CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Christof (Ed Harris) speaks to Truman (Jim Carrey) in one last ditch effort to keep him from leaving the show.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Peter Weir directed this comedy-drama, a commentary on all-pervasive media manipulation. Scripted by Andrew M. Niccol (Gattaca), the film plays like a combination of the British TV series The Prisoner and Paul Bartel's The Secret Cinema. Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) is unaware that his entire life is a hugely popular 24-hour-a-day TV series. In this real-time documentary, every moment of Truman's existence is captured by concealed cameras and telecast to a giant global audience. His friends and family are actors who smile pleasantly at Truman's familiar catchphrase greeting, "In case I don't see you later, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!" Employed at an insurance company, Truman is married to merry Meryl (Laura Linney), and they live in the cheerful community of Seahaven, an island "paradise" where the weather is always mild and no unpleasantness intrudes. This is the basic situation of the series, which has grown over the years into a billion-dollar franchise for the TV network. As an unwanted pregnancy, Truman was adopted by the network and raised in the zoolike environment of a TV soundstage. Thus, the TV audience became hooked when Truman was very young. Now, at age 30, he still doesn't know he's a prisoner on an immense domed city-size soundstage, simulating Seahaven. Both the illusion and the ratings will collapse if Truman ever leaves Seahaven. In addition to elaborate events staged to make sure he stays put, Truman is given constant reminders of how wonderful Seahaven is compared to dangers in other parts of the world. However, his growing suspicions make him curious enough to try to leave, and the show's director and master manipulator Christof (Ed Harris) must constantly devise ways to thwart Truman's escape attempts. To enter the harbor, Truman must overcome his fear of water, intentionally instilled in him when his father "died" in a boating accident and was written out of the script. Exteriors were filmed in the Victorian-styled upscale community of Seaside, Florida. In addition to the Burkhard Dallwitz score, original music by Philip Glass and classical excerpts are also featured.

We all live like that;we are bound to the laws of the universe. We are in control of how we choose to follow, bend or break those laws and enjoy/suffer the consequence, in the big scheme of things.. But Truman was not in the big scheme. He was kept away from it-every choice he made was through the power of suggestion. The only thing he could choose was to step out of it. Which to me symbolizes self-euthanasia. It's like with stalking: it stops when tne perp or the victim dies.

What I found chilling was that very last shot of the two cops. The way they just accepted the ending of the show, this masterpiece of reality TV, and simply flick the channel to see what else is on. Truman has spent his whole life being watched by the world, and it's over just like that. Such a fantastic film
I think that's a critique to modern TV consumerism: Truman is just intertaiment after all and, once this "product" is used and finished, something new has to be find simply by moving to another channel.

One thing I noticed, at 0:37
When Christoff said that he watched Truman taking his first steps, Truman looked down. Not because he is touched by Christoff's "love", but because he figured that his life was manipulated and robbed away from him ever since he took those first steps. That realization broke him.

The lawsuit that followed would be delicious
Within their universe, nothing they were doing was illegal.
@@waltermalone216 i think it was stated in the actual movie they were LEGALLY about to adopt 1 out of 3 babies, a firsy for a TV company or something
trying to kill some illegal, imprision, not to mention all the money they made from using him, where was his share
If it was illegal, it would've been terminated years ago. Most of the audience seems to be fine with it as well.
Yeah in-universe they said he was the first baby ever legally adopted by a corporation. They probably had a ton of lawyers working basically 24/7 to keep the show going, because we do see that there's a fairly sizeable movement of people who believe what the show is doing is wrong and would have likely filed many lawsuits against the network over the years.
I can see it being permitted to carry on as long as Truman appears happy with his life -- no damages, no harm generally being a legal standard. The network would probably argue that Truman is being well cared-for and has a happier life than most. Of course the fact that he's essentially imprisoned is fundamentally harmful even if he's unaware of his imprisonment, but I guess in the movie universe the lawyers managed to hold off that argument somehow.
Surely once Truman leaves the studio he'll have some very serious compensation coming to him, and yes, at least the threat of a lawsuit, which would realistically be enough to make the network settle with him for a huge sum regardless. I would also imagine that the network would probably want to stay on Truman's good side as much as possible after his departure, as the follow up interviews and retrospectives would be very lucrative for them as well, now that their main cash cow is gone.
What if he just stepped out of Studio A and walked into Studio B....

Yes, yes. Precisely! 👏🏼✊
In his sick and twisted mind truman was probably his "son", and he was the caring and benevolent father
@@temporaneo617 I don't even think it was father/son. It was almost more like pet/owner, with the owner just exploiting the pet for ego. Note he says the "episode" where he lost his first tooth. Not the moment, not the time; the "episode". Truman was just a figure in a show to him, a figure and a show he could manipulate like God for ratings and acclaim. If you recall that this show is partly a commentary on God's relationship with man, it'll make you understand how God is basically just ego for control. A figure that wants to be seen as benevolent and caring, but in reality is manipulative, spiteful and insecure, who needs you to depend on him or he is meaningless.
@@Zzyzzyzzs that's a very interesting interpretation! I hadn't thought of it that way
Zzyzzyzzs I like this interpretation of yours, reminds me of biblical tales
What an underrated performance by Ed Harris. In lesser hands this would've been a caricature, but the sincerity in his face and voice almost undercuts (or does it highlight?) the character's creepiness.
I was just thinking that. What a unique antagonist.
I know this comments old but I don’t think it’s underrated. Didn’t he get nominated for an Oscar for this movie?
This scene perfectly shows Christophs view of Truman: Truman is a pet for him. A very lucrative pet of course, but still he is convinced that he provides the best possible world him. And that's a key to every good villain: Knowing that they could be wrong, but still holding on to their delusions - and the violence they're imposing on their own conscience goes hand in hand with the violence against the world.
siopao2001 From what I read, Christoff didn’t have a nice childhood. So creating this perfect world for Truman is his sort of twisted gift, while also putting himself in complete control, a true God complex. I believe Christoff genuinely loves Truman, and in his own warped way he has given Truman a perfect life. A hot wife, successful career no matter what he does, a beautiful house, friends, etc. Seahaven literally revolves around Truman. But Truman doesn’t want perfection, he wants freedom, flaws and all. I don’t think Christoff was all that devastated at losing his cash cow. I think he was heartbroken in that Truman rejected his “perfection”, the only thing Christoff ever sought. Ed Harris is amazing
Apparently he prepared himself for this role in a couple days as the original actor quit. Pretty impressive.
After he stepped out the real world the reporters probably wouldn't let him live a peaceful life. They would wonder what will happen to him or what he is going to do now. Even the people in the comments wonders it. The people who hopefully watches him getting rid of this life in front of their tvs probably would wonder what will happen to him next. He has to live with cameras even after this show and it is very sad. Eventually, he will be forgotten but every now and then there will be news like "What happened to that Truman guy?"
I am sure he is ok with being forgotten
Hay that guy Lei from the tea shop.... hes fire lord now

No grieves or hate from Truman when he leave the show. He just do a reverence and say a happy good bye to all the people who watched him during those decades. How can't you like such a nice man ?
That's the only thing I don't like about this movie. I means sure I like the fact that the viewers shown on the movie care about Truman more than the show. But in real life there's always gonna be a selfish rabid group that's been entertained by the show so much that to kill that entertainment would ruin them psychologically.
Shanethefilmmaker the concept of the show is just like big brother those that are invested in the show will continue to hope for the best. True fans would understand Truman’s choice to exit the show. And move on to a better life. It’s implied when you see the elder ladies or diner patrons cheering and crying for him.
@@Shanethefilmmaker you'll probably not even notice this or already have found this later on, but 1:56-1:58 Truman's smile turns into a furious scowl. he doesn't know what life will be like outside of the dome, but he knows that the good bit of it has been ruined and it has probably ruined it from now on. Even in the real world, his reputation will never leave even when people forget. But every now and then someone will go and say: "Whatever happened to that Truman guy?"
No he drops the face immediately as he turns away; he’s pissed, which is why he says “you never had a camera in my head”. Him saying that is making fun of the creator and the show.

I’ve always seen the line “well say something goddamn it you’re on television” is the most human we see the creator. It’s like in that brief moment he smiles, cracks a laugh, saying Truman to say something, not for entertainment, but take this chance to say something you want to the whole world. It’s like for a very short moment he accepted the fact that Truman has entered reality
Nah I think it was 100% for entertainment. He was frustrated that Truman was just silent at seemingly the climax of his show and he was like ‘well don’t make it awkward! Say something witty!’
And by god he did.

Us individuals related not only to society but also to all of its different kind of boundaries (politics, religion, consumerism, moral). In this case imo religion is the topic: the last resource to induce us to fear and to search for a senseless relief, when nothing else has convinced us. The fact that his name's Christoff and speak from the sun between clouds (actually, when he starts talking to Truman he says: "I'm the creator... of a TV show that blahblah") are pretty symbolic of that.
93hothead It's called allegory, shithead.
The Truman Show was a great movie for a lot of reasons. A TV Show watched by the whole World about one man on a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year Big Brother. It was a great idea but also it showed the World that Jim Carrey was a much better actor than we gave him credit for. This end scene is kind of sad because Truman now knows that his whole life has been a lie. He's crashed into the wall aboard his ship and now he wants to leave. Ed Harris was brilliant as Christof and Oscar nominated for the role. He's telling him how much he knows about him, and has looked after him since he's been in Seahaven and why he wants him to stay. But Truman doesn't want to be there anymore and leaves with his final line. In case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight! Then he simply walks out the door.

Such a powerful scene, Amazing acting from all characters and great lines being said. He learned that there was merchandise and things of that nature and when he sees the moon for the first time it almost brings him to tears. He sees Hollywood and when he confronts the creator of the show he desperately asks if anything in his life was real. Truman also almost pushes him off a roof. Finally we see that Truman and Sylvia are married with a daughter and are living their lives on a beach while there is a new TV show about a baby named Zoe, thus coming full circle with a new star/show.
2:01 Truman left the game.
I’ve only just watched this movie but dear god the mental trauma of knowing your life was fake from birth only to step into the real world this was a great movie
This is like a metaphor for overprotective parents.
Omg
One of the best movie scenes preformed. Art in motion, the way the actors converse is real tense, the way the emotions rush through your head makes you feel for Truman, such a brilliant film that couldent be played by anyone better, the lines said by actors are deep and the scenes where you know he’s clueless just put so much meaning into the movie, absolutely amazing film and I recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it to go watch it.
There is no background music on the scene shown, absolute perfection, knowing he is alone where he is but at he same time together makes your head rush with emotions and really drills in the idea that Truman is really thinking about his decision.
This movie has SO many metaphors for things we all deal with on a daily basis. Really, a truly brilliant film.
I always thought they should've reworked it so that when he here's the line "I watched your first step" he answers "No, this is my first step" and then he goes through the door
And he wouldn't have missed that step either
+plumlogan too cheesy
+Anthony Fake agree
Too on the nose.
Cheesy.
Got goosebumps again when I watched this here.
he seemed to be genuinely scared to step through that door but the words gave him the courage to walk through. not sure if the shows creator was trying to persuade him to stay or to leave. I guess that up to everyone to decide.
One of the most epic, satisfying endings i've ever watched. this is what we call PERFECTION!
I love Peter Weir's work! EVERY movie he ever made was outstanding! He is one, if not the most underrated director ever.
I never took Jim Carey seriously as an actor until I saw him in this film, truly inspiring.
Honestly one of the best Jim carry performances. just great
i love the monument he walks out that door nothing were cut off just like everyone else
Can you imagine how freaked out he'll get when he sees his face on posters, billboards, paparazzi everywhere, reporters hassling him for interviews? Not to mention none of the stuff on the show set look like the real world. Like perfect houses with perfect neighbors and perfect buildings with perfect streets surrounding it. Everything would be mind blowing to him.
It would drive me into depression if I found out my entire 30+ years of life was all a tv act and nothing was real. I wouldn't be able to trust anyone or anything anymore. I wish they would have done a part 2 of his afterlife off the show.
Say something
Truman: I'm taking your ases to court
“In case I don’t see you, good afternoon, good evening, and goodnight.”
Love that final moment of him stepping literally into the darkness. The great unknown. The undiscovered country. And with a smile on his face. We can read it literally - as Truman undergoing a major change, a "death" in the sense of the Tarot card. But we can also read it allegorically. It's the "death" of Truman, that is, Truman the character. He steps across the threshold and is dissolved. He emerges as something new, something no longer Truman. He accepts it with grace. One of my favourite movie endings of all time.
Ironic how this guy was forced to live his life in front of a camera, when these days people do it willingly through social media
Technically you are unwillingly, your phone mic is always on and probably your camera too lol. You're feeding the corporate machine with every search and convo
@Daniel Johnson your comment was collected by big tech just now. Everyone is surveiled, not just people who post. Watch the Joe Rogan Edward Snowden podcast, you should already know this..
Yep some people love being the center of attention .
A Non Nymous no he means like the people who put the videos on CZcams or FB, obviously everyones demographics are being sold out. But the way some stupid people turn their lives into a reality TV show nowadays, like some parents on YT that put their kids in videos. Those people are like the Truman show.
The ending of this film is absolute perfection! Wow!
Easily one of my favorite movies of all time....so many iconic moments
I love how you can't see what is beyond the doorway. Truman is boldly stepping into the unknown.
Free your mind. The Earth is a triangle.
Thx jimmy
LOL
BEST! EXIT! EVAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!
such a philosophically packed movie. the underlying themes are fantastic. descartes would be proud
The ending always gets me. Total masterwork of a movie.
i love how the otherwise heartwarming speech by the creator sounds absolutely horrifying from truman's perspective. "i was there when you took your first steps"
This scene always puts a smile on my face. Beautiful movie, true masterpiece!
The producer seems like he can melt mountains with his words.
I love the beautiful metaphor here, that being a conversation between you and what essentially the god of everything you have ever known, and you just wanting to see more
Then when asked why you want to leave- delivers an iconic line
Metokur went out on this
Ralph won
1:38 That’s the best line to wreck someone when there never going to see each other again XD
“In case I don’t see ya, good morning, good evening, and goodnight.”
The words that express free will
I loved how he bowed to exit, just felt so perfect
