Virpil Split Z axis

  • I was gnashing teeth trying to figure out how to map separate wheel-brake channels in DCS, as certain modules require a separate axis for the left and right toe brakes.
I don't use a rudder-pedal system with toe brakes, so I was looking to use the Z-axis twist-grip feature on my Constellation Alpha. Twist left for the left toe-brake, and twist right for the right toe-brake.
Unfortunately, and confoundingly, DCS refuses to recognize an axis with a center for the two directions.
One solution is to map an "axis to button" function, which the Virpil software allows. However, I wanted a bit better fidelity provided by an analog axis for the brake function.
Here's what Virpil recommended to me:
    1) Make a copy of the Z-axis
    2) Double-click the first axis to customize it.
2a) Change "Type" from "Center" to "No Center"
2b) Cut the "Center" value, and paste it over the "Max" value.
    2c) Save
    3) Double-click the second axis to customize it.
3a) Re-name the axis to a different value from the drop-down (I used "rZ").
    3b) De-select "Inversion".
3c) Change "Type" from "Center" to "No Center"
3d) Cut "Center value and past it over the "Min" value.
    3e) Save.
    4) Save to device.
Basta. You should now have two separate twist axis; one from left to center, and a second from center to right.
I use the center pull-toggle for both brakes together. Works well.

This is awesome, but I cannot get it to work on newer software. Any ideas?
Edit: I got it to work. It does not show new axis "rZ" values until you save it. Thank you!

Ya, you have to flash the firmware to see the result.

You need to calibrate axis z and rz after.

@@Eisotopish yeah, i somehow mashed everything together in countless try and errors and by accident came across the recalibration and i got it semi working in the meantime 😆 I can't get it to work so both axis start at 0%.
One starts at 0, the other at 100%. I just inverted the input ingame of the one axis and I had my first smooth takeoff AND landing with the BF 109 in DCS, ever. Now i never will touch it again, it is fine for me 😆😆😆
