    This scene is great because Will displays what we all aspire to be - a well rounded man. A man who is intelligent, articulate, loyal to his friends even to the point of a brawl if needed. This is opposed to the pony tail guy who was clearly intelligent but cowardly and malicious. it's about as easy as acting heroic...because in both cases it's acting. There's the talent of the actor, the writers, the production crew, and the direction that all come together to create the moment as a whole. And yet here we sit in a day and age where everyone and their grandmother thinks praising only the singular small part actor that is playing an antagonistic role is some noble or intelligent commentary. @Dootie Fair point.
      Equally fair point is that the only point Will actually makes against ponytail guy, his unlikeable trait in the scene, is that he's the kind of guy that pretends to be smart by reciting word for word everything he's ever learned, without actually trying to develop his own thoughts on what he's learning about, and he's just out to score some girls by reciting that stuff to make his friend look small.
      So to ask for your original thought on the matter, how exactly am I him when I'm not the guy reciting what you can read practically verbatim from any comment section featuring a clip from a show or movie with an unlikeable character in it? I'm not out to make anyone look stupid for saying it, if that's the read people are getting from that I apologize. and yet you and two other guys come sliding by, scroll down, see this and rather than stop to think about what's being said instantly jump on the train of "lol that guy called him ponytail guy, I should do the same"
      If your purpose is to support the og comment, I'd love to hear your side of it, if your purpose is to poke fun at me or insult me, you could at least try to be original, but when you come at me with the same comment 2 other guys before you came at me with days before you, i don't know what you want me to say that hasn't already been said.

    I have a Ph.D in Neuroscience. I can say with no doubt that exactly what is happening in this scene is relatively common. People with advanced 'degrees' always want to steer the conversation to an area that they have some knowledge...too make themselves seem smart. i learned long ago that although i know quite a bit about neuroscience, i don't know shit about plumbing, carpentry, wiring, fixing cars, fixing small engines, roofing, etc. But the world is full of people with degrees like mine who believe they have superior intellect They don't. They could never survive without the 'stupid' people who make their life functional.

      Yeah I've spoken to a few medical doctors that are like that, and believe it or not a lot of nurses like that as well. They will only ever talk about things from a medical perspective, and act smart since nobody knows what they're talking about. A lot of people will be interested until after a few conversations where you get sick of hearing about different patients. Some lawyers may do something similar, engineers do it less often since they know everyone is bored by what they talk about. The trick is to directly challenge them: "Can we talk about something that isn't X?" This puts them way out of their comfort zone and the results are actually kinda funny

Thanks to their well exercised imagination which our culture as a whole try desperately to make certainly impossible by never sustaining the lazy kind as well as insulting and talking down. Very few people would choose American colonial economics for pleasure reading. Unless this is your specific area of study (American Colonial times or the history of economics), even the greatest of geniuses would likely only know generalities about such an obscure topic, and even then, only when it touches on their actual interests (such as the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean).

Good Will Hunting speaks to what you’re saying by depicting both prodigy’s like Will and intellectuals like Skyler who have a specific field of study and don’t choose to read everything even if they’re uninterested in a certain topic. In fact, Skyler says this to Will during their lunch scene when she asks him why he would want to study organic chemistry for fun, because no one enjoys it. That’s how good the movies writing is...Will knows everything about everything because he never had a guide, he found comfort in studying everything, probably to escape his abuse and trauma. That’s what separates Will from the other characters, not all the smart ones know everything. The reason Robin Williams’s character Sean is knowledgeable about multiple topics like Will, is because they both had similar upbringings.

    • @adamkaye2358
      @adamkaye2358 Před 3 lety +37

      Yea. And what people are taught in college only applies to our regular lives in the slightest of ways. Life is too complex and personal that scholars who try to theorize our existence and experiences fail. They focus on the wrong things, at least in my experience from college. Life is about achievement, relationships, hobbies. We learn about ancient philosophies and postmodern literature and economics. Why? I'm not opposed to learning about these random, almost pointless topics because it does challenge your thinking. However, it annoys me that professors and famous theorists think they are providing us with knowledge that reaches an understanding of some component of life. Again, our experiences are so unique, we have different priorities, our brains are different, some people are caring and understanding, others are cold and self-incognizant. Life and how I experience it is unique to me. College constrains you to a tight box of academic bullshit. If you write a paper, you must agree with some established school of thought. You must think in a way that reflects academic thinking and established theories. You are brainwashed into thinking that theorists know best, and whether or not they have the right answers, you still need think and write in a way that follows their theoretical, academic framework. In other words, even if you disagree with the theorists of study, you must stay close enough to their ideas or else you will be penalized. In short, college teaches students that their interpretations of their own life and experiences are not necessarily wrong but insignificant. Professors praise famous theorists as the former dreams of becoming the latter. Through this praise, they shove extremist theorists down your throats, and you are led to believe that these theorists have good ideas that relate to your own life. I am not saying that life is completely subjective and relative. I'm also not saying it is objective. However, I'm saying life is too nuanced and personal to be subjective or objective. Life is neither. The furthest a discussion on ontology should go is that we exist and exist as individuals. Except academia takes these discussions to an extreme and forces students to join the box of academia: a box that contains theories of which are recycled through the blind use of intertextuality and perpetuated by simpleton professors. Outside this box is humanity and the unique individuals that make it up.
