  • Inspired by a Japanese TV show, I explore some new materials for modeling water effects on terrain. I also show a recent set of ocean boards completed with previous techniques but some additional effects added.

    Really enjoy your videos... Some model railroad scenery specialists use similar water techniques. One thing a few of them do is apply an acrylic high gloss furniture varnish as a final coat(s) to create a hard, high gloss and more durable surface to the water.

    I pour my tinted hard resin water effects first, and then layer crystal clear silicone over the top, works well. Instead of brushing the silicone on, spread it out using your finger in a circular motion, starting at one end and moving to the other, using tighter circles where the water is more shallow. I tend to get good results that way, no streaking. Wave crests though? That is trickier, the silicone tends to self-level before it manages to set. Might try the paint method..

    I'm not familiar with the show you reference but many years ago I learned a little about the Japanese art of Bonkei. If you aren't familiar with it, it uses peat moss or paper mache to make miniature landscapes and the water is created with sand and smoothed with water that is then siphoned off. Great videos BTW.

  • @CatachanNight
    @CatachanNight Před 7 lety

    Woah, you're really good at it. In the future, you may want to experiment with shorelines. Sandy shores usually have a strip of darker wet sand where the waves crash on land. A pebble beach, or waves crashing on cliffs may also prove worthwhile to try out on small scale to see what product is best to achieve which water effect, as I suspect you sometimes could want to work with different materials to see how to combine different effects on the same water game board.

    If you type in Plamo Tsukurou episode 10 part 1 to the youtube search it will come up as the first two videos uploaded by jiscuit. try warming silicone before use in a bay-marie (some experimentation for temp), warming viscos liquids sometimes helps them flow better and may give a little more working time, may also help when making moulds.

      @Terranscapes  Před 9 lety

      thuggie1 It occurs to me that I should have thought about it a minute longer. No one does it in silicone because you can't paint it. This is why they use latex or a urethane rubber. Latex is the choice since it is low cost and doesn't easily hold a memory of being rolled up. You can paint silicone technically, but you need special silicone paints which are quite expensive.

    As for Edges matching. I would prolly try to tie all boards together (or at least two nearest) pour "water" in, split with knife / saw gently later. Not sure about this "water" but with other materials it worked, u need to be careful when splitting. it may work or not depending on how this material flows and overlaps ...:)

    smooth-on makes many different types of silicones with just about any curing time you could want as well as different hardness. The great thing about silicone is that you can paint it in many layers getting great depth. You should be using something like silc pig or psycho paints made especially for silicone and should be airbrushing your paint on to get maximum use of silicone.

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  Před 9 lety +1

    hey, just wondering if you've tried a layer of liquitex with silicone over the top for the wave crests? you could dremel crosshatch over the top of the dried liquited just where you want a wave so the silicone has something to stick into? then you could possibly build the silicone over top the liquitex. i'm sure you've done everything i've thought of and more. I love your stuff, i wish i had even some of the skill you demonstrate!

    • @Terranscapes

    • @japangrl
      @japangrl Před 7 lety

      might be super difficult to cover up a cross hatching with a silicone, since both are clear and it might show through, but if you carved a more organic texture into the the liquitex, it might work.

    @readhistory2023 Před 8 lety

    Have you used a rubber/plastic spatula as a tool to push the material? A carved foam brush might work too. The reg. brush doesn't seem to work at all, too many brush lines. Have you tried extenders? They make them for latex and acrylic paints. It should work. The other idea I had was to use air. Either hot or air brush to push it around. No brush strokes that way.

      I used epoxy resin for the bulk of the depth (Klear Kote) and then used a custom mold to cast the waves, in Klear Kote again. Would you be able to tell me, did you have a problem with things sticking to and adhering to the silicone on your test pieces? I am trying to make an ocean board for a naval game and I love the ripple effects of the boards you made. I am worried that the liquitex product would be a little pricey for a 4x8 board. Thoughts or suggestions? Thank you!

      I ended up going with silicone. I used: www.liquidnails.com/products/clear-seal-all-purpose-sealant I mixed in mineral spirits to thin it so I could work it and used a much thicker mix with snow to make the 'fluffy' surf breaking effects. I will say I went through a lot of those tubes, and a lot of ventilation is needed if you thin it with mineral spirits. You can see how I used it in my ocean boards playlist. If I had a tip today, I think I wouldn't have thinned it down quite as much. I hope that helps a little. :)

    what if you did the water with liquitex and did the wave breaks with silicone? How does silicone bond to liquitex?

      +M.R. Hawks I'm not sure it would work. Nothing bonds well to silicone, except silicone. :)

    I'm saddened to see that your store is temporarily closed. Why is that? I actually am heavily considering getting one or two of the unfinished casts at some point to add to my board. I really want to get those dragon's teeth tank traps for my Chaos army! I think they would look VERY cool if I added some extra Chaos style elements as well as painting it in a Chaos style to make a really nice addition to my board until I start building more of my own stuff.
    Hopefully you reopen the store! I really love your stuff. Great work!

      I think the traps would look very good with Chaos. :) The store does not open very often as I am constantly flooded with more work than I can handle. However, I will be opening it on Jan 28th. :) I have created a mailing list so people can be notified of openings. You can find the subscription link on the front page of the site or go it directly at this link:
      terranscapes.hosted.phplist.com/lists/
      You should look at the Newsletter page linked off the main page of the site for more information on store openings.
      You can email me anytime if you have any other questions. :)

      Excellent! I actually had kind of assumed that being one person it must take a lot of time fulfilling all the requests you must get - I will definitely be looking into that. I should've read more on the site but ended up being so inspired to get back to work on some of my own terrain pieces that I got my Dad to dig through their storage and bring over a box I had of materials that I haven't used for a couple years now.
      It's always nice to have a parent with excessive storage space when you're going between different apartments :P
      I look forward to the store opening though! I will definitely be showing the many 40K players I know your site as well in case they are in need of sprucing up their personal tables.
      Keep up the great work in the meantime! :)

    I don't know if you tried it already..but why not combine/mix silicone and your normal water? A layer of your water, over that the waves out of silicone and to create a nice transition and water surface again your normal water?!

    Hey Mike,
    I believe I found the same modeler working on a different project. It may be a different "dioramist", but anyone interested can watch the video here: /watch?v=hKk-VNAuXxo
    As for the soft flake snow, it could be glass powder. They show a close up of the product in the video. Maybe it sparkles and creates something similar to how droplets refract light--I can't really say, but that would be very much "God is in the details". Hope this helps.
