I'm from Greece and I consider English as my second language.
I feel lucky, being able to sit, drinking my coffee, gazing the sea and with my earphones enjoying this wonderful discussion.
And if you are doing that, you are among the people of this world who will help us to go beyond our problems and struggles.
That sounds really joyful. Same here, from Spain, and English has become second nature to me. As you said, I am really grateful to have (developed) the skills to enter these kinds of discussions (although it is captioned, but still I prefer the original version :) ).
And I'm from Iran and English became my second language for many reasons like my job, and now I can enjoy listening to this conversation and enjoy how they look at the universe..... There should be one language one county and no religion then we will expand our horizon in every aspect

But the opposite is not true, i.e., the English speaking peoples of the world, exactly because English has become the world's lingua franca, don't (bother to learn) know any other languages which, in some instances, can be a disadvantage. I, as a Portuguese native speaker (born and raised in portugal), can speak my own language and talk with about 250 million others from Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, etc. As an European who learnt French and German at school and university, I can establish a conversation with 100 million German speaking Europeans and a couple of hundreds of French speaking citizens of European, African countries and, oui, oui, Québécois in Canada and, on top of it all, because Spain is the only neighbouring country of Portugal, I can understand Spanish fairly well which means I can travel all over America and being able to communicate with everyone I meet. isn't it wonderful?

Everytime I read the news and see all the horrible things humans are capable of... I go outside at night, look up at the starry sky and stare at the moon for a moment - it's a habit of mine to remember that we are also capable of doing wonderful things, cause I refuse to get used to the fact that one day we've been there, on that giant boulder thousands of miles away, it is too amazing to get used to - I can hear the words in my mind “tranquility base here, the eagle has landed.”

There´s no intelligence but blindness and antiscience in pretending an Universe out of nothing, the Universe out of nothing and a Solar System out of hazzard, despite the fact that systems by empirical observation have a creator and the chances for the Earth to be at the right distance and have the right orbit and speed revolving around a sun which, unlike the other stars don´t produce any super flares to roast us, beliving such system would be the result of the chance and hazzard are slim to none... Furthermore as accretion can´t happen by the known laws of orbital solids mechanics, only creation remains the possible option, thus creation is proven true.
Wake up; for the life is short and ours even shorter, if you pretend to eventualy be ready to live the eternity in suffer we never experienced, l know it to be a sort of inconscience.
l am too somewhat old with 54, nevertheless l do care, at least a bit and certainly to little to avoid such eventuality.

There's no point. These days NDT is so full of himself and can't stop talking over everyone so that he can get in another story or description that makes him sound intelligent to an ignorant audience.

To reference this very talk, Neil's horizon these days begins and ends in a bubble around him and he doesn't give a damn what's out past it, as long as whatever it is thinks he's a 'big smarty guy'
It's a tragic loss to be honest. I used to love his talks. He did make it fun, despite oversimplifying concepts often to a detrement though because technical aspects would often actually be wrong because he simplified them so much. But he was great for kids and young people.

Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.
We can't get anything from "literally nothing." We can't even get science without God. The laws of nature only can come from a Lawgiver, God.

I didn't feel like Tyson gave the same respect to Dawkins. Tyson is sitting next to one of the most respected living evolutionary biologists and yet he talks about the subject like he's the expert. Still loved it though and big fan of both.

While I love both of these scientists, and think they are brilliant, it felt as if their interactions with each other were a bit strained. They seem to go about their explanations in very different ways. Tyson can be long-winded, and enjoys interrupting people when they're talking, but he's also very personable. Dawkins is far more serious, and likes to get his points across without interruption.
My guess is it has something to do with the audiences that both men are forced to deal with on a constant basis. While Tyson has to contend with a population that is generally apathetic to science and astronomy, Dawkins has to contend with people who are actively, vehemently against evolutionary theory and science in general. It hardens you.

He has to spend a lot of time repeatedly and forcefully explaining simple things to people who are heavily misinformed and propogandized about those things and who don't want to know or understand them. That's why he doesn't mind that Neal goes on long charming ramblings to explain things or that he interrupts when his head is full to bursting with ideas about what you're saying.

Loved this. Two of my favorite men of science in a room together, just talking about how awesome science is. I so wish I could have been there. I also like Neil's idea about aliens in Hollywood, that it's silly that they almost always tend to be anthropomorphic. Personally my favorite depiction of an extraterrestrial entity was in John Carpenter's The Thing (which is a film adaptation of J. W. Campbell's creature from his short story Who Goes There). That creature was alien in every way that counts.
But did you not find Dawkins' reply interesting? That separately evolving life on Earth often ends up looking similar to solve the same problems, or exploit the same ecological niche?

for me, the awesome thing about sci fi is that the focus can be on so many different things, whether it's verbally (books/stories) or visually (tv/movies) depicted. in "the thing" (and "who goes there"), the focus is on what kinds of bizarre life forms may be out there, so it's important that the alien not be anthropomorphic (unless it wants to be, hahah. spoiler alert? :P)
in star trek, most of the episodes are mini morality plays, so it's not that necessary to use bizarre life forms to get the point across (though there are some episodes where the focus is on that). plus, i can be charitable, because they used their budget on great external shots of ships and planets and stuff instead of aliens.
my final case in point is another wonderful short story called "the skills of xanadu". there are no aliens in it at all; many of those old stories and novels (like asimov's "foundation" trilogy) depict the galaxy in the far future, where humans have spread out far and wide. it also paints an interesting picture, where there's an Old Tongue, and people have forgotten where they originally came from. the focus of "xanadu" is not different species, but different cultures, and the surprises that may lay in store under the surface.
but again, the focus can be on anything. as for alien life forms, one of my favorite depictions is lovecraft's "the colour out of space". horrifyingly bizarre, and it's just a color! :D

Two of my favorite scientists, humans..i spend hours some nights watching them and and Christopher Hitchens too..i was late coming to CZcams and grateful a friend turned me onto all these fascinating talks.

Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.
We can't get anything from "literally nothing." We can't even get science without God. The laws of nature only can come from a Lawgiver, God.
