- We are so very close to welcoming guests to Chateau de Bruges!! We will let you know as soon as we are taking bookings!
Graham, Jake and Danielle have been busy working hard to get the chateau ready for its first guests.
Jake’s been busy adding finishing touches to Ravel and Lutece. Danielle has been swamped with upholstery projects for both bedrooms and Graham has been working like a dog getting Bedroom 1 ready for decorating!
Graham also introduces his first ’50 Trades of Gray - How do ya?’ section this week. He shows you how to skim a wall with plaster. Let us know if you want to see more like this!
Take a look at more of Graham's renovation 'How to' videos on his own CZcams channel - '50 trades of Gray' / @50tradesofgray41
Lastly, Graham reflects on his talented Uncle Geoffrey’s paintings and how we plan to share his amazing artwork with our guests.
We really hope you enjoy following us on our journey at Chateau de Bruges and continue to share any thoughts you have with us in your normal supportive ways.
Merci,
Chateau de Bruges

Just more shaking, Jake. 😉
And more “nice bum” content 😉😂
Those paintings by your uncle Jeffrey are beautiful. It is a wonderful tribute to him to put them up in your chateau and will personalize the space wonderfully.
Thanks so much Catherine! We’re thrilled to have received so much support for Geoffrey’s paintings!
Now there is a true man how he can show his emotions and his love for his family. Thank you.
Thanks Upsepeter! Aww, yeah. He’s a big softie really! 🥰
Those paintings you received from your uncle are stunning. They will be beautiful hanging in the chateau. They will be enjoyed by so many people.
Thanks Claudia! We’re really glad you love them as much as we do!
Definitely enjoy the instructural videos on prepping the rooms. Thanks for doing them. Always cool to see how different people approach a project. Always something to learn by watching.
Glad to hear! Thankyou!
Wow, your Uncle Jeffrey’s paintings are a real treasure to have and will be beautiful in the chateau. What a gifted man!
Love that a family member was an artist and his painting will be in your chateau.
Thanks Robbie! We can only hope to do his paintings justice!
Well Graham went and made me cry with him. I loved Uncle Jeffrey's art. Danielle is really doing a great job turning shabby to chateau. Jake I felt your pain putting up the towel racks.
Haha thanks Rochelle! Glad we’ve all entertained you in parts! Glad you love the paintings as much as we do!
Enjoy the hand's on plastering! The "filling" looks like a mural of clouds in the bathroom! LOL. After you cleaned up the "clouds" this bathroom is just beautiful! Even though the bathrooms are contemporary the choice of colors and the different sizes and designs of tiles work with the chateau! Those paintings in those colors are just what the chateau needs!
Really glad you are liking the design choices Alicia! Your positive comments are refreshing to read and help to encourage us on this journey!
I love that you decorate to your own tastes and are including family artwork. Otherwise, it wouldn’t feel like your home and make you smile. Instead it would just be a showplace. Love following your journey. Thank you for all of your hard work.
Thankyou Marilyn! And really glad you like that we’re doing things our way. Glad you’re enjoying the journey!
Your uncle will live on not just in your hearts but in his art work. What a beautiful place for art work to be displayed. Best wishes as always from Australia x
Thanks Yvonne! Glad you love them as much as we do!
Love the paintings you will enjoy having them on the chateau walls...Danielle has made a good job of the chairs they look fabulous x
Thanks Pauline! She’s been doing a great job!
The Italian one is St Marks Sq, Venice. Lovely memories lovely pictures. It’s really a generational family affair!!
Thanks Paula! Glad you love them as much as we do!
Thank you for sharing your Uncle’s art. He had quite an eye for color, very much enjoyed seeing them❤️🌻👩🏼🌾
Glad you liked them as much as we did! We hope to share them with our guests when they stay!
So lovely for you to have Geoffrey's paintings
Thanks Leigh! We can’t wait to put them up!
Paintings are amazing, the italian one is Venice, San Marco Sq. Great paintings and miningfull, histoy and memory of your uncle is preserved for a long time!
Thanks Francisco! Glad you agree!
Sharing your Uncles art will be a beautiful way of sharing his talent, and you will have memories forever each time you see them to cherish in the chateau, thank you for sharing x
You’re spot on Creative cottage! We’re also glad that you love the paintings as much as we do!
The perfectionist obviously used the 'let loose' brand of plaster. Loved the cloud effect with the let loose! 😂
Hahaha love it!
Beautiful paintings. They will be lovely around the chateau.
God bless
Thanks Peggy! We sure do hope so!
A bientôt.
How lovely for you to put up your uncles paintings Graham...good on you !
Thanks Kyle! We really love them!
The paintings you showed were spectacular.
Such talent. As an artist and art history buff, I can say they are REALLY something to cherish.
Will watch the video again to see them again.
Thanks so much Will! We are thrilled that so many people seem to love them as much as we do! Glad you’ll be returning to see them up around the chateau!
the one painting that you thought was of an Italian landscape is in fact of Piazza San Marco looking out towards the sea. I'm not sure but i blieve that one of the paintings from the hilltop overlooking the water and church steeple is of Lake Como! The artwork is all stunning!
Thankyou Flora! We’re glad you love the paintings also!
You are all doing such a great job. I do think that cornices will be a finishing touch to all the rooms. All the very best of luck 🤞🏻
Thanks Colleen! We are looking into that! 😁
Looking good guys. the rooms and chairs look wonderful. Love the paintings. Hopefully they will find a place in their new home. Thanks for sharing
Thankyou Rosemarie! Glad you enjoyed another Vlog and like the look of the rooms and paintings!
Graham add a little creme of Tartar to the plaster mix. It slows the setup time. It's an old plasters trick.
Oooo like it mike! Thanks!
Danielle, if you plan to do a lot of reupholstering you might think of trying strips of brads for easier application.
She’s tried them! They’re helpful! Just super expensive.
Your Uncle was a very talented painter. He definitely had a grasp of light and color to make the mood stand out. These will be beautiful properly matted and framed. I am an art major myself and these are very impressionistic which is one of my favorite paintings styles. I wasn’t so sure at first with the light and dark blue in the bedroom but that bed makes all the difference and love how it is a shout out to the tile colors in the shower. Very nicely done.
Really glad you love the paintings Swenger! 🥰 glad you like the bedroom colours a bit more now too. 😊 if you check our more recent videos you’ll see that we’ve had a few of uncle Geoffrey’s paintings framed now! 🥰
Ah, big hugs to Graham. His uncle's paintings are exquisite. I am sure the chateau will house them forever and everyone is going to appreciate that beauty.
Great work on the plaster, the privies, the chairs and all.
Best wishes guys and cheers.
Thanks Peter! We cannot wait to share Geoffrey’s art with our guests at the chateau.
Graham your families original artwork is lovely & reminds me of Gaugin, how very appropriate for a French Chateau & so personal for all of you !! Have you thought of hosting Artists Retreats or Salons..? It might be a creative way to market yourselves to a new niche clientele & possibly acquire some more artwork for your walls.. At my restaurant we invited local Artists to display their work (for sale) in an exhibition format & we changed it monthly or seasonally as paintings & photographs sold..
We have Susan and we love the idea! Just need to get to renovating an activity space!
Hello, I've been binge watching your vlogs the last few days, and enjoying them very much! What a gorgeous property you have! The drone footage was great to see, but if I'm honest, I was quite surprised to see the huge dead tree near the chateau still standing. I thought I understood in an earlier vlog that it would be coming down, as it an enormous hazard if it falls. It's positioned to wipe out a huge portion of the chateau. Eek!
Glad you are enjoying watching our videos Lora! Yes, that tree will likely have to come down before too long! Although we will need a professional to take that one down in sections as its so close to the chateau. And that will be expensive! :)
Good job on the sound when mixing!
Thanks Agape! Glad the hard work doesn’t go unnoticed 😉
The chairs turned out beautiful Danielle. Well done.
Thanks Kyle! Glad you liked them! 🥰
Volume and sound was great. The rooms are looking nearly ready to go. Loving the diy tips, I might be needing them soon. Danielle’s upholstery looks fab, I’m definitely going to need some tips for this. The paintings are going to look fab decorating the walls of the chateau , such talent! ❤️👏🏼
Thanks Nic! Fingers crossed you’re in soon and we can come and see the place!
Our upholsterer used electic knife . We had one of those to carve our turkey.
Thanks Marilyn! A few people have mentioned the same! It’s on Danielle’s Christmas wish list!
I’m absolutely loving your channel each week and all you have accomplished already.
Geoffrey’s paintings are a true gift to you.
The paintings would look lovely in the rooms you’ve already renovated and throughout your chateau.
Look forward to Serve or Swerve on Wednesday to see what’s cookin’.
Maine USA
Thanks Denise! Really appreciate you taking the time to comment to us again! It means a lot to have such positive responses about our hard work so thankyou! Only one more day to wait for SOS! (Serve or Swerve)!
Your uncle's artwork will be really personable placed around the château. It will truly honour his memory. Also, thanks for showing all the upholstery steps. It was an eye opener to see the detail & effort that goes into refurbishing the chairs. Really lovely result.
Thanks Tania! Danielle sure has been working hard with the upholstery! And we’re thrilled that Geoffrey’s paintings have gone down really well with the viewers!
Yes that was perfect volume, thanks
Superb to hear!
The grounds, especially from above, look Absolutely AMAZING 🌳🌳🌳 & the inside has come so far & looks SO Luxe now - great job all !!!
Thanks Susan!! 😁😁
Loved every part of the vlog, well done all.
Thanks Maxine! Glad you enjoyed this weeks Vlog
God luv ya Graham you’ll find the right place to put them the last buffing and shining up for your Gem to shine for your first guests.
Good luck everyone and enjoy yourselves. Well done your hard work shows, congratulations.
Thankyou soo much Ina!
Love it well done all
Thanks Grandad! ❤️
Such great work and restoration !!!
Many thanks Honey! :D
Like watching the trades . This is why I watch . Keep up the good work
Thanks Jacqueline! Make sure to follow 50 trades of Gray for more like that!
Wonderful paintings loved them all fantastic style he had the will look even better framed
Thank you so much 😀 they’re being framed at the moment
w e felt the emotion too xxxx great artwork !
Aww thanks Carol! We’re glad you agree!
Everything is looking amazing! Love the art work and nice that it's meaningful to you.
Thanks so much Lisa! Glad you love them as much as we do!
Love the channel and the positive energy y'all put into everything. You're really good at mixing humor and humility into the videos.
If you are interested in thoughts and ideas on improving the channel...lol please push that insane piano music into the lake. OR just mix the volume down so that we can enjoy the video at one volume. Another thing that might be helpful is to learn the names of all the trees and shrubs in the garden so you can speak about things with a bit of mastery. It just sounds good when you can talk about your ancient trees and landscaping using names.
Looking forward to the next video!
Great progress! The rooms are looking beautiful, and the chair coverings are well done! How blessed you are to receive such a wonderful gift from a beloved member of family. Have a great week!
Thankyou Melissa! Glad you love the artwork as much as we do!
GM all! Gosh I can't believe your so close to having guests! If only I could have been one of the first! Yep, definitely want to see more, Graham, here and there! Haha @ many swear words! Danielle you make reupholstering look so easy! How long does it actually take to do one chair? They turned out so pretty! Your Uncle's artwork is FANTASTIC!! They'll look wonderful placed around for your guests' enjoyment! Aww Graham. Sniff! Hugs! xo
Thanks for watching along live with us again Cynthia! Glad you are enjoying the videos still!
Beautiful room the chairs are lovely thanks for sharing
Thanks Christine!
Hola Chicos, Just had the time to watch the vlog, great one as always, youa ll did great. DIY shown is always great, paint and upholstery amazing, well done. Saludos from far far away.

Love watching your progress…the art work will look very nice framed up
Thanks Elizabeth! Really glad you love the paintings as much as we do!
Everything is lookin good!!! Thank you for sharing your uncle’s artwork it’s is beautiful and it will add to your… already beautiful rooms 🥰
Thanks Siren! We really agree! Glad you enjoyed another Vlog.
Danielle you make it look so easy love the chairs good idea turning the fabric around for contrast. The art work is just stunning every one of them were ment for the Chateau . I just can,t stop looking at them.
Thankyou so much Mariam! Danielle really is doing a fantastic job!
I really liked the patch plaster on the blue, against the tiles ... was quite stylish
Thanks Kim! Glad you like the tiles 🥰
Love the paintings!
Thanks Janice! We can’t wait to get them up around the chateau!
The rooms are looking splendid! You're making amazing progress! Well done putting up the miserably designed towel bars. They look very nice. Love from Vermont
Thanks Rebekah! Glad you appreciate our hard work! 🥰
Love your work guys. Shower wall tiles are lovely.
Danielle you're quiet a whizz at upholstery. Well done.
The paintings will look great hanging around the chateau.
Love watching you guys
Thankyou very much Angela! She’s certainly picked it up very quickly!
Every part of this video was perfect content.
Wow! That is high praise indeed! Thankyou! Glad you liked it!
Really nice paintings, they eill be perfect in the chateau!
We’re really glad that you like them Gun! 😁
Ravel looks just beautiful; I can't believe how much is completed to be ready for guests, your uncle Geoffrey's artwork is really pretty and will look perfect hanging in the Chateau. Danielle, you make reupholstering look so easy even though it's very time consuming to get it right, well done the chairs are a lovely edition to the rooms. Great job everyone looks fantastic and very inviting. Love from NY
Thanks very much Joni! Such a lovely comment. We’re really glad to you liked the rooms and the paintings too! Thanks you! Love from Lapeyrouse!
Thank you for sharing your uncle’s art! It will be lovely showcased in the chateau! Once your guests start arriving, they will have a treat staying there in your beautiful chateau. ❤️😊
Thankyou Dawn! We really hope the chateau does the paintings justice!
Beautiful work, great job.
Thankyou Lucy!
The painting’s are so beautiful!
Thankyou so much Mecca! We’re glad you agree!
Wow, you sure have been busy! You're getting so close to taking bookings...you have been cracking on! Good for you! I love the reference to Victoria Sponge! The chair is gorgeous! Well done! I'm sure you'll find just the right spots for the art along with just the right frames will no doubt look fantastic. Good for you!
Thanks so much Norma! Really appreciate your really supportive and positive comment! ❤️
Loved the 🖼 paintings! I would definitely bought a few if they were for sale. Can’t wait to see them on the walls of the Château.
Wow thanks Elane! I’m sure Geoffrey would have been chuffed someone would pay him for his artwork! We’re thrilled we can share them with you and our guests though!
If you've got an allen key that's an odd size, cut off the shorter length of the allen key to form a straight bit. It can then be inserted into a drill or size-adjustable screwdriver the same as any other bit.
We’ve since bought a set of Allen key attachments! Appreciate it Ennui! 🥰❤️
Beautiful job and art😊
Thanks Alaine! Glad you liked them!
Just found your vlog. Love it! Love your Uncle's painting. Reminds me of Gauguin's style but I like them better. He was talented!
Haha thanks Beverly! I’m sure that Geoffrey would be thrilled to be compared to Gauguin! Glad you love them as much as we do!
The apholstry pinning segment was fabulous filmography! Nice work.
Thanks Patti! She’s learnt from the best! 😉
Amazing paintings love them
Thanks Christine! Glad you love them as much as we do!
Lovely Paintings
Thanks Dean! Glad you love them as much as we do!
Terrific progress! Most beautiful artwork. Very talented man. The painting with the ‘Italianate feel’ looked like St. Marks Piazza, Venice.
Yes, it is St. Mark's 👍🏻
You’re absolutely right Penny!
Lovely the picture that you said looked Italian i think its st marks square Venice looking out to the water not 100% but that’s wot came to mind before you said looks to you Italian
Thanks Clive! I think a few people have mentioned the same thing so thankyou! Glad you loved the paintings as much as we did!
Lovely that you shared your uncles artwork, it reminds me of Stephanie Jarvis’s fathers artwork that looks right at home at chateau De La Lande with her amazing design capabilities. Great instruction on french plasterwork.
Thanks Sandy! We’re hoping that we can really do the paintings justice around the chateau!
Thanks Sandy! We’re hoping that we can really do the paintings justice around the chateau! Graham’s a great teacher!
beautiful upholstery, your patience with all the tacks! Uncle Geoffrey's paintings are marvelous, the one you thought of an Italian or Spanish harbor is actually St. Mark's Square in Venice! maybe make copies for sale (funding the chateau improvements), or even greeting cards?
Thanks Ant! What a wonderful idea! I think Geoffrey would be thrilled just to have his paintwork admired by many at the chateau.
Danielle have you tried using the upholstery pins that are in strips, you only need to put a pin in every 5 and they are all evenly spaced. It saves a lot of time and gives a great finish.
Hi Sue! She has! And loved them, but they are SUPER expensive! The strips are €3 per meter. Whereas the individual pins are €3 per 100 pins.
Great video again. Not sure if the comment I started just now worked so doing it again. Watching the chairs come back to life was great. Graham’s uncles paintings were so good and will look terrific on the walls of the chateau. Don’t put them all in the bedrooms so we can see them as we walk around.
Thanks Lynne! Looking forward to welcoming you to the chateau in a few weeks!
don't know if you have electric carving knives over there, but they cut through foam like butter. I get them at the charity shops in Canada
Yesss! We did hear that Kathy! That’s on Danielle’s Christmas list! 😂
The paintings are absolutely gorgeous. As an idea, have you thought about displaying them all in one area? For example a corridor or may be a communal area (breakfast/dining room) and having the area dedicated to him.
50 shades of gray excellent name and a perfect idea for your very own channel.
Thanking Danielle for her tips on re-upholstering. After watching a few times I have plucked the courage up to do a bed board. Everything is looking great and loved the opening aerial shot of the chateau and grounds. ❤️
Wow Gill! Excited to hear about your headboard! Love the idea about all the paintings being in the same place! Thankyou for that! Make sure you give 50 trades of Gray a follow! Dad will really appreciate it!
@@ChateaudeBruges I will indeed. It’s always good to improve your knowledge.
I am not an expert on French chateaus, but from what little I know as a designer & decorator, I feel that you are in need of crown moldings/covings. The skirting/base moldings are quite large & are in need a balancing out with a substantial ceiling molding in keeping with the age or the cateau.
Nicely done, and good use of time lapses. I thought of something about your pigeon houses: I expect a lot of the cages were for laying hens, and for rabbits. I know lots of people kept rabbits for meat, and who knows, maybe they were also bred for sport. There certainly seem to be an awful lot of cages! Your uncle's paintings will make a nice addition to the finished bedrooms.
Thanks Lisa! Glad you enjoyed the Vlog!
Suddenly I couldnt chat on live 😟😟😟 reusing old things and up grading them is my favourite job
Noted Jean! We will have lots of that coming your way!
well done with the chairs
Thanks Stephen! Danielle’s been working super hard on them, so nice to see so many people appreciating her hard work!
@@ChateaudeBruges she has done really well
Question about the reupholstering: do you pin right over the staples or take the staples out as you pin around the chair?
Comment: I think the fire places would look nice with several candles in them. I suggest the fake candles that look real and have timers on them so they go on and off each day.
Danielle pins straight over the staples, this can be tricky though as the pin can sometimes hit a staple. That’s the plan I think with the fireplaces! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I just found your channel. I’m loving everything you do. You seem like such a loving, kind, hardworking family. I am having a tiny problem with the dark blue trim detracting from the beautiful tile in the bathroom. Maybe the color comes across differently on camera? Good luck!
thankyou so much! Glad you are enjoying the videos! I would like to think the rooms look even better in person! 🥰❤️
Much more enjoyable now you've tweaked the sound levels.
You’re most welcome Hampshirehippy!
The volume during equipment usage was much better.
But voices still difficult to hear/understand. There's always going to be substantial echoing in empty spaces with high ceilings. However, it's still quite difficult. But I think you are definitely heading in the right direction lol.
Thanks Risa. Glad that we are moving in the right direction.
An electric carving knife will cut foam beautifully. 👍👍
Thanks Helen! We had heard that, but didn’t have one at the moment!
The picture of the harbour that Geoffrey did, looks to be inspired by L. S. Lowry.
I think you’re right Lest we Forget!
What do u plan on doing once ur open? Will that b the end of ur show ? I have a suggestion, take us along, show us what it's like to run a chateau. You'll b the 1st d to do that and I know all us chateau watchers would enjoy it.
We would absolutely love to do that for you and the chateau community. We will try our best to make that happen without any sugar coating.
I am enjoying the journey with you. How long did it take you to complete the chair from start to finish? Also, please, please, please my friends find some other music to use for filler. I just can't listen to that piano every single time. :)
Thanks Kelly! It normally takes Danielle around 2 days to finish a chair from start to finish if she has all her bits she needs in stock at the chateau! 😂 CZcams are really strict with music that you can and can’t use, this therefore makes the selection of music really small. We also really like Tony’s piano music. 🙈
💕
:)
💯
🤙🏼
Just found your blog.
Glad you’ve found us Barbara! Hope you enjoy catching up with the videos
Personally, I don't want to see a 'how to do it' show, because I have no need. I love seeing your accomplishments, and the fast speed through the process suits me fine. But you must do what works for you. If you have the numbers for the other way, then so be it. I really like the dark trim in each room. It emboldens the whole look of the room, without being overpowering.
Thanks Shirley! I think that is likely the way we will move forward with the vlog. Anyone that wants to know ‘how to do it’ can find a professional on CZcams or go to dads own channel!
Lovely room but carpet should be horizontal to bed and not vertical. DEFINITELY.
Jake, was a window or door open while you sprayed that lacquer? And please wear a mask
Of course! Safety first and all that jazz! 😉
looking really good but I hate that you have no door on the en-suite - yuck!
