When I started studying English on my own, some friends asked me "why? You don't know any Americans, you don't intend to travel there, why bother?" Well, here's one reason. I can watch this wonderful lecture, they can't.
I named my son Sagan after this great man. If everyone listened to Carl Sagan's teachings the world would be a much better place. Hopefully my son grows up in a world more like Carl envisioned.
Every time I watch videos of him, I'm amazed by how much he thinks about what he says before he says it. He talks slowly, but with a very high degree of precision, and a high density of information per word. It's an incredible skill.
I'm about 39 minutes into watching this video and I can't help but comment--it's a damn shame Carl Sagan didn't live long enough to enjoy the discovery of thousands of extra-solar planets. We are in great need of voices of clarity such as his. He died way too young.
Totally & Absolutely in Agreement with you. Carl Sagan.. R.I.P So sadly missed... Still much loved, much admired, much respected, much needed.. Whatever errors he may have made.. His successes so far outshine them..they are themselves no more than motes of dust in a sunbeam..💕
I was honored to have translated the Cosmos series for the Spanish dubbing, and later on to be invited by Sagan to join his Planetary Society. He was an extraordinary human being! More than ever we need his voice and wisdom.

Before the Big Bang, when Brofgran was deciding what to unfold, he chuckled, as only one from the Uraste line could. He imagined a technologically advanced civilization watching "funny cat videos". Nevertheless, Brofgran put forth his will and started a process which would create conditions whereby it would come to pass. Now we find ourselves exactly as the creator imagined about 14 billions years ago. And what other feats of imagination await inhabitants on that speck in a giant universe? One can only imagine!
He was full of it and himself. He gets stumped and says ok time to end the interview. He makes far too may assumptions and we know far too little too do that. Where is the antimatter? "SHUT UP!" lol He might have keeled over if someone had asked him where the matter came from that caused the big bang and what was there before that. To think there was nothing before the big bang is small minded.
This may sound strange to most, but to a few it will make perfect sense. I have the original COSMOS series on my phone (downloaded CZcams videos), and I listen to it perhaps every other day as I fall asleep, or as I take my exercise walks in a local nature reserve. Doing this has helped me in my discussions with other people about many topics. It helps me stay focused, level-headed, and (more often than not) happy in dealings with other adults. Perhaps most importantly, it has given me patience to help children explore the world around them, to answer their questions in ways that promotes their thinking, and to work towards a better world I hope they inherit.
ME TOO!!! My friends tell me that I was weird in my sleep sometimes (I sleep with headphones listening to Carl almost every night). I fall asleep muttering the end of Carl’s sentences, whenever he emphasizes something in a phrase, thank you for sharing this, at least now I know my immense admiration and love for the professor is being shared in a similar weird way!

In the Q&A for one lecture, a person asked him, "how could you see the wonders of the world and not want to know God?" Sagan immediately answered, "how could you see the wonders of the world and not want to know science?" I cried the day he died.

Why oh why do the God deniers insist that investigation and discovery, which is the basis of science, and is intrinsic to the human condition, is incompatible with the existence of God? And a second point: I am about 99.8% certain that the hunter gatherers he talks about, are much happier now with access to basic electricity and basic health. None of them would go back to their dark age fight for daily survival trying to follow the spoor of a herd of wild pigs. The evidence for that is to be found in all continents of the world where the extreme poor have been lifted out of the life and death struggle of daily life in squalor by simple access to electric light, water delivered to the home, a bicycle, and a clinic they can ride to. Get rid of the "noble savage" myth once and for all please.
How sad are the people who don't see the incredible beauty of Carl Sagan... In just two ears he, sadly, left us. He had so much vitality still, even to the last day.

When he was answering the "how you will be remembered" question and he jokingly mentioned "I hope this will not come for many years".... I cried. It had come just 2 years later. Man how I wish we could have seen more of this amazing scholar. There are no better philosophers than scientists. And what amazes me is how well synched they all become the smarter they are. As if they grasp there is one fundamental truth about reality which is just too difficult to comprehend for the majority of the population.
In the past, in order to obtain a Ph. D., potential candidates had to master philosophy. Philosophy provides a lens through which actual scientists are able to decipher right from wrong free of bias. That's truly what education should be about- objectivity which coincides with ethics when it come to the etiology of knowledge.

I have listened to this lecture several times and I always cry at the end. A genius scientist, a brilliant communicator, a great human being with a quick wit and endearing sense of humor. He left humanity too soon.

The COSMOS will endure for years. It has for me, the body of work is a masterpiece of our time. I first read the Book when I was 11 some 41 years ago. What a humanitarian, will we see another in the next 100 years.
His Cosmos series on TV was such an amazing way of introducing complex cosmology to the common man in a simplistic but enlightening way, I have since read all his books, I miss you Carl Sagan.

Was just an elementary student when I watched Cosmos by Carl Sagan…. It is from this science series which gave me a basic understanding of life, our home planet, and the universe. Now I am almost 60 years old and I find his talks and lectures are still relevant today. Thank you so much, Carl Sagan.
Carl Sagan will continue to influence and shape astronomy and questions about our purpose here for centuries to come. Of that, I am certain. His Pale Blue Dot speech alone will be remembered in a few centuries when we live on other planets and perhaps develop the technology to reach other stars.
I suspect his Pale Blue Dot speech will be remembered as a painful reminder of how lost humanity became before we went off a cliff via unchecked capitalism if we don't get our shit together by voting in progressives and do it soon. The GOP is outright treachery for society and corporate Democrats only pander towards addressing huge issues such as climate change, healthcare, etc. - Americans need to realize progressives who fight for average Americans and climate action are literally our last hope.

His absence is direly felt. I met Carl Sagon as a teen & we had a great conversation, but one thing he told me stuck with me more than anything, "Question everything", Carl Sagon.
So many times in this video the topic of his lifespan comes up, whether it's someone looking forward to his 70th birthday, or how he's to be remembered one day, and it's truly heartbreaking to know that in two years time he'll be gone. And gone far too soon. How wonderful it would have been to hear his delight over the discoveries that have been made since then.
I ATTENDED A CARL SAGAN LECTURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO IN 1989 ! I WAS A MEMBER OF THE " PLANETARY SOCIETY " HE HELPED FORM IN THE 1980s AND HAD HIM SIGN MY MEMBERSHIP CARD WHICH HE SIGNED AND SAID " WITH PLEASURE " ! ONE OF MY GREAT TREASURES !
As a member of the Planetary Society, I was able to attend a symposium in Washington DC while the Shoemaker - Levy 9 comet was impacting Jupiter in 1994. It was AMAZING! Carl Sagan was the MC for the event (imagine that!) while Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker and David Levy spoke. It was an honor to hear him speak and I won't forget it as long as I live.
Hearing Carl Sagan is like he is always there in our midst. He never died. He has become immortal. Taking a cue from his own expression - Let’s make a world where we never lose his writings, speeches and works and make it available to the common human being!
Goodness, what a loss this man's too-soon death was. A great scientist, a great communicator and cosmic explorer. Hasn't really been replaced. Completely awesome individual.

It saddens me, that Carl had to pass, it would be so interesting to hear him deduce images, from Hubble, and James Webb. As a child he was the voice of cosmos, he introduced me to space, and words would make you imagination just work overtime. As I grow older, I still listen and watch his material. Such a smart human’s human being. Such hope for humanity, in an era of chaos. So outspoken, with a soft, stern, and professional, always recognizable voice. What a man!! The universe is a poorer place since his passing, but we're unbelievably lucky to have had his wisdom and enthusiasm for 62 years. He's the closest I come to worshipping something..
I got the opportunity to hear him speak in the early 90s at my little local community college. He didn't just speak at ivy league schools. My friend went into labor that same day, and I told her she had a time limit and I wasn't missing the chance to hear my space dad speak. I missed the birth, but wouldn't change a thing. I was in a very religious household, and I am forever grateful for the light he shined in my dark world.
I was given Cosmos the book when I was a child. I owe much of my love if astronomy, art, history and science to that one book. The illustrations were spellbinding, but the text was life changing.
"What a master class in humility and skepticism, Carl Sagan was definitely not at the center of the solar system, the galaxy or the universe but always at the center of our thoughts and our hearts 🤓👌👌" I really feel privileged to listen to this wonderful Physics and life teacher, he truly had a privileged mind, which taught us to follow "the tireless search for truth" always with an open mind, and that was perhaps his greatest achievement.
I heard about him for a long time, but never had a chance to watch or listen. When I discovered his lectures and interviews few years ago I was blown away how precise and intelligent he was! I wish he lived longer and contributed more to science and popular science.
My three personal heroes, Carl Sagan, Leonard Nimoy and David Suzuki. Carl inspired much of my work in physics theorem. I have admired, respected, listened to and learned from him since I was a small child. See you out there, somewhere... As for the rest of you, May the Universe accept your chosen paths and through fortune and favour, open them up to you.

Many of us who otherwise would have never had quality scientific instruction, not only recieved very good science lessons but the best scientific thoughts and concepts available, through professor Sagan's books. I cannot express sufficient gratitude for his legacy. We desperately need more people with his wit, his wisdom, his sharpness and his attitude. I just love him with all the strenght of my existence.
I love this scientist for not only his intelligence, but his compassion for the human race. I just realized he died only two years later. How very sad...❤

As a teacher of science, I was able to use the Cosmos series with my students. Most thought it was an amazing program, with so many interesting facts, stories and visual aides of the stars and planets, and of world history, the scientists of ancient times were shown in story format, just an incredible series, and even I learned something new every time we viewed this timeless production, If you haven't seen it, please do.

The end of that speech.. makes you stop and listen and crescendos with the hairs sticking up on the back of your neck. Truly one of humanities greatest thinkers delivering a monumentally historic speech.

This may sound strange to most, but to a few it will make perfect sense. I have the original COSMOS series on my phone (downloaded CZcams videos), and I listen to it perhaps every other day as I fall asleep, or as I take my exercise walks in a local nature reserve. Doing this has helped me in my discussions with other people about many topics. It helps me stay focused, level-headed, and (more often than not) happy in dealings with other adults. Perhaps most importantly, it has given me patience to help children explore the world around them, to answer their questions in ways that promotes their thinking, and to work towards a better world I hope they inherit.

ME TOO!!! My friends tell me that I was weird in my sleep sometimes (I sleep with headphones listening to Carl almost every night). I fall asleep muttering the end of Carl’s sentences, whenever he emphasizes something in a phrase, thank you for sharing this, at least now I know my immense admiration and love for the professor is being shared in a similar weird way!

I was privileged to attend two lectures by Carl Sagan in Portland, Oregon. He was joined by Ann Druyan in the second one. In the Q&A for one lecture, a person asked him, "how could you see the wonders of the world and not want to know God?" Sagan immediately answered, "how could you see the wonders of the world and not want to know science?" I cried the day he died.
The way this comment first appears it looks like it ends "Sagan immediately answered, Read more." lol!

Why oh why do the God deniers insist that investigation and discovery, which is the basis of science, and is intrinsic to the human condition, is incompatible with the existence of God?
And a second point: I am about 99.8% certain that the hunter gatherers he talks about, are much happier now with access to basic electricity and basic health. None of them would go back to their dark age fight for daily survival trying to follow the spoor of a herd of wild pigs. The evidence for that is to be found in all continents of the world where the extreme poor have been lifted out of the life and death struggle of daily life in squalor by simple access to electric light, water delivered to the home, a bicycle, and a clinic they can ride to. Get rid of the "noble savage" myth once and for all please.

In just two ears he, sadly, left us. He had so much vitality still, even to the last day.
I love him so much. The second best starts talking, and I hear his distinct and recognizable voice, I immediately feel good. Carl Sagan is a happy place for me.
He has the mind of a scientist and the heart of a poet. I find his lectures fill me with awe and wonder, not despair and hopelessness.

We need to preserve this planet . It`s the only one we will ever inhabit . Travelling to the nearest star would take us 81,000 years . Sagan however was an inspiration. We need to transfer his ideas back to this lonely planet .
When he was answering the "how you will be remembered" question and he jokingly mentioned "I hope this will not come for many years".... I cried. It had come just 2 years later. Man how I wish we could have seen more of this amazing scholar.
There are no better philosophers than scientists. And what amazes me is how well synched they all become the smarter they are. As if they grasp there is one fundamental truth about reality which is just too difficult to comprehend for the majority of the population.
In the past, in order to obtain a Ph. D., potential candidates had to master philosophy. Philosophy provides a lens through which actual scientists are able to decipher right from wrong free of bias. That's truly what education should be about- objectivity which coincides with ethics when it come to the etiology of knowledge.
I had to rewatch this after the unveiling of JWST's first photo. If anybody fully deserved to witness the age of space exploration, it's Carl Sagan.

I have listened to this lecture several times and I always cry at the end. A genius scientist, a brilliant communicator, a great human being with a quick wit and endearing sense of humor. He left humanity too soon.

The COSMOS will endure for years. It has for me, the body of work is a masterpiece of our time. I first read the Book when I was 11 some 41 years ago. What a humanitarian, will we see another in the next 100 years.

His Cosmos series on TV was such an amazing way of introducing complex cosmology to the common man in a simplistic but enlightening way, I have since read all his books, I miss you Carl Sagan.

Was just an elementary student when I watched Cosmos by Carl Sagan…. It is from this science series which gave me a basic understanding of life, our home planet, and the universe. Now I am almost 60 years old and I find his talks and lectures are still relevant today. Thank you so much, Carl Sagan.
Carl Sagan will continue to influence and shape astronomy and questions about our purpose here for centuries to come. Of that, I am certain.
His Pale Blue Dot speech alone will be remembered in a few centuries when we live on other planets and perhaps develop the technology to reach other stars.

I am completely speechless right now. Such incredible eloquence, clarity of thoughts, wealth of deep and diverse knowledge, oozing confidence and in general, an aura of authoritative presence - Dr. Sagan was truly once in a generation human being. His absence is direly felt. Given the state of the world which feels like slipping into ignorant vanity everyday surrounded by cloud of misinformation and superficial abhorrent display of short mindedness, we need more people like him who could reiterate to the world authoritatively those golden words of ‘our pale blue dot’. I feel privileged to be able to watch this lecture and understand the importance of his words. Thank you Dr. Sagan for once grazing this small speck of dust suspended in the cosmos and leaving your legacy for the time immemorial.
I met Carl Sagon as a teen & we had a great conversation, but one thing he told me stuck with me more than anything, "Question everything", Carl Sagon.
So many times in this video the topic of his lifespan comes up, whether it's someone looking forward to his 70th birthday, or how he's to be remembered one day, and it's truly heartbreaking to know that in two years time he'll be gone. And gone far too soon. How wonderful it would have been to hear his delight over the discoveries that have been made since then.

As a member of the Planetary Society, I was able to attend a symposium in Washington DC while the Shoemaker - Levy 9 comet was impacting Jupiter in 1994. It was AMAZING! Carl Sagan was the MC for the event (imagine that!) while Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker and David Levy spoke. It was an honor to hear him speak and I won't forget it as long as I live.

This man is BRILLIANT!! This is the first time I have listened to him. Now I will go and hunt youtube for anything on Carl Sagan. Such a pity he's not with us anymore.
It saddens me, that Carl had to pass, it would be so interesting to hear him deduce images, from Hubble, and James Webb. As a child he was the voice of cosmos, he introduced me to space, and words would make you imagination just work overtime. As I grow older, I still listen and watch his material. Such a smart human’s human being. Such hope for humanity, in an era of chaos. So outspoken, with a soft, stern, and professional, always recognizable voice. Rest In Peace, we will always miss you, and I thank God, for all of the recordings, and videos, you made. Your legacy will always live. Your golden record will hopefully live forever!

Carl Sagan was a inspirational, poetic, irreplaceable man. Our loss is immeasurable and I am another who still grieves him. What glorious genius!
What a man!! The universe is a poorer place since his passing, but we're unbelievably lucky to have had his wisdom and enthusiasm for 62 years. He's the closest I come to worshipping something..
I got the opportunity to hear him speak in the early 90s at my little local community college. He didn't just speak at ivy league schools. My friend went into labor that same day, and I told her she had a time limit and I wasn't missing the chance to hear my space dad speak. I missed the birth, but wouldn't change a thing. I was in a very religious household, and I am forever grateful for the light he shined in my dark world.

I was given Cosmos the book when I was a child. I owe much of my love if astronomy, art, history and science to that one book. The illustrations were spellbinding, but the text was life changing.
As was I. And as will my children whenever I have them.

I really feel privileged to listen to this wonderful Physics and life teacher, he truly had a privileged mind, which taught us to follow "the tireless search for truth" always with an open mind, and that was perhaps his greatest achievement.
I heard about him for a long time, but never had a chance to watch or listen. When I discovered his lectures and interviews few years ago I was blown away how precise and intelligent he was! I wish he lived longer and contributed more to science and popular science.
The last question Sagan answered before wrapping up the Q&A is particularly inspiring and deserves its own video.
I think Carl will be remembered for COSMOS, by everyone who saw the series.

Many of us who otherwise would have never had quality scientific instruction, not only recieved very good science lessons but the best scientific thoughts and concepts available, through professor Sagan's books. I cannot express sufficient gratitude for his legacy. We desperately need more people with his wit, his wisdom, his sharpness and his attitude. I just love him with all the strenght of my existence.
I love this scientist for not only his intelligence, but his compassion for the human race. I just realized he died only two years later. How very sad...❤

As a teacher of science, I was able to use the Cosmos series with my students. Most thought it was an amazing program, with so many interesting facts, stories and visual aides of the stars and planets, and of world history, the scientists of ancient times were shown in story format, just an incredible series, and even I learned something new every time we viewed this timeless production, If you haven't seen it, please do.
He is a huge inspiration. Legendary physicist, thinker and philosopher.
I so loved this man’s voice, his writing and his entertaining vision to teach louts like myself some meager understanding of physics and astronomy.

The end of that speech.. makes you stop and listen and crescendos with the hairs sticking up on the back of your neck. Truly one of humanities greatest thinkers delivering a monumentally historic speech.
ProfParzival, I heard part of this speech in Neil DeGrasse Tyson's edition of The Cosmos. It gave me goosebumps and made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I didn't' know the speech was part of this lecture; I got the same reaction again. Your comment was right on point!
