Prices have been artificially bloated for at least the last 3 years, so the prices I'd say are being adjusted back to their realistic value. Consider this, I bought a mint, fully loaded 6 year old Lexus RX in 2011 for 8 grand. You'll struggle to get a decent 2011 model for under 11 grand. That's a 13 year old car nearly. Even factoring in inflation, which really isn't that much over 10 years the second hand market is ridiculously overpriced.

Definitely, I bought an 8 year old toyota avensis 45k miles petrol in 2018 for 6k, if prices had kept with inflation the equivalent would now be 8k ish, but now an 8 year old yoyota avensis with same specs is 12k!
Crazy hikes, I understand the odd in demand model but its accross the board. Unsustainable

@@jamesgreen807 It is normal if a little reduced supply to the second user market. Bolstered heavily by repos early surrenders & none renewals of leases! The finance department every new car dealers the country was the most profitable! Now it was expected to be even more with interest rates & EV car price rising! But the market has stagnated. So price fall and still stock does not shift. Which reduces the funds available for new stock purchases even though the prices are a steal!

If a buyer can afford to run one of these troublesome beasts, they can afford to buy a more recent plate off a main dealer. It's hard to see any economic rationale for getting a high-mileage example that's going to spend most of its life with the mechanic. As you say, it's not the cost price that's the issue - it's the ongoing outlays.

Prestige dealers have been enjoying fleecing us for a couple of years, wanting top money for their stock but insult you with the part ex offer with 5 or 6 grand plus mark up. Now they’re stuck with stock they can’t shift. I work in the trade and the only stuff that’s a safe bet are cars well under ten grand. Gonna be some bargains out there for the brave!

Re: the premium vehicles, I can't help but think that the ridiculous rise in insurance premiums on these vehicles is hitting hard now!
Range Rovers have bombed in value, especially when you read about 1 in 4 being stolen via keyless defeat thieves, and the pitiful response to this problem by JLR.
Personally, if I were to buy one, I'd want the keyless entry system removed in favour of the older 'press to unlock' key fob type system.
When you see the security systems applied to your mobile phones, the car manufacturers are years behind, and yet your car is likely to be the second biggest investment after your house!

Higher interest rates are helping those of us with savings but also mean tying money up in a depreciating asset is a lot less tempting. Add to that the increased costs for anyone buying on credit and rapidly rising insurance costs and there's a perfect storm. There will be a floor where people start buying again somewhere but it is probably lower than we imagine (just like market tops always go higher than we think possible).

My brother has a 12 plate Jag XF with the 3 litre V6 diesel which has done 135K and has had one fault, the air vents stopped revolving. E-class Mercedes can suffer from corroded brake lines which you can't see. You're right about the 1.2 Peugeot engines though. I've just retired from the Police and some bright spark bought loads of 308s with that engine. What a disaster. Went from weekly checks to twice daily as the oil level could drop from "Full" to "Fill" in half a shift, and that wasn't just Response vehicles. We had one with about 35K on the clock that blew a head gasket.

I thought maybe in the old days perhaps wrongly that buyers might be able to sit in the cars , start the engine and see for themselves etc, otherwise you are simply buying blind. The auction company will not cover you for that risk.

I've reached that point. Either something so cheap that anything more than a few hundred to keep it on the road means scrapping it, or something brand new on a lease with all the costs covered for the term. The last thing I'd want to do right now is spend 12-15k on something 4 or 5 years old, that could sh*t it's engine and gearbox out all over the road at any time and cost thousands to fix, only to then have something else expensive go bang on it 6 months later.
Last couple of cars I've had before my current one were 12 month old, PCP type deals with an extended warranty to cover the final year of the finance... plus gap insurance! People talk about mad depreciation now, I had a 17 plate Volvo V90 D4 back in 2018 that was on sale new for £47k, mine was 11 months old, 9k on the clock and I got it for £24k. That's some serious depreciation, and all before diesels were vilified in the press.

There are levels of enthusiasm and enthusiasts.
People don't have the first few levels of ownership of a 2nd hand car that's well kept well washed and polished too making sure rust etc doesn't appear.
This discipline and involvement people don't seem to have anymore with their cars.
      This relationship I suppose.
Us maxxers had that enthusiasm for our fully purchased bangers or clean second hand motors regardless of wealth.
All that section has gone completely.
Now if you wanna do that you have to do a Mansoori job so they gentrified the maxing scene off to them German tuning companies and Louis Vittoned it.
So only rich people can have fun now with the modding.
Now we just have customers buying cars based on the lease deal and not having any motoring knowledge or enthusiasm or hobby style maintenance, discipline or cleaning experience. But they have stable jobs to pay for the monthly installments for lease spec cars which becomes like a compliance model for the leases in a funny sort of way as well. This is killing the market and none of the models seems to be around for long term for various other reasons which people have mentioned many times with quality etc. Made for the leases then chuck em away. That's bad like a mobile phone.
Now they are saying in the EU they want phones to be easy to repair for sustainability.
But with cars we have seen the opposite.
With complicated servicing, expensive fragile electronics and parts in general etc.
So the cars have become more throw away than the phones now.
Thinking my non smartphone phones all still work and my smartphones all stopped working.
Makes me think is there a genuine appetite and plan out there for making true sustainable products?
My is200 sport is still better quality than 90 percent of cars ever made.
It still works while other people I know have had 3 4 cars in that time.

Zoes have always had proportionally higher protection margins built into their battery packs than many other manufacturers as well, to keep them even further from undercharge and overcharge conditions. It's pretty much impossible for the owner to abuse the batteries in these - they'll easily outlive the rest of the car with largely imperceptible degradation. Unfortunately, the myths by the Daily Mail still do the rounds though.
