anda (formal way), or calling by his/her respected calls (ibu/bapak/kakak/mbak/mas/abang). If you don't know how old are they, it's better to say "kakak(sis/bro)", "ibu (mam)", or "pak (sir)", rather than "kamu". E.g: if you want to ask which one they were prefer, you can say "kalau ibu (mam) sukanya yang mana?" or "kakak suka yang mana?" It's more polite in casual talk for the first met. Sorry if my english little bit confusing, I hope this can help. 😄

      That man said he's from Fujian. He didn't explained which part of Fujian he came from. Fuzhou is the capital of Fujian, but there are lot of big cities in Fujian. Most Indonesian Fujianese came from southern part of Fujian, so I doubt his ancestor came from Fuzhou. There are many languages and dialects in Fujian. Fuzhounese (Fuzhou dialect) is belong to Mindong (Eastern Min) language family. Majority of ancestors of Indonesian Fujianese either speak Xiamenese, Quanzhounese or Zhangzhounese. Those 3 dialects belongs to MInnan (Southern Min) language family which are very different compared to Fuzhounese. Among Indonesian Fujianese, there are small number of people who speak Fuqingnese. Fuqingnese is belong to Mindong (Eastern Min) so it;s related to Fuzhou dialect, but It is not completely mutually intelligible with Fuzhou dialect.

      His Indonesian is very rudimentary (I learned a little myself, because my girlfriend is Indonesian). I also have a feeling, that many other Languages he has attempted to speak weren’t that great either. He often repeats a lot and uses a very limited vocabulary. His Chinese and Spanish are quite good, you can read the subtitles and see that he uses a much larger vocabulary.
      Mostly though, this guy just looks like a poser. He wastes people’s time by asking them stupid question in English to then „stun them with his magical language abilities“.
