  • A playthrough of Nintendo's 1992 action-adventure game for the Super Nintendo, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
In this playthrough I get all of the optional items and heart pieces.
What is there to say about this SNES masterpiece that hasn't already been said many times before? It's one of the best games that Nintendo ever made, and one of the best titles in the SNES library. It marked a return to the style pioneered by the original NES game after Zelda II: The Adventure of Link's derivative platformer-style gameplay, and brought with it a boat load of improvements made possible by Nintendo's new 16-bit system. I got this for my tenth birthday (it had only been out for a few weeks, so I lucked out with timing!) and beat it over, and over, and over again. Of course, that was only after I'd spend countless hours exploring every single nook and cranny of the game world. Don't be fooled by the runtime of the video - I know the game like the back of my hand some two-and-a-half decades later. This is one meaty game that will take you dozens of hours to get through your first time if you aren't making use of a strategy guide. I wouldn't recommend a guide either - a big part of the magic of Zelda games comes from the sheer joy of exploring the world, experimenting with your inventory, and bombing every flat surface in sight. It somehow never gets old - this game, contained on a humble 1 megabyte ROM, provides a more engaging, memorable experience than many modern games that require Blu-Ray discs to hold their dozens of gigabytes of data. Sometimes less is more, and A Link to the Past is a very good example of that in the modern day.
Unsurprisingly, it was instantly hailed as a classic when it was first released in early 1992. The music compositions sounded fantastic (though to be honest, the general sound quality was well below that found in games like ActRaiser or Final Fantasy II, and this was quite apparent even when the game was new), the 256-color screens looked amazing thanks to the animation, the isometric perspective (that properly obscured Link when walking behind objects between him and the 'camera'), use of shadow, and little incidental animations (flickering torches, falling leaves, etc) brought the world to life, and the dungeons were far more complex than they had ever been in the NES version thanks to the beefed up hardware.
A Link to the Past has also seen a fair number related titles released, as well: it was ported to the Game Boy Advance and the Virtual Console service, and it received side-story games in the Japan-only Satellaview game Inishie no Sekiban, as well as the multiplayer Four Swords on the GBA. It saw a direct sequel made for the 3DS (A Link Between Worlds), and it was also a clear inspiration for the original Game Boy classic Link's Awakening. I was also a big fan of the comic that was originally run in Nintendo Power, and that later was compiled and released in a single volume.
It's hard to not gush about A Link to the Past. It has stood the test of time remarkably well, and it deserves the place it occupies at the top of so many "best games of all time" lists.
Side note: I do apologize for the few spots in the video without music. Nintendo took exception to the use of the Dark World overworld theme, so there are a few spots where it was muted by CZcams. It doesn't impact much of the video, but if you noticed it and was wondering why, that's the reason.

When I listen to "In The Garage" by WEEZER, this game comes to mind. Bk in HS days, my buddy built a lil enclosed space in the garage to use for our band practice. In one of the corners of that space sat a TV and snes set up with this game.

I try to play through as much as I can on my own, but if I get stuck, I appreciate walkthrough videos like this to help get me unstuck. We didn't have CZcams or the Internet back then, but I remember beating this game, so somehow I figured it out. Those were simpler times.

When I played this game, I had my character do the exploration to get the Ice Rod before going to The Eastern Palace and getting The Pendant of Courage and The Pegasus Boots. They come in handy when your character doesn't have a lot of Bombs at first and still do since one of Kakariko Village's locals can't believe my character caught him.
Then came The Book of Mudora and The Desert Palace for The Pendant of Wisdom.
After that, my character got the fins from Zola, got the Magic Boomerang and a bigger Shield from The Waterfall of Wishing, and spent a lot of Rupees at The Pond of Happiness before getting the Magic Mirror from The Old Man on Death Mountain who was looking for his granddaughter and going on to do more explorations before going to The Mountain Palace and The Pendant of Power.
The rest all fall into place, though the game devs needed to realize cute bunnies (Link's form before he finds The Moon Pearl) still have really sharp claws.
I wish I could find a jeweler who could make a customized gold Triforce Pendant with a gemstone in the center of each Triforce to represent Power, Wisdom, and Courage.
The Dark World's Golden Pyramid can't be opened with anything except the Super-Bomb and is where the Golden Sword (get the Tempered Sword from The Dwarven Blacksmiths' Cottage first) and the Silver Bow and Arrows can be obtained.

I was 6 in the summer of 1991 and fell in love with The Legend Of Zelda : A Link To The Past so much that this year , Last month to be exact , I brought The Legend Of Zelda : A Link To The Past For Gameboy Advance to play on my Gamecube's Gameboy player and I hated the GBA port when I first played it on release in 2002, but it's an awesome port and a welcome addition to any Nintendo collection.

Still one of the best games in the series, and it's amazing how much this game holds up to this day. Beating this game in one sitting after accidently deleting my save is one of my greatest gaming achievements in my opinion.

born in 1980 i cant believe that i never played zelda on the snes as a kid... the original nes game i played just as you described above. im just now playing it on the wii u and i am enjoying the game alot. the only critique that i have is links pink hair, what were they thinking? and maybe because of the length of time that has gone by im not totally satisfied with the animation, for some reason i feel like it went kind of overboard with the cartoony look and think that the snes provided the capabilities to have a more balanced animation that would look a bit more serious. im not sure if i explained that part in a way that is understanding of the point i was trying to make with the animation of the game? i also expected the controls to be better then they are, link moves just like the original from what i remember and im frustrated with the fact that link cant position his self better with being able to turn an face his enemies better then the first game... i also would prefer the shooting sword style especially since after one hit link loses that ability and really isnt that much of an advantage that they should have taken it away. i do appreciate the stealth aspect of the game play that they seemed to incorporate effortlessly as the combat is very similar to the original where the study of the enemies pattern is useful to avoid attacks, the addition of the of the enemies losing site of link adds a big change and funner experience with such a little tweak. the boomerang seems to move a lot slower then in the first game and travels a shorter distance ... i am getting use to it though and understand how much of a challenging game zelda was and still is so im pretty sure by the end i will have loved playing the game with out any hang ups to hold against it... im currently getting sucked into retro gaming to the point that i prefer it over any other consoles or next generation gaming.......

That's the video game sprites' malfunction. Link's hair is actually supposed to be blond.
The exceptions are the cartoon series "The Legend of Zelda" as part of "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" and the cartoon series "Captain N: The Game Master" when Link, Zelda, and even Ganon made guest appearances. In both cartoon series, Link's hair is brown.

16 bit games like Link to the Past are a perfect blend of graphics and sound. It hits the "sweet spot" of not being overly graphical, or too primitive as the 8 bit NES was. I never cared much for systems or games after the SNES era. I'm still impressed by the graphics and sound of THIS game more so than the newer games of today!

Same. Born in '82, I'm happy with my SNES Classic Mini - it's the only system I need! Yes, the 16bit-aera was the best, I'm not interrested in all the consoles who came after it!

I remember when the first 8 bit NES came out. Compared to the Atari, we all thought it was the pinnacle of technological evolution. When the SNES came out it was practically like watching tv.

I’m so thankful to this game and its developers. I still remember sitting there as a kid in front of this being amazed on how epic this was/is!
From when first switching it on not knowing what it was to that first scene! 👌💛✨
Getting lost for hours/days in this story.
I definitely needed this growing up and it was the first game that would shape my love of RPG games forever!
Thank you to all those people who use there imaginations in creating! 👌
