As you kinda said, they literally can’t step up to him when he’s out at mid-range because he will then just drive around them.
So they are in a tough spot.
Percentage-wise they have to take their chances on the lesser of two evils: his jumper.
The only other option is to double or triple him which, as you said, opens them up to his passing which was also elite level.
All the bs about him playing in a weak era is basically due to ignorant mf’ers not understanding WHY teams don’t seem to aggressively defend him.
It’s not cos they were weak defenders, it was because he was so good at all fundamentals all they could do was choose the lowest percentage scoring option to let him have.
It was a tactical choice he forced them to make, not a lack of capability on their part.
The only team to successfully shut him down for a couple seasons was Detroit and they only succeeded because they adopted a set of rules that basically amounted to ding what would be a flagrant two in today’s game EVERYTIME HE LEFT HIS FEET AT THE RING.
And in the end all they achieved was to force him to go to the gym and get physically stronger and do develop the mid-range shooting skills that ultimately made him undefeatable.

I watched highlights from last season and it just looks like 5 people standing around having separate groups of conversations, occasionally running out to swat at a 3. I think the era/rules is a moot point... if you swapped MJ and Bron with a time machine both would definitely still have been dominant players. Bron in the 80s/90s would have been like a cross between Magic and malone, and Jordan in the modern game would be a hybrid of Westbrook and Kawhi. i still think mike is the best ive ever seen, but lebron is a solid #2.
The biggest difference is in mentality - jordan was a killer who played every game like his life was on the line; whereas bron is a businessman who maximizes every angle to maintain his spot at the top. If my life was on the line, give me jordan in a 1v1 or a playoff series with even teams, but both players would have been great in any era and are in the pantheon with wilt and russell, bird and magic, durant and whoever else you want to throw in (my dad always said Oscar was the best he ever saw)

Im not saying he wouldve been a scrub but the 80s - 90s players were different. They were mean, more physical, and couldnt just demand a trade or get the coach fired. Where as Jordan would win every year in this era. Thered be no way to stop him. And if he worked on his 3 (like we all know he would) I can honestly see him hitting 8 or 9 a night. He could average 40/10/10 easily. Especially with the rules changes. Could u see lebron facing the bad boy pistons? What if they used "the Jordan Rule" on lebron? And that was young lion Jordan, who preferred to attack basket and put bigs on posters. So perimeter defenders played him to drive so they gave him a little space and didn't have hands up. Jordan is known for his flashy highlights, but I also saw several games of him where I thought he didn’t do much the whole game just to find out he scored 40+. He could perfectly operate in the system defeat a team silently. For him it was always about winning. If he needed the opponents fans to shut up, he’d dunk on their stars, keep their score low with defense - whatever it took. While MJ understood a high flying dunk is good for his brand and shoe sales, this never compromised his commitment to the game. With Kobe and LeBron you can see how building their legacy and getting the stats seemed to compromise their behavior on the court. A Kobe would go for 81 for the headlines, it wasn’t needed for winning that game and he did it at horrible efficiency, similar how a Russe Westbrook forced his team to get him triple doubles. A LeBron won’t go for a block to not end up on a poster, manages his energy on defence, flop, calls himself the goat - to me this is all a heavy emphasis on your social media reputation and statistical legacy rather than a focus on winning no matter what - to witness this raw passion and commitment to winning was the actually inspiring facet of MJs career.

Though the “story” and journey may be storybook, but to be honest, I wouldn’t re-watch it. It wasn’t that fun to watch.

    Enjoy your vids, bud!
You've hit on a subject near & dear to my heart as a lifelong Chicagoan who, as rough as it is to admit to myself, is hitting 50y/o this year & grew up watching MJs career. (Recommended reaction video- swap over to football and watch Walter Payton highlights- he wasn't just Bears running back, but he was also their emergency QB- and did take some snaps- but he was often listed as their emergency kicker and was known to kick 40+ yd FGs in practice... not only fast and smooth (his nickname was "Sweetness," after all,) but he'd look to take out opposing linebackers as he ran. You'll have a blast watching him!)
MJ *IS* the GOAT, especially with those of us lucky enough to have seen him play, (as well as Kobe & LBJ,) and for those of us falling into that group, it's rarely debatable.
MJ was and remains the best at just *imposing his will* on a game at any given moment, day in, day out.
Whatever you needed in a specific pivotal moment, he did.
Need a huge 3pter? He hit it.
Need to put pressure on a team? He'd get the And1 on an opposing superstar to make sure they started softening up on D and not hit the showers.
Needed the ball in the hands of one of the sharpshooters? Done.
His D was amazing. Need a bigtime steal? He snatched it.
Need an opposing crowd out of the game? He'd drain the next 5 shots.
He could start a game 2-11 shooting, then come out and dominate by putting up 20 of the next 24pts to wipe out the opponent's lead.
And he did it all, seemingly almost every night and at will.
He seemed to have his body attuned to whatever the arc & distance to the basket was during every second he was in motion to a degree that seemed supernatural... but, it was more like... his will was just as trained as his body, combined with the ability to somehow defy gravity.
I've watched my share of "the next Jordans" come and go, and there's been some great players- certainly Mamba & LBJ, but none have compared to the package MJ brought, especially in their ability to simply impose their will on the outcome of a game like him.
    Absolutely THE GOAT.

    • @giveadont

@@secoTheSonicFan 1988-1993 was pretty much his athletic prime where he had the skill to compliment it. 1996-1998 was where he really reached ungodly levels in terms of his Basketball IQ and controlling momentum. Although, he was still athletic as hell through even the later years relative to most players. His upper body also got stronger and while he didn't have as much lift he could still sling jumpshot fadeaways from like 15-18 feet (just watch his 1997 playoff highlights - it's nearly 10 minutes of jumpers and fadeaways on anyone and everyone).
1993 was weird, however. He had just competed in the 1992 Olympics and often talked about how mentally and physically drained he was in 93. Supposedly he had also been considering retirement during the season. I'm sure all that had a good deal to do with his waning enthusiasm as well as his athleticism.
He still averaged 41ppg in the finals, though. And beat Dominique, the Cavs and the Knicks and the MVP Barkley. So it's not like he didn't have an insane playoff run. He looked like he was finally reaching his peak IQ by 92 through 93, though. More surgical and calculated. In 91 he was great but if you watch those games against the Lakers he was still making a lot of mistakes. By 92 he was just winning games with his momentum. Teams would be beat in the first half (Like the Blazers game 1 in 92). And he only became more cunning and surgical from then on.
Keep in mind, too, even though his numbers weren't as mind boggling compared to years prior, in the 1996-97 playoffs he almost became the first guard to ever lead his team in pts, rebs, assts, blks, and stls in a playoff championship run.
At age 34 he was only a few rebounds short of outrebounding Rodman (who was really inconsistent in those playoffs, only averaging like 8.5 with 3 Offensive rebounds. Jordan averaged 7.9 with like 2 ORB) and only like a couple blocks short of leading in that, too (Pippen barely beat him with totals but they both averaged 0.9 as the highest).
The only player to do that (Lead in those 5 categories) and win a championship was Hakeem in 93-94 as far as I can find.
