CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Truman (Jim Carrey) is confused by a lighting rig that falls from the sky, but the radio announcer provides an easy explanation.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Peter Weir directed this comedy-drama, a commentary on all-pervasive media manipulation. Scripted by Andrew M. Niccol (Gattaca), the film plays like a combination of the British TV series The Prisoner and Paul Bartel's The Secret Cinema. Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) is unaware that his entire life is a hugely popular 24-hour-a-day TV series. In this real-time documentary, every moment of Truman's existence is captured by concealed cameras and telecast to a giant global audience. His friends and family are actors who smile pleasantly at Truman's familiar catchphrase greeting, "In case I don't see you later, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!" Employed at an insurance company, Truman is married to merry Meryl (Laura Linney), and they live in the cheerful community of Seahaven, an island "paradise" where the weather is always mild and no unpleasantness intrudes. This is the basic situation of the series, which has grown over the years into a billion-dollar franchise for the TV network. As an unwanted pregnancy, Truman was adopted by the network and raised in the zoolike environment of a TV soundstage. Thus, the TV audience became hooked when Truman was very young. Now, at age 30, he still doesn't know he's a prisoner on an immense domed city-size soundstage, simulating Seahaven. Both the illusion and the ratings will collapse if Truman ever leaves Seahaven. In addition to elaborate events staged to make sure he stays put, Truman is given constant reminders of how wonderful Seahaven is compared to dangers in other parts of the world. However, his growing suspicions make him curious enough to try to leave, and the show's director and master manipulator Christof (Ed Harris) must constantly devise ways to thwart Truman's escape attempts. To enter the harbor, Truman must overcome his fear of water, intentionally instilled in him when his father "died" in a boating accident and was written out of the script. Exteriors were filmed in the Victorian-styled upscale community of Seaside, Florida. In addition to the Burkhard Dallwitz score, original music by Philip Glass and classical excerpts are also featured.

I just realized the radio only plays old classical music because it’s public domain and they wouldn’t have to pay for copyright
Plus the added bonus on Christof's ego. He believes his show is classy. Though odds are they do have some licenses for other songs. The song that Marlon was playing to distract Truman from gazing at Sylvia was more jazzy than classical and I might be a novice on Jazz, but I think only few jazz songs are public domain.
Funnily enough classical music isnt and is one of the most fought over copyrights. See the thing is that the sheet music is public domain but the moment it is played it no longer is.
@@templephilosophy405 yes but it's for a different reason, not for the music itself but because someone must play it, so while the music is public domain the orchestra who plays it is a private entity which can ask for its royalties.
@@leonardoflorentin That is exactly what I said. The sheet music is public domain but when it is played it no longer is.
😲
0:58 Wow! I just realized that the spotlight had "Sirius (9 Canis Major)" written on it. "Sirius" is the brightest star visible at night. Which mean the spotlight was just one of the fake stars that they had inside the dome!
How did i miss something so obvious?
+Alkan's Bot yeah that's kind of the whole point of the scene.. :P
+Alkan's Bot It's really weird. I instantly saw it when the writing on the spotlight appeared in the movie when I watched it. And I was like "haha, I see, cool!" for myself. I realized now when I saw your comment that it's easy to miss.
I don't know.
lol, I noticed the writing, but never clicked on the whole star thing, I just thought it was symbolic... having the first thing to fall as a light
vy canis majoris was also the biggest known star at the time
If this whole show actually existed, it's insane how well-choreographed everything is.
Over 25 years in the making
Not really. The only elbow grease they'd have to put in is to either:
A. Act like certain job aspects as real as possible. As proven when the intercity bus driver couldn't work the bus or the ferry, because until Truman escaped, they never had to use them.
B. Keep Truman in front of Product Placements and keep cameras on him.
C. Keep him from leaving.
Other than that, it seems like a piece of cake. Just walk around like you live there and only say hi to Truman when Christof says so.
Shanethefilmmaker they wouldn’t have to act normal because he’s grown up around the way they act if u know what I mean
@@erlend6338 Good point. Make his view on society the easiest for the Show's Crew.
@@Shanethefilmmaker A cakewalk yes, but a very big cake. Not impossible though, just on a very very VERY big scale.
I read that Truman’s catchphrase “In case I don’t see you, good afternoon, good evening, & good night” is Truman’s way (albeit, without him knowing) of addressing the viewers in different time zones around the world
Sometimes the comments are way too interesting than the video itself,so so much enlightening.😊👍👍
Yeah, I easily imagine his fake parents saying that everyday to all the other actors and prompting him to do the same.
1000th like
Thank you for this explanation. I just watched this movie and the whole catchphrase thing was really confusing and I couldn’t figure it out. Just feels out of place. These comments does make it more understandable.
Wrong.
If he was born and raised in this kind of environment, with the strange way the people act, how would he know that it doesn't seem to be normal.
because a light bulb came crashing down from the sky. don't think he's used to that in his "normal" environment.
Kim Le well it was excused as a landing light
yohiyoyo1 yeahh. i'd be pretty suspicious if that was called a landing light when i heard and saw nothing in the sky afterwards. i don't know, though. u'm probably just suspicious by nature.
What is real in Seahaven?
Asia Brisco Truman
Only took me until recently to realise those twins back him up against that poster for product placement. I always thought they were meant to just be the comic relief of the Truman Show.
Omg yes!!!
Oh dang took me 8 yrs to realise 😹
wow this is so cool
I always thought they did it because they were still setting up the scene around the corner
Well, it's both. Comic relief side characters to entertain the audience, and product placement.
It's a win win for everyood.
the production design in this movie is amazing
Not really when it's a real place , good scouting I guess.
Seaside Florida...very cool place looks just like it is in the movie, up near Pensacola.
Hey I just wanted you to come back and see this one last time
It really is!
not really at all. The actor who plays Truman (Jim Carry) was ALMOST KILLED BY A FALLING LIGHT. not only that, the editors forgot to cut it out! Horrible movie
sorry for 6 years late reply
I can't imagine the amount of ad sponsorship that would have to be pulled together to keep this show running.
they say in the show that anything is sold as merch
@@dustyrose192 I can't believe it..an Unus in the wild?!
and when the twins back him up against the poster it’s probably for advertisment!!
@@laurensharpe137 It really is, because you can see the camera zooming in on the logo.
It's the most watched show in the world in universe, so I imagine sponsorships are not cheap.
0:19 the bin has a camera in it, so the dog is used to distract Truman so he doesn't see it
His ring has a camera on it too, everything is a camera if physically possible
Yep. And at 0:48 when he's picking up the light fixture you can see cameras embedded on every side of his fenceposts also.
A handle for all he knows
Also it's so the dog gets his scent if they ever need to find him, which is shown later in the movie
The dog isn’t to distract him. Those cameras are all over the town, one on a bin wouldn’t be noticeable.
2:05 Wow, I just now realized they pushed him up against that wall for advertising... Mind = Blown!

I'm a big fan of Liar Liar but this has to be my favorite
If this inevitably gets a remake, I’d love to see it completely from Truman’s perspective. No hidden camera shots, no audience cutaways, no behind the scenes stuff, just a man who’s beginning to believe that his reality is slowly coming apart at the seams. Is he living in a giant TV show that he’s the star of or is he just a paranoid schizophrenic who’s mind is finally shattering? Are these events staged or is it all just explainable coincidence? Is he the only real thing in his town or is he just losing his mind?
Be a great thriller even if the audience already knows the truth.
Inevitably? Seems like quite the bold claim lol why do you think it could happen?
"IF this INEVITABLY gets a remake..."
🤖 Can't process... paradox!
If I remember correctly, the original script for the movie was a lot darker in tone.
I like to compare it to Alfred Hitchcock's lecture on suspense. About panning to a bomb under a table that will go off in 5 minutes. Give the audience that information, and it makes the entire scene tense. If they don't know about it, then a bomb just goes off, less tension. Now, that's about suspense, but the core of it lies in giving the audience information. I think making us aware that it's a show allows us to feel more, simply, when we see the events unfold.
James Bootywolfe I don't think it can be made as a remake unless they go with their original concept. I was fortunate enough to be able to read the initial scripts at Miami Ad school. It was so dark, there's no way they could've sold it with Carrey as the lead. If they remake it, it has to adhere to the darker elements. It's set in a delapidated impoverished form of a New York esque city, and a billionaire has created a reality television programme that subdues and keeps occupied millions of unhappy people following his every step. Much more violence, much more violent paranoia and still a 'happy' but dark ending all the same.
0:15 That should be the worst hidden camera in the Truman Show.
I think it’s from his wedding ring. I guess if he’s been brought up to think that’s what all wedding rings look like then the camera probably didn’t seem too suspicious to him
Charizarzar he means the trashcan haha
0:54 1:40 2:05 And on the gate posts, by the news stand, and on the billboard.
Haha 😂
I never noticed it (or the date on your comment ) until now.
The newsagency store has dog and children magazines outfront, to make Truman think of having kids and liking dogs. And they're hiding the travel magazines so Truman won't think about travelling.
but if they allowed him to have kids, they must introduce a woman who is willing to let her children live in that show.
@@alspezial2747 his wife was willing, she doesn't care about the kid if she was getting rich from her role. i mean she lied to his face and never cared.
@@flamingchickin there is a difference between lying to a man and letting your child live a lie.
but i have not watched the movie in years so you might be right.
@@alspezial2747 In a deleted scene they covered that. She was going to be introduced as someone for Truman to have am affair with, she would have been a willing participant as an actress with a contract and allowed said child to be born. The network was then going to follow the child on a different channel, running simultaneously with The Truman Show.
Geez, when you start looking for the camera they're everywhere
There's cameras on the white posts, a camera on the bin, a camera above the Kaiser Chicken poster.
0:46 The black spots on those white posts are hidden cameras placed to capture every direction.

I think a lot of viewers remain with your first impression. There is a deep darkness to _The Truman Show_, but I think some of the slapstick comedy shrouds that understanding.
0:21 It's great storytelling. Only time he lets his guard down and stops smiling - that's why they made the show: to show the "true man" behind the cordial facade we put on every day.
Truman truman… TRUEMAN
I just realised that when the guy on the radio asks his audience if they're thinking of flying anywhere, they were just checking if Truman was thinking of leaving town
If you look close enough, everything in this damn movie is a camera, even the camera!
I just rewatched this movie, and I picked up on the symbolism in his name! I think that Truman's last name is Burbank as in Burbank, California, the city named the "media capital of the world" where countless entertainment and film companies are based, referring to how manufactured and produced his life is. Anyone agree?
Agree
not to mention "Truman" b/c he's the only true man in the entire city
love how they turn the falling light gaffe into the perils of flying segway lol. dont fly truman, planes out here shedding parts

Jethro Jackson well it’s their opinion
In hindsight the entire city looks unrealistically clean

1:13 Truman listening to the radio and the radio announcer is asking (him) ques. and having a dialog (with Truman) but Truman doesn't recognize that, not yet anyway... great scene there.
What if the spotlight was dropped on purpose by one of the technicians?
We see later on that former actors have broken on to the set to try and rescue him, but it would be easy for Truman to rule them out as crazy.
20 years ago today, this masterpiece was released!
2:11 , just found out they pushed him to the board for product placement.
I love how everything from trashcans to lightpoles has a black bulb showing just how many cameras there are.
"In case i don't see you, Good Afternoon, Good Evening, and Good Night"
I want those words to be said by Carrey before he *leaves the Entertainment Industry for good*
Interesting that Truman was scared of the dog even though it looked friendly. Near the climax of the movie we see that dog again and he looks like he would have attacked Truman if he found him. Shows that he had pretty good instincts despite his repressive upbringing.
During the interview scene it was shown that they made truman afraid of dogs so he wouldn't wander on his own
I saw someone else point out that that dog was specifically trained to find Truman in case he ever got lost on the set
The camerawork is consistently incredible. I know it wouldn't have been a typical choice, but how was this not nominated for cinematography?
You know if the radio guy hadn't said an airplane was falling apart in midair to explain why the spotlight fell (or made up a different excuse) it probably wouldn't have caused Truman to question his reality because most likely he has never seen an airplane in the air throughout his entire life.
This had great potential for a sequel showing the aftermath of all this and Truman adjusting to the real world.
Jim is such a great actor. To think two years before this he played Chip in the cable guy. Truman and chip being two opposing characters.

What a story what an idea what a movie what an actor
“Good morning!…Oh and in case I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and goodnight.”
The hints in this movie are amazing. The news talking about aircraft accidents a bunch, and then asking Truman about whether he wants to travel or not just to make sure that Truman isn't thinking about leaving. The detail here is amazing!
It helps me push my political narrative 😂
Majority of my childhood went thinking I was living constantly under cameras, and I had not even seen this movie then
We're all living..in a Truman show...
Lmao my audiences would be bored
One of my most memorable lines from Jim Carrey!
2:05 Notice how the twins position Truman at precisely the right angle so the cameras can see the advertisement. I love when directors add details like that into their films.
It's glad to know that both of those twins were police officer / security guard of the set, and cuz they're soooo nice, they got a role together!
Given the age we're in, I'd love to see a sequel to this years later and how he adjusted to a normal life after living a fake one for so many years.
he'd need theorpy pfr sure. with constantly thinking, just maybe he never left the show...that ther camera soemwehre out there watching him.. can this bank teller really be trusty? etc
A good analogy for how a lot of people would rather use their time, and attention on another individuals life, instead of their own.

Because of this movie I went through a period in my teenage years where I thought I was in my own version of this show 🤣 I remember watching cars in Tesco car park to see if they looped. I also used to run spontaneously into the women's section in clothing shops and be like "AHA, GOT YOU" and I thought the fact the shop workers looked at me strangely was my proof, didn't occur to me they were looking at me strangely because a young boy just came bursting into the lingerie section 🤣
"In case I don't see ya, good afternoon, goodevening and goodnight" - this phrase is what GD usually says at the end of his solo concert. He also stated in his youtube documentary that his MOTTE World Tour Concert will be base in his fave show, The Truman Show.
when i think of a word to describe this movie, ahead of its time comes to mind. even if it is made now, or some year later, for me, it will always be ahead of its time.

Imagine if Truman had bought an optical telescope to look at the stars. He would have seen the truth long ago.
Oh I doubt they would have let him do that. Probably would have made sure that no shop in town sells them.
That scene is so well done
It is something about this movie, i keep coming back to it all the time, i don't know why.
What I really really appreciate about this movie is the cinematography. So, I went in this movie blind and didnt know about the plot at all and at the beginning the cinematography felt janky and I felt irritated, as the movie went on and the plot unfolded and cinematography got better, I freakin loved it.
