  • Here I discuss the different ideas I tested for protecting the surface of the water terrain pieces, including paper coverings, polyurethane gloss coatings, and more . I also discuss some different materials that can be used for water movement effects, such as waves and ripples.
The first upload of this video had an error in it so I have re-uploaded it with the proper editing in place.
Thank you to everyone who submitted ideas on the problem with the mod podge!

Water effects can be such a pain! Way to stick with it though. Your methodical approach with figuring out what is going on is very insightful. Thanks for sharing your results with us!

The clouding issue intrigued me. In my spare time at work the last few months, I've been working on a polyurethane prepolymer to be used in a moisture cure urethane coating that should eliminate the clouding issue. I dont have all of the products you display, so I can't say for sure what they are formulated from, but anything acrylic, or water based, can be somewhat susceptible to moisture attack, creating issues such as the clouding, or delaminating. My project is still several months away

I have the base formulation to start with. (It's based off one we use it for a roof coating, so you can be assured of the materials strength and damage resistance). I'm trying different additives to manipulate the final products plasticity and viscosity so that it isn't too self leveling and can be molded into waves. The material will not be as chemically safe as an acrylic product, there will be some VOC's in it as well. But I hope to produce something that will at the least perform

I thought about the fact that all paper has teeth and might cloud the river pieces too late to mail you back. I like that persons suggestion. Hope it works for you.

Have you tried using clear caulk for water effects? Once again very informative thanks for sharing.

comparatively and will resist scratching, and fingernail denting, as well as remain optically clear, glossy, and cloudyness free. Again, I'm still many months from a final product. I have been working on it in my spare time at work with materials I can reasonably acquire from my employer. I hope to have something soon that I can offer to you for free to field test and see what you think.

I just saw this video and was about to suggest what you did to ship you product. can you clean your brushes with water after using polyurethane gloss coatings. I Just subscribed to your channel. I have a On30 layout that is 1/48 scale. My layout is fantasy mixed with all kinds of thing including D&D . your skills are amazing.

Seems to be a sweaky audio issue with the video.

What material do you use to hold in the water? Is it clay? (under the fine turf grass material).

    • @Terranscapes

No, in these pieces, it is just the urethane plastic cast and then painted over. I don't need a dam for the water if I pour a very shallow layer. :)

Sie brauchen, um flache gießt machen . Es kann lange dauern, zu klären, für dicke Schichten . (Google Translate hat mir geholfen, diese zu beantworten. * grins *)
