In total 5.6 WAR puts him firmly in the above the average all-star let alone the average MLB player as a whole. League average OPS was .706, his was .849. Calling him average is straight up delusional.

Ik it’s mainly due to there being no salary cap and revenue sharing. But Jesus baseball should be the sport with the smallest contracts. A QB can carry you to the playoffs. A good small forward can win you a championship. But one pitcher isn’t going to do anything. They play once a week that’s it. Pitching wins championships not pitchers. You need a solid rotation with at least two aces and some solid back up. And you need a lights out bullpen. Then not to mention you need at stacked line up, bc luck does come into play in baseball, a great pitcher can give up runs. One or two good batters won’t do anything. 9 guys have to hit. I mean I love baseball, but these guys should be getting paid this amount, considering how crucial it is to have solid players all around the field. This will actually back fire on the players, sure they’re being in a lot of money now. But owners will eventually realize it’s just not worth it to spend that kind of money on one guy. Then the players are fucked, expecting big contracts and no one will be interested.

I like betting on yourself but the difference between 100 vs 200 million is very small and allow you to live the same life vs 500k vs 64 million a year. Just saying anything can happen and you can get hurt and be done forever in sports. Maybe players have ensurance they can by were if they are out of mlb they can collect to allow them the risk of waiting but I think Machado in particular should have extended a few years sense he was making the minimum. If Betts took the initial five year deal, he would've made more, and then, he would've gotten a fat contract that would've given him that extra money, as well. So really, he lost.
