You are very wise going with the F550 for what you do. I see so many guys on CZcams and on forums towing well over 30,000 lbs with their 1 tons and it's down right ridiculous. I know that Ford & Dodge say that their new 1 tons can tow 30+ thousand pounds, but realistically I think a commercial 4500/5500 truck is crucial in pulling weight like that day in and day out. 1 tons are for farmers and occasional trailer towers ie. horse owners, boat owners, 5th wheel or holiday trailer owners, race car owners etc. 450/550 trucks are for guys who pull skid steers, excavators, backhoes, 3-5 cars daily all the time. The axles, and dumbed down engine hp is designed for that sort of abuse, 1 tons can't do it forever compared to the bigger trucks. So kudos to you for going with the 550. I run a small hotshot business in Alberta Canada, and I run a srw 1 ton Ford, but I only tow single vehicles, or small machinery with my business. I don't do oilfield or heavy equipment with my business as of yet, but if/when I do, I will most certainly be buying a 450/550 truck to do it with. The heaviest I have towed with my srw 1 ton was 14,500 lbs and that was by far the heaviest ever, 9/10 of my jobs are from 3,000-10,000 lbs and it is very uncommon that one is over 10,000 lbs trailer+load. But if/when my company grows I will be forced to buy a larger heavier truck for my bigger jobs.
I got pulled into the scales at 37,500 with my 2014 SRW ram 3500. DOT checked tire weight limits and said I was all within capacity....now I was almost bingo on fuel. Had I had the 150 gallons on board, then I'd have been illegal.
Best video yet! Nice seeing another fellow Canadian killing it. Would like to hear more about your company and see your other equipment.. saws ect maybe some reviews.
Joshua Russell Hey buddy where are you located? Hey man for sure. Planning to do lots of reviews soon on my snow plows, various tires, trailers, air bags, hitch’s, saws all that stuff! Thanks for watching. Any feedback is great!
Company I worked for believed in F550's. Had a fleet of 15 with 20 foot landscaping bodies on them. They were hauling skid steers and pallets of sod. The trailers they were using were falling apart after about 18 months. Boss decided to upgrade all trailers to 12 ton Hudson trailers. We had a big company meeting. He told everyone to take care of the new equipment. We had 4 tandem dump trucks, 4 quad axle dump trucks, 1 seven axle lowboy and 1 beaver tail lowboy. I was over the dump trucks and drove one as well. I took care of all the DOT compliance paperwork. We worked in North Carolina. I asked one simple question. Who is going to teach all the guys how to pass the CDL test at the DMV? He responded we don't need a CDL to drive a F550. I pulled out me manual and showed him the requirements. He got pissed off really bad and told me to stop telling him how to run his company! If you know Hudson Brothers trailers. They have the capacity in a large decal on both sides of the tongue. It took NC DOT officers 7 days to pull over the first truck. 3 days later the entire fleet had been stopped. The fines were in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. I left the following week. The company lasted another 18 months. Karma has everyone's address.
Jimmy Hinson Hey man you are correct and you did the right thing. I have my proper license and the truck is registered for 46,000 lbs and when it is loaded my combined weight is alittle Over 41,000lbs. I did all the proper things to avoid this from happening with me. Thanks for watching.
@@workplaytv The thing that really infuriates me. There are government guide lines for trucks and trailers and weights. But anybody can go purchase a motor home that weighs 80,000 lbs or more. They are not required to have any experience or special training. All you need is money.
Nice set up. Kind of funny how some of the people think they are smarter than the manufacturer. Manufacturers have spent countless hours and millions if not BILLIONS of dollars in research, development and testing but they watch a video and think they know more than the manufacturer about what YOUR vehicle is capable of?!? And then think you would pull on to the scale and get your weight checked and not have your license checked? Some people are just so anxious to hate that they don't think before they speak! Blow off the haters, your doing great!
Is your trailer equipped with elec over hydro drum brakes? I'm really wanting disc brakes but would need to go triple 12ks vs tandem 15k axles. I've never used hydro drum. Do you feel like they are strong enough and give you enough confidence or would you get a trailer with disc brakes next time?
They are disc brakes. 16,000lb Rockwell axles. They do a pretty good job but had slit of issues with the hubs and brakes this year. I don’t recommend Rockwell. Wouldn’t recommend a Suretrac trailer unless you are guaranteed it will be dexter axles. I was told I was getting dexter but didn’t.
All I hear about is the F450 no more F550s they stopped production on them in 2011 when they introduced the new cab design and engine are you sure it's an F550
What are the trailer axle ratings? The trailer is rated for 21,000+ not necessarily the axles on the trailer. What are the tire ratings? Are they at proper pressure? Based on a 2017 F550, the GCWR is 40,000. Somewhere his numbers aren't adding up or I'm somehow not thinking straight. 30K gross trailer. 19K excavator. 3K in attachments/fuel. He's at about gross for the trail MAX. Crew cab, steel flatbed, fuel tank, tools, etc- the truck is near or over 10K. He's at his legal limit.
Just because Brandon is wrong doesn't mean he's not right..... people have been loading these trucks with the amount they need the trucks to haul for 25 years... they have upped the capacity cause they knew the trucks were pulling that much weight already... from what I've heard only California cares what the GCW sticker says, the rest of North America only cares when the tires are touchin the fender wells, just balance the load, register it with the weight you'll put on it and get a CDL if your gonna use this for a Company
Single axle is good for 20,000 if you have the tire rating for it. Dual axles 34,000 again if you have the tire rating. What also comes into play is what is your truck rated for and what is it registered to carry?
Chris Murdock the truck has 19,500 gvwr but is registered for 43,000 because all the weight gets registered to the truck because it is prorated. When you combine my front axle and rear axle weight in this video you get roughly 17,500 I believe. I would need to watch the video again myself. I am within my weights . Like I said I the video I was pulled into the scale and I was great.
Ok I'm going by what I look for when I weigh a truck. I use the Texas DPS weight standard to go by. Single axles 20,000 pounds. Dual axle 34,000 without any permits and tire rating allows it. Also length of the trailer plays into your allowed weight as well. I dont know what your truck is rated for either but I look at the manufacturer data plate to get that.
Couple things - you have to make sure your front + rear axle weights together are under your GVWR of 19,500. If you look at the label, the maximum F + R axle weights add up to more than 19,500. So if your rear axle is maxed out, then you can't also max out your front without going overweight. Also, if the trailer is rated for a load of 21,160 and you have 21K on there, you can't add another 6K. When you calculated your trailer weight you just looked at your rear axles but you forgot to add the tongue weight. Axle weight + tongue weight has to be under 30,000.
this is a nice video on picking the right equipment for heavy hauling. HOWEVER - i don't know where this guy lives but unless he has a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) he's NOT going to drive that rig on any highway in Pennsylvania!! in Pennsylvania (and i believe West Virginia and Ohio) the total "combined" weight (truck, trailer and trailer load) cannot exceed 26,000 lbs for a regular driver's license. so depending upon the State in the United States a person has their driver's license issued from - that State will determine how much weight a person with a regular (non-CDL) license can legally tow. this is an entirely separate issue from whether you have picked equipment capable of hauling the weight you're wanting to haul.
The weight rating actually goes DOWN and the license requirements go up with a commercial trailer in the US. 26k is the limit for a single axle vehicle with no trailer and a D License. You add a trailer (commercial) and everything changes.
He's operating in Alberta. They have inter provincial rules that allow this type of "hot shot" configuration. He would not be allowed to cross any border with this rig, without getting a Class 1 CDL.
All states are 26,001 any combination total weight you have to have a cdl. Its standard all over the country. Per federal standards. Check it out. I have a cousin who has his cdl and a know something else with a cdl. I have looked it up in the past. If it is just over 10,000 lbs you can just have a dot medical card. That's for stuff like a box truck or a truck and trailer over 10,000 lbs.
@@sargent1250 actually, i've researched the driver's license restrictions for towing and hauling for the 50 States in the U.S. and they are ALL over the board. there does seem to be a cutoff of 26000 lbs in all the States for private "non-commercial" towing but the regulations of some States are very confusing. the bottom line is, the guy from Canada could NEVER do what he's doing in any U.S. State without a commercial driver's license (CDL). here's a reference source to U.S. towing/hauling laws: drivinglaws.aaa.com/tag/types-of-drivers-licenses/
You forgot one major factor- the truck itself is rated for 40,000lbs GCWR (max truck and trailer can weight as stated by Ford motor company) assuming it was spec'd with option code 535 max tow package from Ford. Highly doubt you would get ticketed for that but something worth notating.
The hitch on the truck should be 10% ahead of the rear axle to transfer more weight to the front axle. Allison Transmission is only available in the Chevy or GMC pickup - NOT a Dodge.
In USA, this is a commercial vehicle just like a Tractor Trailer because he is by definition a commercial enterprise. He needs a CDL Class A because the trailer is over 10,000 lbs. He also needs a log book, proper makings on his truck and he needs a DOT number and authority to haul and any other regulations.
Canada is a funny duck.. if registered as commercial it's "similar" yet not. My truck for example is not registered as commercial, the other day I had to haul gravel for personal use, the trailer I was using was a 12' dump it's supposed to hold 4.4cu yard... we asked for 2 yards... go up to the scale total weight truck/trailer/gravel was pushing 22,000lbs I had over 12,000lbs in gravel... "Legally" I could have left the yard and drove home with it. Needless to say they loaded over 4 yards, we went back and dumped half, didn't need that much. I've been about 16,000lbs behind my 1500 ram twice, not anything law enforcement could say.. now before you call me an idiot, I was taking back roads out in the country I knew very well, very very low traffic, like I saw 2 or 3 vehicles on a 50km trip and it was lower speed (60-80km/h), on a trailer with properly setup trailer brakes.
gold5th Hey man I know what you are saying I have gone and asked for 3 tons and drove away with 6. Sounds like your doing it right and being cautious that’s all you can do .
@killer2600 that's the "funny duck" part.. here in Alberta the weight laws only apply to vehicles registered as commercial. So I could be rolling down the highway over weight, get pulled into a weigh scale(not quite sure how they'd do it since I don't have to comply with the flashing lights) all they could do is give me a tongue lashing about how bad being over weight is. It's kinda sad here actually that somebody who dailies a smart car can hop into a 37+ft motor coach or an F350/450 and put a 37+ft fifth wheel behind it, and then a boat or another trailer behind that and be 100% legal. Here you can drive anything with 2 axles on the vehicle(other than motorcycle), not counting trailer with the regular "car/light truck (class 5)" license. So technically.. for personal use somebody could hop in a single axle semi (without air brakes) toss a 40ft trailer(once again without air brakes) and go have fun.. legally on a regular class 5.I'm not saying it's a good system, it's the way it is here. Personally I like towing, it's fun and it can be a mental challenge, it's great fun pulling through a drive through with a turn in it with a loaded trailer and watching the staff at the store freak out.To the actual question, they'd have to prove the over weigh driver was negligent, like didn't maintain or setup the brakes properly, didn't secure the load properly, etc or they legitimately broke a traffic law for example ran a stop sign and hit somebody.. I don't know if it would matter big picture if it were driver error or overloaded.. from a legal "you're at fault" stand point. If the overloaded person were traveling properly and somebody else ran a stop and got t-boned, I don't know if weight would ever come up.
my buddy pulled 40k in logs with his 86 chevy k30 with a 12 valve cummins in it and a nv4500 trans and 4.56 gears on 35 inch tires at 60mph . for like 50 miles to the mill
Man look at the thumbnail again, it shows him head in hand, clearly in the woods. If you thought he was still at the scale from reading the title that's your problem.
I have a 550 and pull a 2 axle tilt bed haul a 12000lbs mini ex. My 16 year old son was driving it other day. He's an excellent driver, but trooper got him was told have to have CDL they added up gross combo which I've never had them do. I talked to head truck inspector who I know. They want my name and info on door and I have to fill out log book each day forever. They consider it just like a semi, so there are rules to follow. I now only use it to move machines. Fuel mileage isn't good on them and warranty has put 2 turbos on it next one I'll have to pay for. Getting deleted soon see if that helps. Def tank heater was 1300. They cost a lot to run. But they are a puller my old one was 1999 F350 5spd 4wd. With heavy service bed it has 500 000 miles. 2nd eng n trans
Michael McClure Yeah it is registered for 43,000 because where it is pro rated all the weight gets registered to the truck. I have my class 3 with condition 15 here in Canada we can do that vs getting class 1. I also have my airbrakes so I can actually use any tandem dump truck and haul a float. Just can’t drive an actual semi with kingpin trailer.
Then when you have to fuel up in Canada where the pumps (like 90% of the world) read in litres. So you ask a local how many litres in a gallon and they give you the answer in the Imperial gallons they grew up with which are 5/4 (or is it 6/5) of your piddly little gallon. Now I'm confused too but my gallon of water weighed 8 lb (fortunately we used to use the same pounds) so likely 4 litres is 6/5 of an old Canadian gallon.
Gosh dang Vbelt said he watched this video and read the comments. Jeez ppl going crazy!! LOL!! Ppl go way heavier than you and if 350 can handle that weight then a 550 will do it even better!! They just super truckers than don’t want to see you win. And if a kenworth or what ever is cheaper cool. You wanted to 550 and your money bought what you wanted!!! Keep killing it. I’m playing catch up! Happy Sunday brother
Hahaha yeah I know eh buddy. You know you could have bought this and you could be doing that... your are illegal because of this.. lol. I say in the video why I bought what I bought and clearly I am not illegal if I went through the scales and I drove away from it. I didn't spend over $100k on a setup and didn't do my homework before I bought it. Oh and you know you need you CDL to haul that. LOL I KNOW!!! Thanks buddy have a good one from Nova Scotia
9 car Cottrell also paperwork technicalities.. truck can be manufactured to haul certain capacity but can be registered under that by a company to save money
Well, right up front, I have to say that I am AT LEAST GLAD to hear SOMEONE actually has the sense not to think an F350 could pull this load legally!!! If I see one more 'super jock' using an F350 to pull a 40k load (overweight on almost every axle on his COMBINED rig), I think I'll scream! Outlaw cowboy trash like that is why we've got ELDs and insane licensing rules now! As for the cost to set up a rig like the one in this video, and listening to the numbers on here (and some quick metric to SAE conversions), I realized one thing...my old 1972 C65 was a STEAL at only $4,000...even with the $8,000 I put into it! Front 9k axle, rear 20k axle, GVWR 28,990, GCWR 48,500...427 gas burner (though that year DID have a 4-71 Detroit option) and looks stylish, too! Sometimes, you just have to realize the work you're doing requires a Class 5 vehicle to legally do the job right! Thumbs up!
that's my thing, when you can get an old Freightliner for $5k and fix it up for another $10k, you now have $15k in a Truck that can legally and easily pull any equipment you want, semi trailers ain't that expensive....its just seems like a simple obvious option compared to spending $80k on a pickup that's barely legal to carry everything
@@cmusic52 Yes but a freighliner can't go everywhere a pick-up truck can go. Ever try to take a freightliner through the mcdonalds drive-thru or a bank drive up teller?
A single axle flat top will go in either parking lot just not the drive through and a few paces won't kill anyone besides if I wanna run errands I have an f250 or a jeep
@@josephyoung1635 So when I haul long-distance in the freightliner, I'm supposed to be bringing my F-250 or Jeep along for any errands I may need to run? And this is more economical than buying a pick-up truck that can haul what I need and using it for all my transportation needs?
Idk about you but I'm not out running errands while I'm on long hauls i do that at home although I guess I've dropped my trailer and went bobtail to tourist attractions or for dinner in my road tractor... the 10 wheel sleeper variety ... also I have a single Axel 6 tire retired road tractor with private plates I use in lieu of a f550 because personally I wasn't willing to put 80k in a truck when I could get one for 5k that'll do the same stuff its preference bud ... no need for a poor attitude
I wanted to let your viewers know that in Pennsylvania, unless you are registered in combination all of the weight goes to the truck. So if you hit the scales in Pa they would impound your truck unless you had it registered correctly. My F700 in Pa could haul that weight.
stevegps you're freaking high. These trucks respond better to being worked hard. My brother in laws dually 3500 Ram ALWAYS has at least 10,000lbs behind it and he has 250,000+ miles on it with no issues. He regularly runs over gross and the truck loves it. Tires and brakes wear pretty quick but at least the emissions stay hot and cook off the filters.
You need a cdl. Class A. It’s over 26,000lbs and it’s a combination. No other bs. Need a cdl!!! PLUS!!! just because you have the power... doesn’t mean you can control it!!
Daniel Hughes I’m in Canada buddy and what I have it what I need! I am good to go. I’m not an idiot. I am a very responsible business owner and wouldn’t create a setup and spend the money unless I had what I needed. I do have my cdl there are just different stages here. Thanks
@Daniel Hughes I’m not sure what the equivalent license is in Canada for commercial drivers, but he would not fall under US commercial regulations being from Canada!! Don’t know where you are from, but it should not be that hard to understand when he is using metric weight measurements and transposing them into Imperial weights, he isn’t from America. Therefore he does not have to comply(as far as drivers refs are concerned) with the FMCSA regulations! Which also means that his GVW or gross vehicle combined and axle weights and “CDL” requirements are governed by Canada!!! I’m not sure, but I doubt that it makes him enough money to cross the border to do contract work, so why would he need to worry about US commercial vehicle regulations???!!!!
workplaytv I wasn’t implying you are an idiot. I drive commercial truck. That heavy of a combined load is too much for a f550 regardless of the manufactures rating. You know that. Just my opinion.
@@workplaytv we run welders and air compressors and gang boxes and even a bench vice on our rigs I'm a semi trucker so I usually haul the big boy loads down the roads myself but I'm a regular oL farmer on the weekends around Hatton Alabama but I do like that trailer in this video perfect layout and length and plus the dual tires on both axles is a must I've seen a lot of these trailers hot shotters pulling on the road with triaxel and dual axle with single wheels and that bugs me the ground pressure is way to high on those at 25,000lbs and duals spread it out far better
Farmers don't need fuel or tools huh? Maybe in the 18th or 19th century but ever since then, they need them as much or more than you. But I still give you a thumbs up.
My math puts him over gross. 40993 pounds when he has a GCWR of 40,000 pounds truck. 5862 on the steer 11394 on the rear 23737 on the trailer axles This is on a 2.204 pounds per kilo. 18600 on the slip puts it at 40,994. Sorry, but you're over weight.
I've gone through a chicken coop over 80,000 pounds with my lift axle up. The DOT officer didn't care that I was over 80,000. I still had 6 axles on the ground. He cared that I was about 38,000 on my drives. I dropped the lift on the trailer and then, I was about 32 on the drives. I talked my way out of even getting a warning let alone a ticket. Clean level 2 inspection. Just because he was let go, doesn't mean he was legal. Just means the officer didn't care. I had a load of lumber out of Canada during the winter 2012/13. I did the math at 2.21 pounds per kilo at the mill. This way I errored in my favor and wouldn't be over 80. I was within a few hundred pounds, 79+. I got into Montana and ended up going through a coop out in the middle of nowhere. Officer said I was 500 pounds over on my trailer. I explained everything including my math and kg on each axle set. He let me go. No warnings, no tickets. On my way out, he suggested I spread the axles out (sliding rear trailer axle). I told him I can't. That would put me about 2K over on my drives then. Went through 3 more chicken coops that trip. Not one said anything about my weight, even when I got an inspection at one.
I dont know how Canada is doing with this. But i feel soon the USA feds are going to start going after private owners with pick ups this big. Not just the hotshot drivers but people hauling horse and race trailers.
Frank Last Yeah man and I think they should. I would say 2/3 or people hauling campers are over there max payload. People get caught up on towing capacity’s. It’s the payload and axle weight that matters. People aren’t educated and neither are sales people. They say I have a 9,000lb trailer so they buy a 150. Then they go and throw 2,000lbs of stuff inside and there whole family and are way over in weights.
workplaytv it’s comical to see what people try and tow with little understanding of the rules Confusing manufacturers tow rating , Gvwr , sticker weight and drivers license restrictions are why the government enforced the CVOR 4500kg rule . I recently got my CVOR, commercial insurance and upgraded my drivers license, just to operate my 6500 top kicker for farm use
@@workplaytv I swear I think those OEMs need to be required to leave 1000lbs for people in a Crew Cab before they account for 18% Tongue weight on a Fifth wheel before they start saying these F250s can tow 20k lbs and F150s can tow 10k, cause I think they're gaming their numbers and the Feds don't care until they see it in the hands of 100k drivers on the road
Registered CGVWR for this truck is 35000 lbs as stated by Ford. This is the maximum weight for the combination. Read this as all axles on the ground in the combination. Sure it will tow it, the brakes may not stop it. They were engineered for a 35k max load. If you want your equipment to last spec it at75 to80% of Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Your running at 115%+. Don’t let your dealer see this video. You are admitting to using your truck in a manner that VOIDS your warranty. Good luck.
So do the easy thing google “ 2015 Ford F550 CGVWR” then from the list pick the PDF from fleet.ford.com. It’s the specs from Ford for this truck. Combined gross weight IS 35000 lbs. you can f*** with numbers all you want but that’s the number that the manufacturer spells out. We had two 2013 in our fleet, we ran them at 32500- 33500. We replaced a lot of pads and rotors. Just experience. Today I work for an OEM and it always amazes me how few will actually read the max weight numbers published by the manufacturer. Your F350 would also pull it...just even more unsafe. A cubic yard of feathers and a cubic yard of lead , the weights should be close right?
Nice truck but you could buy a used single Axel road tractor for a few thousand dollars and have power and weight to spare plus your never over working it pulling this stuff just a thought ...
Joseph Young Yeah I travel all over the Martime provinces. I put over 30,000 miles on this season and wanted something easy to pick up food, check into hotels and also use as a pickup if need be.
Nowadays DOT and highway patrol see a gooseneck trailer towed by 3/4 ton or 1 ton pickup truck and they automatically assume that you are a hotshot commercial trucker... Make sure that you have a CDL make sure you have Dot numbers make sure that your truck is plated and registered for the weight of the trailer and the truck combined 12000 pound plates are not good enough make sure you have triangles make sure you have snow chains in the winter time make sure you have tie down straps make sure you have all your ducks in a row because they are going to get you on something there's a whole bunch of other things on here I didn't list but you're going to need them make sure your tires are rated correctly make sure your axles are rated correctly make sure your brakes are working properly make sure your emergency brake will hold back the truck make sure your trailer brakes will hold back the truck and there's a whole list of things and don't even get me started on that bull crap edl shit they have now
I have 2004 Fl70 freightliner GVWR 36000 lbs one axle the truck weight 11200 lbs, and I have trailer 40Feet they said on it do not Exceed 15900 lbs. the trailer weight 10000. I want to move 2 Machines backhoe 9500 lbs and Ditch witch 12000lbs is this overwait? what I am thinking is I can because I have semi truck correct me if I am wrong. please I need your help thank you.
As long as you load heavy toward the front and give yourself lots of tongue weight you may be ok. Your truck has lots of payload but your trailer is your limiting factor.
Technically a. F550 has a gcwr of 40k and you were at like 41 so over your max by a little. in reality the f550 suspension ,gearing and frame are much better then f450 that has a gcwr 43k. So the f550 should have gcwr of atleast 45k.
Jeff Courtney here in Nova Scotia I have my class 3 with condition 15 . That gives me single vehicle or combined over 14,000 kegs and trailer over 4500 kgs. I also have my airbrakes because I have a tandem
@@workplaytv Thanks. Here in the states some don't understand that its not how much your hauling, it's the Gross Combination Weight Rating that determines license requirements and intrastate or interstate use for commerce. In other words business or personal use. Alot more to having a business than just getting a truck, trailer, and machine. Customers who are comparing bids will see a big difference in price to get people that play by the rules.
Better off with an F650 for that kind of weight. The F550 can do it, but pushing it too its limits like that all the time will shorten the lifespan of the truck.
How do you have 6,265 more pounds of capacity left on the trailer when you said it is a 30K rated trailer (GVW) and it weighs 8,840 pounds and your machine weighs 20,000 plus ??? It looks more like you've got 62.65 pounds of available weight limit, not 6,000
Steven Ruble hahaha your right!! I could take the wife out in this but it would be a bumpy ride. Rather take the 250 Lariat! How long have you had the 450 and how’s it been treating you? I am thinking of ordering one to replace my 350.
technically you dont need a CDL if it is a private vehicle and not for hire. (obviously he is for hire and needs a CDL - PERIOD) there are "non-commercial" licences In NC a class "B" is-- if exempt from exempt from commercial driver license requirements, Has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, Tows another vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less. A class "A" licence if holder Is exempt from commercial driver license requirements Has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more (provided the gross vehicle weight rating of the vehicle(s) being towed is greater than 10,000 pounds) or what is being towed is over 10,001 lbs
Aaron Klosterman Are you new to CZcams? This is educational for other people other there. It is what everyone does. No one is forcing you to watch. If I wanted to show off my toys I would make a video of all my new trucks, suvs, side by sides, my nice big yard and house, my huge cottage on 40 acres on a very private lake, should I go on? And I was able to get all these things from working my ass off and being smart with my money. Hey maybe I’ll make a video for ya and send to you personally. What’s your email. Have a great day.
In Canada, the weigh stations open randomly and close randomly. In Ontario, on the 401, Putnum, I've crested the hill before the station and the lights are flashing. Get to it, they're not flashing already and vice versa. Only way to avoid the scales in Canada is to drive around them and the DOT there know this and have mobile patrol.
just load it up, and head down the road, as fast as you can go, the heck with laws, no one follows them, and as for breaking, , who cares, all comes down to is following the rules, they are there for a reason,
Wouldn't it be better financially better. To purches a heavy duty boxtruck. With a fifth wheel in place of the box. So you are using industrial commercial grade equipment. To pull these heavy loads? Even a heavy duty box truck. That is used but in very good condition. Is still less expensive. Than most new diesel one ton pickup trucks.

Just cerioys have you ever looked at the f600? It's still pickup size but suppose to have more capacity. Have you thought of dropping a tune in the 550?
the only reason why ram would even be considered a good truck is because they have the cummings engine in then which is used in the big trucks but that engine is still falling down the ladder of good engines. if you could put a CAT motor in it, then do it as that engine will never let you down. but you cant now because CAT stopped making on the road engines because the new ones had to be electronic controlled and pass CA emissions which they couldn't do.
@@workplaytv i wouldn't go with the ram because if you look at some of the early to late 2000s pickup models, you will see the rust very quickly around the wheel wells. i would go with ford too because i haven't had a problem with my 2006 f150. my dad has got a 2001 gmc 3500HD that he uses for his job and you name it we have had to replace it more than once.

I say $20k because if you don't have another truck to use, you will be down and need that extra money to pay the bills until your truck gets back.

I think it's a disservice to society to sell these trucks then pull that kinda weight. this is why they have tractor trailers, it's a weight to weight ratio, Power axle combination gearing etc, don't make a shit load of difference when you get 40,000lbs behind you. For short hauls great, for longer distances. Shouldn't be allowed. That's just my opinion.
C Steele Yoour right it is a lot of weight. But 30,000 not 40,000. And I certainly wouldn’t do it if I didn’t feel safe and was putting the public in danger. I am completely within my weight limits. To be honest you would have to drive the truck to understand. It feels great.
I had a 4500 Kodiak 2006 with an LBZ Duramax and a 6 speed Allison. The engine was delivered vs same engine in my 2500 pickup. The transmission was a 6 speed but had sixth gear locked out from factory via the TCM. I asked around and was told it was all for longevity of the engine/tranny. So in a fleet application cowboy drivers could just drive the trucks wide open acceleration loaded heavy and the setup would live. Likewise with the tranny sixth was locked out to put less stress on the clutches. The truck was a hoss, I loved towing with it. I admit loading it well over what I was registered to haul. Pulled a 40' gooseneck with 20-21 2200-2300lb wet wrapped rolls of hay and would put another on the bed between the neck of trailer and cab. Truck was a 4x4 and loved pulling anything i ever hooked to. All that said dosent make it Right.

I was going to come on here and slam you for being overweight becasue I see a lot of these guys who pull something like full size backhoes behind a f350...... and think they are above the law. But hey....... good job. You are not one of those guys and seem to be doing it right.
Not trying to start anything but ford puts the same motor in the f-350 all the way up to the f-750. So like ehh that’s a lot of truck. Not a lot of motor, ford ya doin sum wrong there.
He never said anything about a medical card which is a federal law.. good thing he doesn’t drive in Pennsylvania the portable scales are like rats 🐀 here he better have his clean underwear on because they’ll be checking them out to 😉😉
You are very wise going with the F550 for what you do.
Hey maybe I missed it but what did you say the total weight of the whole set up was?
V-BELT and SON Hey bud. Total weight was 18,600kg= 41,005lbs.
Northern Ontario here. That's awesome man looking forward to it!
Joshua Russell Sweet. I actually had to go to Manitoba for the 550 and drove it from there to NS so I drove down through parts of northern Ontario.
I have my proper license and the truck is registered for 46,000 lbs and when it is loaded my combined weight is alittle
Over 41,000lbs.

Nice rig.
I drive a 2017 ford f550 tow truck v10 the trucks are beasts have driven 550 and heavy duty trucks for years they have never let me down great truck
All I hear about is the F450 no more F550s they stopped production on them in 2011 when they introduced the new cab design and engine are you sure it's an F550
What is the GCWR of the truck?
Just because you have weight to spare on your axles and trailers doesn't mean you are not overweight
Wrong. That is just crap tfl truck repeats 2x an episode and all over youtube now
What are the trailer axle ratings? The trailer is rated for 21,000+ not necessarily the axles on the trailer.
What are the tire ratings? Are they at proper pressure? Based on a 2017 F550, the GCWR is 40,000.
Somewhere his numbers aren't adding up or I'm somehow not thinking straight. 30K gross trailer. 19K excavator. 3K in attachments/fuel. He's at about gross for the trail MAX. Crew cab, steel flatbed, fuel tank, tools, etc- the truck is near or over 10K. He's at his legal limit.
@@4x4le It is not wrong Brandon. Think about it for a second and don't come off like a dickhead.
Brendan you completely wrong, Mike is right
Just because Brandon is wrong doesn't mean he's not right..... people have been loading these trucks with the amount they need the trucks to haul for 25 years... they have upped the capacity cause they knew the trucks were pulling that much weight already... from what I've heard only California cares what the GCW sticker says, the rest of North America only cares when the tires are touchin the fender wells, just balance the load, register it with the weight you'll put on it and get a CDL if your gonna use this for a Company
That’s a lot of money. 👍🏻
Chris Murdock I say in the video what it is rated for and I just wrote that in above message. 19,500. And the gcvwr is over 44,000.
That close in weight you might want to check out a 25ton by Big Tex they pull really well. I used one with a power line construction crew
6200lb is close? Lol That's almost the weight of the truck in difference.
yes. to pull that trailer even with a pick up, requires a class a cdl.
How many brake jobs since this video.
Zero. Still original brakes. 70k miles
My 2019 F550 with max tow is rated at 40k GCWR.
Thank you very much thinking about getting a 2019 Ford F-550 SD myself. Lot's of information on this CZcams Channel.
pretty cool
DS TRUCKS wow man that’s an old video that caused lots of hurt feelings
this is a nice video on picking the right equipment for heavy hauling.
Thats federal law. Every state.
George VictorLast Yeah it is all the same here as well except for having to post my weights on the truck. I have all those proper items in order
@@gold5th And if such person should have an accident it's not their fault because while not being legal they were cautious?

Idk about you but I'm not out running errands while I'm on long hauls i do that at home although I guess I've dropped my trailer and went bobtail to tourist attractions or for dinner in my road tractor... the 10 wheel sleeper variety ... also I have a single Axel 6 tire retired road tractor with private plates I use in lieu of a f550 because personally I wasn't willing to put 80k in a truck when I could get one for 5k that'll do the same stuff its preference bud ... no need for a poor attitude
sweet truck and trailer
Shit it's a POWER STROKE she can handle what ever you want to drag
I wanted to let your viewers know that in Pennsylvania, unless you are registered in combination all of the weight goes to the truck. So if you hit the scales in Pa they would impound your truck unless you had it registered correctly. My F700 in Pa could haul that weight.
James Carr Yeah same here. All weight is on truck. Trailer actually shows 0 weight
Good setup if you plan on replacing your truck every 2 years. These are medium duty trucks and don't hold up in the long run. Good luck.
stevegps you're freaking high.
So you have stock in Liberty Mutual Insurance?
You need a cdl. Class A. It’s over 26,000lbs and it’s a combination. No other bs. Need a cdl!!! PLUS!!! just because you have the power... doesn’t mean you can control it!!
Daniel Hughes I’m in Canada buddy and what I have it what I need! I am good to go. I’m not an idiot. I am a very responsible business owner and wouldn’t create a setup and spend the money unless I had what I needed. I do have my cdl there are just different stages here. Thanks
@Daniel Hughes
I’m not sure what the equivalent license is in Canada for commercial drivers, but he would not fall under US commercial regulations being from Canada!!
I think the dealship is telling people these trucks are like semi trucks. But just because the paper work says it doesn’t mean it’s the best idea!!!
frankcastle7777 oh man. I could not agree more!!
You would be surprised what farmers gotta haul well us Alabama farmers got everything but the kitchen sink on our trucks
Justin Berryman Oh yeah man we have lots around here and ya never know what might be on back!
Justin Berryman Yeah I just got a vice to mount to it. I would love to throw a welder on there too. Yeah man I agree the tandem is a must!!
Farmers don't need fuel or tools huh? Maybe in the 18th or 19th century but ever since then, they need them as much or more than you. But I still give you a thumbs up.
My math puts him over gross. 40993 pounds when he has a GCWR of 40,000 pounds truck.
5862 on the steer
11394 on the rear
23737 on the trailer axles
This is on a 2.204 pounds per kilo.
18600 on the slip puts it at 40,994.
Sorry, but you're over weight.
He's forgetting the trailer weight of 8K+pounds on his trailer capacity. I took a screenshot of his hand written figures.
The scale cleared him ....

@@addamochs Wasnt Culbertson by any chance was it?
I dont know how Canada is doing with this. But i feel soon the USA feds are going to start going after private owners with pick ups this big. Not just the hotshot drivers but people hauling horse and race trailers.
Frank Last Yeah man and I think they should. I would say 2/3 or people hauling campers are over there max payload. People get caught up on towing capacity’s. It’s the payload and axle weight that matters. People aren’t educated and neither are sales people. They say I have a 9,000lb trailer so they buy a 150. Then they go and throw 2,000lbs of stuff inside and there whole family and are way over in weights.
workplaytv it’s comical to see what people try and tow with little understanding of the rules
Confusing manufacturers tow rating , Gvwr , sticker weight and drivers license restrictions are why the government enforced the CVOR 4500kg rule .
I recently got my CVOR, commercial insurance and upgraded my drivers license, just to operate my 6500 top kicker for farm use
Duncan D McGrath Yeah man and they people come on here who don’t know the rules and try to tell me I am illegal. Makes me laugh
They do. I heard of a guy going to an auto race. Had a prize. Technically for profit so needed a CDL. Stupid if you ask me. Too many laws as is.
Many of the big truck stops have scales. Try using them?
workwillfreeyou Only a couple where I live and they are few and far between. I knew I was good. I created my setup knowing I was good.
Good luck.
Raymond Wilson haha what?? Your number is way off bud. In what year 2010?
To each their own I just do all that stuff with the road tractor when out working but a bigger purchase is a bigger tax deduction I suppose
Nowadays DOT and highway patrol see a gooseneck trailer towed by 3/4 ton or 1 ton pickup truck and they automatically assume that you are a hotshot commercial trucker... Make sure that you have a CDL make sure you have Dot numbers make sure that your truck is plated and registered for the weight of the trailer and the truck combined 12000 pound plates are not good enough make sure you have triangles make sure you have snow chains in the winter time make sure you have tie down straps make sure you have all your ducks in a row because they are going to get you on something there's a whole bunch of other things on here I didn't list but you're going to need them make sure your tires are rated correctly make sure your axles are rated correctly make sure your brakes are working properly make sure your emergency brake will hold back the truck make sure your trailer brakes will hold back the truck and there's a whole list of things and don't even get me started on that bull crap edl shit they have now
Joseph Atnip Hey your right the list goes on and on!!! I am good on all accounts but one little slip up and your in a world of hurt!

As long as you load heavy toward the front and give yourself lots of tongue weight you may be ok. Your truck has lots of payload but your trailer is your limiting factor.
@@workplaytv The trailer is guitar mead gooseneck, what is better loading the backhoe reverse 9500 .or the ditch witch first 12000 ?
Technically a. F550 has a gcwr of 40k and you were at like 41 so over your max by a little. in reality the f550 suspension ,gearing and frame are much better then f450 that has a gcwr 43k. So the f550 should have gcwr of atleast 45k.
Any issues with Powerstroke at this point?

Better off with an F650 for that kind of weight. The F550 can do it, but pushing it too its limits like that all the time will shorten the lifespan of the truck.
Paul Davis Yeah you are correct for sure. I’d like to look into that the next couple years or if I star my having problems.

Get CB listen or ask is DOT ahead
In Canada, the weigh stations open randomly and close randomly. In Ontario, on the 401, Putnum, I've crested the hill before the station and the lights are flashing. Get to it, they're not flashing already and vice versa. Only way to avoid the scales in Canada is to drive around them and the DOT there know this and have mobile patrol.

Hey yeah I agree but do still feel the cummins is a very reliable engine. Power wise it is starting to fall behind.

They get people 9ut front of my house all the time going around the scales
Alot of scales now have cameras put up on the roads around the scales with cameras on the exits watching for people dodging the scales. Remember that a good lie is just as good as the truth!!! LOL!!!
and now you know why truckers use CB radios.... its called the original hey is the scale open? where are they checkin for scale dodgers?
You would think if a guy can afford that setup he could be afford an electric pump for fuel. Lol just giving ya a little shit.
