Around the 04:00 mark: Because the ligaments of the shoulder and elbow are already under immense strain at 100-105 MPH. Adding any more speed would likely tear ligaments and result in career-threatening injuries.
The rest of the video is a bunch of footage of a dude in a lab trying to hit fastballs.
James Badger the damage to the ligaments and elbows are to the pitchers not the batters. So it doesn't matter the the dude is trying to hit fastballs, he's not hurting himself
James Badger oml thanks lmao

ryan2698 - Minecraft No. Sidearm is sidearm. Submarine is inverted so you are releasing while your arm is going in an upward inverted motion.
Just think how rare a pitcher like Nolan Ryan was back in those days throwing 100 mph when know one was. Must have been crazy for batters seeing that for the first time. I'm sure studying his mechanics helped others achieve better speed on their fast balls. Nolan is the G.O.A.T.
Watch the documentary "Fastball". When Ryan was throwing 100, they were measuring pitch speed as it crossed the plate, as opposed to now, where they measure at the point of release. They had a physics professor run the numbers and it's likely he was throwing 110 if you measured at the point of release.
Another reason why babe Ruth isn’t the goat… he wouldn’t hit against today’s pitchers

FakTorThis I bet you could. Without warming up I threw 77 at a station set up at the giants game a year ago at age 32. He doesn't get any body behind the ball, at minimum you should still be able to do that with a little technique.
I can drive 110 mph and throw a ball out of the window. Technically can't be impossible😂
As a baseball pitch and a pretty successful batter i can tell you that a batter being able to hit a ball isn't just about the brain, it involves instinct and muscle memory while your brain makes that last second decision on whether to swing or not. That's why coach's always tell you to think strike then decide later because if you wait for your decision the ball is already past you, it takes years of practice to become really good batter. the key is timing then making that last second adjustment based on the spin of the baseball. (and of course mechanics)
Thats right. You’re loadin up and startin a swing every time. Every pitch u see is either a swing or an aborted swing
Chapman threw 106 in a game with The reds against the pirates a while back but it didn’t count as the fastest pitch because it was a pre season game
They tested this with the most un-athletic person
They always do, they use a guy who's never even thrown a pitch and try and use him to judge if the body can do something.

Some of the best handballers in the world (european sport) can shoot a handball up to 140km/h ( 88 mph). Now, the handball is 3 times heavier than baseball, and has about 3-4 times bigger diameter (much greater air resistance). I think these guys can easily throw a baseball 100 mph with very little training.

He relied on the umpires
Kyle Hendricks is doing that these days.

What about air resistance? Hardballs act differently at the mile high stadium in Denver, both pitched and hit. How much less resistance would there be at a two mile high baseball field, at least compared with sealevel?
Right. They didnt say anything about the increased resistance at higher speeds

Robin Roberts said, "You could go up there with a howitzer, a good fastball hitter is going to hit your fastball." What made Feller, Koufax, etc, so effective was the complemented the fastball with a really good curveball. So if, as a batter, you're "Looking," for one, you'll NEVER hit the other. And you HAVE to be looking for the fastball.

also, there is a point where you have to use the same amount of energy released in the 100mph throw, to even move it another 1 mph. The real limiting factor becomes the density of the ball and air resitance. try throwing a ping pong ball as far as you can, itll take twice the amount of effort just to get it another 4 feet

Been listening to "The Sports Gene" on Audible. One of the points he makes is that at this speed, the batter does not have enough time to see the pitch, judge where it's going , and decide whether or not to swing. It's just too fast. So the greatest batters are looking at things like the pitcher's shoulder movement, windup. famously, some top mlb blayers get struck out by girl softball pitchers all the time even though they're throwing 65 mph tops. They can't read the pitcher.

as apposed to a 110mph slowball
The more they see a pitcher, the more intricate things they pick up. Gwynn was one of the earliest guys who revealed how they studied pitchers back in the 80's, and why he won so many batting titles back then. He used to use VHS tapes of the pitchers to study their motion, their release point, how the balls moved, etc, and it paid off, he won multiple batting titles.
Nolan Ryan has been credited with a 108 MPH fastball. According to The Game Haus.
I thought you couldn’t hit it until I realized how hard their swing actually is and on a catchers GoPro the reason it’s hard should be the different pitch but you can still see the dot in the middle for curves and slider that kinda stuff
I hate how that part with how far away the mound is the batter was right handed but in left handed batters box
Nolan Ryan threw 108.1 in 74'.. Randy Johnson threw 103 at age 40.. Something tells me Randy or Nolan probably threw 110 at one point or another.
Shinigami do yourself a favour, google Steve Dalkowski. You wont be disappointed
They measured the ball speed at different places during those different eras. The place they measure it now would not be 110 for any pitcher ever. They are still a couple of the greatest pitchers ever, though.
The Nolan Ryan 108.1 was originally clocked at like 101, but you are right that they were clocked at different places. The 101 was then converted into how they measure velocity today, and the conversion was equal to a 108mph fastball if measured today.
If Nolan truly hit 108mph.. he could probably hit 110mph. Never will really know for sure..but I'd like to think Nolan pitched a 110+ fastball at least once in his career.
Pretty sure Nolan Ryan is a freak of nature. 27 seasons in the league and he still was able to throw heat up until the end of his career. Plus, he threw a 98 mph pitch with a ligament torn in his pitching arm for his last career pitch.

Yeah, i have tendonitis in my elbow. It really sucks because i pitched for 7 years and now this is my 9th year and i havent pitched for 2 years. You really need to be cautious on how hard and what type of pitch you do.
Sean C. Same here but my dumbass decided it would be wise to throw out my arm at a practice
Blanket statements like “pitchers shouldn’t throw as hard” and “pitcher should throw less breaking balls” are bad. Different pitches and pitch speeds are going to be more stressful or less stressful on a given pitcher due to their distinct physiology. And the fastball puts the most stress on the arm compared to breaking balls an offspeed pitched
sad
Where was this filmed?
Aroldis goes hard🔥
I'm in my mid 40s and I can still hit low 60s on my fastball.

The biggest mistake in this is the batter reaction times. Yes, a batter has great reaction time, but baseball is a game of chess. The batter is trying to figure out what pitch is coming next, where is going to be. He'll begin his swing BEFORE the pitch is thrown, and hope he made the correct decision.

Gasthejuice45 my brother who is a pitcher would disagree with you slightly a curveball is harder to perfect also a curveball or screwball are two of the hardest pitches to hit especially for a left hander
soapqueen2008 fastball right on the corner = game over. Curve balls aren't hard to hit at all. The only real reason they can be difficult is because it's thrown at a different speed.
Try to hit my eephus pitch and then we can talk lol
or what if you throw it really slow and the guy swings expecting an 100 but it comes 1 second later XD
Josh James of the Houston Astros made his MLB debut in 2018 and the very first pitch he threw was 102 mph 😍😍😍
I've been throwing like that as q pitcher as a child. I've always been q bit slower but curveball is the real trick. Especially as a peft hander. Let me get in that shape and I'll be the slowest thing yoy can't hit. Especially for right handers

The quality of this video is also almosg impossible.
It is was great.
Remember when Bauer got replaced in a game and he threw the ball away, he reached like 109 mph, of course with no windup
Nolan Ryan had a pitched clocked at 108.5 mph, but Chapman has the highest "recorded" pitch in a game.
They clocked them at different points. Clocked at the point today, they measured that pitch at 101mph. They've standardized things since that time. Which is a good thing in my opinion. Yet... I cant' help think some of the really old timers through that fast... there was not timing mechanism in there day. The mound was higher.... Satchel Page...it would be interesting to know.
Jon Lanier Nolan Ryan’s pitch was actually 101 mph, but since they changed the measurements, in today’s game it would be 108.1 mph
The fastest pitcher of all time was almost certainly Steve Dalkowski, an early 60s minor leaguer who was thought to throw about 110. Nolan Ryan later in his career could touch 100 mph. Early in his career looking at video he was NOTICABLY faster. 105-plus and possibly closer to 110. But it's tough to really know for pitchers pre-1980. Feller, Koufax, Walter Johnson, guys like that probably topped out at 95. But usually lived in the low 90s to save on wear and tear. What made Ryan unique was how long and how many innings he could throw at those speeds.
They did the math Johnson was said to throw 93-95. Bob was said to throw 105. And Ryan 107. So Steve was said to throw faster them them all. Also good to note johnson was a side arm pitcher, typically side arms throw slower.
Thing about Johnson is he could throw another 5 to 8 mph faster but his fastball would straighten out and he would get rocked so while he could have been a career 100mph pitcher it would have been short and unsuccessful. Now Ryan was rare in that he could throw as fast as he could possibly throw and his fastball still had movement never straightening out like most pitchers
Oh and by the way Sid Finch a short time minor leaguer slash beer distribution salesman according to Sports Illustrated in the 80's was known for throwing 115 mph he just didn't want to i guess look it up.
Control is way more important than velocity
He was at SFBA
Nobody threw harder than Nolan Ryan in his prime. And he was still lighting it up in the upper 90s into his mid 40s. Man was inhuman.
He was still very overhyped.
@@Poindexterous REALLY? Have you ever looked at his stats? I bet not. 7 no-hitters for one. Guiness Book world record of pitching a baseball at 108 mph is another. In his prime, he often pitched at 100+ mph.
@@sergeantmasson3669 yes that’s actually what I mean. Stat wise he’s not a top 10 pitcher (all time). Though most talk about him as such. He played 25+ years had the most strikeouts (5k)yes, but also pitched 5k innings. 7 no hitters is very impressive and no doubt he’s a HOFer but just a bit overrated IMO.
Look up Shaun Tait and Brett Lee highlights, now that’s fast
IamAbeliever that too it bounce on the pitch and you never know where is it Gonna Come.
And Akhtar and Starc too
