    Ive done abit of waterwork myself and Ive found that a good way to get vegetation to show through is applying the vegetation ontop of the dark bottom layer so the only water that is actually covering the plants is the brighter top layers. And dont worry about making the initial water plants too tall. In most cases you can cut down the plants to go flush with the surface before the final coat and it wont show through that you cheated. Small clump folliage works great in my experience.

    Man I love your videos. You are one talented fella! I will certainly be using these videos as inspiration for my own custom boards (since I really don't have the money to buy premade ones... however I am going to check your site to see what kind of stuff is available). I am a huge fan of doing terrain pieces myself. I have just started playing Warhammer 40K and love to customize everything I can as I really like to have my own flavour added to things I make/paint so I will also be making my own boards as well. I plan on making at least two - one extremely realistic beautiful looking plains + river with one side incorporating a forest edge for one of the teams to start at; which I expect to be very cool if I am ever playing against Eldar or Imperial Guard.
    I love this stuff though; wonderful, wonderful work. I am going to be watching your Ocean Board video next; I am really excited to see that!

    A thought on underwater plants. Have you tried making wire seaweed that is rigid and sticking up from the bottom of the water? Not breaking the surface, but coming close to it. I imagine you might have to contend with some bubbles around them, but since you're pouring thin layers you can probably get rid of them with a toothpick.

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  Před 9 lety

      Actually I hadn't considered that. :) It's a neat idea. The challenge with that process would be the time to make the plants, but it is worth considering since it would allow for more control over the form and shape of the plants. Hmm... I'll have to consider that for the next project. Thanks.

    very nice work on both the shore board and the bridges.
    just an idea: would it help to color the water vegetation with some very bright colors first? the dark deep water would dull down the brightness but still show the vegetation in the deep??

    How did you get the waves so realistic? I have looked att all your videos but cant find anything on how you make the waves. Do you ster the resin just before it hardens or how do you do it and with what kind of tool?

  • @montecarlo712
    @montecarlo712 Před 12 lety

    looks great buddy! i really enjoyed this build. You're right, water vegetation is hard to include. Sometimes you can get away with surface string algae near the shoreline (like the lily pads) but that usually ends up leaving the water look dirty, lol. Anyway, what do you use to tint the resin? and did you call it "KlearCoat"?

    Love the sand on the shore board. How did you do it? Was it paint, sand, flock or combinations of them?

    What are you refering to when you say you used mod podge to create the suface texture?

    I saw this thing and I thought of a few possibilities, such as a pier, a stronghold that protects a certain area by the sea, or even a small town or fisher village. What you think of this as an idea? :D

    Do you have a video on how you keep the epoxy from going over the edges of the board? could you give me an idea on how to keep it on top of a 5" diameter circle made out of mdf board??

      I build a dam for deeper pours, and for very shallow pours, just don't pour enough to drip over. :) I can't remember for sure, but I think one of my ocean board videos talks a little about creating the dam for sides. I might not have gone into detail however, so perhaps down the road I will revisit it.
      For some ideas on dams for pours, visit the Hirst Arts website and check out his Tips and Tricks page. He explains a good method on his dungeon build.
      Hope that helps a little. :)

    You got a really excellent surface texture on the water, did you use 5-min epoxy to accomplish that? I think that all of the pieces look great! 8-)

    Try making something placed in the pacific, or a similar environment.
    I mean, then you can make the water a bit brighter, since it's more shallow with coral reefs and stuff like that.
    Think Wake Island ;)

  • @SpookyGroovyPolitoCatMum

    something to keep in mind if you want to show vegitation in the water is that water is NOT BULE.
    It's what ever color the ground and sky are. If you stop darling the bottom to what you think it should be and lessen the tinting and bottom color and let the depth speak for itself you should have more realistic result... btw... your river design look very familiar...
