Honestly, the cube was a movie that didn’t need a sequel
i fell like they could have made a sequel, but this is shit
Doing a direct sequel is too obvious. There are horror movies that have similar emotional journeys, involve people being trapped in an single environment (with a central intrigue) or have similarly bleak tones. 'Saw' felt similar to Cube. An acquaintance of mine who hated Cube (and hasn't forgiven me for recommending it to him) made tonal comparisons to a 2008 finnish film called Sauna (which he has forgiven me for recommending to him).
The problem with a Cube sequel or prequel is that they would have to subvert expectations in a radical enough way to depart from the original and avoid the temptation of providing cheap answers to questions left unanswered by the original. A cube sequel would kind of have to be the anti-cube to thwart expectations.
Victor Cates i do agree with you, but i do think that if they made a sequel, they could have done better
Which is why it doesn't. In my mind. Cube 2 was just a parody of that movie
That would make much more sense for them to make such a shitty movie

To makes things worse, they forcefully confirm that Kazan is one of the creators / monitors of the cube / torture in Cube Zero and was handicapped as punishment for helping people escape. Which is in and of itself horrible because brain damage and disability are not just super conveniently interchangeable things.
the implication of Cube Zero was that Wynn was Kazan, but there was no confirmation except his desire to go back to a differently colored room
@@quinnmarchese6313 the creators of cube zero said that they aren't the same character but that kazan did have the same fate. Which in my mind, is bullshit. Also cube 2 and 3 were made by completely different people so I don't count them as being Canon.
What sucks is that even if Kazan tells people about what happened, nobody would believe him because of his disability.

Fucking brilliant.
And logically it makes sense too! If you're gonna dump someone in a moving labyrinth, why go to the trouble of depositing them in the middle when there's so little effort in just leaving them by the "entrance."

"So Worth disappoints himself, before the world can do it for him." I don't know why, but I love that line. Also, amazing work all around for this video to be honest.
i noticed that pyro skipped over leavens death, which confused me because her death was shocking.
Quentin opened up to leaven when he “kidnapped” her, which made us think that he trusted leaven and didnt want to do any harm to her.
obviously that changed as he gets more and more aggressive as each scene goes on, but when he stabs leaven and kills her, it just goes to prove that no matter who you make amends with, they can always *stab you in the back.*
I was confused when he says she is a blank slate. She shows over times that she has a great dislike to... people below her, like, sorry, Kazan (she grumbled when Kazan has to pee, when he blocked her way when she was counting the cube's dimension with steps, and when she was agreeing with Quentin to leave Kazan), and became pretty arrogant when she became the key for identifying the traps. "Brain over beauty" like she said.
However, when they were stuck with that power prime and prime problem, she felt powerless, then was shocked by Kazan's ability on that one. She can be on his side now from times to times, perhaps for the way to keep him alive and for her to survive, but at the end, when she bonded with Worht about the outside world is filled with boundless human stupidity, she is the one who couraged him by saying, "I can live with that.", showing that she can and will consider the people below her, like, I'm sorry, Kazan.
On the other hand, she became more hostile and stood up at the person she relied since the start: Quentin. "Stay away from me." and all those, especially shown after Holloway is gone. She's the only woman, a girl at that, among the group now, especially with Holloway's suspicion of Quentin's fondness of young girl before.
I'm not fond of arrogant characters, doesn't matter even if they've gone through development, so she's not my favorite, but I got to say how they handled her character is pretty brilliant too. All of them are, until the sequel.

government of canada you are doing fine 👍
Y'know, the scene in 2 where they stumble across their own bodies, dead of dehydration, could've been better if they weren't all in unique clothes. Stumbling across their own bodies, with the only indicator of who's who being the name printed on their jackets; otherwise an empty husk.
"the only thing scarier than a big, unbeatable government or corporation watching over you is no one at all" is such a fantastic line, but it also made me think; is this the logic behind religious people? because although I am very secular myself I understand the comfort of feeling like everything has a purpose, that there is something above us that finely tuned everything, and the concept that there is nothing watching us is terrifying. maybe that's another parallel you could draw to this movie.
@@mattmurphy7030 that's a really really good take and I really agree. us humans try to find meaning in our universe and our existence because we need to. to think that humans are completely accidental and have no intrinsic or bigger meaning is inherently uncomfortable and most people just can't accept that. religion is the most common coping mechanism, because it's comforting to imagine a creator who gives us a purpose and beauty, but the reality is is that there is no empirical evidence to prove this and there is no obvious purpose. not that the pursuit of that purpose is necessarily pointless since it's just to bring us comfort, but life just is, with all its cruelty and bliss, it just is.
and yeah, we are left with is relationships, and there will always be people who will consider others a threat and stop us from uniting together, and frankly we can't do anything to eliminate that thinking. we can never unite as human beings, and that's just our nature.
yeah I really appreciate your take and I think this movie does a really apt job of portraying this specific perspective.
I'm a little sleep deprived right now so forgive me for referencing the sequel, but if I remember correctly the prequel third film actually "reveals" what happens when someone escapes the cube. (I don't want to regard any other film as canon save for the first one but bear with me) and what happens is that after they enter the white room someone asks them if they believe in God or not.
Here's my personal take though. The cube is definitely a reference to nihilism and different responses to that seemingly insurmountable problem, death. Some people just accept the absurdity of it and have already given into the whimsy of the entity, others fight and kill each other for a brief escape in a power fantasy, one may just be trying to make it and then you have people like Kazan who seems to have everything already figured out yet isn't capable of properly communicating how he got to his conclusions with the group.
The dim, confusing rooms throwing people from one place to the next with no guidance. The silence of a seemingly unmonitored box totaling somewhere around seventeen thousand rooms only broken by these rooms shifting and confusing the layout further. The unknowns as to if you're the only people within the cube. The fear of finding someone who had preceded you. The fear of death by dehydration and starvation, outside of the traps.
It's a machine, like any other. Yet it leaves so many questions unanswered; Why was it built? Who built it? Where are they? Why us? Do they want us to live through this? What are they going to do to us if we get out? Are they even here? If we get out, where will we be? How do I know what kind of sensors the other room is using? I can't do math, what do all these funny numbers mean? And so on, and so on.
It feels analogous to life to me in these ways, an unguided experience save for the people that surround you giving you advice they've figured out already. A scary march forward with no real ending to be seen than to just be another casualty of the cube itself. Questions upon questions about what your purpose is, and how you can survive. Wondering if the intentions of those around you is pure or not. Is there a higher plan to this machine? Or are we merely just victims of circumstance here.
I really didn't like the twist ending that Cube had though, I genuinely think that Leaven, Worth and Kazan all could have made it. Quentin was so far beneath them and had to navigate so many potentially trapped rooms without boots, bait or Kazan it's so inplausible that it's going to persistently bother me forever because no book nor film can recreate this genie in a bottle that was Cube (1997).
I don't think I'm going to re-experience discovering this movie for the first time, but I can remember what it was like. This pure fear of the unknown, terrible titan of a slaughterhouse. Because I can imagine what it'd be like to wake up there, and I believe that everyone who has seen the movie has had that thought of combating pure, unfettered nihilism.
Also sidenote that Worth shows up in Stargate and has a similar character to this movie, most notably his character arc from nihilist to hopeful and joyous. Though he's definitely more neurotic there.
Edit: I just realized I didn't even touch on the theology side of things, dammit
@@slightlyoffensivedadjokes I am a religious person, so my take is naturally biased. But I really wouldn't go so far as to "lmao religion no exist hrrbrdrr look at them all they do is cope" even if I didnt, because that's just one way to shit on many people's beliefs. You may have not put it that way, but it certainly comes off as offensive.
My purpose for believing in my religion, is because my prayers have always come true. I'm not shitting here, they always have, even in my darkest times. Let me admit here, I was far from a religious person, if anything I was an agnost. Believing that a God existed but not really caring about following His rules or worshipping Him at all. I wasnt faithful in the slightest nor did I care about the concept of religion as a whole. If someone convinced me perhaps I would've become an atheist entirely.
And then my life just...changed. Now, I have no reason to disbelieve in it. And the case is true for many people.
Its not just smth we blindly use to cope with the fear of there being nothing, because in modern day many people are athiests who legitimately believe there is nothing after death and no God that will hold them accountable, and they seem to be living with that just fine. If they can then so can we. And many of us do.
But then why do we believe? Because we found things that helped us believe. Historical and religious landmarks, real life events coinciding with information in holy books, wishes getting fulfilled, prayers being answered etc etc, our reasons for belief is different on a case by case basis. But we have found our proof, and that is why we believe. We do not "cope".
I hate this "there is no proof" argument. "Its smth we cant see ergo it doesnt exist". Seeing is not always believing. Many years ago, the existence of bacteria wasnt even acknowledged since it was smth we couldnt see. But later on we found a way to discover it. How are we so sure the same cant happen here?
How can anyone say science is the definitive proof, when science is openly admitted to be ever changing? Just cause people cannot find proof of God now, doesn't mean it will never find it.
I wont force my ideology of "God is real and religion is the absolute truth" on you or anyone with this message, because that is not my point here and I could care less about anyone else's religious beliefs. Its these subtle jabs at the concept of religion i see everywhere that get me talking.
Again, my take is incredibly biased, I admit, and I also acknowledge your point did not revolve so much around religion as it did around purpose and unity. But those few lines set me off, so here's my incredibly long tangent.
@@mcbedo6568Wait bro, nothing has any inherent meaning, that's all. You can crrate your own. But if you claim something exists, it'll only be a claim unless you also have some sort of convcing proof/evidence. Otherwise, theoretically anythying could be anything, but evidence and proof are needed if people value truth and fact, trying to understand reality as accurately as possible, to describe and understand reality. We needed confirmable, observable, testable proof of bacteria in order for the claim that bacteria exists to have any credit at all. If you said you believe in god, and people point out that there's no scientific/material proof of the existence of god, they're simply pointing out a fact, you can still have your personal beliefs and bias, but if god existed I'd only want to believe in it because it was the most evident and logical conclusion, aside from EVERY other possibility, free from contradictions, fallacies and my personal feelings.

RelentlessNebula 813
One thing I like about the cube is that the characters really act reasonable. Like, when they point out there's three numbers, I immediately thought of coordinates. And the characters did, too! When they found the side wall, but were up high, the realized they needed to get down. I know it's a small thing, but it's so annoying that some movies build "tension" because the characters don't get out or stand still for absolutely no reason but that the plot wouldn't work otherwise.
Also, there are far fewer cubes of a single prime than primes below 100, so it makes actual sense that they got lucky for so long.
Nerd Explains explained it pretty well, but when they found out a certain set of numbers, they should've waited for the cubes to move and they would be at the bridge room to the exit. But obviously that wouldn't be fun in a movie, because plot

The Cube is brilliant because it's like a metaphor for life we are all in a cube going from cube to cube to cube trying to find our way out only to realize we will all end up in the same place we started from. From life to death and from death to life.

I would say yes, but i gotta see the whole review again to see if theirs anything wrong with this :/
@@zeoky5068 well the older woman (can't remember her name) might have died, cuz no one be able to grab her if she went out of the cube, but the other 3 defo could have lived.

Pyro: if someone narrated the opening scene, the whole aesthetic would be ruined
Also Pyro: ‘a man wakes up in a room unfamiliar to him, dazed and confused...’
Noice
I know you’re joking, but having an analysis video narrated is far different than watching the actual films themselves. He’s describing the aesthetic to us, as opposed to trying to have us experience it. That would require watching the films themselves (which, at least for the first one, is highly suggested).
@@christopherlowery3797 yeah pretty much. This video essay have a very different purpose than the movie.

Pyro, you're actually smart. Stop wasting your time on commentary. Your analyse of art is so much better. I love your reviews. Make more.
I feel likes he's doing a p good job with balancing both, just need that petscop 2
Honestly I just like when he shows his face. Makes it feel more... Real?? I don't know how to describe it
no we need more commentary on youtube
He can do both
What’s the difference between analysis and commentary ?
34:47 It's heavily implied from the scene with the other Jerry as well as all the watches that Simon survived by killing and eating every Jerry he came across. The idea in the movie was probably that there was enough liquids in the people he consumed to sustain him.
cube one's plot: people in a spooky box but the plot is actually better than you think.
cube two's plot: people in a spooky box but the plot is actually worse than you think.

Why do I have this distinct memory of seeing a few scenes of Kazan as a genius who was working for the people who made the cube until he realized what the cube was all about and he tried to release information about the whole operation but then he was captured and tied to a chair where they electrocuted his brain to becoming how he was in the film.
Was that a memory or a dream?!
Your thinking about cube 3, where it’s a prequel and it has just as you described, but it’s not Kazan and instead of being put into a electric chair, they do something to the guy, with his mind and he end up just like Kazan, it revealing that Kazan was someone who worked with the cube people then got his mind scrambled, before the first film starts.
@@spidermations6495 Thank you so much!
I thought I was imagining things, because he never mentioned cube 3 and its been years since I saw any of the cube movies.
@@sumoslamer180 do you think he should review the third one?
It looks way better than the 2nd and has more interesting characters, but it basically gives away all the mystery from cube 1.
@@spidermations6495 I think it'd be interesting to know how he sees the 3rd movie being a movie about breaking a bit of the mystery by properly closing the book on these movies as a series.
I think too many movies today are afraid of relieving the audience of mystery and tend to make open ended movies to allow for never ending train of sequels with degrading quality.
Having an open ended finale is fine, but only if it truly IS the finale.

Jerry’s first “death” looked like something out of a Nostalgia Critic video.
That's just what I was thinking.
Except worse somehow
It was from a nostalgia critic video, the producers for the movie hit him up and he gave them the video, to which they made a whole movie around that one scene.

I watched cube as part of my final exam at my 3d school - I enjoyed it so much, that I also changed a bit of my concept to have more of this exit room type of gameplay in my build. Love that movie.
The CGI in cube 2 looks like a 3rd grader trying blender for the first time.
Probably wrote the script, too.
maybe a newborn
Atleast the 3rd grader didn’t it better than this
On a Windows Vista
Nah, I think it is grown ass adults making this. But also I think it would go better if a 3rd grader did do it.
Did you guys know that the set contained just one cube, changed to different colours by means of gel panels. Since it was a time-consuming process to change from one to another, the film was not shot in sequence, rather colour-by-colour. The red gels were the first to be installed, meaning all scenes in red rooms were shot first. As it happens, red rooms contain the most dialog-heavy scenes in the film, including Worth's big "there is no conspiracy" speech to Holloway. The film had a modest budget and a tight schedule, and David Hewlett recalled being very apprehensive at shooting scenes that contained pages of pure dialog on his part very early in the shoot. He also felt that Worth's line "Well I feel better" after his rant to Holloway rang immensely true on a personal level, as the remainder of the shoot was much less dependent on his memorisation.
Modest budget? They only had 350k. That’s practically nothing for movies.
@@basedpump946 I think modest means smaller
@@glitched8975 modest means a smaller budget.
I expected as much. Seems like they just made a/some extra panel/s for when they opened any hatches / when showing an opening to another room recorded from the outside to the inside. which is pretty genius and money efficient.

Pyro’s movie reviews are honestly one of the best parts of his channel. He dives into the movie and is amazing at explaining why things work and why they don’t. He tells exactly what he thinks and is genuine in what he says, and it sounds like he enjoys making these videos even if he thinks the movie is horrible because he can get a laugh anyways.
