- In his first Christmas Lecture, American astronomer and cosmologist Carl Sagan explores planet Earth and the place, scale and geometry of the 'pale blue dot' in the Solar System.
Sagan provides a unique insight into the history of our knowledge of the third planet from the Sun, formed 4.5 billion years ago.
Using images and models of the planets in our Solar System, Carl reveals how the heliocentric model of our universe, in which the Earth and planets revolve around the sun, came to replace the earlier Aristotelian idea that our planet was at the centre and everything orbited around it.
As the complexity of observational tools has developed from simple telescopes to complex spacecraft, so too has our understanding of the world we inhabit. Looking back on the evolution in space science in the years since Carl Sagan's Lectures we have made huge advances in our understanding of our planet’s environment, climate, weather, geology and biology - as well as our relative place in the universe.

Life on Earth
Where at first we could only discern the size of our planet and some knowledge of its atmosphere and configuration, the evolution of planetary exploration has revealed not only intricate details of Earth’s climate and geology, but a multitude of stars and planets besides our own.
Beginning with a closer look at the world we inhabit, Carl explores of the diversity of life on our own planet and the building blocks behind it, before questioning whether the same organic chemistry is occurring on planets in the outer solar system.
The Red Planet
In Lecture three onwards, Carl takes a closer look at our neighbouring planet, Mars. From early interpretations of terrestrial life on its surface to the surprising discoveries made by NASA’s Viking Program, the Red Planet has become the focus of efforts to discern whether intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe.
When Carl delivered his Lectures in the late 1970s, NASA had only just begun its Voyager program to the furthest planets in our solar system and no extra-solar planets were known to exist. liminal6823 - Professor Sagan changed my life, too. It began with a normal Friday night trip to the movies for a group of 15 year olds in 1997, when we chose to see "Contact". That movie set off a quest for knowledge that has never diminished to this day. I'm 41 now, and still fascinated by the subjects Sagan talked about. The cosmos, physics, evolution, religion, philosophy, chemistry, SETI's mission (although I doubt we'll ever find anything proving intelligent life exists out there, I appreciate the reasons for looking and absolutely love the thoughts that come when I let my imagination follow the possibilities if we DID discover other intelligent life.)
Sadly, by the time I figured out the movie "Contact" was based on the book "Contact", and the name of the author was Carl Sagan, and I went looking for info on him... he had been gone for almost a year.
Since 1997, I've read every book he wrote, as well as a large number of his academic papers. I've watched the original "Cosmos" series at least 15-20× and have watched most of his lectures, thanks very much to CZcams! (Pre CZcams, even with the internet, finding these lectures was not easy.)
Just wanted to say hi 👋 to a fellow admirer of Carl Sagan's eloquent brilliance and his efforts to educate the masses. As I mentioned, his words changed my life. He directly influenced a 180⁰ turn in my academic trajectory. I only wish I'd known of him sooner.

Carl Sagan’s TV series made a great impression on me and I like many others who saw them, made life changing decisions as a result. Similarly his Christmas Lectures were also very influential in my change of career, leading to University studies and life time interest in Science and Astronomy. He was a very inspiring educator who had a talent for engaging with his audience and is very sorely missed. RIP Carl Sagan.

I grew up loving the RI Christmas Lectures but Carl's series was a bit too early for me.
What a wonderful communicator he was. I loved the level at which he pitched his delivery. Straightforward enough for young people to both understand and engage with yet not dumbed down in any way.
We used to watch these Xmas lectures in our house faithfully ever year , from Boxing day onwards if memory serves .
I remember this lecture well, he was astounding , so entertaining and interesting. It’s difficult to keep an audience in the palm of your hand for an hour but Carl Sagan did it with ease and poise . I also loved his series Cosmos which I watched avidly . Great scientist , better teacher and much better communicator, much missed

I wish Carl lived longer. He was a precious gift to the whole human population, with his vast knowledge and brilliant ability to express this knowledge in a way we all could understand. He still had so much to teach us. We still have very much to learn. Thank you for sharing this video.

When I have trouble sleeping the only thing other than music, is listening to Carl Sagan soothing lectures. Even debating his knowledge, control and presentation is always beautifuly delivered . Carl was a genius and a beacon of humanity.

Oh yeah... :) It would amaze him, but I'm sure he'd be on the track in few weeks. And just imagine how he felt back in those days, (way more prettier ) and at the end of his journey.. He was a BIG part of the team that sent Voyager1 & 2 in the vastness of space, and then 20 years later, calmly went away. Where? We'll never know..

I would give just about anything to see Carl Sagan lecture. Although i always fell asleep watching his show.
Carls Sagan’s words should be read out and considered by delegates before every gathering of world leaders. Now more than at any time previously his words resonate and are profoundly relevant. Considering he compiled The Pale Blue Dot in the 70’s, his concerns for the future of the planet were real then and have become ever more prophetic as the decades role on.
Dr. Sagan imagery of the cosmo is so inspiring! His presentation is very well explained and educational.
I think I'm about the age of many of those kids sitting there (now 61). How impressive it was then of what humanity already knew, back then in 1977. Compare with what we all know now. What amazing progress, Isn't it.

He was one of these beautiful souls/minds who made an everlasting impression on us. A unique human being with super intelligence and intellectuality. My belief is that he is out there, exploring a completely different universe.
The Voyagers explored the outer solar system to a great degree. From knowing very little to quite a bit of detail of the planets and their rings and moons.
The Voyagers STARTED the exploration. We now have pictures and some information there is so much more to see! It saddens me that people are now more focussed on tearing each other down rather than seeing what's over the next hill. As a species, we really are shrinking. So sad.

I remember when young, my father gifted my school with a model of the solar system like the one used by Dr. Sagan in this video. Hopefully it opened a few curious young minds besides mine.

It's amazing to think that this lecture was for young people. Try getting kids today to pay attention without constantly having to entertain them.
My favorite cross Sagan book was Contact. Yes it comes under the category of fiction and of course using many of his theories in the writing of said book but it was just wonderful nonetheless.
As far as his series cosmos, It was the 1st truly expansive piece of work that catered to the intellect of the average American. He simply put things in terms that were Suddenly Understandable to those other than specialists in their field of astronomy including astrophysics.
And on a lighter side, Carl Sagan was one of the best of Johnny Carson's regular guests. And for those of you that are too young to know my reference to Johnny Carson he was considered the ultimate late night talk host. It was the template for all the following acts like Dave Letterman Jay Leno Jimmy Kimmel, et cetera.
He was great on Carson and the conversations were always lengthy and in depth. There was substance there, which is sorely lacking in most talk shows today.

I have a “decent”, small, modern telescope. And there’s no way it has the magnification to be able to zoom into Venus enough to see phases. So, I always bring into doubt their assertion when historians talk about Galileo’s “first telescope”, such as Dr. Sagan does here (16:17). I do not doubt Galileo did so, I just doubt it was the “first telescope”. I imagine it took him many, MANY different builds to be able to accomplish this.

I have actually thought of that novel every few years, as the Dad to a Daughter with way more math / science ability than I have -- had to drop P-Chem and Diffy-Q in college and change Major from ChemE

@@ActionJackson669 I just checked. This was 1975. He says at the start that it is 150 Years since the start of the Farraday Lectures. That was 1825. So it is 1975. And still worth watching!

Hardly. The lecture was a year in the making, it took months to make the props. He's a little more wooden and not yet as comfortable in his public persona as he later came to be.

Think of the time & resources wasted on this tiny planet in the 1950’s & ‘60’s by 2 countries separately trying to do exactly the same things - get into space, get humans into space, then land a man on the moon . One human effort would have been sensible, involve the best brains, & cheaper.
Yes, I do know about the history of the time. I lived through it. It never made any sense.

Wow so this is before Voyager was launched. And now here it is almost 5 decades later and only last year we launched the James Webb.
Whats really interesting is he talks about the moons of jupiter and saturn and how each only has a handful. Today we know thats not the case. Saturn has I believe 82 moons that we know of.

This series of lectures should be remastered! The fact that they haven't been, as is apparent from this neandrethal version, is a testament to laziness of someone. And I consider that a travesty!
