- A playthrough of Sunsoft's 1994 beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, The Death and Return of Superman.
Superman gets a really bum deal in videogames. His NES game wasn't anything to write home about, and the less that is said about his N64 and Game Boy adventures, the better off everyone is.
There are quite a few people that claim The Death and Return of Superman is one of the best games to feature the man of steel, and unfortunately, it probably is. I prefer the original Genesis Superman game by far, and Justice League Task Force is great (at least on the SNES), but he's only one of several featured characters there. So, yeah. "One of the best." That leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Things start out on a pretty promising note. It plays quite a bit like Final Fight and Streets of Rage, and has an enemy in the first stage named "Rambeau." I lol'ed at that one. You can fly above the enemies, use specials, grapples, fireballs, and sometimes the game even turns into a side-scrolling shoot 'em up. But when you get a bit further the game decides to not play nice anymore with you, and it starts loading the screen with groups of enemies that are infuriatingly cheap to deal with. When the flying guy with a gun, the soldier with a gun, and the soldier with a grappling hook all show up at the same time, you might as well just cry "Uncle!" then and there. Unless you constantly throw or jump attack, you will get utterly destroyed since any of these guys can knock you down by swatting straight through your standard punch combo. I understand the need to increase the challenge over the course of a game, but generally it's better done by changing up enemy attack patterns, movements, and introducing new enemies. Here, you get the swarm of the half-dozen bad guys, palette swapped again and again, doing little but alternating stun and knock down attacks endlessly. It's infuriating, tedious, and not fun at all. So my advice? If you want to play it, have fun with the first few levels and then turn it off.
It does look and sound nice, and the different characters are cool to play as, but at the end of the day, I wouldn't bother. I wish I hadn't.

I enjoyed this game. Great music, decent graphics, and neat storyline. Only real complaint is the repetition of enemies used. Some levels only feature one or two types at most, disguised as palette swaps.
Wow! This is pretty much a faithful adaptation to the 1992-93 comic book series. :)
These modern devs need to take notes all these technological advances and zero imagination

You know I have one of the comic books of Green Lantern where Hal Jordan was accused of killing all the Green Lanterns. On top of that he was attacked by the other DC Heroes.

I remember a guy doing the review for this and he said the music was crap lol, he have no idea wtf he was talking about. The music in this game was incredible for each character you took control of, not a single song sucked.
The music on the Genesis/MegaDrive version is superior, sorry.
@@kramalerav 🤣😂🤣 No the hell it wasn't, the music in the genesis version sounded awful as hell. And some of the songs were on repeat like they were replaying the same track over and over. Sega Genesis did have some songs that were better than the SNES but not this game. Double Dragons and Battletoads was better music wise on the Genesis than the SNES. Maximum Carnage had better music on the genesis than the SNES version.
I like how Eradicator grapple attack is the Bane Backbreaker.
Wasn't what happened to Christopher Reeve tragic enough? Why do the Superman games continue to subject the poor superhero to such abuse? Hadn't he already suffered enough?

Actually, the 1988 Superman arcade game by Taito was pretty good.
They should start with the masculine 1938 Superman (or at least John Byrne's version of Superman) cause this wuss ass post-1954 one is garbage

Taito at least produced a pretty good arcade Superman game, but Batman almost always had better luck.

I really liked this game as a kid. It was very repetitive, but the graphics were good and the music was really good, it told a good story too.

I'm still LOL to Eradicator (My fav Superman) cape to this day. It's like he's wearing 80s Shoulder Pad 😅 and it's make his cape look like bait that matador using in spanish bullfight.

This fucking game. I think I made it to Level 7 or 8 and I could just not get past it. And it's not even that the bosses are that hard, it's just the level enemies that gang up on you with cheap sucker punches and guns. I'm going to beat this one day, though, dammit! I'm new to your channel, and I can't get enough man! Keep it up! By the way, have you considered doing The Tick? I remember that being hard as nails too
Uhh...this is...kind of a masterpiece of a game.
When you stop and think about it. Imagine a 4-6 player version of this very game. You basically end up with a way more playable and thusly, IMHO, fully realized rendition of the Konami 90's arcade X-MEN game.
It's very rough around the edges, but you can tell this wasn't some cheap cash-in. The guys who made this game put in some work. Not surprisingly, as it was at least partially Blizzard.

We need this game remastered and with DLC the other supermen can have their own storylines as well I beat this game but on an old TV where if you did a super move or if the game does a lot of flashes it would glitch then go back to normal what a crazy way to beat a game that has to be some kind of record they should give us the other supermen as DLC fighters in the next injustice game and give us chapters as well evil Superman going up agenst other versions of himself would be a cool DLC for the story
It is a pretty good game, my only complain is that you can't attack multiple enemies at the same time like you can on other beat em up, instead you can only attack them one at a time, so that is very problematic and makes this game tough

Supes must be holding back big time, he's just punching away on those thugs and they're just taking it like a champ. I'd think on punch would do it. He also is apparently very weak against moltov cocktails, goes down after one!

What always bugged me about this game was superman's chest symbol was the number 8 and not an S. We were playing as 8 man.

The Superman arcade game is still probably the best one, especially 2 player as you get to play as a funky red colored Supes. That and the sweet tinny version of the movie theme. This game was a rental for me back then, but man, it was SO friggin' repetitive. I'd say if it was half as long as it is, it would have been a much better game. As is, I just got sick of it and never finished it. I did appreciate it having some obscure DC characters, though, like Rambeau and Clawster.

You know, I'm pretty shocked that Blizzard getting to make a decent Superman game so early in their existence never was trusted with the franchise again, or really any comic hero tie-in.
Not that I'd trust 2020's Blizzard with it, granted, but *any* time for those two and a half decades, nothing after this?

This is a tough game. But it's a pretty good game. What I find interesting is that so many haters say, "Superman is overpowered. He can just do anything. It's an easy win. The game would be over in 2 seconds." However, this game debunks those hater claims because Superman struggles to win in this entire game. The level of difficulty is high. If Superman was overpowered (as the haters claim), then playing as Superman should be an easy win. But in fact, there is no easy winning in this game.
Still wasn't as hard as Maximum Carnage was. You had to refight the same bosses over and over, and if Carnage smacked you even once or twice you died.

If someone get's bitten by a rattle snake, would you suddenly say, "Still isn't as bad as being shocked by an electric eel..."?
That's exactly why they made this game difficult, because lack of challenge isn't usually fun.

This is basically batman returns just with superman but hey at least it's better than superman returns the game and the infamous dreadful superman 64

The music was so much better in the Mega Drive version if you play it on an actual console. Most videos of the MD version are emulated, and contain a really nasty sound glitch that makes it really hard to listen to.
