  • I discuss one final set of experiments to determine the relatively hardness of LIquitex Gloss Gel for water effects. Testing includes mixes with Liquitex gloss varnish as well.

    very nice to see how thorough you conduct the experiments and comparisons; save the rest of us a lot of time not having to repeat it all over again ;)
    very nice and usefull vids on the water effects, thx ;)

    thank you very much, I can say for sure that as a person who just started a couple of weeks ago diving into the miniatures world, and wanting and planning to also make an awesome table, I'll be looking for as much information as possible and your work is definitely amazing and I could learn a lot from :)

    I'm very new to this world, just been painting figures within the past few months and I've been looking into making nifty terrains. That said, your videos are grand! You're well spoken and very informative. I'll be going through your channel with vigor.

    thank you for the detailed and informative comment and thought of the liquid gel, from what you've shown it's a great material for water effects, it'll be a real treat to see a good tutorial from you on the process from start to finish if you could do one like on your next piece of water terrain :)

    Calculations are correct (provided that the boat has a flat base and its mass is equally distributed)
    For an approach that simulates reality you should assume an average peak density (peaks/in^2) and then consider a "fake" pressure calculated as oz/peaks. This still assumes that the object has a flat base.
    For something with a rim (like the GW paint pot) you should take as a footprint the area of the actual rim and not the whole base.
    Yeah I'm a sad engeneer wannabe and I know it :P

    @Terranscapes I have used Liquitex medium gloss gel on top of Woodland scenids realistic water, but the medium gloss gel (2 days after I applied it) had a very white effect, unlike in your videos where it is very transparent. I am a little dissapointed because I was going for a transparent look. I didnt put too big of a layer of it so I really dont know why it stayed so white. Do you have any idea why this happed?

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  Před 9 lety

      The layer may be too thick, but I would expect it to clear over time. Thicker layers can take quite a while. If it is too thick however it may never clear. Also, if the realistic water has some water (or what ever acrylic medium it uses as a solvent) it may add to the time to clear. I think the thickest I would go with the gel would be 1/8" or so.
      You might try placing it somewhere warm for a couple of days and see how it looks then. If your area has very high humidity, that can also add to the haziness. When the humidity drops it will clear up again.
      Now saying all of that, I have never applied the gel over Realistic Water, so I can't be 100% sure on this, but I suspect I'm probably accurate. I hope some of this helps. :)

    Have you used Golden Medium Gel(or heavy). I do not have access to Liquitex in my area so I was wondering if that one from Golden is of any good. Also I am interested in doing some radioactive water, green or something like that. Do you have any advice on that? I want to create some water spillage on some big bases for my miniatures. Thanks!

      @Terranscapes  Před 10 lety

      I use both. Very good products. Recommended for sure. Since this video, I've used more materials, and combine them for different effects.

    have you gotten a little sun?? anyway, awesome conclusion to the series! liquitex wins again..! can't wait to see the follow up video with the product in actual application. Any chance of seeing you actually applying the product and your popsicle stick technique? If you have Air Conditioning you can drop the humidity further - run your furnace and raise the house 5-8 degrees, then use the AC to drop the temperature. It seems a bit counterintuitive to heat then cool, but it works like a charm!

    I may have missed it while listening to the other water effects videos, but did you try floor varnish like Klear / Future (used in air modelling apparently), and simply pure acrylic medium ?
    The first (floor varnish) apparently dries to rock solid, and could do everything but the gel surface I guess.
    I'm trying to find something that's not an art product and therefore more affordable.

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  Před 10 lety

      No, I have never tried just pouring Future. That is an interesting idea, but I suspect it would only work for shallow pours (1/8"). If you give it a go. I would love to see your results. I'm always interested in new ways of doing water. :)

    Terrific videos!
    Regarding the Liquitex Gloss Gel, it also comes in Heavy and Super-Heavy versions. Have you tried either of these?

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  Před 7 lety +1

      I've used the heavy, but not the super heavy I think. I think both are worth of consideration with super heavy being a good choice for rougher waters.

    Wow what a Goldmine! I want to create some water effects for a plastic model diorama, I was a little lost and just want to say thank you so much for your video. I'm creating a stream in a desert, where my vehicle crosses over into the water to the other side. Do you have any tips? Just ordered Liquitex gloss medium! Also a scientist here as well! :-)

    Your calculations were fine, but pressure is Force/Area, not mass per area. You're actually fine, though, since ounces (I'm assuming you did this using the Avoirdupois ounce) is a unit of weight, not mass.
    Of course, I'm not just commenting to be pedantic... I wanted to let you know that I found the video really helpful and informative, and wanted to say thanks.
    Cheers!
