I read George with my little nephew recently, prepared to have a long discussion about it, but he understood and accepted George's feelings much more easily/quickly than I anticipated. He's a good egg, I was very proud.
Dani Chiong awhhh 🥺💖
If you want to know why I chuckle, look up on urban dictionary the meaning of egg in the trans community. XD is cute.
Awwwww yesss
I loved that book! First read it when I was 10 and it put my feelings into words. Truly an amazing read :)
Why egg?
I ADORED "I wish you all the best" so much, it instantly became very dear to me. Also really enjoyed Dreadnought and am chomping at the bit for the chance to get Soverign from my local library safely. I had checked out peter darling having thought the plot was different, only to return it without reading it. I'm still a bit nervous as even with them being adults at the time of the story, the prospect of captain hook and peter having a relationship with the history of the characters as I know them didn't sit all that well.
Every recommendation video you make grows my already huge TBR and I can’t wait to get to them.
I’m an non-binary ace new to Booktube, there’s so much to learn it’s a little daunting with my anxiety.
I absolutely loved Peter Darling, I read it immediately after hearing you recommend it the first time and I’m so glad I did! I’m a disabled ace lesbian new to booktube and you were definitely one of my inspirations to start a channel, so thank you💜💜💜
im a trans guy and want to send u my book.
I loved both If I Were Your Girl, and Birthday. Meredith Russo's name on the cover is all I need to know. If she wrote it, I'll read it.
Thank you so much for this video! I've been wanting to read more books with trans characters but honestly didn't really know where to look. Peter Darling has been on my TBR for years since first hearing you talk about it and I've yet to read it! I think this summer I finally will, and I'm so excited to put these books on my TBR!
Okay but your reaction to The Storm of Life cover is such a mood 😂 I cannot wait for that book! I laughed while watching this video because I have almost every single one of these books on my TBR from other times you've mentioned them!
Ahhh I can’t even tell you how much I love your channel, it’s so diverse and inclusive. You do an amazing job!
Thank you so much for this series of recommendations, Cece!! My TBR is a mountain, but it is a mountain of WONDROUS books that you've shown me so thank yooooooooou! :D
I read the Nemesis series because of you and it’s one of my all time favorite series!
Thank you so much for this video! I just finished reading If I Was Your Girl and it rlly touched me. As someone who’s trans I rlly appreciate these recommendations :)
This is amazing! It’s given me so many books and bloggers who I didn’t even know existed and as a trans wannabe booktuber this is so important! Thank you so much!
i'm so glad you mentioned small beauty!! i adored that book it's so so wonderful soft, so sweet!!! :) i hope more people pick it up because you recommended it :)
Agh. Thank you so much for these ownvoices books!! I added a bunch to my TBR and want to read them ASAP!!
I love your pride pin!
Also I finally got a lgbtq shirt. While it mostly applies to the lgb portion it is a grey shirt that says “love is love” in rainbow on the left breast. I would love to get a completely lgbtq inclusive pride shirt, this is what I have found for now.
I just watched your video on ace/aro book recs and THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! As someone who's asexual and trans seeing both of these videos are so cool, especially the ace/aro one because the only book I have ever read with ace representation is Let's talk about love. I've never had the joy of reading anything with trans main character and I can't wait to get into reading these!
Thanks so much for these recommendations! Yet more books for my ever growing TBR. I'll have to give all these a good read. I need to read Dreadnought yesterday.
I've just read I Wish You All the Best and (finally) Dreadnought this month and they're just so good! Can't wait to read Sovereign (just got my copy yesterday) and also realizing I can't believe I haven't read George or Peter Darling yet - gonna need to work on that
Definitely my favourite video from your pride recommendations. I hadn’t heard of most of these books
Jemma G yay, so glad you enjoyed! 💖
I'm reading Dreadnought as part of the Reading Rush and I can't wait! And I Wish You All the Best is literally the best. Thank you for highlighting #ownvoices books!!
Also, I just did the Enby Booktube Tag and talked about how I want to read The Earthquake Room by Davey Davis, an nb author I just found out about.
I’ve read a couple of the books on this list, most of that due to you CeCe!
Thanks so much for this video!! I’m a trans guy and I’ve been on the look out for some trans rep
I’m also a booktuber and an amateur writer I try to post weekly on my channel ✌️
this is such a good vid!!! adding a lot of these to my tbr!!
I Wish You All the Best is so good! I also enjoyed Dreadnaught. All of Austin Chant's books sound interesting to me - especially the Peter Pan one. Thank you for sharing - my TBR always grows after watching your videos.
Thank you so much for making this video!!!!
I’ve only read a couple of the books on this list because i’m a bad trans but bless you for this/your last video and using your channel to give voices like this a chance to be heard. 🥺
thank you for these recommendations!
Such amazing books, I am aming at increasing my read books with trans rep cuz I also dont read enough. Also whoever makes Austin's book covers wow... just wow
CeCe, why must you keep inflating my tbr?! I’ll never have enough time to read all of the awesome books you recommend 😂
Trans enby booktuber here! Watching some of these to get inspired to make my own rec vids this coming June. This was great!
I remember reading George in middle school without knowing what it was about when I checked it out, it opened my eyes as the first Trans central book (or maybe just lgbtq book in general) I ever read. It was a big step in figuring myself out, even if I didn't know my identity at the time and only just recently started to grasp who I was. I think deep down I was able to relate to it when I didn't even realize it back then, even tho I'm not trans femme.
I loved Meredith Russo's other novel "Birthday", which was recently published and also features a trans girl protagonist💕. It was just phenomenal and one of my favourite books of all time! Just be aware that there are many homophobic and transphobic remarks made by side characters and the mc is at some point also dealing with mental health issues(depression, suicide)-> it's a heavy read.
Yes, Birthday is amazing! I listened to the audiobook earlier this month and I loved it. Also, the audiobook is narrated by a trans woman, which is excellent.
@@bts_vinyl I did not know that. I'm going to have to reread it through audiobook.
I really think you should check out Birthday, its by the author of If I Was Your Girl, and it is SO GOOD
I definitely have grown my TBR. I really loved Symptoms of Being Human is a really good and emotional book dealing with an enby mc. One of the most poignant elements is there 'birth gender' is never disclosed so one can't even have assumptions on that.
Probably my favorite book of the first half of 2019 is Fierce Femmes & Notorious Liars by Kai Cheng Thom
I also really enjoyed Graham's Delicacies by Em Ali, i loved how in this short book there were so many different nonbinary characters
Non-fiction:
The Abc's of LGBT+ by Ash Hardell
Beyond Trans by Heath Fogg Davis
Believe Me by Eddie Izzard
Transposes by Dylan Edwards
Fiction:
The Merry Spinster by Daniel Ortberg
Assigned male comics by Sophie Labelle.
as of March 2023, her name is Suzy Izzard
Thank you for making this
Lily & Dunkin by Donna Gephart is also a good trans middle grade/ya book, it also has bipolar rep! ^_^
If anyone else likes smutty romance books one of my favourite romance authors is trans - Jay Northcote. At least one of his books features a trans main character - Starting from Scratch, there may be others I haven't read yet. He also writes great bi rep.
thank you!!!!
Unfortunetly u don't have many views, but i loved the way you make your videos and I need more from this topic
Seriously looking forward to reading these :) My enby self has just started working on some booktube vids ^_^
Love the recs! I realize this video is a year old, but it was JUST recommended for me xD
Thank you for this video. You are the person I go to when I want broaden my LGBT+ reading because you are so inclusive!
Oh also... I have a blog that I post bookish content on monthly (as well as some life/mental health stuff). I can’t wait to find more trans and nb bloggers through this video! ascoolasminticecream.wordpress.com
I was wondering if Theo was trans-spec (edit for by bad spelling lol), but was confused by what I thought was a shut-down in one part of the book. Now, it makes sense if it is because she is a demigirl (and if the author is, too!). This is definitely why I need to read more own voices trans-spec books... I need to know more! Thank you for more books for my tbr mountain and library holds! 🏳️🌈💕
(No trans flag emoji to use unfortunately 😞)
I have not yet read a fiction book with a trans as a lead character except for George, but i did read I'm Afraid Of Men and it was a really good and interesting read. It made me understand better Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's insights on trans women and feminism, how they are women and they do experience misogyny but also transphobia and at the same time they were rised as men until the moment they decided to embrace their gender identity so they knew male privileges, toxic masculinity, systemic misogyny, etc.
You should check out the author Gabriel Squalia for own voices trans rep in high fantasy. I absolutely loved reading Viscera (even though it is quite macabre and readers should definitely look up trigger warnings) and I hope to read Dead Boys, which is heavily inspired by Day of the Dead myths soon
Thank you for the recs! I really want to read Peter Darling now but can’t seem to find it to buy anywhere:(
Returning to this video after comig out as demigirl. Thanks again, CeCe!
i loved i wish you all the best! such an amazing novel.
i added almost all of these books to my list of books to get in 2021 lol
I've had Peter Darling on my TBR for a couple of months, and where I have currently moved I cannot find a copy anywhere. None of the libraries, not even on amazon or chapters.... :(
I want to read Meredith Russo so bad!
On the topic of queer middle grade, have you read Starcrossed? It seems very cute! It’s a middle grade book with actresses and wlw!!!
Enfys Best I have not! But it’s been on my tbr for a bit, especially since realizing I like queer middle grade a lot more.
I cried when I saw this thumbnail and title /gen
Not a own voice story, but "the art of being normal" captured alot of my feelings as a trans teen, I related to Kate alot in many ways. It did have some slightly weird accpects of presenting Kate, but tbh, I could overlook it. Alot of the cringier stuff was cringy to the characters, so it was relatable in that way as well. Idk, i enjoyed it
Hey! Know this video is a year old now.... but any tips on how/where I can find Peter Darling?
I am a trans guy myself and always thought about how best to take part in the book community. I'm not comfortable in front of a camera so I don't think making booktube videos would be for me. But I love writing reviews and giving updates on goodreads. Do you have any experience with how to gain a greater following on there? Or do you think that being present on another platform like bookstagram for example is important?
not an own voices but when the moon was ours by Anne Marie McLemore is beautiful and amazing and trans
have you read redefining realness by janet mock?
Captain Book not yet! But it is definitely on my list to read.
Why are most Austen Chant books no longer available 😭 I really want to read Peter Darling, but I can't find it on Amazon or anywhere else 😭
Unfortunately, their publishing company shut down a while back and all of their books are currently out of print! According to the author's Twitter they're working on eventually republishing it's just slow going 💛
@@ProblemsofaBookNerd Thank you, I‘ll keep looking 🙂
Hi, I'm a trans writer working on relaunching my whole author platform because my self-published books really sucked. That said, I'm ready to start submitting my new first book, a YA action book about a vampire trans girl, to agents. I'd be honored if you would read it when it's published.
I'm trying to find Peter Darling & coffee boy as hard copies but nothing there! These books have disappeared from everywhere! If you know where can I find them please tell me.
Semo fashi0n I’m currently not sure what the process will be with getting these books. The publisher has shut down and so they aren’t available to purchase but I believe the author is currently working on edits so that they can make all their books available to purchase again! According to their twitter, edits for Peter Darling are currently underway and it will be available again in the next couple of weeks!
I didn't know you grew up in Utah! I'm bi and live in UT, used to be Mormon.
Yup! Utah born and raised, and I was also raised in a Mormon household.
arrrrrghhhhh I really really want to read Peter Darling but apparently the publisher has closed down and I’ve even read that people were paying hundreds of dollars to buy the remaining copies but now it looks like even those have sold out 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
♥️🧡💛💚💙💜
Can you suggest a transgender narrative for project
I would love to! Is there a specific type of narrative you are looking for? Hopefully I can point you in the right direction.
If I Was Your Girl is indeed well-written and beautiful, but the scene describing the main character's suicide attempt is rather detailed and graphic, and was very triggering to me. So, just a warning to other people who deal with suicidal ideations.
hey why is Peter Darling multiple hundred dollars??
thank you so much for making this video!! I've been on the hunt for more books with transgender and nonbinary MCs and this list definitely helped 💜
I'm also an enby book blogger and I talk about books over on ourworldsofwords.wordpress.com or on twittter @worlds_ofwords 💕💕
We publish MM TG Romance. Check us out in the about section. Thank you!
Does anyone have any genderfluid or genderqueer book recommendations?
Same question😂
Some of my recommendations are Ana on the Edge it’s about a non-binary ice skater who is figuring out her gender. Another recommendation is the Magnus Chase series. It’s about Norse mythology in modern day. It’s written by the same author as The Percy Jackson series I personally like it a lot more than the Percy Jackson series. There is a few parts where characters from other series by Rick Riordan appear and there is some spoilers but minor ones. The main character is queer and one of the other protagonists is Muslim. In the second and third book there is a gender fluid character who becomes one of the main protagonists. The books switch perspectives from different characters. Both books are middle school books but I think anyone could enjoy them. Sorry if I was rambling these are some of my favorite books.
Non-binary this Demi-girl that. what about a binary trans woman main character and cis straight male love interest!?!
Today I found out that j.k Rowling is transphobic :( so I'm vry upset bc I love harry potter
Recently had my second gender crisis👉👉
I love your recs. I enjoyed real queer America so much. But one suggestion. Can you please replace the term cis with genetic? Because many people find it offensive. So please?
G. Chatterjee no, I won’t. Cis is a correct word, it means I identify with the gender I was assigned at birth and I will not use “medical” or “biological” or “genetic” because those terms are offensive and limiting. Cis isn’t a bad word.
@@ProblemsofaBookNerd Don't you think that's exactly the point ? Medically we are female, assigned at birth? It doesn't exclude those who are not. Medically, not socially. As a result, I too find the word cis a slur. Don't you feel when someone is saying they don't want to be addressed as such , people should not use these words.
Genetic and medical are words used to imply that trans women are not "real" women. It's terf lingo, it others trans folks. Trans women are women and cis women are women. Cis is no more a slur than trans is, it is just a prefix that means same. It is the exact same distinction as heterosexual vs homosexual. They are not slurs because they are simple descriptive terms.
I do not alter my language to suit transphobes. Also, a slur isn't a word that you decide you don't like, it's a word with a history of oppression. You don't get to change it just because some people are upset that trans is becoming accepted so we have to make up words that oppress us. I am cisgender. I identify with the gender I was assigned at birth. I am homosexual. I am a woman attracted to people of the same gender.
